Senate Okays Emergency Rule in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa

The Senate today gave its nod for the extension of Emergency Rule in the troubled North East states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. The House of Reps had on May 15th approved the extension.

With the Senate's approval, extension of Emergency Rule by the Federal Government can now be effected by 6 months.

Footballer dies after horror tackle during Indonesian Premier League match

 A footballer has died from the injury he suffered on the pitch following a horror challenge during an Indonesian Premier League match.

Persiraja striker Akli Fairuz (in orange) was injured after taking a boot to the body from PSAP Sigli goalkeeper Agus Rahman as the pair raced for the ball in the area.

Players, clearly incensed by the tackle, clashed on the pitch while the referee had to be moved away by security.

Fairuz was substituted but managed to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines. However, the attacker later took a turn for the worse and had to be admitted to hospital. It was soon discovered that Fairus had suffered bladder leakage and, a few days after the match, passed away from his internal injuries. Sad. May his soul rest in peace. Pres. Jonathan condemns Jos bomb blast, releases press statement

The President has released a press statement condemning the bomb blast that occurred this afternoon at Terminus market in Jos. Find the statement signed by his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, below
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan strongly condemns the bomb blasts in Jos, Plateau state, today, describing the perpetrators of this tragic assault on human freedom as cruel and evil.  He has also directed all relevant agencies to mobilise support and relief efforts in aid of the victims. The President extends his heartfelt sympathies to the affected families and persons.
President Jonathan assures all Nigerians that government remains fully committed to winning the war against terror, and this administration will not be cowed by the atrocities of enemies of human progress and civilization. Continue...
President Jonathan has also expressed Nigeria's deepest appreciation to the international community on the success of the recent Summit in Paris on the security situation in Nigeria hosted by the President of France, H.E. Francois Hollande.
He reaffirms Nigeria's commitment to the implementation of the resolutions reached by the Summit, in addition to existing measures already being taken by the administration to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of lives.
President Jonathan states that the Federal Government of Nigeria is prepared to strengthen existing mechanisms to ensure the immediate implementation of the resolutions of The Summit, among which are:

  1. That every necessary measure should be taken to find the school girls abducted by Boko Haram terrorists from Government Girls' Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State on 14th April 2014;
     
  2. That Nigeria and other countries in the sub-region will continue to co-operate and co-ordinate efforts to combat the Boko Haram menace.
     
  3. That the Heads of State have agreed that each country will contribute one battalion of troops to the international force set up to patrol the border areas, in line with the Resolution of the Lake Chad Basin Commission. France, United States of America and the United Kingdom will extend technical assistance to achieve this objective;
     
     
  4. That the countries will come together to put in place an effective border management regime;
     
  5. That no effort will be spared to stop the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and the supply of arms and equipment made available to terrorists.
     
    President Jonathan considers these measures very useful aspects of the concerted international effort to combat terrorism and put an end to the Boko Haram menace. In addition, the President, in Abuja, today, directed relevant government agencies to ensure enhanced implementation of the following programmes in the areas affected by Boko Haram atrocities:
     
    (i)      Emergency relief assistance:  The intensification of on-going relief assistance programmes by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)) in partnership with donor agencies.  The programme will ensure rapid deployment of relief assistance to the affected local government areas and communities.  This will include provision of food supplies, medical supplies, basic relief commodities, and conditional cash transfer programmes for affected households;
     
    (ii)     Rapid needs assessment:  To support additional intervention programmes in the region, the President has also directed that on-going rapid needs assessment by government agencies should be accelerated to identify affected communities and households and assess the extent of damage to public and private infrastructure, amongst others.
     
    (iii)    Safety of schools: President Jonathan has also reiterated Nigeria's determination to ensure the safety and security of schools in Borno and other parts of the country and also provide counselling services to any affected students to enable them return to school and continue with their academic work.
    Furthermore, the Federal Government of Nigeria will rebuild the Chibok School and fortify security in schools. In collaboration with the UN Secretary-General's Envoy on Education, former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the private sector, the government will launch the "Safe Schools Initiative" which will address security issues; re-build the destroyed schools; and provide equipment and materials.

