China orders Muslim shopkeepers to sell alcohol, cigarettes, to ‘weaken’ Islam Posted: 09 May 2015 01:23 PM PDT Muslim shops and restaurants in a Chinese village have been ordered to sell alcohol and cigarettes in an effort to weaken Islam's hold on residents in China's Xinjiang region. Shop owners who refuse face closure and prosecution, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported Monday. It is the latest in a series of anti-Muslim campaigns by Chinese authorities in the name of fighting religious extremism to undermine Islam influence in northwestern China. Chinese authorities in Laskuy township issued a notice to residents in Aktash village last week saying in part, "all restaurants and supermarkets in our village should place five different brands of alcohol and cigarettes in their shops before (May 1, 2015)." Shopkeepers were also instructed to promote the products in "eye-catching displays." Authorities warned that "anybody who neglects this notice and fails to act will see their shops sealed off, their business suspended, and legal action pursued against them." The notice also said the order was handed down from the top ranks of China's ruling Communist Party. "We have a campaign to weaken religion here and this is part of that campaign," Adil Sulayman, Aktash village party committee secretary. "Since 2012, people have stopped selling alcohol and cigarettes through their businesses. Even those who benefited financially from the practice have given it up because they fear public scorn. That is why (the order was issued)." Many locals in Aktash and other parts of Laskuy who practice Islam have decided to abstain from drinking and smoking, and selling the products was considered taboo for religious reasons. Sulayman told RFA that authorities in Xinjian viewed nonsmoking Muslims as "a form of religious extremism." The Quran refers to the use of alcohol and any intoxicants or self-destructive practices as a sin. Government officials and children in the predominately Muslim Xinjiang province have been banned from attending mosques or observing the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins June 17. The notice, obtained by RFA and posted on Twitter, ordered all restaurants and supermarkets in Aktash to sell five different brands of alcohol and cigarettes and display them prominently. "Anybody who neglects this notice and fails to act will see their shops sealed off, their businesses suspended, and legal action pursued against them," the notice said. Radio Free Asia, which provides some of the only coverage of events in Xinjiang to escape strict Chinese government controls, said Hotan prefecture, where Aktash is located, had become "a hotbed of violent stabbing and shooting incidents between ethnic Uighurs and Chinese security forces." China says Uighur militant groups based abroad are using the Internet to inspire local Muslims to take up violent jihad against the state. Critics say China's long repression of Uighur rights and nationalist sentiment has pushed people toward Islam as the only permitted assertion of their community's identity, and pushed a minority toward a violent form of Islam. Clumsy attempts to promote alcohol or forbid beards and veils may prove counterproductive, they warn. In January, Legislators in China's far-western Xinjiang province passed a law to prohibit residents from wearing burqas in public, in a continued campaign against what authorities view as religious extremism. The Karamay city authorities targeted veils, large beards, as well as three types of Islamic dresses -- including those with the star and crescent symbol. Dozens of bus stations in the city were said to be manned by security personnel to conduct checks and report violators to the police. Washington Post. |

WHO warns that Ebola may be transmitted sexually Posted: 09 May 2015 09:07 AM PDT The World Health Organisation has issued an interim advice on the possibility of Ebola Virus of being sexually transmitted. The WHO had directed all Ebola survivors and their sexual partners to receive counselling to guard against possible transmission of the disease. This is contained in a statement made available by WHO to newsmen in Lagos on Saturday. It indicated that the sexual transmission of the Ebola Virus had yet to be established. WHO said, "The sexual transmission of the Ebola Virus from males to females is a strong possibility, but has not yet been proven; less probable, but theoretically possible. "Studies have shown that Ebola virus can be isolated from semen up to 82 days after symptom onset. "A recent case investigation identified genetic material (RNA) from the virus by nucleic acid amplification tests (such as RT-PCR) 199 days after symptom onset. "This is well beyond the period of virus detecting ability in the blood of survivors and long after recovery from illness. "The detection of virus genetic material many months after symptom onset is assumed to reflect the continuing, or at least very recent, presence of live and potentially transmissible Ebola virus." More surveillance data and research are needed on the risks of sexual transmission and particularly on the prevalence of viable and transmissible virus in semen over time, WHO said. WHO recommends that, in the interim, all Ebola survivors and their sexual partners should receive counselling. It added that this is to ensure safe sexual practices until their semen has twice tested negative; and survivors should be provided with condoms. "Ebola survivors and their sexual partners should either abstain from all types of sex or observe safe sex through correct and consistent condom use until their semen has twice tested negative. "Having tested negative, survivors can safely resume normal sexual practices without fear of Ebola virus transmission," the statement added. NAN |

