Nigerian military sights abducted schoolgirls in 3 Boko Haram camps - PT

Posted: 21 May 2014 01:20 PM PDT

Found this revealing exclusive report by Premium Times on their site. Read below...
Nigeria's Special Forces from the Army's 7th Division have sighted and narrowed the search for the more than 250 abducted Chibok schoolgirls to three camps operated by the extremist Boko Haram sect north of Kukawa at the western corridors of the Lake Chad, senior military and administration officials have said.
"It has been a most difficult but heroic breakthrough," one senior military official said in Abuja.
That claim was supported by another senior commander from the Army's 7th Division, the military formation created to deal with the insurgency in the Northeast. The 7th Division is headquartered in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The breakthrough comes at a critical moment for the Nigerian military that has faced cutting criticism over its handling of the kidnapping of the girls more than a month ago.

The news is also key for the Maiduguri-based 7th Division a week after a humiliating mutiny by troops of its 101 battalion who fired at the General Officer Commanding the division, Ahmadu Mohammed, a Major General.

Maj. Gen. Mohammed escaped unhurt, but has since been redeployed. The soldiers blamed him for the deaths of at least four of their colleagues killed near Chibok, a remote community in Borno State where the girls were taken captives April 14.

But military insiders said Mr. Mohammed was targeted for daring to arrest the growing indiscipline within his troop.

The abductions have sparked international outrage, with the United States, United Kingdom, France and Israel, providing intelligence and surveillance assistance.

Nigerian military officials coordinating the search and other officials in Abuja said Boko Haram insurgents split the girls into batches and held them at their camps in Madayi, Dogon Chuku and Meri, all around the Sector 3 operational division of the Nigerian military detachment confronting the group's deadly campaign.

Another source said there is a fourth camp at Kangarwa, also in Borno State. That claim could not be independently verified.
"Our team first sighted the girls on April 26 and we have been following their movement with the terrorists ever since," one of our sources said.
"That's why we just shake our heads when people insinuate that the military is lethargic in the search for the girls."

The location of the abducted girls – north east of Kukawa – opens a new insight into the logistic orientation of Boko Haram, responsible for thousands of deaths in a five-year long insurgency. President Goodluck Jonathan said the group has killed at least 12,000 people so far – that's minus the hundreds killed in a car bomb on Tuesday in Jos and the about 10 murdered on Sunday in Kano in a suicide bombing.

But the details established by the military shows that while the world's attention is focused on the Sambisa forest reserves, about 330 kilometres south of Maiduguri, the terrorists mapped a complex mission that began at Chibok, and veered north east of Sambisa, before heading to west of Bama and east of Konduga.

With the sighting, officials fear that Boko Haram militants may be seeking to create new options of escape all the way to Lo-gone-Et Chari in Cameroon to its Southeast, Lake Chad to its east and Diffa in Niger Republic to its north, providing a multiple escape options in the event of hostile ground operations against it.

Notwithstanding the sighting, the government is said not to be considering the use of force against the extremists, a choice informed by concerns for the safety of the students.

But with growing local and international pressure, a likely option may be for the authorities to enter into talks with the group, whose leader, Abubakar Shekau, in a May 12 video broadcast, called for dialogue and "prisoner" swap with the government.

The government has ruled out that option in the open but knowledgeable sources in Abuja hinted at a possible "twin track" approach that includes open rejection and a closet engagement.
"That option is not as bitter as you think in the face of the alternatives confronting us," the source who has deep insight on the thinking of the administration, said.
"Government is working hard to free the girls in less than one week, possibly before end of this week," the source said.

Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, a Major General, told PREMIUM TIMES he would not comment on the ongoing rescue operation.

"You don't expect me to tell you that the girls have been sighted or have not been sighted," Mr. Olukolade said. "I will only say our team are working hard and taking note of every information provided to ensure that our girls are rescued without delay."

Civic leader Shehu Sani who fired a letter to the Sultan of Sokoto and leader of Nigeria's Muslim, however told PREMIUM TIMES that what must be done urgently is for the Sultan to summon all the influential Islamic clerics with credibility in the north and use them to reach out to the insurgents to release the girls.

"As far as I know this has not been done and to expect the committee [headed by former army intelligence chief, Major General Sani Bako] now working to determine the situation of the Chibok abduction to help on this will be a waste of time," Mr. Sani said.

Venture Capital Fund, 440.ng, opens applications for the 2014 Lagos Accelerator Program

Posted: 21 May 2014 12:46 PM PDT

The venture capital fund, 440.ng, has opened applications for its 2014 Lagos accelerator program. The fund is a partnership between venture capital firms, 88mph and L5Lab, to bring early stage funding and the accelerator model to Nigeria. Having raised $1.5 million, the fund has begun screening start-ups for investment.

