Your Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama,
President of the Republic of Ghana, and Chairman of the
Authority of Heads of State and Government;
Your Excellencies, Brother Heads of State and Government;
Your Excellency, the President of the ECOWAS Commission;
Honourable Ministers;
ECOWAS Commissioners
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen;

Mr. Chairman,

I must start this brief remarkby expressing my profound appreciation to you, the Government and People of Ghana for the warm reception accorded me and my delegation since our arrival here in Accra.  The traditionally warm hospitality that has been extended, inspires admiration of the brotherly people of Ghana.  It alsocertainly underscores the committed, forthright and exemplary leadership that you have personally offered our sub-region since assuming the Chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

2.    Similarly, may I also thank the President of the ECOWAS Commission for the earnest efforts that went into the convening ofthis 47th Ordinary Summit of ECOWAS.  It is no wonder that our Organisation continues to move from strength to strength in the face of both the strong leadership provided by our Chairman and the tireless work of theCommission under its President and staff.

3.    As we are all aware, this Summit coincides with the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of our Organisation.  I believe that this milestone calls for acknowledgement of the exceptional vision of the founding fathers which has inspired a united approach to addressing our common challenges. Unity of purpose and action has enabled us to buildour strength as we move forward to enhanced sub-regional cooperation and integration.  The significant progress we have made so far, can only be sustained and built upon through even closer consultations, collaboration and cohesion amongst us.

4.    With regard to our integration agenda, it must be said that we have achieved considerable progress.  We have gone beyond our Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and Goods, to the harmonisation of trade and our customs codes.  The achievement of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff and Trade Liberalisation Scheme, are vital sign posts in the Convergence Criteria required for our Common Currency regime.  In our resolve to further enhance trade and facilitate transportation, work is in progress on the construction of the Lagos-Abidjan Highway which will be complemented by the implementation of the Joint Border Posts Reconstruction Projects across our borders.  In the last few months, for instance, President Boni Yayi and I were able to lay the foundation stone of the Joint Border Post between our two countries at Seme border.

5.    My country, Nigeria, remains fully committed to the goal of an integrated and single West African community of nations and people.  We have, therefore, spared no efforts in ensuring the early detection of conflict and in taking necessary measures for its elimination in our sub-region.  We do so on the strong conviction that without peace, there will be no development; and that our peoples cannot be weaned out of poverty and deprivation without development.

6.    I have profound satisfaction and pride, especially when I see the remarkable progress that we have achieved together for our sub-region.  Our exertions in the quest for solutions to the political and security challenges that occasionally threaten the peace and stability of our nations is the hallmark of our common resolve to achieve our integration agenda.   Indeed, our outstanding record on this score remains a model for all of Africa's other sub-regional Organisations.

7.    I recall that as Acting President, I became the Chairman of ECOWAS in 2010.  This was a unique honour from my colleagues for which I remain grateful.  The first challenge that we confronted was the situation in Niger.  Happily, through dogged efforts on our part, we were able to resolve it and the country returned to democratic rule.  General Salou Djibo who oversaw the return to constitutional rule in Niger is today a student at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria.

8.    In Cote D'Ivore, ECOWAS followed through in its commitment to enduring democracy by standing firm behind the winner of the Presidential elections in 2010.  We are pleased that our brother, President Alassane Ouattara took his rightful place and went on not only to provide leadership to his country, but also as Chairman of ECOWAS.

9.    Similarly, in both Guinea and Guinea Bissau, we remained focused on the goal of ensuring that viable political solutions were found for the political and security challenges that they were experiencing.  That peace and stability and democratic governance have returned to these brotherly countries underscore our commitment to finding viable solutions to the problems of our Sub-region.
10.  As Co-mediator, I visited Mali and met with all the stakeholders in early and difficult time of the crisis in the effort towards return to democratic rule, maintenance of peace and articulation of a viable political process.  Nigeria participated in all the negotiations and meetings coordinated by ECOWAS at various venues that eventually produced a political timetable for the holding of democratic elections in Mali.  Therefore, let me take this opportunity to felicitate with our brother, President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, the Government and people of Mali for the historic Peace and Reconciliation Agreement signed in Bamako on 15thMay, 2015, by all parties. It is our hope that this Accord will signal the end of the Malian crisis.

11.  With respect to the situation in Burkina Faso, fully aware of the serious consequence for stability in the region, our Chairman, President Mahama, President Sall and myself paid a consultative visit to Burkina Faso to engage on a plan of action to return the country to constitutionality.  This initial engagement was subsequently followed-up by necessary ECOWAS mechanisms which assisted in calming the then tense political situation.  I, therefore, urge that the stakeholders stay firm on the political roadmap that has been agreed by all parties.