Graphic pic: Over 200 killed this afternoon in Jos twin bomb blast

OK, apparently the bomb explosion that occurred this afternoon at the densely populated Terminus Market near Murtala Mohammed way in Jos is more serious than we thought. The twin explosion, which occurred 30 minutes apart, reportedly killed at least 200 people according to eye-witnesses, making it deadlier than the Nyanya blast.

The bomb was planted in two cars, a Peugeot J5 van and a Toyota Sienna SUV with a Gombe state license plate number. Eye-witnesses said the car had been parked near the busy market since early this morning and had even drawn the curiosity of people in the area who allegedly alerted the police. Two big explosions rock Jos, many killed

Two big explosions this afternoon ripped through the market located at Jos Terminus behind the popular Ahmadu Bello way in Jos, Plateau state.

Details are sketchy at the moment and the number of casualty is unknown but eye-witnesses are tweeting pics from the scene. Details later. See more pics after the cut...

Update: The first explosion occurred at 2.30pm, the second one 30 minutes later, killing scores. The first explosion reportedly went off in a Sienna Space bus, but didn't kill many people but the second one, which occurred as people came back to rescue the injured from the first explosion, recorded a high number of casualty. Men of the Fire Service, NEMA and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps are currently at the scene helping with rescue efforts.

The baby is the first for Ciara, who is engaged to rapper Future and expected to marry him in the next few months. Future has three other children from three other women.

Traditional hunters say they are ready to join search for Chibok girls

Traditional hunters in some Northern states say they are ready to join the military in the search for missing Chibok girls, Associated Press reports.
 
According to the report, the hunters numbering about 500 and ranging between 18 to 80 years old have been in Borno state for two weeks now waiting for the government and the military to give them the permission to go after the missing girls. 

The hunters say their magic charms would prevent any blood being drawn from their body. They also expressed their belief in their herbs wrapped in leather pouches as well as cowrie shells, animal teeth and leather bracelets, including a cocktail of fetish substances which provides them spiritual powers that protects them from being pierced by bullets. "We're not saying we are better than the soldiers, but we know the bush better than the soldiers. We are seasoned hunters, the bush is our culture and we have the powers that defy guns and knives; we are real men of courage, we trust in Allah for protection, but we are not afraid of Boko Haram. If government is ready to support us, then we can bring back the girls. But if they are not, they should tell us so that we can disband and return to our homes and family," said one elderly hunter, Baban Kano.

"The Shield" actor Michael Jace arrested for killing his wife of 9 years

US actor Michael Jace has been arrested for shooting his wife dead at their South Los Angeles home. According to reports, the actor, best known for his role on The Shield as Julien Lowe, a gay police officer struggling with his sexual identity, called 911 late last night Monday May 19th and confessed to shooting his wife of nine years.

When police got to their home at Brynhurst Avenue in Hyde Park, they were met by Michael Jace, 51, and discovered April Jace, 40, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, NBC reports.

April Jace was declared dead by paramedics at the scene. The couple's two children, both boys under the age of 10, were in the home at the time of the shooting but LA police said it is unclear whether the boys witnessed the shooting and still do not know why the actor shot his wife dead. Actor and film maker Prince Eke has released an official press statement in regards to the recent theft scandal involving himself, a South Africa based rapper named Prosper and actress Angela Okorie.
 
In the statement released exclusively to Encomium magazine, Prince Eke apologized to his fans for getting himself involved in the messy scandal. He also advised Angela Okorie to desist from spreading the allegations of him conniving with Prosper to spoil her name. His statement below...
"My fans, family, friends and colleagues, my sincere apology to you all for finding myself in this messy situation out of the fact that I wanted to help an up and coming artiste to realize her dream in movie making in South Africa which I consider as giving back by helping others grow. This is not the first time I am doing this. I have always been into charity works but unfortunately, this has put me and my name in a messy situation just because I had to speak the truth. I say so because morally, I couldn't stand to see or witness another man messing around with another man's wife. Continue...
This is just the crime I committed and the lady involved is now dragging my name in the mud, saying she got me passport to travel to South Africa. For God's sake, I flew United Airways to Houston on January 30th, 2014 to film. I proceeded to Maryland where I shot another movie directed by Kingsley Ukaegbu, featuring Best Davies, Moses Efret and Oge Okoye. I returned to Nigeria on march 13 2014 and this was three weeks before the South African trip. So its stupid for someone to say she got me passport. It is very sad that when you try to support people to grow, they turn around and stab you at the back. $1,000 my foot! This is someone who actually begged and pleaded that she can't afford to pay me, that I should help her. I still have a munched copy of the SMS she sent with her phone number.