The 440 model, innovated by Y-combinator in 2005, invests small amounts – such as $20,000 to $110,000 - in about 10 start-ups at a time. Continue...

These start-ups are enrolled in a 3-month intensive program designed to rapidly accelerate the start-ups' product development, revenue generation, and customer acquisition. Start-ups are also connected to mentors, investors, partners such as Google for entrepreneurs, and key clients that may increase their chances of success.

"While we've been incredibly lucky to invest in great teams in the past, trying out this more scalable and intense model is the logical next step as we try to maximize our impact," said Chika Nwobi, Founder of L5Lab. "Besides capital, one of the biggest needs of start-ups is access to experienced mentors, key decision makers, and the kind of peer-to-peer interaction that this kind of program enables."

L5Lab and 88mph have invested in over 40 successful start-ups in Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria such asJobberman, Cheki, Apex Peak, Ghafla!, and Mdundo. The traits all these businesses share are that they use mobile/web technology to scale &disrupt traditional businesses, and target African consumers.

"Having seen the talent, hustler mentality, and sheer market size of Nigeria, I think we will see some amazing companies come out of this program", said KrestenBuch, Founder of 88mph. "Furthermore, the reception we've seen so far in Lagos, tells us that many experienced entrepreneurs and business leaders are looking to mentor, invest, and get involved in the mobile/web revolution that is happening in Nigeria right now. We will be announcing some of those who have agreed to get involved as mentors over the course of the summer" he added.

Both Chika and Kresten are former mobile/web entrepreneurs who have successfully started and exited businesses, and understand the need to test ideas quickly in the market, and prioritise revenue generating activities from the start to ensure that the business is firstly solving a real problem, and secondly to build the groundwork for a sustainable business early on. Both are elements that will be a central part of the 440 accelerator program.

Michael Jace’s murdered wife testified for him during divorce from his prior abusive marriage

Posted: 21 May 2014 06:12 AM PDT

On Monday night, The Shield actor, Michael Jace, murdered his wife. Police sources have revealed that Michael shot his wife dead in front of their two kids, who are under 10 years old. It's also been revealed that they argued over money before the murder took place at their LA home. But the most astounding revelation since this murder is that the dead wife, April Jace, defended Michael in his divorce from his ex-wife, an ex-wife he allegedly brutally and repeatedly beat up.

TMZ reports;
Michael Jace was a violent, abusive husband who choked his wife in front of their kid … this according to legal docs from his prior divorce in 1997.
A friend of Jennifer Bitterman claims she personally witnessed Jace choking and slamming Jennifer against a wall as his 6month-old son screamed in his crib next to them.
April Jace -- who was killed by a gunshot at the hands of Michael -- got involved in Michael's messy divorce to his previous wife and defended him to the hilt ... even though there were claims of brutality. Continue.
April told the divorce judge that Michael provided a stable home for his child, though she never addressed the claims he choked and hit Jennifer Bitterman and slammed her against the wall in front of their screaming son. In fact April actually attacked Jennifer by calling her a bad mom...

The most bone-chilling thing .... April talked about Michael's son with Jennifer, saying, "Usually at bedtime, he [Jordan, the child] prays for his mom and asks God to protect her while he's not there with her."

And this is interesting  ... April had a degree in Early Childhood/Adolescence development.

The friend says he was raging and out of control and "seeing the extent of his anger was one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen."

The friend continues … there were multiple physical assaults on the ex-wife. Still April went ahead and married him.

Earlier report
Actor Michael Jace called police himself to report his wife had been shot, and he had pulled the trigger Monday night in Los Angeles… TMZ has learned.

According to law enforcement sources Jace called 911 around 8:30 PM and told police … "I shot my wife."

We're told Jace's neighbors in the Hyde Park area of L.A. had reported shots fired in the home … and shortly thereafter Jace made his call to 911.

Sources tell us the actor stayed on the phone, as instructed, until LAPD arrived and found his 40-year-old wife, April Jace dead.

We're told Jace was home alone when his wife arrived with their kids … a short time later he allegedly shot her.

Jace — best know as Detective Lowe from "The Shield" — was taken into custody, and as of 1:00 AM Tuesday … was being questioned, but had not been booked for his wife's death.

