Senator-elect Dino Melaye wants allowances, salaries of legislators reduced Posted: 27 May 2015 01:09 PM PDT Read the press statement below... Senator-elect, Otunba Dino Melaye, said he has never been a government contractors and will not be one. He also called on Nigerians to pressurize the incoming Assembly to reduce exuberant salaries and allowances of Nigerian legislators. Melaye who will be representing Kogi West Senatorial District under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), spoke in Abuja on Tuesday night during a reception organized in his honour his friends and relatives.According to him, the high cost of running the National Assembly is unacceptable because Nigeria is in a serious financial crisis. "Leaders must make sacrifices in order to move the country forward. Contrary to suggestions from certain quarters, I will not relinquish my activism while in the Senate. I will continue to oppose anything that is not in the interest of Nigerians. "I have never done government contracts in my life, from local, state to federal levels. I have never done any. I will never do it. Some people said I should abandon activism. We have gotten to a stage in this country where people from the grassroots can win elections. Politics is not elitist. For me, in the Senate, anyone that is expecting me to go there and become quiet, your dream will not come to pass. "Where we need to say no, we will say a capital no. Where we need to say yes, we will say yes. For me, in a just society, silence is a crime. We have no other country to call our own, but Nigeria," Melaye stated. Speaking specifically on the need to reduce allowances of legislators, he said: "Until we get to an acceptable level in this country, no legislator should keep quiet. This may not be palatable to my colleagues, but I am using this opportunity to call on all Nigerians that in the 8th National Assembly, we must cut the pay of legislators. It may not be okay. But we all need to make sacrifices. He who must come to equity must come with clean hands. "If we must tell agencies of government to call down expenses, we must lead by examples. I want to appeal to my colleagues to support me so that when we get down to the floor, we will cut down all our allowances. Already, we are on perilous times. There is need for correction. We cannot do it. It will take the people to energise us. "Nigerians must rise up and tell their legislators to support pay cut. The executive too should cut down its expenses. For instance, in the art budget, N3 billion was budgeted for the president's travels. Where is the president travelling to? Is he the president of the world? The people need to encourage us to do the right things."

'I loved being part of a huge family – and I want that for North. My husband killed our son - heartbroken mother writes Posted: 27 May 2015 12:50 PM PDT Heartbreaking story told my a mother (Daniel at 2years old and Jeremy a newborn). Read below... My ex-husband and I got married because I was pregnant. It was a stupid reason to get married, I know, but we were 23 and there was pressure from parents—basically from everyone – so we went ahead with it. John and I had been dating for about a year, and in February 2000, we were husband and wife. My pregnancy was a tough one. I was put on bed rest halfway through, and at about 33 weeks I felt something that I thought was my water breaking. The doctors said everything was fine, but when I went to an appointment a couple weeks later, they rushed me to be induced because I had no fluid left. I was just past 35 weeks when I had Jeremy, but he'd gone for two weeks with very little fluid, so it was as if he was delivered at 33 weeks. When he was born on May 27, the doctors said Jeremy was healthy, but I noticed right away that he cried all the time. Not just cry, scream. It was 18 to 22 hours of crying every day, and John was working long hours – he was a restaurant cook – so no one was getting very much sleep. Jeremy had a lot of stomach issues and rejected every formula we tried. Plus, we were living with my parents in their small town of Zeeland, Mich., while we got on our feet. It was a stressful time. On July 3, when Jeremy was just over five weeks old, I went to get him out of his crib in the morning and his head looked funny. It was sort of pointy at the top and flat on the sides. I thought it was because we slept him on his side (it was the only way he wouldn't cry). He didn't seem to be in any pain, but I took him to the doctor that day to be safe. John came with me. During the appointment, I remember the doctor specifically asking, "Has the baby had any trauma?" I said no. John said no. So the doctor just said the flatness was probably due to sleeping so much on the same side, and that we should try the opposite side going forward. The next night, after we went to see the 4th of July fireworks, Jeremy wouldn't stop crying. I stayed up most of the night with him while John slept, but eventually I was so tired I couldn't do it anymore. I woke John up, asked if he