Photo: Brazilian officials refuse to register a baby's Yoruba & Ethiopian names, said it could cause "future suffering"

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 01:18 PM PDT

A couple has been told by Brazilian officials to change their newborn daughter's Yoruba & Ethiopian names because they made "no sense at all" and could cause "possible future suffering". However, the couple, Cizinho Afreeka and Jéssica Juliana insist the real reason their daughter's chosen name, Makeda Foluke, was denied is racism.

When the new parents found out they were expecting a baby girl, they wanted to give her an African name. So they picked Makeda (after the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba) and Foluke, a Yoruba name. But after baby Makeda Foluke was born, Brazilian officials in Rio de Janeiro, where Afreeka and Juliana live, refused to register the baby, citing concerns with her name.

According to the blog Black Women In Brazil, anytime a baby is born in the South American nation the baby's name must be registered with officials. Although it seems like a simple process, when the parents tried to register their newborn daughter's name, they were turned down.

Officials at the registration office said the baby girl's name made "no sense at all" when pronounced in Portuguese and "could provide possible future suffering for the person in social life."
The couple think the decision is based on racism.

"It's a form of racism that takes place in Brazil: the racism of subtleties," Afreeka said. "It should be very natural a man and a black woman adopting an African name, as the country is made up of three races. It is difficult to prove. Only those in this skin is knows."

Registration officials insisted racism wasn't the problem, it was the name. Apparently, whenever a child is named, officials have to assess whether or not the name can affect the child later in life, which leads many parents to choose European-sounding names. Luiz Fernando, a civil registration official, said:
"The procedure is necessary with any name that can be used to leave the child in a vexatious situation or bullying. You have to filter. These procedures are normal, no one refused to do the registration. It is not the name, not the meaning. It's pronunciation, diction. Racism is rarely in people's minds."
Brazil officials suggested the couple give Makeda a more European-sounding first name and use the African-sounding one as her middle name. The couple refused.

"It's not a name phonetically alien to Portuguese, we thought about it. There are African names that change the pronunciation and cause greater estrangement," Juliana said.

"We decided together quite in early in the pregnancy and we came to call her Makeda. Family and friends already speak naturally because we were inserting this. What's the problem with naming her Makeda if they register so many European names?"

Clutch magazine reports that the parents will have to appeal to a judge to see if they can officially give her an African name. But if things don't turn out in their favour, Makeda's parents said they're still not changing their mind.
"I will keep on until the end," Afreeka vowed. "Either it will be Makeda Foluke or she'll be with no registration."

Egypt 1-0 Nigeria (Super Eagles say goodbye to AFCON 2017)

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 01:10 PM PDT

The Super Eagles are now doomed in their aspirations to qualify for next year's AFCON tournament in Gabon after losing 0-1 to Egypt in Alexandria tonight. The task before the Eagles became tougher after Friday's 1-1 draw with Egypt in Kaduna and the withdrawal of Chad from the AFCON race.

Nigeria missed out on the 2015 edition in Equatorial Guinea and were desperate for a return. The first half ended goalless with the Super Eagles keeping to coach Samson Siasia's tactical master plan to keep proceedings neat and tidy and then attack the Egyptians on the counter.

But with the Egyptians resolute they soon found a way past the Nigerians in the second half.

19 year old Ramadan Sobhy scored in the 65th minute after a deflection off his shot ensured the Super Eagles left the field with hands in their mouth. Upon scoring Nigeria, the Egyptians introduced a striker with the hope that they could pull the Nigerian defence across the lines knowing fully well the Nigerians will attack, attack and attack as they needed a goal badly.

Ighalo, ineffective throughout the match, drifted towards the left side as new entrant Alex Iwobi and Ahmed Musa tried to play centrally. Time and time again, Nigeria were thwarted by the Egyptian defence causing the Nigerian backline to play high up and expose themselves in 3 vs 4 or 3 vs 5 situations.

And then the moment of hope came! Victor Moses, hardworking through out the night blazed a rocketing shot from almost 30 yards which hit the bar and spiraled towards the other corner. Victor Moses and the Super Eagles bench were distraught, how wasn't that a goal? Even with four minutes of extra time, the Super Eagles looked more likely conceding a goal than scoring one.

Nigeria with 2 points from three games, with just one game against Tanzania remaining, is effectively out of qualification for next year's AFCON tournament.

My son should be a footballer, just like his dad - Cristiano Ronaldo

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 01:02 PM PDT

Real Madrid star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has said that he wishes his son becomes a professional top footballer just like himself, but said he wouldn't force his son to take up football as a career.

