Photo: Tens of bodies of drowned African migrants found off Libya shores

Posted: 27 Mar 2016 09:48 AM PDT

Libyan Coast Guard on Friday, March 25 discovered tens of drowned bodies of African migrants from different nationalities, off Al-Garaboulli shores, 75 km eastern Tripoli.

The Head of Coast Guard in Al-Garaboulli, Abdullatif Al-Munser, said the decomposed bodies that came ashore Al-Garaboulli suggest that the boat, which those migrants were on, drowned days ago, adding that it is very difficult to identify the dead migrants as their bodies are totally decomposed..

He said they are probably from Eritrea and Niger. Local media recently warned of the resumption of the illegal immigration boat trips to Europe through the Libyan coast with the start of spring, which is regarded as a good time for migration by sea.The peports also indicates that there are at least 300 thousand African immigrants in Libya waiting to seize a chance to cruise for Europe on the human-traffickers' death boats.

Tinubu takes on Kachikwu over his recent comments on fuel scarcity, asks him to apologise

Posted: 27 Mar 2016 10:08 AM PDT

APC National leader, Bola Tinubu, says the comments made by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group MD of NNPC, Ibe Kachikwu, about the current fuel scarcity, was insulting and unacceptable and worsened the situation nationwide. Kachikwu had told state house correspondents on Wednesday March 23rd, that he was not a magician and that the fuel scarcity will be resolved sometime in May.

In a statement titled "Kachikwu needs to know that respect and good performance will do what magic cannot." which he released and personally signed yesterday March 26th, Tinuby condemned Kachikwu's comment. The statement reads in part ;

"Much public ire has been drawn to the statement made by Minister of State Ibe Kachikwu that he was not trained as a magician and that basically Nigerians should count themselves fortunate that the NNPC under his stewardship has been able to bring in the amount of petrol fuel it is currently doing. Perhaps, the statement by Kachikwu was made in a moment of unguarded frustration or was an awkward attempt at a joke. Whatever the motive, it was untimely and off-putting. The remark did not sit well with the Nigerian people; they were as right to feel insulted as the minister was wrong to have said such a thing. The fuel shortage is severely biting for the average person. They are forced to remain in lines far too long, for too much time, to pay too much money for too little fuel. This is no joking matter. Livelihoods and people's welfare are at stake. With so much on the line, Kachikwu's flippancy was out-of-line. He was basically telling Nigerians that they should be lucky that they are getting the inadequate supply they now suffer and that they should just be quiet and endure the shortage for several weeks more". Continuing, Tinubu stated that Kachikwu's comments were insulting and was not a good representation of APC and was more of the statements likened to PDP members who were voted out of government last year "It insulted the people by its tonality. He spoke with the imperious nature of a member of the elitist government the people voted out last year and not the progressive one they voted in. Kachikwu must be reminded that he was not coerced to take this job. He accepted the job and its responsibilities knowingly. He also must remember that he does not own NNPC. This also is not a private company that owes nothing to the public except the duty of fair dealing. He is a public servant. The seat he sits upon is owned by Nigerians not by him. The company he runs is owned by Nigerians not by him. They are his boss. He is not theirs. Power is vested in the people. He is a mere custodian or agent of their will. In talking to us in such a manner, he committed an act of insubordination. If he had talked so cavalierly to his boss in the private sector, he would have been reprimanded or worse. If wise, the man should refrain from such interjections in the future. As his ultimate bosses, the people have a right to demand the requisite performance and respect from him. He should apologise for treating them so lightly in this instance. His portfolio being a strategically important one, he needs to re-establish the correct relationship with the public. They no longer feel he is working for their optimal benefit as their servant. Instead, he seems to be standing above them, telling them to take it or leave it. For his policies and stint in office to be successful and a help to this government, he must have the support and belief of the people at this tough time. He must talk to them in a way that they believe he seeks their best interest and understands the hardship weighing upon them. He must ask them to work with him and, perhaps, to endure a bit longer but with the knowledge that he is working to resolve this matter as fast as he can and as permanently as possible. That he is dedicated to the position that once these current lines are gone that never again shall they reappear as long as he has any influence in the matter."

It is shameful and embarrassing that small countries like Benin Republic, Togo don't have fuel queues- Doyin Okupe

Posted: 27 Mar 2016 10:04 AM PDT

In an article titled "The Truth about the Fuel crisis", former spokesperson to former pres. Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, said that it's a shameful thing for a country like Nigeria to still be experiencing fuel queues when smaller countries like Togo, Benin Republic, Botswana and even Swaziland never experience such.

He drummed support for all the measures being taken by the GMD of NNPC and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu. Read his article which he shared on Facebook after the cut...