could stay with the baby while I slept for a little, and he agreed. At 3:45, I went to sleep. Less than two hours later, at 5:30 am, John woke me up with Jeremy in his arms, panicked, saying Jeremy wasn't breathing. I was disoriented and confused. I thought maybe something had happened related to all of the baby's stomach problems. Or that maybe Jeremy vomited and it was stuck in his throat, or maybe it was SIDS — I didn't know what was going on. Jeremy was, in fact, breathing, but it was very shallow. One breath every 35 seconds or so. We called 911, but because it was a small town, the police were all volunteers and it took them 15 minutes to get to our house. When they did, they started CPR and the EMTs tried to intubate him. But he was a tiny baby — a 5-week-old who'd been a preemie, so he was basically just full-term size — and they used an adult-sized tube, so they ended up ripping the lining of his throat. They put him in an ambulance and I was in the front seat, with John and my parents trailing behind, and I remember one of the EMTs calling the ER asking what dose of epi to give Jeremy because he'd stopped breathing. The ER worked on Jeremy for three hours before I got any update, but I saw him as he was wheeled past the waiting room for tests. There were tubes everywhere. He was intubated, had IVs, his eyes were shut and his head was swollen. I couldn't believe it was my child. And I still had no idea what happened – no one had told me anything. Eventually the pediatric specialist told me that Jeremy had a skull fracture and retinal hemorrhaging, as well as some broken ribs, which might have been from the CPR. What the doctor really zeroed in on was the skull fracture, and asked if I might know how it happened. Daniel, my 2-year-old, used to have a big Tonka truck he loved to share with the baby, so I guessed that maybe he threw the truck into the crib. But the doctor said no, this injury had to have been caused by someone. I was wracking my brain, trying to think of who had held him at the 4th of July celebration. I had no idea what could have caused it, and John stood there and said nothing. Because of the skull fracture, the doctor told me they would have to call the police and Child Protective Services. I remember thinking, "Why are they calling the police? How are they going to fix Jeremy?" I still didn't understand that someone actually hurt him. I thought it was an accident. The doctor was very cryptic with the information he gave me: I knew they were taking Jeremy for more tests, that he had a skull fracture, and that they were calling the police. That was it. Two male detectives arrived and questioned me in a hospital conference room for 45 minutes. They wanted to know everything – about my pregnancy, about what life was like at home. They asked me for my theories about what happened and I answered honestly: I didn't know. I remember saying, "I can't tell you because I have no clue." John went in after me and he was in that room for four hours. I couldn't figure out what was taking so long, but also couldn't wrap my head around what was happening. Whose life was this? I went from having a seemingly healthy baby and happy family to one who was hooked up to tubes and a family being questioned by police in a matter of hours. Eventually, the detectives emerged from the conference room. They gave me this strange look and just said, "Your husband needs to talk to you." So I went in, and it was just John and me, and he looked at me and said "I did it. It was me." I didn't understand. "You did what? What was you?" "I'm the one who caused this to happen," he said. I just kept saying "I don't understand," and pretty soon the detectives walked back in. The four of us sat down at the conference table — the detectives didn't want to leave us alone for very long, since they needed to hear everything John had to say. He tried to explain: "Jeremy was screaming and I couldn't handle it." John said he'd been holding Jeremy so they were facing each other, and Jeremy's head was in his hands, and he just squeezed because he was so frustrated, and when he squeezed he fractured Jeremy's skull. I didn't understand how anyone could have the physical strength to do something like that with their bare hands, until one of the detectives picked up an empty box of tissues and squeezed the sides. The box crumpled pretty easily – that was what had happened, they said. John said he snapped. That he couldn't handle the screaming anymore. I asked why he didn't just get me, or my parents, and he said it happened before he realized what he was doing. But then the detectives told him to tell me the whole story, and it turned out that John did the same thing two nights earlier. That's why Jeremy's head had been misshapen. I was so confused. I said, "so when his head was flat the other morning, that had to do with you? Why didn't you just tell the doctor?" He didn't say anything. After that, they took John to jail. The doctors let me see Jeremy. They told me the damage was extensive – they wouldn't know