"There will be a decent improvement in the power situation from this weekend, thanks to ongoing remedial efforts that will double the current power supply to 4,000WM. Getting back to the 5,074MW all-time high that was reached earlier will take a few more weeks". |

| Photos: Nigerian drug dealer arrested in Pattaya, Thailand after leading police on a car chase. Posted: 11 Mar 2016 12:59 PM PST  According to Pol.Lt.Col.Chitdecha Songhong- deputy superintendent of Na Jomtien police station, a sting operation was set up in order to apprehend him after the authorities learned of his activities. The police officers had oreviously arrested a local drug agent who claimed that he bought the drug from Chinedu. Later the police officers planned to buy the drug from Chinedu in front of a McDonalds shop. The police's spy met Chinedu who was accompanied by his Thai wife. However, Chinedu realized that he was tricked and attempted to escape with his car and crashed into two villagers injuring them. The police officers chased him until they finally arrested him in Soi Sukhumvit 46 road. His Thai wife fled away with packs of drug. During interrogation, Chinedu confessed that he and his Thai wife have dealt with drug for a long time. Investigation is ongoing and if found guilty, he will be prosecuted according to Thai law. |
| Appeal Court upholds Ibinabo Fiberesima's five year jail term Posted: 11 Mar 2016 12:27 PM PST  The case went to court and the Igbosere magistrate court sentenced her to five years in prison with an option of N100k fine. Ibinabo apologized to the man's family, paid the N100k fine and thought the case was over but the Lagos state government objected to the fine and took the case to a high court... The High Court then said that the Magistrate court was reckless when they gave Ibinabo an option of fine for such an offence. The High court judge tossed out the N100k option and sentenced Ibinabo to five years in prison, saying that such an offence - reckless and dangerous driving which causes another person's death is liable to 7 years in prison. Ibinabo's N100k was subsequently given back to her. So she and her lawyers took the case to court of Appeal, asking the court of appeal, Lagos Division, to set aside the prison sentence and restore the sentence she received from the magistrate court (N100k) but unfortunately, at the judgement that took place today March 11th, the court upheld the high court ruling and dismissed Ibinabo's appeal, saying it lacked merit. Ibinabo was in court today and reportedly wept when judgment was passed. She and her lawyers are now heading to the Supreme court to appeal. If they fail at the Supreme Court, the AGN president will be spending the next few years in prison. |
| UK Police issue statement over officer hitting Nigerian man with baton at London train station Posted: 11 Mar 2016 11:10 AM PST  We have been made aware of a video on Facebook showing BTP officers detaining a man at St Pancras station on Tuesday, March 8. Officers attended the station following reports from staff of fare evasion, and a man, aged 40 and from Thamesmead, London was subsequently arrested on suspicion of fare evasion and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).The man has since been released on bail. | Photos: Giant rat bigger than a child found in Hackney, London Posted: 11 Mar 2016 10:37 AM PST  The giant mutant rat, claimed to weigh upwards of 25lbs, was spotted lying dead in a bush next to a popular children's playground.The rodent was discovered near where children play which backed onto a railway track near Hackney Downs, north London, on Thursday. Tony snapped a picture of the rat being held by electrician friend James Green, 46, to the glee and disgust of his friends.He said the rat was the same length as a four-year-old boy. In the picture, Tony is holding the rat close to the camera, making it hard to gauge how big it really is, but he insists it was 4ft long. "We were going to stick it in the bin, but before we did we thought we better take a picture of people won't believe it's real." He said  Tony explained that the estate where he was working has an infestation of rats, so there is poison left around to catch the enormous creatures. He said: "The bins get left open nearby so these little fellas have a pretty good diet."Source - MirrorUk |
| Collapsed building; court orders Lekki Gardens MD, contractor to be remanded for 30 days Posted: 11 Mar 2016 10:33 AM PST  The court also ordered one of the contractors handling the project, Odofin Taiwo Henry to be kept in police custody at Panti alongside Nyong for the next 30 days. Magistrate Folashade Botoku, who granted the remand order, held that same was in the interest of justice and public safety. 34-year-old Nyong was apprehended on Thursday, while Odofin was arrested on Wednesday. The building had crumbled around 3am on Tuesday with several workers trapped in the rubble. The state government had sealed the building, which was originally designed to be a three-storey structure but in a brazen act of defiance and impunity, the owners of the building, Messrs Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited, the promoters of Lekki Gardens, were said to have criminally unsealed the property and continued building beyond the approved floors until the unfortunate incident. Nyong and Odofin were brought to court at about 1pm in a black Range Rover Sports Utility Vehicle with registration number (Abuja) KWL 682 CN. When the case was called, police prosecutor, Godwin Osuji informed Magistrate Botoku of an ex-parte application seeking to remand the defendants beyond the constitutionally prescribed period, saying the application was brought in the interest of justice, public safety, public order and morality. He said in view of the circumstances of the case, it was impossible for the police to conclude the investigation within two days, hence the need for the application. According to Osuji, as at Thursday, 24 bodies were recovered from the scene of the incident, while others were still being recovered. He added that some of the relatives of the victims were still making efforts to identify their dead bodies, while autopsy is yet to be conducted. He said: "In view of the circumstances of this matter, it will be impracticable for us to conclude investigation in two days as there are so many agencies involved and so we have come to court in order not to run foul of the law." He, therefore, urged the court to grant the request to keep the defendants in custody of the Police Criminal Investigation Department pending conclusion of investigation. Responding, counsel to the defendants, Bode Olanipekun orally applied for the bail of his clients. Olanipekun, in the alternative, urged the court to order that the police should release his clients but that they should make themselves available to police when needed. However, Osuji, in response, said it was trite law that an application for bail could only be filed after the defendants must have been arraigned on a criminal charge. He said at the moment, the police was yet to file any charge against the defendants and as such the application for bail was not yet ripe. In her ruling, Magistrate Botoku ruled that under Section 264 (1) of the Lagos State Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2011, she was empowered to order the remand of a defendant as in the instant case, but that the major consideration is the justification of such application. She held that having gone through the facts of the case, it was in the interest of justice for the application to be granted, as there was merit in it. Magistrate Botoku therefore ordered the defendants to be kept at the Criminal Investigation Department Panti for 30 days at first instance, subject to variation upon further applications. "If you really reflect on the problems of this country, it seems to turn common sense on its head. You sometimes wonder if anyone needs to tell any group of people that if you are a poor country, you do not need 36 governors, 36 deputy governors, with members of house of assembly, commissioners and advisers, Special assistants, a president, a vice president, 36 ministers, special advisers, federal legislature and so on.
