UNILAG set to resume Academic Activities on May 2nd

Weeks after the University of Lagos (UNILAG) closed down due to a strike by the students over their living conditions, the University Senate at its emergency meeting held today Friday, April 22, directed that the institution should resume full academic activities on Monday, May 2, 2016, with examinations commencing the week after. Students however have to adhere to the few conditions stated on their website. Read after the cut...



'Visit the University website www.unilag.edu.ng and download the Undertaking and Indemnity Form.
· Students are to complete the Undertaking Form and get it notarized.
· Parents and Guardians are to complete the Parents Indemnity Form.
· Completed Undertaking Form which must be notarized and Parent's Indemnity Form should be submitted at the various Departments and a clearance obtained. The clearance would be required to gain access into examination halls.
· Students accommodated in halls of residence are to obtain a clearance from the Departmental Officer which must be presented at the halls of residence to gain access into their rooms from Monday, May 2, 2016.
· Students are expected to visit the University website from Friday, April 22, 2016 and complete the clearance process on or before Monday, May 2, 2016.
· Examinations would commence from Monday, May 9, 2016. Consequently, students are expected to generate their examination dockets and ensure it is duly endorsed by their Course Advisers between Monday, April 25 and Monday, May 2, 2016.
· No student would be readmitted without completing the above process.
- The University would endeavour to provide electricity in the various halls of residence between the hours of 7.00 pm and 7.00 am daily. The boreholes in the hostels would continue to provide water supply to the hostels until normal supply from the Lagos State Water Corporation resumes.
- Examination commences on Monday, May 9, 2016. Students are to confirm their examination time-table from the various Faculties/Departments."

UNIJOS appoints Prof. Maimako as new Vice-Chancellor for the University

The Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences of the University of Jos, Prof. Sebastian Maimako, has been approved by the Governing Council of the University as the new Vice-Chancellor for the University. His appointment which is for a single term of 5 years takes effect from 23rd June, 2016.



In a statement issued today, UNIJOS Principal Assistant Registrar, Information and Publications said the new VC's choice followed recommendation by the Selection Board at its Special Meeting held today, Friday 22nd April, 2016.

NFF name a referee for a Premier League match - the only problem? He died in January

Yeah you read that right!.... In a league recently ranked as even better than the Scottish league, it sounds rather bizzare that a dead man could be appointed to officiate a Nigerian Premier League match, but that is the state of things right now as 'self-imposed' NFF President Chris Giwa attempts to take control of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Giwa, who got a Jos High court injunction to take over leadership of the NFF despite Amaju Pinnick being FIFA's recognized NFF president, has named all the referees to take part in this weekend's matches and Wale Akinsanya was assigned to Warri Wolves vs Giwa FC - the only issue is; Akinsanya died in January 2016.
Akinsanya passed away during a Nigeria Referees Association fitness test on January 22, 2016 and has since been buried.
This latest effort by Giwa to stamp his authority, could land Nigerian football in troubled waters with FIFA, who have warned that the country could face global sanctions from the game if the Amaju Pinnick led board isn't allowed to carry out his functions and job effectively.

On Wednesday, Giwa's group had rejected the peace move by sports minister, Solomon Dalung to end the crisis rocking the football federation.

I've been a season-ticket holder at Arsenal for 24 years and I've never felt so low about the club I love. Every year I pay a fortune to watch matches at the Emirates but I just don't get value for money anymore - and it's been like that for too long. After Arsene Wenger joined the club in 1996, us fans were spoiled with top players, attractive, attacking football, and titles and trophies galore. It's gone downhill since that day. I went to the Crystal Palace game at the weekend and it's got so bad for fans like me that you can now even buy match tickets on the day of the game. The last time I can remember that happening is when I was a boy - I'm 29 now. I couldn't bring myself to go to the West Brom game last night: I sold my tickets BACK to the club. I'm sick of going to watch Arsenal knowing we're going to lose or draw.
My dad has been a season ticket holder all his life and now even he is talking about getting rid of it. He's been watching Arsenal for 55 years and just can't take it anymore. Instead of going to the Emirates I watched the West Brom match at home with some friends. As the match progressed I found myself getting more and more frustrated. My friend turned to me and said: "You're the only football fan I've ever seen who is still going mental when you're 2-0 up". I'm sure I'm not alone among Arsenal fans. But how did we get to the point where loyal, die hard fans are simply giving up on the club? Simple: we're in this mess because because of our manager and the board. In American billionaire Stan Kroenke, we've got a chairman who doesn't appear to be a football supporter. And I'm sorry to say that Arsene Wenger's time is up. I love him, and he gave fans some incredible memories with the Invincibles season, three Premier League titles and six FA Cup wins, but he's had his time. He can't tell players off when they need to be told they're not performing. He hasn't bought a world class striker since Thierry Henry. None of The Invincibles have ever been replaced.
His press conferences after each game always seem to consist of him moaning the team was hard done by. In reality, that's just not true. They just haven't been good enough. It's clear to the fans that Arsenal is no longer really a football club, it's a business. The owner seems happy with a Champions League place each year - and that's it. It doesn't seem to matter to him whether we actually win anything, as long as that top four spot is secure. Arsenal fans are simply not being rewarded with trophies for the amount of money we have to spend to watch our team. The time has come for wholesale changes at the top of the club: we now need a new management team and a new owner to get us moving forward again, and to finally deliver the title that the fans crave - and know the club is capable of delivering under the right leadership. Jose Mourinho once said that Wenger was a "specialist in failure". I didn't agree with him at the time but now it saddens me to say that he was right. If Wenger stays I won't be going next season.