exactly what was wrong until his brain swelling went down, but they knew that he was blind and deaf, that he had lost his cough gag reflex, and that he couldn't breathe on his own. We first called 911 around 5:30 a.m., and I went home at around 9 p.m. to get Daniel and to try and sleep. I remember sitting in the shower, just staring — not even crying — not believing that this was my life, or that I had to go back to the hospital soon to see my son who was pretty much brain-dead, at the hands of his father. My 2-year-old son Daniel had been at the neighbors' house – he ended up having to get a full-body x-ray but luckily John, who was not his biological father, had never hurt him. That first night, he just laid in bed with me. I swear that boy saved my life that evening. I was heartbroken, and if I didn't have him, I don't know what I would have done. Over the next two and a half weeks, I bounced between the hospital and the court. I was still in denial about John – I couldn't imagine that he did it – but he didn't get bail. I only saw him face-to-face once during that time, for a half hour. I asked him to reiterate what happened, he told the same story. Meanwhile, Jeremy was being kept alive by machines. The doctors were encouraging me to sign a DNR, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. It felt like signing a death wish. But 11 days after he got hurt, Jeremy's breathing tube fell out while he was getting a bath. We ended up not putting it back in, and while he did breathe on his own, he needed to be constantly suctioned because saliva would build up, and he was on a feeding tube. A few days later, the doctors told me I needed to call hospice. As it turned out, we never got that far. On July 22, 2000, Jeremy died. His breathing was slow and labored, and while I'd been telling him to fight for a couple of weeks, this time I just looked at him and said, "It's ok, you can go." Within two minutes, he was gone. It was the most painful and most beautiful moment of my life. It had been a gray and cloudy day, and the minute he died, the sun come out. He was no longer in any pain. John ended up being charged with second-degree murder. He pled guilty, and the case never went to trial. After he was sentenced – 17 to 33 years – I filed divorce papers. By then, I had accepted that he had killed Jeremy. My therapist said I was compartmentalizing, that for a while I couldn't focus on John's role in what happened because I was entirely concentrated on being there for my son. But after Jeremy died, I had a lot of anger. A lot. John and I had gone through rough patches, but I never in a million years thought he was capable of something like this. He was never aggressive or rough. If anything, I was the aggressive one. It became incredibly hard to trust anyone.
During that time, I met my now-husband, Mark, and I gave birth to our daughter, Lexi, in November 2001. For the first eight weeks of her life, I barely let Mark touch her. He's been a saint with everything I've been through, and it's been hard for me to trust my kids in the care of other people. But we've since moved to Texas, and it was the best thing for us. I haven't been back to Michigan since I left. John's 17 years will be up in two years. I'm told he'll likely get out then for good behavior, but I'm going to fight it. I think he should serve the full 33 years. I don't get to have Jeremy back, so why should he not have to serve his entire sentence? Jeremy would have been 15 today. Every morning I wake up and think of him, but the days get easier and easier, and a decade and a half later the pain isn't constant. May is hard, since it's Jeremy's birthday. July is hard, since it's when he died. But every May and every July, the kids and my new husband save my life all over again. I couldn't do it without them. YP

There is a petition to take back Iggy Azalea's Billboard win Posted: 27 May 2015 01:03 PM PDT There's a Change.org petition asking Billboard to strip Iggy Azalea of her Top Rap Song win is quickly gaining thousands of signatures. The petition has over 17,000 signatures so far and claims that Azalea's win was invalid as her song "Fancy" did not meet eligibility requirements. The petition started by Tennessee resident Christian Ferguson reads "The eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015. 'Fancy' was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting,". "This is unfair to the other nominees in these category, especially to 'Anaconda' by Nicki Minaj, who most likely would've won. Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without 'Fancy' as a nominee." "Fancy" was released last February and the nominees were chosen based on album and digital song sales, radio plays, streams, touring and social media engagement. Azalea's song featuring Charli XCX made history when it remained at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for seven consecutive weeks. The rapper and Billboard have yet to comment on the petition. Azalea beat out Big Sean, Nicki Minaj and Bobby Shmurda for the award.