At C.O.D United, it is ladies first Posted: 09 May 2015 03:37 AM PDT When the C.O.D United Ladies team was set up only two years ago, the goal was to ensure that the huge impact it had made with the men's team could also be made in female football. With a league that was floundering, structurally weak clubs and scant attention from fans, corporate Nigeria and even the game's administrators, female football was sorely lacking in direction and opportunities for truly talented young girls were extremely limited. Having recorded huge success with the men's team at academy and professional level, the management of the club decided to do something about it and so the C.O.D United Ladies, football team, also known as the amazons, was set up. Fast forward 2 years and the club has blazed a trail of glory that has now culminated in the club securing promotion to the top echelon of Nigeria female football, the Nigerian women's premier league, a laudable feat achieved with the club's customary adherence to its ethos of DIET; Discipline, Integrity, Excellence and Teamwork and the first by any team in the C.O.D United football structure. Their promotion is all the more remarkable when one remembers that they have now won back to back promotions in just two seasons of playing as a team. Speaking on the vision that has propelled the club so far in such a short time frame, the club's chief executive, Shola Opaleye said it is all down to the power of vision. "Like the male team and our academy, when we conceived the female team," he starts, "we were always intent on making an impact but in the right way. We were not just looking to make an impact in terms of winning, we were actually looking to make an impact in terms of structure and how we set up the team in such a way that results and success will only be a reflection of the quality of our work. That was why we hired someone like Anne Chiejene as our coach. Apart from her wealth of experience as a coach, we also considered the fact that she always carried and conducted herself in a professional manner." g Even more remarkable is the fact that the C.O.D United Ladies team is the first team in the C.O.D structure to gain promotion to the top division of the league system. They played 9 games in all, winning 6 of them and scoring 19 goals along the way, 10 of them by Vivian Ikechukwu whose exploits have earned her a call up to the National U-17 female team. Other players that shown like true stars were the left back, Patience Dike who also featured for the Nigerian U-17 team at the World Cup in Costa Rica earlier this year. Nkechi Agamz and Grace Marcus were also very vital players as the team conquered challenge after challenge on their way to promotion. Not content with winning promotion, the girls also won the Lagos State F.A Cup, defeating F.C Robo by three goals to one. and carting away all the individual prizes including MVP, best coach and best goalkeeper. The victory over FC Robo is even more satisfying because the C.O.D Ladies lost to the same team in last year's final. With the victory, C.O.D United also became the first club to win both the male and female Lagos State F.A Cup. It also strengthens C.O.D United's dominance of football in Lagos as one of its teams has played in the Lagos F.A Cup final in four out of the last five editions, something that makes Sola Aiyepeku, an Executive Director of the club very proud. "Lagos has a very competitive football space and to have our teams in 4 of the last 5 F.A Cup finals is no mean feat. There are many strong teams, male and female and as you know, the F.A Cup is the biggest competition there is in the state. Teams come into it with a strong determination to do well and we have to match and surpass that. It is something to be proud of. In the 4 finals we have made, we have won 2 and lost the 2 by very close margins and all have been against our closest rivals. What we want to do next is to hold both titles simultaneously and then go and have a real go at the Federations Cup. We know that our dominance is something other clubs will be eager to upturn so we will prepare even harder for next year. We look forward to the increased competition and we will be ready. For their efforts and their achievement of the promotion dream of C.O.D United Football Club, members of the ladies team were treated to a reception by the City of David Church, Victoria Island. Addressing the team, Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, C.O.D United's number one fan and a firm believer in the impact football can make on young people in the society advised the girls not to rest on their oars but to see their achievement as the start of another journey. "What you have achieved is remarkable and we are proud of you. We are happy that you have conducted yourself as good girls and represented our club with real dignity. Remember however that the real journey starts now. Achieving success is not the be all, end all. Sustaining it is the real test and I trust you to pass that test. I completely believe in you and I know you won't let us down. The hard work to stay at the top begins now." Anne Chiejiene, the chief coach of the team is also proud of her players and says it is the discipline that the girls have shown that thrills her the most. "I always tell my players that while talent is good, discipline is what will make them become successful and they are taking those lessons in. They listen to instructions and take advice. They work very hard and they are ambitious. They realize they have a big opportunity by playing for a club that wants them to become good footballers but more importantly, great women who can also function and contribute to society off the pitch. The support of the management has been unbelievable as well and I hope other club owners and administrators can learn from it. The women's game needs people who truly respect the girls and support them