The minister of state for Petroleum is a Nigerian I know by reputation only. When he was appointed I actually wondered why on earth will a man in his exalted international position and pedigree come into the murky arena of the Nigerian oil business. It can only be patriotism.
Since he assumed office I have noticed a high level of professionalism and candour.
But Nigerians abhor the truth. The minister said a few weeks ago that it is cheaper to import fuel than process our crude locally. I thought that should be obvious to all discerning minds. Our newest refinery is 35years old.
The capacity of the refinery to fractionate
Crude reduces drastically with age.In its best form you get about 51% PMS per barrel of crude refined. But at the current ages of our refineries we hardly can do more than 35-40%.
Therefore our policy of setting aside crude for local refining is outdated and counter productive and should be STOPPED.
Secondly the minister said this present fuel crisis will tarry till May and all hell was let loose. The Hon Minister is right.
He quietly informed the Nation that NNPC is now responsible for 100% of our fuel imports. The reason for this anomaly is not farfetched.
We consume 40m liters of PMS daily. At about $645/tonne that comes to about 55cents per liter is $22m/day. Which importer and which bank in Nigeria of today can open $22m daily?!!!! Not even the Almighty Nnpc! So that is the real cause of the scarcity. The truth is what the minister said, its not going away soonest.
The only reasonable, cost effective and efficient way of ensuring Nigerians get petroleum products regularly and continuously, without further complicating the unavailability of the dollar and its continued stagnation of the national economy, is by :
1. Scrapping the PPRA
2. Stopping the allocation of crude daily for local refining.
3. Allocating appropriate volume of crude to the oil Majors under a transparent oil swap arrangement.
4. Invest in and improve the facilities of discharging PMS in all our Ports.
5. Completely deregulate the downstream
Sector of the petroleum and stop the federal government from selling petrol. Previous Nigerian governments have sustained this practice to their detriment. We need not continue it especially in the face prevailing economic hardship. It is not done anywhere and citizens are the ultimate beneficiaries.
It is shameful and embarrassing that small countries like Benin Republic, Togo and even land locked countries like Botswana and Swaziland do not have fuel queues.

Nigerian scam: Seven people, including a Nigerian indicted for fraud and money laundering in the U.S

Posted: 27 Mar 2016 03:54 AM PDT

A woman and others admitted they helped run a Nigerian scam that defrauded South Mississippi residents and many others through work-at-home and mystery shopper jobs and re-shipping scams. The victims were targeted through emails, online advertising, identities stolen, fake credit cards made. The ill-gotten goods and other illegal proceeds were re-shipped to Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, China, UAE, Haiti.

The suspects are: Ann Louise Franzen of Kiln; Gary Barnard, Shawn Ann White and Michele Gayle Fee, all of Manteca, Calif.; and Tara Lynn Thomas of Turlock, Calif.
The court records show they each pleaded guilty Tuesday, March 22 to conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States.

They and three others including a Nigerian, Funso Hassan, 26 and Anthony Shane Jeffers of Maryville, Tenn, were indicted in an investigation that revealed scams that solicited workers in mass emails, paid workers with bogus checks and money orders and used stolen identities and fake credit cards to purchase high-dollar items shipped to the workers, who re-shipped them to other countries.

Chief U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola Jr. has set their sentencing for June 21, 2016. They each face up to five years in prison, three years' probation and a fine of up to $250,000. Franzen, Barnard and Thomas remain free pending sentencing.
Funso Hassan and Jeffers are set for trial April 11, 2016. They face prosecution on charges to include money laundering and fraud. Hassan remains in custody.

The seven were charged in a 19-count indictment filed last July. The crimes included identity theft, theft of government funds, bank fraud, wire fraud and mail fraud. The investigation started after Customs and Border Patrol agents began intercepting packages containing millions of dollars in fake checks and money orders.

A Homeland Security Investigations probe revealed the conspiracy began Aug. 13, 2001 and continued through June 3, 2015. The scams solicited workers via emails and the Internet. Some workers were paid to receive and re-ship expensive items, including jewelry, purses, computers and cellphones. The items were bought with fake credit cards and stolen identities.

Workers were instructed to deposit checks in their accounts, keep part of it and send the rest to someone else. The ruse used fraudulent U.S. Postal Service labels and counterfeit money orders and the wiring of money with the use of fake identifications.

The indictment said ill-gotten merchandise was shipped to people in Nigeria and other countries, and actual money changed hands in wire transfers of as much as $113,000.

HSI agents have said they seized $3.1 million in bogus money from Franzen's home in 2012. She allegedly received bogus checks from Nigeria in a package labeled "local soap and sponge herbs". Smaller amounts were also from other defendants' homes in 2013.

Actual money changed hands through wire transfers of as high as $113,000 at a time, the indictment said.

Ifeanyi Ubah lifts Eagles' Spirit with $8,000, charges them to beat The Pharoahs in Egypt

Posted: 27 Mar 2016 02:22 AM PDT

The Super Eagles received a morale booster of $5,000 from the President of FC Ifeanyi Ubah, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah ahead of the reverse leg of the 2017 Africa Nations Cup against Egypt in Alexandria on Tuesday.

The Chairman/CEO of Capital Oil and Gas had promised $5,000 to the national team if they beat the Pharaohs in the first leg on Friday in Kaduna, but the Eagles were forced to a 1-1 draw by the North Africans. However, Dr. Ubah, who is also the Publisher of The Authority newspapers, yesterday lifted the spirit of the players when he presented a cheque for the amount to the team at their Africa Continental Hotel camp, despite not winning the match.

The team officials also benefited from the package as they received $3,000. He urged them to put the result of the first leg behind and positively work towards a win in Alexandria on Tuesday.
"I am giving this to the Super Eagles to motivate them to win the match in Alexandria on Tuesday. I made the pledge to give the team $5,000 as our support to inspire them to pick the maximum points against Egypt in Kaduna on Friday. Although the game ended in a 1-1 draw, it is my conviction that the team deserve to be motivated ahead of the game on Tuesday in Egypt.
Dr Ubah, who during the visit to the Super Eagles with the management of FC Ifeanyi Ubah, advised the players to take the positives from the match in Kaduna and go all out for a win in Alexandria, saying, "Nigeria has the players and the capability to achieve victory in Egypt.
"I am an advocate of motivation for result. That is the reason I and the FC Ifeanyi Ubah management have come to lift the spirit of the team. We believe in the Super Eagles and will continue to support the team," he said.