Nollyfund: Viva Cinema opens in Kwara Posted: 27 May 2015 10:07 AM PDT Still basking in the euphoria of a bustling business in Ibadan, Viva Cinema Company Limited has again, opened a new film house in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital. Sponsored by Bank of Industry (BoI), the company's latest cinema house was opened to movie goers amidst a huge ceremony, last Friday. The gesture by BoI is part of its 'Nollyfund' initiative, whereby an initial of N1.0billion has been earmarked, with a single obligor limit of N50million for individual loans.
The Bank, which has been at the forefront of providing facilities for film production and distribution chain, is also helping filmmakers to produce international quality films which are screened through various platforms of movie distribution available both in Nigeria and abroad. The opening of Viva Cinema which is located within the popular Shoprite Mall, Ilorin, attracted a huge crowd that thronged the Cinema Hall l, to relish the opening films and the physical presence of their adorned stars. Some of the Nollywood stars at the event are Olumide Bakare, Bukunmi Oluwasina and Muyiwa Oladapo. Speaking with reporters, representative of the sponsoring company and Bol's Divisional Head for Large Enterprises, Joseph Babatunde, said the Bank has invested millions of Naira into the industry. He recalled that VIVA Cinema was also established in Ibadan, Oyo state recently. "We have spent quite some money to support the company," he said. According to Babatunde, "the entertainment industry holds a lot in terms of provision of employment. You will recall, the 2013 rebased Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the creative industry contributed about 1.6 percent (six million Dollars). That means the industry holds a lot of potentials. Scores of youths who come out of the university with a lot of talents can exercise themselves through the promotion of the creative industry. "For us in the Bank of Industry, we have made adequate arrangement to support the creative industry. For instance, we support this in Ilorin. There are youths who are working there; you remember in those days the cinema culture was a great privilege. "What we are trying to do is to bring back the same cultural values and by bringing them back we believe that a lot of youths will be employed." The banker noted that the movie industry has a lot of challenges bedeviling it in Nigeria. "It is not only funding that is the key issue with the creative industry in Nigeria - a major issue is that of distribution. Without effective distribution, there is no way you can make your money back. This cinema platform is a major outlet for the purpose of distributing movies. Apart from the fact that we have standard studios; a lot of filmmakers go to South Africa, Canada and United States of America to shoot their films, which is not good enough for the industry. "So we still need a lot of investment in standard studios so that our film producers can shoot their films locally, coupled with the cinema centers coming. For us in the Bank of Industry, we have financed about four cinema outlets and before the end of this year we will add another 25 or thereabout across the nation," he said. It will be recalled that BoI recently gave opportunity to filmmakers who desire sponsorship for their scripts, having accredited some reputable distributors to support the initiative. They include, G-Media, FilmOne Distribution Company, Silverbird Distribution Company and Genesis Deluxe Distribution Company. Others include studio operators such as Fans Connect Online Nigeria Limited, aka Afrinolly, Kingsley Ogoro Productions Limited and 4Screams International Nigeria Limited. The Bank of Industry had also in recent past, financed creative industry projects such as 'Half of A Yellow Sun', 'Flower Girl', Digitization of Silverbird Cinemas, The Filmhouse, Viva Cinemas, Ozone Cinemas and G-media among others. According to the veteran actor, Olumide Bakare, the film producers in the country have been able to improve the standard and content of Nigerian movies technically, noting that, "the development can help the Nigerian movies as we are creating jobs; bringing new artistes. We want the old ones to go and rest, but I am still very relevant."

