Photo: 19 year old Secondary School Leaver sentenced to 37 Years in prison for duping an American of $40m

Posted: 16 Mar 2016 01:06 PM PDT

Justice Lateef Lawal Akapo of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja today convicted 19-year old secondary school leaver, Tobechukwu Igbokwe and sentenced him to 37 years imprisonment for defrauding an American, thr sum of $40million in an inheritance scam.

Tobechukwu was arraigned before the court on a 12- count charge bordering on forgery, conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences.

Justice Akapo found him guilty on all 12-counts and sentenced him accordingly. He was sentenced to 7 years on counts 1-8; 8years on count 9; 7years on count 10, 8years on count 11 and 7 years on count 12, making a cumulative of 37years imprisonment.

The sentence is to run concurrently with effect from October 28, 2013.

The court also ordered Tobechukwu to return the $40million as a restitution to the victim and forfeit a Toyota Corolla car, which is a proceed of the crime, to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Tobechukwu was arraigned on Monday, October 28, 2013 and pleaded not guilty to the 12-count charges pressed against him. He later changed his plea to "guilty" and was convicted by Justice Akapo accordingly.

Before the conviction, the prosecuting counsel, Kayode Oni tendered various exhibits before the court which were all admitted and marked as such. However, defence counsel, D. A. Omougbai prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, since Igbokwe has shown enough remorse for the offences he committed. Tobechukwu Igbokwe (Alias David Prince) and his accomplice, Ifeanyi Obi were alleged to have duped an American: M. Silva, the sum of $40million in an inheritance scam.

Silva was made to believe that Igbokwe and his accomplice had a huge inheritance which they wanted to move to a foreign account for safe-keeping. The victim was asked to send money to "process" the transfer and in the process, he wired $40m in several installments through Western Union to Igbokwe. Igbokwe also confessed that he had duped other foreigners. Some of them are: T. Bedwell, $6,000 and R. Hunt $15,000.

Photos: North Korea sentences US student to 15 years in prison with hard labour for stealing propanganda material

Posted: 16 Mar 2016 01:04 PM PDT

North Korea today, March 16 sentenced an American student, Otto Warmbier, to 15 years of hard labor for crimes against the state. The sentence was handed down by North Korea's Supreme Court.

Warmbier, a 21-year-old University of Virginia student, was detained in January for trying to steal an item bearing a political slogan from his hotel in the capital Pyongyang.

Warmbier, who is from the city of Wyoming in Ohio, said that his crime "is very severe and pre-planned."

"I entirely beg you and the government of DPRK for your forgiveness," a tearful Warmbier said at a press conference in February. "Please, I've made the worst mistake of my life. But please act to save me."

Warmbier was arrested on January 2 after he was detained by immigration officials. Warmbier was returning to China after wrapping up a five-day tour to DPRK along with other tourists, according to the tour operator that arranged the trip.

There was no immediate confirmation by North Korean state media of the sentence which appeared to come just hours after veteran US diplomat Bill Richardson reportedly met with two diplomats from North Korea's UN office to press for Warmbier's release.

Graphic pics: Nigerian beauty queen in the UK, escapes death after horrible allegic reaction to eyedrops

Posted: 16 Mar 2016 12:56 PM PDT

Maria Adejokun, who was the second runner up at the Miss Teen Africa UK contest 6 years ago, has narrated the ordeal she passed through five years ago after she tried using an eye drop prescribed by a doctor in the UK for her itchy eyes. In an interview with UK Daily Mail, Maria who has undergone several surgeries to correct the skin deformity she suffered, said the next morning after she used the eye drops, she woke up with lumps all over her body. See more photos after the cut...

As her condition began to deteriorate she was rushed to hospital. Her skin began to shed and she was put into a medically induced coma.
'Unknown to me, I had a rare, deadly allergy to eye drops which caused by skin to peel off from head to toe. When I was in the intensive care unit, crying in pain, all I thought of was coming home.'
Her mother, Remi Adejokun, said the severe reaction left her daughter in such a terrible state she 'looked like Freddy Krueger' from the horror film Nightmare on Elm Street.
'I hate to say that, but there were so many blisters - her skin was just tearing off and her lips were very swollen. I looked at her and I was so scared she was going to burst open. I saw death knocking at my daughter's door, all because of eye drops. I was crazy, beyond the worried stage and near to losing my mind. After a week I thought there was no hope - but then as she lay on the bed, unable to talk, I said "Marian, you've just made it to university, that's your dream" and she moved her toe. Realising she could hear me I started to sing our favourite songs to her.
Instead of crying all the time I went to the intensive care unit and danced.' Maria lost so must skin she had to be wrapped in a foil sheet and still has to be fed through a hole in her throat. 'Everywhere was swollen. My nose was huge and my eyes were so red you could take a spoon and scrape out the blood.'she said