12.  Your Excellencies, the consolidation of democracy, the elevation of the rule of law and the deepening culture of good governance across our sub-region today, is the product of our solidarity and the growing effectiveness and integrity of the institutions and mechanisms that we have put in place. The elections in Ghana and Senegal were largely peaceful on their own without controversy and indicate a maturation of democracy in our sub-region.  Equally, in Benin, Sierra Leone and now in Togo, we have made tremendous progress in consolidating democracy in our sub-region.

13.  Permit me therefore to congratulate my brother, His Excellency, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, on his recent re-election as President of the Republic of Togo.  The successful conduct of that election devoid of violence and held in a free, fair and credible manner further confirms that democracy has indeed come to stay in our sub-region.  We look forward to the same happy and tranquil outcome in all the member states where elections will also take place later in the year and subsequently.

14.  Your Excellencies, while we are making real progress in many core areas, there are issues that require our attention.  In the past few years, we have witnessed a growing wave of young men and women from our sub-region undertaking very perilous journeys across the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.  The phenomenon, given its hazardous nature, has claimed many lives and assumed humanitarian crisis.  ECOWAS in the first instance, should earnestly address this problem.  I also urge that this matter be tabled at the forthcoming 24thSummit of the African Union in June in South Africa.  At the level of member states, we should take necessary action to address the root causes of the crisis

15.  Occasionally, our decision-making mechanisms which should, naturally, inform our consensual positions on matters that touch on our collective and sub-regional interests is not always upheld.  Occasionally, our solidarity seems to face severe tests in the face of individual discretions on critical issues.  I recall here our disparate positions and actions at crucial moments on the crisis in Cote d'Ivoire in 2011, and also, the choice of a candidate for the post of President of the African Union in 2012.

16.  Again, at our last Session in Abuja, it was resolved, after due deliberations, that ECOWAS should adopt a single candidate for the post of President of the African Development Bank (AfDB). Today, we have no less than four candidates from our sub-region alone vying for the post as against four candidates representing the other four regions of the continent.  Our experience with the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), with the European Union (EU) is yet another example.

17.  This recurring disposition elicits negative signals from our partners and other regions of the continent.  It goes against the grain of the solidarity we all too often, display in dealing with other challenges. Wemust rise above it in the larger interest of our sub-region.

18.  Your Excellencies, as you are no doubt aware, this is the last Summit that I will be attending as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.  In 10 days time, precisely on the 29th of this month, my successor, President-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, will assume the mantle of leadership of my country. I feel deeply satisfied that the tree of democracy planted in my country and in our sub-region, has taken roots and is blossoming. I have, no doubt whatsoever, that under the watchful guidance and nurturing ofYour Excellencies, that tree willcontinue to bear abundant fruits.

19.    Let me, therefore, seize the opportunity to express my profound appreciation for the understanding and cooperation that you accorded me all these years, especially during my tenure as the Chairman of our Organisation between 2010-2012. The personal rapport and chemistry that I have enjoyed with each one of you, my brother and sister Presidents greatly facilitated the decisions that we were able to take and the concrete measures we took on behalf of our sub-region.  As the new Administration takes over, I am confident that the bonds of friendship between Nigeria and each member state of our cherished Organisation and Nigeria's role within ECOWAS, will grow even stronger. I urge you all to extend the same friendship and fraternal cooperation that I have received from you to my successor.

20.  Once again, Your Excellencies, I thank you for your friendship and the unalloyed support.  I wish you well as you steer the affairs of our sub-region. The future of our Organisation and West Africa is in good, safe and capable hands. I shall, even out of office, continue to give my modest support to our noble cause of unity, peace, stability and development of our sub-region.

21.  I thank you.

Wife of NFL player Lawrence Okoye sues her former employers for racial abuse and sexual harrasment

Posted: 19 May 2015 01:30 PM PDT

27 year old British citizen, Phillipa Okoye who is married to Lawrence Okoye, a British Olympic discus thrower and defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers is suing the investment firm she worked for, deVere Group for being demoted and then fired from her job as a senior investment adviser after she complained about the  racist and sexual harassment at the firm.

Mrs Okoye alleges that one co-worker told her: 'I think it's disgusting when white women go out with black guys.

She said one time, her boss asked her "How many cheerleaders has your boyfriend f–ked today?" He's probably f–ked the whole cheerleading squad by now.''
Philippa says she was the only woman in the Midtown office when she was hired as a senior investment adviser in October 2013.

Surrounded by about 21 male co-workers, she was exposed to sexist antics the first day, she said.

"So can you handle the banter or are you going to be a woman about it and be sensitive?'' An executive at the firm Benjamin Alderson snipped, she said.

In her lawsuit, Phillipa said when she was still engaged to Lawrence, another co worker said, "Don't change your surname to Okoye if you marry Lawrence, because people will think you're black,'' she said.

"Yeah, and that's not good for business,'' Alders allegedly added.