Nigeria’s multibillion naira drones obsolete – Israeli Expert say

Posted: 21 May 2014 03:20 AM PDT

The multi-billion naira drones purchased by the Nigerian Government in 2006 for the surveillance of petroleum pipelines in the Niger Delta that might have been used by the military in the search for the missing Chibok girls are said to be obsolete due to lack of maintenance & use since they were bought

Vanguard reports that Tsur Dvir, a Marketing Officer for Aeronautics Defense Systems, a firm based south of Tel Aviv, that supplied Nigeria with Aerostar unmanned aerial vehicles, said yesterday that to the best of their knowledge, the drones are not operational.
"To the best of our knowledge, these systems are not operational. They (drones) are probably parked in a yard somewhere".
He said lack of maintenance have reduced their operational effectiveness and made them obsolete.  Tsur said they received a letter of inquiry for maintenance on the drones from the Nigerian govt but it was never followed through
"We did receive an inquiry from them about spare parts, but it never turned into a deal. I wish it had." he said.
Aerospace industry experts say each drone cost between $15 million and $17 million.

Meanwhile, Nigeria unveiled a locally-made drone at an Air Force base in Kaduna in December last year, although it has not flown since.

Borno State to spend N150m to rehabilitate 53 escapee girls, parents

Posted: 21 May 2014 12:59 AM PDT

Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, yesterday announced that the state government would be spending N150million for the rehabilitation of the 53 chibok girls that escaped from Boko Haram captivity as well as their parents whose source of livelihood was affected by the abduction, Sahara Reporters reports.
The Governor made this announcement when he received the Presidential Fact Finding Committee on the missing girls in his office yesterday. Gov Shettima decried the notion by some people that the missing Chibok girls was a scam or that it was a staged attempt by the state government to stop emergency rule extension in the state. Continue...

He called out former Minister of Aviation, Kema Chikwe for casting doubts on the authenticity of the abducted girls. He said the missing Malaysian plane was a good example of what is happening now, saying that with all the theories mounting up of the possibility that the passengers are dead, rescue efforts with massive investment is still going on in the search of the missing plane.
"Now, while that is going on, here is Nigeria, there was a report that over 200 human creatures, young Nigerian girls about completing their secondary school education, were attacked in their school at night and whisked away like slaves in ancient years. And some Nigerians, one of them a former Minister and one time member of the Federal Executive Council which is the highest decision making body of this country, worst of all, a woman and a mother, came out to cast doubt over the abduction of these girls. That woman completely disregarded the sensitivity of that issue, the pains of the agonizing parents and our pains as a Government, to whom, the parents of these girls, cry out in desperation, unimaginable confusion and anguish. Every other unreasonable Nigerian that came to adopt that view, only anchored the unfortunate position that was first expressed by Mrs Kema Chikwe." he said
The Governor also revealed that since the beginning of this year, N1billion has been spent on the rehabilitation of people and places that have experienced attacks from Boko Haram.
"In this year alone, we had spent close to one billion naira on victims. In Gwoza, we spent two hundred million naira for reconstruction of destroyed houses, markets, places of worship and to provide cash to victims so they could have something to rely on in the immediate term to feed themselves and families or start small businesses in the interim. In Bama, we spent three hundred million for same purpose; in Konduga we spent two hundred million naira" he said

Schoolgirls Abduction: What Governor Shettima told Presidential fact finding committee today (Tuesday) in Maiduguri

Highlights:

*N150m (about one million dollars) earmarked by Borno State Government  for medical counseling etc of 53 freed girls and material support to grieving parents who have been unable to focus on sources of livelihood

* Explanations on the decision above
* A. Committee enlarged to work with all stakeholders and international organizations on support to freed girls ‎and parents
"In the last three years, we have witnessed the most turbulent of times as a people. I have seen very terrible incidents as a Governor. I have come across innocent citizens of Borno killed in thousands, some slaughtered by fellow human beings who think they earn rewards from God by their brutality. I have witnessed high scale of destructions inflicted on us as a people in Borno by fellow human beings who again think they earn reward from God by their intentional and planned devastations. I have in the last 36 days, also come across a situation where men abducted young, innocent schoolgirls, separated them from their education, from their parents, from their relations and friends and from their environment and more disturbing also, attempted to separate them from their own religion out of compulsion. To every other Muslim, worldwide, these men that kill, destroy and abduct, insult Islam by calling themselves Muslims. They have contradicted every single tenet of the Islamic religion. They have in some cases, tried to change the ordained translation of verses in the Holy Quran. To every Muslim, a verse of the Holy Quran has clearly said that there is no compulsion in Religion. But to these men of violence, there is compulsion not only in religion but even in Islamic ideology. To these men, any human who doesn't share their ideology deserves to be brutally killed. A Muslim that is of not of the Boko Haram sect is condemned to death and so is Christian. To them, the human race should go into extinction for their doctrine to thrive.