Specialist skin experts who examined her had told her mother that she will not be able to survive the reaction but miraculously, Maria pulled through. Today, she says the terrible experience has made her stronger.
'When I was in the intensive care unit, crying in pain, all I thought of was coming home. I've overcome a lot of in my life. Losing my skin because of an eye drop is just another obstacle I've made it through. I am so happy to be alive and share my unique story. No matter what the struggles are, you have to believe in yourself - and have a positive attitude towards life"she said
Maria has since gone on to complete a degree in early childhood studies at the University of Roehampton and has written two books, My Life Is Not My Own and ReachOut2All.

Posted: 16 Mar 2016 09:57 AM PDT

Deputy Governor of Kaduna state, Barnabas Bala, today met with the leaders of Kaduna State CAN, led by the chairman George Dodo, Catholic Bishop of Zaria to discuss the controversial Religious Regulation Bill which the state governor Nasir El Rufai has sent to the state House of Assembly for debate and passage.

According to the Deputy Governor, the Religious Preaching Law is proposed to curb extremism & protect safe practice of faith. He said this is the first time the preaching bill is being subjected to democratic scrutiny since it was enacted in 1984.

The 1984 and 1987 versions of the edict were enacted following outbreaks of religious violence which Kaduna wishes to confine to the past. "There is nothing in the Bill that suggests any effort to abolish, stop or derogate on the freedom of religion and religious beliefs. It merely seeks to ensure that religious preaching and activities in the State are conducted in ways that do not threaten public order, public safety, and to protect the rights and freedom of other persons."he said

Leader of the CAN group, Bishop Dodo said CAN welcomeD the consultations, and would be making a comprehensive submission to the House of Assembly and the Executive. The Deputy Governor said the consultations continue & that the legislative process of public hearings also offer a platform for all views.

Buhari reacts to this morning's suicide attack in Maidugui, describes Boko Haram as a godless group

Posted: 16 Mar 2016 09:47 AM PDT

President Buhari has described Boko Haram group as one that is godless. Buhari said this while reacting to the suicide attack at a praying ground in Maiduguri this morning. Over 20 deaths have been recorded while many others were seriously injured. He advised Nigerians to be very vigilante and not let down their guards

"I am dismayed by the news of a bomb attack on innocent worshippers in a mosque in Maiduguri this morning. This attack is yet another sign that Boko Haram is a mindless and godless group that in no way represents true Islam. I sympathize with all who lost family and loved ones in the attack, and with the government and people of Borno State. Nigerians should please not let down their guard. Vigilance should continue to be a priority, especially in public places. The government remains resolute in its commitment to securing Nigeria from terrorism and violence."he said

Jamb CBT: A Look at Then and Now

Posted: 16 Mar 2016 09:46 AM PDT

The Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) went a step higher in 2013 with the Computer Based Test (CBT). For most of us, this was a necessary and timely innovation on their part. Most Nigerians are either giving a bow or a round of applause to the JAMB team.

THEN

In the 90's, when students sat for JAMB, it was a whole different ball game from now. The examination was kept on a pedestal of FEAR for most students. As opposed to recent times, most people wrote JAMB a minimum of twice, before they could ever think of gaining admissions.
As a result, exam malpractice became a common denominator in the JAMB examinations. It seemed that no matter the angle approached to tackle this scourge, it just would not go away.  Parents were a major part of the growth and immortality of exam malpractice at this time.
For a good number of students also, there was a feeling that their papers were not being handled fairly. There was a belief that the results were "given" by those who marked instead of really being what they "got" in the examination.
There was also the issue of not finding your result when the results were released, or, exam centre results being ceased. This caused problems for even the innocent ones in those centres.
The step that JAMB took in 2013 has really changed everything. When we heard about this new decision, there was a mix of both anticipation and skepticism (good and bad): Can this really work? Finally, JAMB will be free and fair! Hmm, will Nigerians not find a way around it? Will my children be able to pass their exam now? Can we still cheat?