When other women visited, the men would rate whether they were worth "f–king,'' Philippa said.
Philippa said that when she complained to Alderson, he seethed, "This is why I didn't want women in the office.''

Philippa says she was demoted and fired. She is suing for damages.
"While the suit can't repair the emotional distress our client had and continues to experience, the employer must be held accountable for their unlawful actions," said her lawyer, Kenneth Katz.

The taunts didn't stop at racism, either, Mrs Okoye says. She alleges that Alderson, a senior area manager for deVere, openly made it known that he wanted to pattern his office after 'Wolf of Wall Street' and 'Boiler Room.

DeVere Group are denying the charges, calling Mrs Okoye a disgruntled ex-employee who was fired for legitimate reasons.
'These false and incredulous allegations made by a disgruntled former employee are vigorously and categorically denied,' the company said in a statement.
'We are shocked and dismayed that a legitimate employment termination has sparked such a malicious response.'

Photos: Yemi Alade discovers her twin at Awka show

Singer Yemi Alade played a stunning stage trick on her fans at last weekend's Awka leg of Star Music Trek when a stunt double was introduced as her before she made her entry to the stage. Dressed in an African print hood jacket over a black tube and jeans with sandals and a pair of dark shades, the stunt double waltzed into stage with two dancers. The crowd cheered her on, unaware that the real Yemi Alade was still backstage.

When she finally emerged dressed in a short flair dress and rocking blue wool braid, the audience screamed in shock and excitement. She jokingly questioned her stunt double on the striking semblance and then the real fun began - hit song after the other, from 'Tangerine' to ' Kissing', then her current hit song 'Taking Over You', which worked the crowd into a frenzy.

Heartbreaking pics capture moment teen bride was forced to marry a polygamous police chief after 'he threatened her with kidnap'

Posted: 19 May 2015 12:52 PM PDT

Isn't this the saddest bride you have ever seen? The 17 year old was forced to marry a 47 year old Chechen warlord who is married and has children older than her after he threatened her with kidnap. Read the sad story below from Mail Online
Her resplendent white dress says it's her wedding day, but the sadness etched on her face does not. For this teenage bride has been forced to marry an ally of Chechen warlord Ramzan Kadyrov after apparently being threatened with kidnap if she did not comply. Kheda Goilabiyeva, 17, looked despondent and at one point wept during the ceremony in the Chechen capital Grozny as the fearsome Kadyrov watched on from the crowd.
She was asked three times whether she wanted to marry 47-year-old police chief Nazhud Guchigov – who already has another wife – before finally and reluctantly responding yes.

The marriage has provoked outrage in Russia, fuelled by Moscow's child rights commissioner, Pavel Astakhov, who defended the wedding by saying that Caucasian women 'are all shrivelled with wrinkles by the age of 27'. He later apologised for his comments.
In response to the remarks, young women online have started posting selfies on Instagram with the hashtag #WrinkledWoman in which they scrunch up their faces to simulate the appearance of wrinkles. Many of the posts include sarcastic greetings to Astakhov.

Kadyrov, who has ruled Chechnya with an iron fist since being installed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2007, was said to have given his personal blessing for the marriage in apparent violation of Russian laws against polygamy.
The procession then carried on to a restaurant, where Kadyrov was present and celebrated with traditional dances.
Guchigov reportedly threatened to kidnap the teen and warned of 'unpleasant consequences' if she or her parents did not consent to marriage, according to Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta.
Several of those in attendance also said that they disapproved, owing to the difference in age between the two.

'I would have killed my daughter before letting her marry like that,' one woman said on condition of anonymity. 'I am against early marriages.'
Announced in late April, the wedding led to an outcry in Russia, with several news reports alleging that the teenager had been forced into the marriage.
Kremlin human rights commissioner Ella Pamfilova had denounced the marriage as medieval and said she hoped that it would not take place. She called for sanctions if it were carried out.

Kadyrov however said on his Instagram account that 'these publications are only lies! Love has no age'.
Russia's child rights commissioner, Pavel Astakhov, said that the wedding did not violate laws on the minimum age for marriage, but he has not responded to questions regarding polygamy.
Kadyrov, 38, has helped the Kremlin battle an Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus.
But the former rebel – accused by human rights groups of overseeing torture, extrajudicial executions and corruption – has shown an increased readiness in recent months to challenge Putin's authority.