the way our management has done. I have been here and there and I see the difference in the level of support that we enjoy. It is a major difference and the girls see that and try to not fail them on the pitch. In all, I am just really happy to be part of something like this. I expect a few of these girls to go on and make a big impact in the women's game at the senior level. A few of them are already in the national teams and I am sure more will join. I have also told them that being called to the national team is a call to work harder and not relent. If your performances drop, you won't be invited again. I have shared my experiences with them and hopefully, they will continue to listen. With the support that we have, I believe this team can make an unforgettable impact in female football. I am very excited about the future." With so much success achieved on and off the pitch, it is perhaps apt to say that at C.O.D United, it is truly ladies first. |
Remember the 2 sisters I told y'all about yesterday? They are now in Kirikiri Posted: 09 May 2015 07:50 AM PDT Yesterday, I told y'all about two sisters who were charged to court for fighting a woman. Read here. Well, those sisters are now in Kirikiri and will be there until at least Monday. Their father wasn't able to meet their bail conditions yesterday, which included four sureties (plus himself) in person. He had the N40k bail money but not the sureties. Below is a full account of what happened – told by the sisters and their father and written by a family friend (the story below was not written by me). It's from a family friend and LIB reader who knows what's going on. Read below.. Chienyenwa was dozing on a chair owned by Mummy Ada. The owner of the chair, Mummy Ada, went to her and pulled the chair from under her and warned her never to sit on her chair again. Chienyenwa fell down and after getting up challenged the lady and asked her why she pulled the chair when she could have simply asked her to get up. Mummy Ada, incensed that Chienyenwa talked back at her, held her by the neck of her shirt and slapped her. Chienyenwa immediately retaliated and slapped her back and fight ensued. As written by a family friend of the sisters...

Photos: 8 year old boy found in suitcase at Spanish border Posted: 09 May 2015 02:44 AM PDT How can you risk your child's life this way? An 8-year-old boy from the Ivory Coast survived several hours locked in a suitcase, bundled in a fetal position, as his family tried to smuggle him into Spain. But they didn't succeed as police officers discovered him in the suitcase via scan on Thursday May 7 in El Tarajal, a terrestrial point of entry at Spain's border with Morocco. See more pics after the cut... The boy, who is now in Spanish custody, is believed to have spent many hours in the pink, medium-sized polyester suitcase, pressed against a few personal belongings.
The police spokesman said police officers in El Tarajal became suspicious when a 21-year-old woman, a Moroccan National, showed signs of nervousness as she attempted to cross the border wheeling the suitcase down the street.
Suspecting a drug smuggling case, police brought the suitcase in for an x-ray. That is when they found the boy. He was immediately taken to a state child custodian and awaits judicial process, the official said. A man who is apparently his father, identified as A.O., was arrested a few hours after the boy was found. The man, who has permanent residency in Spain, awaits formal charges. The spokesman said this is the first time they have found this type of smuggling, in which a child was locked into a container. Source: CNN |

Etcetera doesn't think Dangote can afford to buy Arsenal football club Posted: 09 May 2015 02:00 AM PDT Dangote is worth about $15.7 billion, Arsenal football club is worth about $2bn but singer turned writer Etcetera doesn't believe he can afford it. Read what he wrote below and tell us what you think
Think of Leeds United's tragicomic collapse; the balls-up at Cambridge United; Rotherham going into receivership in 2006 and 2008; Southampton's sorry saga. And, of course, Crawley Town getting a winding up order years back. So, what do we know? Don't buy a football club for the glory. So, before Dangote aspires to join Abrahamovic, Glazers and Al Mansours, he should make sure he knows his stuff. But does Dangote know how much these football clubs really cost? It is often mistaken that these clubs go for a quid. For instance, Swansea City was bought by investors for £100, and sold four years later for a £1. But beware: underneath those figures lies a pile of debt. Does Dangote have the cash, can he do an Abramovich? No, he can't. New UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations already in place, require clubs to balance their income and expenses. Dangote cannot operate under such rules. The premiership is too organised and transparent for any businessman to easily manipulate. The wage structure of footballers is too large for a businessman like Dangote to take on. Let us forget that those goons at Forbes have told us that Dangote is Africa's richest man. As it stands, he cannot afford the outright purchase of a big football club like Arsenal. It is as simple as that. He will go broke. It is a possibility if we are talking about a club in the coast of West Africa. Dangote has most of his wealth in shares and physical assets and the football business requires liquid cash to sustain. Have we all forgotten that the same Dangote got a 3G licence and sold it to Etisalat? He is a very smart businessman who knows how to pick his areas of investments. Can he get Bank backing? Unlikely! No serious private equity firm would get involved with a football club. They are not proper businesses. Too much politics, too many egos. And there's no proper exit route – the history of football clubs on the stock market is