NOW

There is a renewed confidence in the students writing the exams. The confidence stems from the belief that, machines are better than people. The knowledge that at least two days later you haveyour result is also a great motivation and sense of relief to students now.
It now encourages young people to read as opposed to waiting to "sort" (give bribes or pay mercenaries). On account of the CBT, the students need a general knowledge of basic computer skills, which in turn, adds value to each student in the long run.
New things are not always easy to accept, but all parents and guardians should embrace and wholeheartedly support this move, knowing that your children and wards would be better off in the long run.
On a lighter note: I wish I was writing JAMB now.

 Question

In the early 2000's universities started conducting their own tests after students passed JAMB and "gained admission" into their institutions. For most of us, the reasons seemed obvious with the plague of malpractice at the time.
Now that there is the CBT is there still a need for that post UTME? Can't the universities work with JAMB to settle the needs they believe JAMB was not meeting (if any)?

Good news for women trying to conceive but failing every month..

Posted: 16 Mar 2016 09:24 AM PDT

Infertility means not being able to get pregnant after one year of trying (or six months if a woman is 35 or older). Women who can get pregnant but are unable to stay pregnant may also be referred to as infertile. If you're you struggling to get pregnant, frustrated or feeling angry for not being able to conceive despite all your efforts... Then you need to Read this post - http://fertilityenhanced.com

Are you having any of the following problems?
-- Irregular Menstrual Cycles
-- Delayed Periods
-- Endometriosis
-- Ovarian Cyst
-- Miscarriages
-- High Prolactin
-- Hormonal Imbalances
-- Low Sexual Drive
Then, ensure you read this post carefully.

Pregnancy is the result of a process that has many steps and the steps are as follows;
  • A woman's body must release an egg from one of her ovaries (ovulation).
  • The egg must go through a fallopian tube toward the uterus (womb).
  • A man's sperm must join with (fertilize) the egg along the way.
  • The fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation).

Is infertility just a woman's problem?
No, infertility is not always a woman's problem. Both women and men can have problems that cause infertility. About one-third of infertility cases are caused by women's problems. Another one third of fertility problems are due to the man. The other cases are caused by a mixture of male and female problems or by unknown problems.

Infertility in men is most often caused by:
  • A problem called varicocele. This happens when the veins on a man's testicle(s) are too large. This heats the testicles. The heat can affect the number or shape of the sperm.
  • Other factors that cause a man to make too few sperm or none at all.
  • Movement of the sperm. This may be caused by the shape of the sperm. Sometimes injuries or other damage to the reproductive system block the sperm.

What Increases a Man's Risk of Infertility?
A man's sperm can be changed by his overall health and lifestyle. Some things that may reduce the health or number of sperm include:
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Drugs
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Environmental toxins, including pesticides and lead
  • Health problems such as mumps, serious conditions like kidney disease, or hormone problems
  • Medicines
  • Radiation treatment and chemotherapy for cancer

Most cases of female infertility are caused by problems with ovulation. Without ovulation, there are no eggs to be fertilized. Some signs that a woman is not ovulating normally include irregular or absent menstrual periods.

Ovulation problems are often caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a hormone imbalance problem which can interfere with normal ovulation. PCOS is the most common cause of female infertility. Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is another cause of ovulation problems. POI occurs when a woman's ovaries stop working normally before she is 40. POI is not the same as early menopause.

Less common causes of fertility problems in women include:
  • Blocked fallopian tubes due to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or surgery for an ectopic pregnancy
  • Physical problems with the uterus
  • Uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous clumps of tissue and muscle on the walls of the uterus.

What Things Increase a Woman's Risk of Infertility?
Many things can change a woman's ability to have a baby. These include:
  • Age
  • Smoking
  • Excess alcohol use
  • Stress
  • Poor diet
  • Being overweight or underweight
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Health problems that cause hormonal changes, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome and primary ovarian insufficiency

Some health problems also increase the risk of infertility. So, women should talk to their doctors if they have:
  • Irregular periods or no menstrual periods
  • Very painful periods
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • More than one miscarriage

Photos: Woman's ex-lover sets fire to her house after she ended their relationship, kills 7 members of her family

Posted: 16 Mar 2016 09:00 AM PDT

Heartbreaking scenes unfolded in Koster, the North West farming town of Reagile, South Africa as the coffins of Mojaki Elizabeth Mwale, 74, Christina Sepinki Mwale, 36, Abram Mwale 15, Samantha Mwale, 12, Refilwe Mwale 10, Ofentse Mwale 8 and Precious Mwale, 3, were lowered into their graves in a mass funeral on Tuesday, March 15.