$20million needed to resettle displaced persons - Borno Govt

Posted: 19 May 2015 12:53 PM PDT

Borno state government says it needs $20million to resettle all her indigenes who fled the state during attacks by Boko Haram. The deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Zanna Mustapha said this while speaking to a delegation of Red Cross International led by the President of Red Cross today.
"We, the government and good people of Borno State, want to use this opportunity to thank you (Red Cross), NEMA and other donor agencies for supporting us in this our trying moment. Twenty-two out of the 27 local government areas were destroyed, over million IDPs are living in Maiduguri, the state capital alone.
Just yesterday, we received another batches of 4,500 IDPs from Geidam, who were sent away by the government of Niger Republic and more are still on their way to Maiduguri. Borno State needs over 20 million dollars to resettle its people that were displaced as most houses, business centres and places of worship were all destroyed by the insurgents. Though, the military has liberated 97 per cent of the communities taken over by insurgents in Borno, it will take time for the government to fumigate and diffuse the landmines before they are relocated to their various communities."he said

Nigerian who fled to Australia & became a successful model jailed after police lured him to London with fake photoshoot

Posted: 19 May 2015 10:27 AM PDT

30 year old Nigerian successful model Ben Fiberesima, skipped bail in the UK, fled to Australia where he lived for seven years under a false name, modeled for Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, boasted of jet set lifestyle, wrote a self-help book, called himself a millionaire, claimed he was in the Great Gatsby and bragged about being an 11-time underground rap battle champion. The fugitive was arrested after police lured him to a fake swimwear photoshoot in London. Read full story after the cut

From UK Evening Standard
A gangster who launched a successful career as a male model and musician while on the run in Australia has been snared in an extraordinary police sting.
Fugitive Ben Fiberesima, 30, appeared in campaigns by fashion designers such as Tom Ford after skipping bail while facing trial on fraud and weapons charges in London seven years ago. He also performed as a critically-acclaimed rap artist under the name Roky Million, releasing singles and videos downloaded by tens of thousands of fans.
The gang member from South Kilburn was picked as one of the first people to trial the "Google Glass" for a style magazine, and in a self-help book published last year claimed he was "worth seven figures by the age of 26".
His jetset lifestyle - which he claimed also included hanging out with supermodels and stars of Aussie soap Home and Away - ended when Met detectives swooped last year using an elaborate sting to detain him.

Officers from Brent's Wanted Offenders Unit received an anonymous tip-off that Fiberesima was back in London in August living under a false name but were unable to locate him.

Then detectives discovered he was on the books of a respected models agency based in Covent Garden.

An officer contacted the agency claiming to represent the fake company WOU Photography and booked Fiberesima for a casting call to model a range of luxury swimwear.
When he arrived for what he thought was his next assignment at the studio in Kentish Town, Fiberesima was arrested at the door.

Fiberesima was jailed for three years and nine months after being found guilty of two counts of theft, two counts of making false representation and possessing an offensive weapon at Harrow Crown Court earlier this month.

He also pleaded guilty to three counts of making false representation and one count of possessing a prohibited weapon.

Fiberesima was originally arrested in September 2008 after calling police claiming someone was attempting to enter his flat in Christchurch Avenue, Brondesbury, north-west London.
When officers arrived, there was no intruder but they did find a stun gun, a can of CS gas and stolen chequebooks belonging to a neighbour.

He was arrested and charged with fraud, theft and possession of an offensive weapon
The gang member from the South Kilburn estate was granted bail but failed to appear at court and was subsequently discovered to have fled the country.

Fiberesima's Established Models biography claims: "Raised in London Roky used his talent for rhyming to be crowned UK Underground rap battle champion 11 times. He has travelled extensively modelling for international brands including Calvin Klein, Nike, Tom Ford and YSL."

It also states that "Roky appeared in Baz Luhrman's film, The Great Gatsby" although the Standard was unable to find his name in the film's credits.
During his time on the run, Fiberesima published a self-help book called Roky's Power Gain 50 – Rules To Live By To Gain Power, Money and Influence.

He said he had gone from "working class to millionaire in 15 months", writing: "I grew up in government housing and have been for 80 per cent of my life. I am now worth seven figures at age 26. I used my in depth knowledge of power to change my fortunes."
The last message on his Twitter feed, posted in December last year, said: "To all: Roky's in the 5% of rappers that can genuinely be described as 'real' so as is life he'll be away til further notice #management."

In one interview for an online fashion magazine Fiberesima talks of how he started travelling the world at the age of 23 and visited countries including France, Belgium, Spain and Australia while he modelled for designers including Calvin Klein, Tom Ford and Yves Saint Laurent.
He declares : "I have had ups and downs, trials and tribulations, like everyone else" and said in his youth he mixed with gang members but had since changed his life.
He added: " I keep it as honest as I can."

Detective Inspector Pete Wallis of Brent CID said: "There is clear message here, that we will not forget you if you offend, and we will explore all options in tracing you and bringing you to justice.
"Mr Fiberesima used false identities to evade capture for five years and developed a very public persona in Australia and internationally as a rap artist and model.

"Thankfully he is now paying for his crimes, due to the perseverance of Brent's Wanted Offenders Unit."
A spokesman for Established Models said he had been on their books as Mr Million for a few months two years ago. He said : "He was not working, so we let him go. "