Man shares his opinion on Bola Tinubu receiving Guinean President instead of Osinbajo Posted: 27 May 2015 09:44 AM PDT I found an article from social crusader and community activist, Prince Emmanuel Ohai which he shared on Facebook very interesting and thought to bring it here to find out what you guys think. In his piece, Ohai queried why APC national leader Bola Tinubu was the one to receive the visiting president of Guinean, Alpha Conde in Lagos yesterday May 26th in the absence of Buhari instead of the VP-elect, Yemi Osinbajo. He raised many other penitent issues. Read his article after the cut and tell us what you think... Here is how a reputable Nigerian online news outfit reported the visit to Nigeria of Guinea's President Alpha Conde.QUOTE: "President Conde will be meeting with top Nigerian captains of Industry in Lagos in an attempt to lure investments to his mineral-rich country. He is also expected to hold a private session with the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress, Bola Tinubu" UNQUOTE: elombah .com Now, I do not know why in the absence of the Nigerian Government officials, the leader of APC and God Father of President-elect Buhari, Chief Bola Tinubu was receiving foreign head of state at the VIP wing of the Murtala Muhammad airport. Aside from the obvious national security issues raised, there's concern that those we elected are stooges of the vested interest. Granted that the President elect is out of the country on a private visit to U.K. Why wasn't the Vice President-elect Pastor Yemi Osinbajo not the one welcoming this visiting head of state? In recent news, a PDP Stalwart Kashamu Buruji's home was and is still beseiged by officials of Nigeria Drug, Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) trying to arrest and extradite him to the U.S. to answer charges related to trafficking of heroin into the United States. Even though Buruji's party is People's Democratic Party, he might as well be a member of All Progressive Congress. I know some reading this may be naive enough to think that there are no Kahumu Burujis in APC. Also the gullible ones reading this, especially the ones that voted for this kind of CHANGE may think the "Burujis" in APC have been banned from having access to foreign heads of state or are banned from using the proposed "Bola Tinubu Airport" in Lekki. I know its depressing to note that the possibility exists that an airport may be named after Jagaban while all Awo got was a University named after him. Very sad day indeed. In an advertorial in a full page National Newspaper after the results of the Presidential elections were announced, Buruji had in an unprecedented fashion heaped praises on the leader of APC as his hero and the undisputed new leader of the Yorubas (New Awo) When I saw that advert, I was not surprised because both Chief Bola Tinubu and Kashamu Buruji have one thing in common. Both had been indicted at some point for trafficking heroin by the District Court of Northern Illinois, U S.A. While we are still on the subject of having things in common. The visiting President of Guinea and the incoming APC Government led by Rtd. General Buhari have both enlisted former British Prime Minister Tony Blair as their "unpaid" adviser. Also, the country of Guinea has been under the threat of Latino drug cartels that are seeking new West African client states since their key smuggling route to Europe had been destroyed by French military action in Mali. Rtd. General Buhari who himself is not squeaky clean considering his involvement with the Emir of Gwandu's 53 suitcases but a stand-up "guy" with upright character was in my humble opinion deliberately sidelined by the Jagaban in this private business talk with the visiting President of Guinea. It is also my opinion that the side-lining of the Vice-President who is a Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church by Jagaban was deliberate. We all know that as a pastor of the redeemed Church, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo may be averse to some kinds of shady business, reason why he may have been sidelined in these talks with President Conde. I am not saying that Prof. Osinbajo is squeaky clean but I am sure you get my drift. Right now, I won't be surprised if the construction of the Lekki Airport is intensified and the completion within the next couple of years. That too in my humble opinion will be a deliberate attempt by Jagaban to reduce by half his travel time by road to Murtala Muhammad to receive visitong foreign dignataries or sidelines f you are an un-apologetic freedom fighter for truth, you might conclude its a modern way of by-passing the Security at the Murtala Muhammad airport. The PDP never had a dominant leader and God-father like Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The closest person was an Octogerian in the person of Chief E.K. Clark. Very un-faur to try to draw any comparison between the two. For one, E.K. is a statesnan who served hus country well. He played the role of confidant and mentor to outgoing Presudent Goodluck Jonathan. Say what you like about E.K. Clark, he would never have been emboldened to receive foreign head of states while side lining Vice President Namadi Sambo. If this is what we voted for.... so be it. And if it is not the decent thing to do is what I am doing right now. I am not a soothsayer but I have a feeling we will be doing a lot of this in the next 4 years or so. Finally, may I seize this opportunity to wish the President-elect Goodluck in his onerous task of fulfilling his campaign promises such as making a barrel of crude oil sell for $100; paying unemployed graduates 5,000 a month for 2 years; making the exchange rate for $1 to equal 1 Naira, to scrap the Presidential fleet etc. May God bless Nigeria!