The seven victims were burnt to death when the jilted lover poured petrol in the shack which his ex shared with other members of her family and set it on fire on Monday, March 8. The 49-year-old suspect who is in police custody committed the heinous act after his girlfriend, Mammy Mwale, the mother of three of the victims, ended their relationship.

A family member Emily Mwale and an eyewitness said the man burst into the house with a bottle full of petrol and started pouring them on her and Mammy Mwale.

"They began to fight, Mammy pushed him outside but he overpowered her. He then ran into the house and poured petrol all over, got out and ran away, and before we could think we saw a blazing fire," said Emily amidst tears.

Neighbours and residents said the couple's relationship had been rocky for the past year, and that the suspect had made threats that he would kill her. The man's mother condemned the wicked act and said the law must punish him.

"He has done a horrible thing, he loved Mammy too much. I do not like what he has done, he told me that he was going to kill everyone in that family. I want the law to punish him"

The North West police department spokesman, Leonard Hlathi who confirmed  the tragic incident said the suspect has been charged with seven counts of murder, as well as arson.

Mourners sat under a giant white tent singing hymns. African National Congress (ANC) Women League members dressed in their signature green and black uniform held flowers while looking at the seven coffins lined up in front of them.

Family spokesman Jackie Segakweng said the family was still in shock by the death of the seven family members.

"It is a shock to us. This is a technical knock-out. It is a whitewash…" he said.
Segakweng said he hoped the government would take drastic action to prevent further such deaths. "We cannot afford to see these deaths day and night."

Lerato Mekgwe, circuit manager in Kgetleng, told mourners that women must break the silence of abuse. Mekgwe said she was once in an abusive relationship and left only after her husband shot and wounded her.

"The signs were there but, I ignored them, I was blinded by love. When my children told me my husband does not love them, I ignored them until he shot me. I took a decision that I am not staying in this relationship. I got out of the relationship. Today I am a cripple because of the abusive relationship."

Kgetlengrivier municipality mayor Kim Medupe called on residents to be calm and allow the law to take its course.

"We are not going to judge until the justice system runs its course," she said.
She described the murders as brutal and senseless. She told mourners a house would be built for the remaining members of the family.

The chairman of Kgalagatsane Primary School governing body, Dikgang Mokgosi, said they were shocked by the murders. He appealed to young women not to remain in relationships where they were being abused.

"The person who did this will be judged and punished. Make sure you fall in love with the right person, who will not kill you." he said.

Mourners battled to hide their emotions as they sang religious songs. Family members and some of the mourners sobbed when Kgalagatsane Primary School choir sang a hymn to bid farewell to four of their former school mates.

Abram, Ofentse and Refilwe were Mammy's children. Samantha and Precious were her sister's daughter. Grandmother Elizabeth Mwale together with her daughter Christina also died in the fire.

I helped Badeh convert N558m from Staff salaries to dollars- witness tells Court

Posted: 16 Mar 2016 08:56 AM PDT

At the resumed hearing of former Chief Of Air Staff, Alex Badeh's case at an Abuja High Court today March 16th, one of the witnesses presented before the court by EFCC, Salisu Abdullahi, told the court that while he served as director of finance and account of the Nigeria Air Force from October 2010 to December 2013, Badeh every month instructed him to convert N558 million from the Airforce monthly salary, into dollars and then take it to his home.

According to TheCable, Salisu said the monthly salary for the Airforce at the time was N4 billion with N558 million earmarked for the general administration of the chief of staff's office monthly.
"We receive about N4bn monthly for the payment of salaries. Our total wage bill, when I was finance director, was above N2bn. The balance of the money for personnel emolument was about N1.7bn‎. The sum of N558m was earmarked for the general administration of the chief of staff's office monthly. The balance is proposed for disbursement to the units. In most cases the chief of air staff directs that the amount be exchange into US dollars and taken to the headquarters Nigeria air force camp‎. When this money is exchanged it is brought to me, and I take this money to the chief air staff at home- his official residence at Niger Barracks. As military officers we don't request for any acknowledgment. In some cases, I do tell the finance officer to meet me at air house at Niger barracks with the money so that he can see when I hand over the money to the chief of air staff. The instruction to convert the money to dollar was not in writing. The chief of air gives many instructions that are not in writing. The instructions in writing are those requests forwarded to his office from the branches. When I came I met N120m earmarked for the office of the director of finance. It was part of the balance of personal emolument released monthly. But I rejected it. I asked that the money place under the control of the chief of staff for tours and visits, and other sundry issues."he said