"On the issue of paying my flight to South Africa, professionally, a producer is responsible for flights, accommodation and welfare of artiste during the production. So she wasn't doing me a favor. Why would she say I connived with Prosper to Blackmail her? Come on, that's too cheap. This someone I even persuaded an American based Director{ Kingsley Ukaegbu) to feature in a movie I have booked to film in Maryland in July 2014. What more can one do to satisfy people on earth? I also have a munched copy of my conversation with Kingsley. So what could have gone wrong for one to think that I want to blackmail her? Besides, she first introduce prosper to me as her boyfriend. How now could he be more of my friend than Hers?"
 
"My advice is for Angela Okorie is please get a life. It is not too late for you to package yourself into becoming a virtuous woman. That way you would regain your lost dignity with ease. I don't wish to be mentioned in this matter anymore. And Please be warned! This should be between you and Prosper because only the two of you know what transpired. And for my fans, Family and Friends, I am sorry for being mentioned in such a dirty topic. I stand to be corrected. God bless you all".

Nigerian girl emerges best graduating student at American university

20 year old Delta state born Merrilyn Akpapuna (pictured above) on May 10th 2014 emerged overall Best Graduating Student of Dillard University, New Orleans, USA.

Merrilyn, the daughter of a dental surgeon, graduated with a first class honors in Psychology. She also won two other awards for highest academic achievements for the College of Arts and Sciences and College of General Studies.

Her feat made her share the podium with US First Lady, Michelle Obama, who attended the school's convocation. Merrilyn is pictured above with the President of Dillard University, Dr Walter Kimbrough. Congrats to her. What an inspiration. Continue...

Over the weekend, 50 cent's oldest son Marquise Jackson claimed the famous rapper skipped his high school graduation. A disappointed Marquis, who cried with his mum, took to instagram to let people know what his dad did and black twitter came after 50. Guess high school graduation is a pretty big deal to some.

Gen. Buhari has denied that the Mohammed Buhari who was arrested by EFCC for N20million scam is his adopted son. The man had claimed to be related to the former military head of state. (read here)

Reacting yesterday, chairman of the Buhari Vanguard, Jasper Azuatalam, said Gen. Buhari had no need to adopt any children as God had blessed him with both male and female children.
Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) wishes to state categorically that he does not have any adopted son called "Muhammed Buhari" and had no need to adopt a son at any time having been blessed with choice children, both male and female.
 "Muhammadu Buhari and his family do not know the said "Muhammed Buhari" who is alleged to be involved in a N20m scam and is being held by the EFCC as reported."
Muhammadu Buhari is blessed with very decent and disciplined children who obviously took after their father.
"His children have no single record of stealing and inordinate behaviour anywhere in the world. They do not seek attention, but have proven the stuff their father is made of any time their character is put to test," The statement read in part

Pics of soldiers killed by Boko Haram that caused military mutiny in Maiduguri

Very often we hear that soldiers in battle with the dreaded Islamic sect Boko Haram were killed, but we hardly get to see the fallen officers. Well, here are two of them. The officer on the left is Major Olalekan Akintola, aka Lokoso, he was one of the officers ambushed and killed by Boko Haram men last Wednesday night. The officer on the right is Lt Odushina Oluwafemi, he and his fellow soldiers were killed when their convoy was ambushed by Boko Haram after their GOC, Major General Abubakar Mohammed, made them make an unusual trip, his friends say.

Their deaths sparked a mutiny against the GOC. Y'all remember the story last week. The GOC has since been redeployed because of the incident.

Lt Odushina Oluwafemi attended Air Force Secondary School Ikeja, and has served as part of the UN peace keeping forces in Darfur. He went to Pakistan for additional training course and was only deployed to Maiduguri in March 2014 where he met his untimely death. May their souls rest in peace.

Yesterday, the Northern Elders' Forum urged the Federal Government to negotiate with Boko Haram for the release of abducted Chibo girls. Do you think FG should, or not?