Borno has seen evil times. Our people have suffered. At times, when I lament this carnage in the midst of some associates, they remind me that I didn't create Boko Haram, that in fact, I inherited it in 2011 when I was sworn-in amidst near complete breakdown of security in Maiduguri, the largest and most populated part of the State. But I normally say to them, that a leader is elected or appointed to solve problems, it doesn't matter whether the leader created the problem or not. A leader is elected to find solution, this is governance. There is a whole difference between Politics and Governance. In politics, you tell the general public and victims about a problem, you tell them the gravity of the problem; and with emphasis, you tell them who to blame for it. But in Governance, you identify a problem and work hard to solve it. Unfortunately for us in this interesting country, we all appear to lay more emphasis on politics than on governance. The Chibok incident, for me, has grossly exposed our weighty weakness as leaders in terms of assuming our shared responsibilities.
In the last two or three months, the entire western world mobilized men and resources, contributed so much funds in the search for a Malaysian airline which is believed to have crashed into the ocean. Majority in the western world, suspect that the crew and passengers of that Malaysian airline are most probably dead. Despite that, massive investment was and still being deployed in the search for whatever can be found as remains of those in that plane and its wreckage.

Now, while that is going on, here is Nigeria, there was a report that over 200 human creatures, young Nigerian girls about completing their secondary school education, where attacked in their school at night and whisked away like slaves in ancient years. Every other unreasonable Nigerian that came to adopt that view, only anchored the unfortunate position that was first expressed by Mrs Kema Chikwe. Doubt over that abduction pained me as much as the incident its self. Doubt over that abduction pained me far more than the childish theory, that as Government, we staged that abduction in order to create basis to stop the extension of emergency rule in Borno. By the way, that theory doesn't make the slightest sense. In relation to that theory, if a Government doesn't want extension of emergency and chooses to fake happenings, the Government should rather deny that the abduction ever took place, evil as that is, because the abduction is enough basis for the emergency extension given the fact that the incident puts a message across that there is new and big threat to students in schools hence the need for extension of emergency rule. Then, there was the issue of saying Chibok was not safe and we went ahead to open the school. Majority of these students are from Chibok axis, if the school was considered unsafe, I don't think any right thinking parent would allow his or her child to study in an atmosphere of high risk. But I will reserve some of my comments for a closed door session with this respected committee.

It hurts me however, that there was no kind of politics that was not introduced into that unfortunate Chibok incident. Even religion was brought in, all for the purpose of blame trade.
The politics didn't help anybody at the end of the day. Soon after that incident, we thought that our 53 daughters that either witnessed that attack or escaped from abduction be flown abroad for psychological counseling and some medical examinations. But then, with politics of doubt over the abduction, if the State Government had flown these 53 girls abroad, the doubting thermoses would have gotten what to fly about to claim that the 53 girls were none existent or they would have probably said, we were taking the girls away from the public, probably we had something to hide. While we do much, providing crucial support to security agencies and volunteers in order to prevent attacks, we have a policy in the State, that where attacks occur, we provide immediate material support as palliative to victims of insurgency. In this year alone, we had spent close to one billion naira on victims. In Gwoza, we spent two hundred million naira for reconstruction of destroyed houses, markets, places of worship and to provide cash to victims so they could have something to rely on in the immediate term to feed themselves and families or start small businesses in the interim. In Bama, we spent three hundred million for same purpose; in Konduga we spent two hundred million naira. Unfortunately, we had to hold what we should have done for Chibok because of the politics brought in. If we had released some material support earlier, some bad elements would have said we tried to buy the people of Chibok. Unlike other communities in which private houses and markets were destroyed, public institutions like the school, council secretariat, the residence of the council chairman and some few shops were destroyed in Chibok.  Communities didn't suffer material losses. But then, from our immediate thoughts when the attack took place and also based on our recent discoveries, most of the parents of these abducted girls have nothing to eat, they are so traumatized that they have abandoned their sources of livelihood. No true mother would easily concentrate on any line of business when her daughter is in the hands of violent abductors. The same it is for most fathers. I have a girl-child; I know the psychological connection between the girl-child and parents. One can hardly even pay the required attention in prayers due to the perpetual trauma of having one's girl-child in dangerous hands. So, are we going to continue to ignore these suffering parents and the 53 girls just because we are afraid of political accusations and false interpretations? The answer is NO. Governance is beyond the fear of accusations, Governance entails making a decision with sincerity of purpose and for the good of the society.

