Photos: How a young man was brutally beaten, killed and burnt to death over N10 in Apo, Abuja

Posted: 14 Mar 2016 01:11 PM PDT

A young man identified as Ikechukwu Anigbo was reported killed and burnt to death over the weekend around a relaxation centre in Apo Mechanic Village, Abuja.

According to reports, the 32-year-old barber from Aku, Enugu State took a bike and argument ensued between him and the motorcycyclist when he paid. The man insisted his money is N60 instead of N50. It was alleged that attracted his colleagues to the scene by shouting "thief". The mob gathered and started beating Ikechukwu after which they set him ablaze.

Confirming the tragic incident, Mr. Ezema Virginius Chukwudike, the taskforce chairman of Abuja Spares Dealers Association, Apo, said "The mob that gathered following the alarm collected tyres from a vulcanising workshop near the scene and set the deceased on fire"
The next day, angry Igbo men in Apo blocked the road and started attacking any vehicle or Keke Napep with Hausa person or people who look like Hausa. Fortunately, the police were able to stop the riot before it escalated.

Speaking to Daily Trust, a friend of the deceased, Chukwudi Orji said he learnt about Ikechuwu's death when he got home at about 11p.m.
"I saw the fire, but I did not know that someone was inside. There was smoke everywhere; there was no way you would have known that there was someone in the fire, except you were there or somebody told you about it," he said.
"If I had known about it on time, I would have tried to save him because he was innocent," he added.
Speaking further, Mr Chukwudike said, "When news of the incident spread, people became angry. They wondered why the motocyclists would burn an innocent man. Even the man who voluntered to carry the corpse after he had been killed, was chased away"
He said this is not the first time that motorcyclists are killing someone over a paltry sum of money.
"A similar thing happened in Kabusa, when a boy was stabbed because of change. Another man was killed on Wumba road. The same change issue led to the death of a man in Damagaza. In his case, after he was killed, they kept him near a river until the next day," he said.
Chukwudike said the last time such an incident occurred in the area, the traders protested and that it took the intervention of riot policemen to bring the situation under control.
"Because the motorcyclists knew what they did, they boycotted this route from Sunday evening until policemen were deployed to the area."
Azeez Akinola, Anigbo's boss at the barbershop, corroborated Chukwudike story, saying the attitude of motorcyclists in the area is a cause for concern. Akinola who lives around the area where the late Anigbo lived, said he and two other people rushed out of their houses when they received news of the incident, but that the motorcyclists at Kabusa junction refused to take them to the scene.

Akinola who had worked with Anigbo for more than four years in a small barbershop at NEPA Junction, Apo, said it took them a longtime to find a motorcycle to convey them.

He said when they arrived the scene, they saw several people with sticks, but that they did not understand the magnitude of what had happened until someone pointed to the corpse of Anigbo in the fire.
"I could not believe it. There were heaps of iron treads from the burnt tyres on his body," Akinola said amidst tears.
"He was very gentle," Akinola continued." If small wound touch am, he go treat am for more than one week. I.K. can't ride a bicycle, talk less of motorcycle.  Because of fear, he refused to learn driving despite the fact that they were many people around to teach him," he said.
He said the matter was reported at the Apo Police Station, where he wrote a statement before police officers took the corpse to a mortuary.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the FCT police command, ASP Anjuguri Manzah said, "there was an early morning disagreement between two opposing groups that could have resulted in a clash but it was averted by the timely intervention of anti-riot police personnel."

Manzah said the FCT Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, warned people of the area to desist from violence at the wake of the disagreement and promptly deployed police officers to the scene. The commissioner assured residents of the area and other parts of FCT that adequate measures have been deployed to contain the situation, investigate and unravel the remote and underlying issues behind the upheaval.

He reiterated that any attempt to jeopardise the existing peaceful and serene atmosphere in the Federal Capital Territory will not be tolerated. Though normalcy has returned to the area, the relative peace enjoyed may not last for long if a lasting solution is not proffered. Chukwudike said government should stop motorcyclists from arming themselves with daggers.
"Why should government allow them to move around with daggers unchallenged?" he asked.
There are several versions of the incident, while some insist that the late Anigbo did not commit any crime, some alleged that he attempted to snatch the motorcycle he rode to the junction but was overpowered by the motorcyclists.  However, it is hoped that the police through their investigation will be able to give a clearer picture of what actually transpired.

Ese Oruru's abductor, Yunusa Dahiru arraigned in court

Posted: 14 Mar 2016 12:56 PM PDT

Yunusa Dahiru(pictured right) who abducted Ese Oruru from Bayelsa to Kano state last year, was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State today March 14th.  According to Sahara reporters, Dahiru was charged with abduction, kidnapping, unlawful carnal knowledge and sexual exploitation on March 8, 2016.

During his arraignment today, the prosecuting counsel, Kenneth Dika, asked the presiding judge, Justice H. A. Nganjiwa, to approve a secret trial as the victim, Ese Oruru, was a minor and deserved the protection of the courts.

The defence counsel, Kayode Olaoshebikan, opposed the application, arguing that Ese's lawyers had already exposed her to the public and there was no need for a secret trial.
"Ordinarily the law allows for a secret trial, but you must give the court reasons. Our own contention is that the matter is already in the public domain. The prosecution created a media nightmare for the girl on their own. They dug the pit, they should wallow in it. Even if the court allows it, the media cannot be excluded from the trial, but our own contention is that what they are seeking to prevent has already been created by them from the onset before the trial."he said.
The judge after hearing both arguments, adjourned the case to March 21st and ruled that Yunusa be remanded in prison custody until when judgement on his bail application will be given.

Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh will on Thursday appear before the House of Representatives committee on sports to answer questions on his shocking resignation as coach of the national team. He is expected to give his own explanation on his decision to quit his post with just a month to a crucial AFCON qualifier against Egypt.

"Oliseh has been invited by the committee on sports. He is to give his own side of his resignation story," a top source at the NASS told Vanguard.
Another source said:
"You know Oliseh, he will not hold back anything, he will give details of how some top officials made sure they frustrated him because they were not the ones who facilitated his appointment. You should expect him to shoot from the hips."
The minister for Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung is expected to be at the National Assembly for the hearing.
"The sports minister has insisted he be part of the committee's hearing and so he will be in attendance on Thursday," a sports ministry official said.

Lekki Building Collapse: Ambode sacks MD of Building Control Agency, 3 others

Posted: 14 Mar 2016 08:14 AM PDT

In the wake of the Lekki Gardens building collapse, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday approved the dismissal of the General Manager of the Building Control Agency (LASBCA) Engr. Adeigbe Olushola.

The Governor also approved the dismissal of the Head of Inspection and Quality Control in the Agency, Adeoye Thomas Adeyemi, the Zonal District Officer in the Agency, Dosunmu Gbadebo, while the Zonal Head of Eti-Osa West of the Agency, Mrs. Akinde Adenike Sherifat was compulsorily retired from the Civil Service.

Governor Ambode in a statement signed by the State Head of Service, Mrs. Olabowale Ademola, said the affected officers were dismissed having been indicted of negligence, which according to him, is an act of misconduct under the Public Service Rule 040401. Rule 040401 of the Public Service act of misconduct states inter alia: "a willful act of omission or general misconduct to the scandal of the pubic or to the prejudice of discipline and proper administration of the State Government" should be visited with dismissal from the Public Service in line with the Public Service Rule 040503.

The Head of Service said the disciplinary measure was the outcome of the recommendations of the Personnel Management Board to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who was personally grieved by the high number of fatalities that occurred as a result of the building collapse. She also warned public officials, private building owners or contractors who violate or subvert building regulations that it would no longer be business as usual, saying that the dismissal of the officers will serve as a wake-up call to public servants.

"It is also a clarion call to them to be alive to their responsibilities as any act of negligence will face sanctions, while hardworking officers will be rewarded appropriately," the Head of Service said. It would be recalled that on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, a building under construction at Lekki Gardens, Ikusenla Road, Ikate Elegushi, collapsed as a result of which many people died, and the State Government immediately mobilised all its rescue team comprising the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), among others, which led to the successful rescue of over 15 persons alive.

Is this Military training? Nigerian Airforce officials maltreat female recruit (photos/video)

Posted: 14 Mar 2016 06:37 AM PDT

Saw this video on Facebook, and found it hard to believe. A female recruit/student at the Nigerian Defense Academy was told to put her head on top of a wood while raising up her body in a 90 degrees angle after being rolled in mud. She was flogged by senior male recruits before she was put through this excruciating punishment all in the name of N.D.A training. Please watch the video and see more photos after the cut...

Why were male cadets torturing a female cadet? that's strange. Why were they doing it away from other cadets in the N.D.A? Aren't Female cadets in the N.D.A suppose to have their own quarters while male have theirs?

Let's be fair on the MD of Lekki Homes- AY the comedian writes

Posted: 14 Mar 2016 06:39 AM PDT

AY the Comedian who was once an ambassador of Lekki Gardens, has written an open letter to Nigerians asking people to be fair to the MD of Lekki Gardens, Richard Nyong who was arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Ebutte Metta over the death of 35 people in the collapse of a 5-storey building which was being constructed by his company in Lekki, Lagos. Read AY's letter which he posted on his Instagram page after the cut ...

"The Collapse of the Lekki Garden building is indeed an unforeseen tragedy that still hits me all the way to my soul. My deepest sympathy and condolences to those people who have died, been hurt and people who lost their love ones. As a one-time ambassador to Lekki Gardens, it will be difficult to disengage myself from the company whose vision was designed to help every common man to becoming landlords in Nigeria. In times like this we are one family. Let us standup and pray for all the families who have suffered and wish them peace in knowing that their loved ones may have gone on ahead of them to be with God Almighty. I know there is nothing I can say to ease anyone's sorrow, but this is just to let these families know that my thoughts are with them. As we sympathize with the families of the bereaved, let me clearly state that every human life is of inevitable value. No sentiment or general conviction would justify the sacrifice of human life. For this reason I have maintained a position of silence because of my affiliations with Lekki Gardens. The care of human life and property is one of the core responsibilities of a good government. Hence I will also not blame the government and their 'quick response' actions against the management of Lekki Gardens. Finally, I do know that the social Media is now for the good, the bad and the ugly. It is even more of an open battlefield, where abuses fly from one to another, destroying lives, self-esteem and individual self-worth. As much as I still believe in the vision of Mr Richard Nyong's Lekki Garden Real Estate project that has delivered over 6,000 homes to Nigerians, I want to hold hands with the Lekki Gardens family and grow stronger during this time of despair, and pray for a man whom has become a victim of circumstance. A man who truly cares for others. A man who has helped a lot of people within and outside his community. A man who single handedly handled the constructions and repairs of Government roads within Lekki. A creator of employment to thousands. This is not to position him above the law, it is a beacon for fairness within due process, peace and justice. #letsbefair ".

PZ Wilmar Foods Limited, producers of Mamador Cooking Oil has made good its promise to loyal consumers across the country in the Mamador Cook & Cruise Promo. She explained that she only bought Mamador Cooking Oil in the hope of winning airtime cards in the promo so she could use them to make calls.