Ronaldo frequently uploads pictures of himself and his son in the gym or playing football and says his son's athletic characteristics and love for football at 5 years of age is a sign his son might go into the football world.
"I want my son to be a player. I am a footballer and I want him to be one too," the Real Madrid star told the Chinese channel Zhejiang Satellite TV, which has been filming Ronaldo as part of a reality show based around the player.
I think he has something of an athlete about him, he has athletic characteristics. Obviously he is very young, a baby, he's only five but he loves football, that is a big plus.
I have 30 balls at home, he is always with the ball and he loves it. But I will not force him to be a player because it comes naturally, it has to be his choice,
He will be whatever he wants to be, I am not going to push him at all. But obviously I want Cristiano to be a player. A top one, like his dad." He said

Photos: 27-year-old former Indian model commits suicide, leaves note which said she was mentally and physically abused by husband

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 12:52 PM PDT

A 27 year old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her apartment in south Delhi's Defence Colony Friday night, March 27. The woman, identified as Priyanka Kapoor, was found hanging from the ceiling fan, said police. Her family blamed Priyanka's husband Nitin Chawla,  for her death, claiming that he abused her. He has been arrested and sent to judicial custody.

That fateful night, the former model's mother was unable to reach her on the phone. When the family went to her residence, they were prompted to call the police after finding the door locked from inside.

According to the police, at 12.30 am on March 27, they received a call from Priyanka's family members, who said her room was locked from inside and she was not responding to their pleas to open the door.
"We broke open the door with help from fire brigade personnel," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Prem Nath.
The sub-divisional magistrate is conducting an inquiry, said Prem Nath, adding that police had recorded Priyanka's sister Dimpi's statement. "Dimpi alleged that Chawla subjected her to physical and mental abuse over dowry demands," he said.

A senior police officer said a two-page suicide note was recovered from the spot, in which Priyanka, reportedly said she was scared of her husband.
In the note, she said
'This is the biggest mistake of my life... marrying him... I am scared'," said the officer.
A case has been registered against Chawla under Section 115 (abatement of offence punishable with death or imprisonment for life) , 498A (husband or relative... subjecting her to cruelty), 304B (where death is caused by any burns or bodily injury or occurs otherwise) and 34 (common intention).
Police said Chawla, who runs a pub in GK II market, was facing financial problems. "He had not been able to pay his rent for the last two months," said the officer, adding that the couple often fought over money issues.

Priyanka married Nitin in January this year. She worked at an event management company and had met Nitin at his pub, said police. Nitin has two children from his first marriage and his son lived with him and Priyanka, said police.

Priyanka reportedly was not happy about this arrangement, said police. However, her family said this was not true as Priyanka loved children.
"I have known grief, I have known happiness, sadness and emotions, but my husband made me helpless for the first time" the note reads. "Nitin has a rape case on him registered in Mumbai. I never knew he would do so bad to me. He beat me like a devil just after a month of wedding. When I asked him to call my family he beat me hard. I had married Nitin just because he told me he loves me unconditionally. But now he asks me to leave his house. I broke my relations with my mother just because of him. He is a selfish man,"
Priyanka further goes on to write how she had expected to receive love and instead was only subjected to pain and regular beatings for petty issues. Priyanka also accused her mother-in-law stating that according to her, 'whatever Nitin did was not wrong'.
"Nitin wanted me to leave his house, so I am leaving the world."
According to senior police officials the couple used to fight a lot as was confirmed by some neighbours as well.
"The accused had also not paid house rent and as a result confrontations between the couple had ensued. He also had issues with her going to clubs. When Nitin's 10-year-old son from his earlier marriage came home, Nitin had an argument with Priyanka. He asked her to leave the house," said the officer.
The suicide note also states how the former model spent her last moments waiting for her husband.
"Nitin has not come home since the last three days and only sent a message on WhatsApp to vacate his home," the note reads.

Photos: Promising young woman who was UN Secretary-General for a day in 2014 dies

Posted: 29 Mar 2016 10:15 AM PDT

Raquelina Fernando Langa, the promising young woman who came to New York in 2014 to spend a day as UN Secretary-General with Ban Ki-moon passed away on March 25, 2016.

In a tribute, Mr. Ban expressed his deep personal condolences, saying: "While her life was short, her legacy will be long. Raquelina was more than a teenager from Mozambique; she was the embodiment of why the world needs to invest in the health, well-being and future of young women everywhere.

With her passionate drive and expansive heart, she achieved a depth of character that most people, no matter their age, may never attain."

Raquelina was a young Mozambican woman, then in grade 10, who in May 2013, during a visit by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to her school, Matheus Samsão Muthemba School in Polana Caniço, Maputo, Mozambique, asked, if "a girl could become Secretary-General" and, if so, what she needed to do to achieve that goal. Impressed by the question, Mr. Ban invited her to come to UN Headquarters in New York as his special guest for a day. Sponsored by UN Women, the visit materialized on 12 August 2014, International Youth Day.

"We would like to convey our condolences institutionally, and personally, for those who knew Raquelina," said Florence Raes, UN Women Representative in Mozambique. "We will continue to honour her memory by pursuing her dream, bringing about broader access to education for girls as well as secure environments free of violence, so that any girl—whether vulnerable, disenfranchised or from the south—could aspire to one day be the United Nations Secretary-General.