chequered, to say the least. They are rich men's toys, great for entertaining your mates, and that's about it. I don't think Dangote can afford such an expensive toy. A lot of people think it is relatively easy to make a million pounds by being the owner of a football club. That all you have to do is put in that first two million pounds. But these people should also know that since the English Premier League was formed in 1992, football finances have dried up to the extent that making a million pound profit is no longer a walk in the park. It is also the case that buying a football club is unlikely to yield that much of a return. Despite the significant TV and other commercial revenues, football clubs in England's top flight still struggle to break even. This is ironic, given the goal of setting up the Premier League was to stabilise club finances. Is Dangote putting his heart over his head? Yes I think so. Simon Jordan, in his autobiography, tells the story of how owning a football club can go terribly wrong. Jordan amassed a fortune of £75m in the early days of the mobile phone revolution. In 2000, he paid £10m to take control of South London football team Crystal Palace, becoming the youngest football club chairman at the age of 32. He was warned by many not to do it, but having watched the club since his childhood, he could not resist. Fast-forward 10 years and the club was in administration and Jordan's personal wealth largely wiped out. It is reported that Roman Abramovich, the Russian owner of Chelsea, has written off more than one billion pounds he ploughed into the club since acquiring it in 2003. Catching him up fast is Sheikh Mansour from Abu Dhabi, who has invested close to one billion pounds in Manchester City since 2008. Can Dangote write off such a huge amount of money? It is in fact the amount of money he borrows to invest in businesses. But again, I think Dangote is just trying to hype himself. Most of the serious money flowing into football recently has come from the Middle East. The Qatar Investment Authority (the country's sovereign wealth fund) bought the French Ligue 1 side Paris St Germain in 2011 and has gone about transforming them in the same way Sheikh Mansour has Manchester City. Forget those guys at Forbes, Dangote is not in the same league as these guys. The Glazer Family bought Manchester United in 2006, recognising the immense value of its global brand as a cash generator and the opportunities to enhance it even further. The cost of buying the club was loaded on to the club itself, with the revenues it generates used to pay the debt and interest that the Glazers undertook to buy the club. Eventually, the hope is that the club will essentially pay for itself leaving its American owners in possession of a multi-billion pound asset but till date, the Glazers are still gnashing their teeth and are still neck deep in debt. When it was speculated that a Middle East consortium was willing to pay £1.5bn for Arsenal Football Club, it was stated that Stan Kroenke, the American who owns about 63 per cent of the shares in the club, would have made just £400m on his shares. So, given the appalling financial returns, why do people buy football clubs? Who can buy Arsenal football club? Anyone can buy Arsenal football club, but that anyone doesn't include anyone who obtains bank loans to fund a business. Sir John Madejski, chairman of Reading Football Club, describes the ideal football club owner as having deep pockets, mercurial, and not faint-hearted. |

Woman finds out her Twins are born to different Dads after a DNA test Posted: 09 May 2015 12:20 AM PDT A woman in New Jersey only discovered that her twins have different fathers after she had DNA testing done to establish paternity when the children were 20 months old. Hence the man she took to court as the father of her twins has been told to pay child support to only one twin after a judge found those twins have two different fathers. The ruling came after a woman asked for child support for her twins. However, according to court documents, DNA testing determined the man originally cited as the children's father was actually only the biological father of one of them. Because of that, Passaic County Superior Court Judge Sohail Mohammed ruled in family court on May 4 that the unnamed defendant would have to pay child support for the twin he fathered, and he dismissed the unnamed mother's claim for support of the other child. Dr. Brooke Rossi, an obstetrician and gynecologist at University Hospitals McDonald's Women's Hospital in Cleveland, said while rare, having twins from different fathers can occur naturally. The phenomenon can occur when a woman produces two eggs during her fertility cycle instead of one, and they can become fertilized and implant within a few days of the same cycle. "The sperm live in the genital tract for two days," Rossi said. "It's possible a woman can have sex with a man on a Tuesday and have sex with a different man on Wednesday, and it is possible for [her] to get pregnant," with twins. The rare phenomenon is called heteropaternal superfecundation in medical literature. An estimated one in 13,000 paternity cases involves twins with different fathers, according to a 1997 medical journal cited in the court ruling. Rossi said because fertilization would happen so close together, the fetuses would be the same gestational age and would be expected to be born without any related health complications. In the New Jersey case, according to the court documents, the mother of the twins said in court she had sex with two different men around the time she conceived. However, she gave just one name in her petition for child support. While it's been a known phenomenon since the 1970s, according to court documents, there have been just two other reported legal cases of twins with different fathers in the U.S. |