The Borno State Government will set aside the sum of one hundred and fifty million naira to fund a rehabilitation programme for the 53 girls and to support parents in Chibok whose sources of livelihood have been truncated by their trauma, leaving them with little or nothing to feed while we continue to work immeasurably for the release of the girls being held. The State Government is already in touch with key international organizations and a plan of action has already been proposed by the Ministry of Health in the State on issues relating to the health well being of the 53 girls as well as their colleagues soon as they are freed insha Allah. We are very optimistic that they will be freed. We have a quiet committee headed by the State's commissioner of health, she is a female medical doctor with specialty in reproductive health, she has experience in female advocacy with International contacts on the issues before us. We may need to enlarge the quiet committee to have all relevant stakeholders that include Chibok elders, PTA of the school, Security agencies in the State, the National Association of Nigerian Students, the association of Borno Students, the female wing of Christian Association of Nigeria, the Federation of Muslim Women of Nigeria, the district head of Chibok, some civil societies and specialists in psychological counseling etc, so that we move on while we must all work very hard in collaboration with the Federal Government to ensure the release of our daughters, given them medical care, counsel them, reintegrate them and ensure they are given the right to complete their exams.

Mr. Chairman, members of this important Committee, the Borno State Government is committed to sincere and active collaboration with the Federal Government and all other support groups in our collective fight against insurgency.

In continued collaboration, however, we must trust each other's sincerity of purpose. I see misconception about those behind Boko Haram as one major hindrance to fighting the insurgency. So long we continue to look the wrong way on who is or are behind Boko Haram, there would be lack of focus on the part of most stakeholders and in which case, the victims would remain the accused.
I wish this committee of respected men and women of impeccable character, a successful endeavor and I am confident that this committee has integrity, enough to guide it towards finding the facts on the attack of April 14, 2014 at Government Secondary School, Chibok.

I thank you for listening as I look forward to meeting you for a closed door session.
May God free our daughters from captivity and May He grant us eternal peace in Borno and the entire Nigeria"

El-Rufai sues PDP, Olisa Metuh, Thisday for N1.5billion

Posted: 21 May 2014 12:27 AM PDT

Former FCT Minister and Deputy National Secretary to All Progressive Congress, APC, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has instituted a N1.5billion libel suit against the PDP, its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh and ThisDay newspaper before a High Court in Abuja over statements he said were authorized by Metuh on behalf of the PDP linking him to the Boko Haram insurgency, which he finds defamatory.

El Rufai said the defamatory statements were published in Thisday newspaper which he joined in the suit as third defendant.

Mallam El-Rufai said that in a separate Thisday newspaper publications of March 17 and March 28, Metuh claimed that he (El-Rufai) collected N5billion as consultancy fee from the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi and also in another publication said that himself and Gen. Buhari know more about the Boko Haram insurgency. Continue...

He quoted one of the publications as saying,
"specifically, PDP cited the instance of an APC chieftain, ostensibly the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nasir El-Rufai, who collected N5billion for consultancy fees provided to the Central Bank and another N1.5billion diverted to APC to enable it open offices across the federation".
The former minister also quoted the publication of March 23 as being "boldly captioned as, 'In a daring move, PDP says Buhari, el-Rufai, know more about B'Haram'".

The former minister claimed that the publications caused him irreparable injury and damaged his hard-earned reputation.

He is specifically seeking an order awarding N1billion as general damages against Metuh and PDP.

He is also seeking another order awarding additional N500 million as general damages jointly and severally against all the three defendants, including ThisDay newspaper.

El-Rufai is also seeking the award for "the injury, embarrassment and distress suffered in respect of the loss of reputation and goodwill as a result of the malicious, unwarranted and defamatory utterance against the person of the plaintiff." He also seeks for a written apology be made published in the same medium as the defamatory statements.

The ex-minister equally wants the court to give an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from further defaming him.

The case has been adjourned till June 5 for mention before Justice Abubakar Talba.

Speaker of the House of Reps, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal has urged the Dubai Police to do everything within their power to resolve the mystery surrounding the death of sports broadcaster, Aisha Falode's son, Toba, who was thrown from a 17-storey building in Dubai in February 2014.

Hon Tambuwal gave this charge today when he received Amb. Rasheed Aldhaheri, the outgoing United Arab Emirate ambassador to Nigeria in his office at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Amb. Aldhaheri in his response said he has not been able to attend to the matter because he hasn't received any formal letter from Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He said he could only act upon it if a formal complaint is filed by the Nigerian authority.