Transgender woman Sarah McBride shared an Instagram photo on Thursday from inside a women's restroom in North Carolina, where the recent passage of House Bill 2 prohibits transgender people from using the restroom that matches their sexual identity rather than the one on their birth certificate.

The LGBT rights activist who made headlines as president of her college's student body when she came out as transgender in 2012, wrote:  

"Here I am using a women's restroom in North Carolina that I'm technically barred from being in.
They say I'm a pervert.
They say I'm a man dressed as a woman.
They say I'm a threat to their children.
They say I'm confused.
They say I'm dangerous.
And they say accepting me as the person I have fought my life to be seen as reflects the downfall of a once great nation.

The Permanent Secretary of the Osun State Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Adebimpe Ogunlumade was kidnapped by gunmen‎n while returning to Osogbo from Abuja today April 22nd. According to a statement released by the state's Head of Service, Sunday Olayinka Owoeye, Ogunlumade was kidnapped along with her driver, Oladapo Arogundade Ajani and a Director from the ministry, Tajudeen Badejoko.

They were kidnapped at gunpoint at Obajana along Lokoja-Okene road in Kogi state. The state Auditor General who also traveled with the officials escaped the scene of the kidnap.
"The officials were returning from Abuja where they attended the briefing on the State and Local Government Reforms Project; a World Bank and European Union Programme," the head of service statement read in part
The Osun State Police Command Public Relations officer, Folasade Odoro, confirmed the incident and said efforts were being made to rescue those kidnapped.

Farmer reveals how 40 of her newborn lambs were killed by local dogs

Oxfordshire farmer, Isobel Bowden was left devastated after discovering that 40 of her new born lambs were savagely beaten and killed in one night by dogs that had been left outside by their owners. In a facebook post, the heartbroken farmer warned dog owners of the damage their pets can do when they are let loose and not controlled. She then posted graphic photos of the 40 dead lambs, and some injured ones, appealing to owners to make sure their dogs are kept indoors overnight so as to prevent another incident from happening. After a manic and problematic few weeks lambing and feeling completely exhausted we have just lost 40 lambs in one field to a dog attack last night . . . Fair to say that's finished me off this week ! Keep dogs shut in at night and on a lead around livestock!! Absolutely devestated !!
'I have debated with myself whether to post this but I think it's necessary to make people realise the damage dogs out of control can do,' she wrote. 'These dogs were left outside a property loose at night and this is some of the heartbreaking images of the damage they have left behind. 'It is not the dogs' fault - they are animals with instinct and it is your responsibility as owners to keep them away from livestock for their sakes as well as the poor defenceless animals that will be their prey.'
'Keep dogs shut in at night and on a lead around livestock!!, 'For the lambs that we have worked endlessly to deliver and care to be wiped out in one field overnight is truly heartbreaking, as it would be for any farmer.'

N1bn libel suit: Lagos court refuses Obanikoro’s request to restrain some Media outlets

An Ikeja High Court has refused former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro's request for an order of injunction against some media publications to stop them from publishing news about him and retract all previous damaging news publications via a letter of apology through their various media platforms.

Obanikoro had filed a suit after the defendants (Premium Times, Punch newspapers and Sahara Reporters) allegedly published an audio of how he with others allegedly plotted to rig the the Ekiti governorship polls.
He claimed that these organisations had shared damaging material which made him to suffer various political and personal losses.

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, in her ruling, described Obanikoro's application as lacking in merit and stated that an injunction was inappropriate as the application had no merit.  

According to her, 'It is an error to seek to restrain a publisher of an article on the grounds of libel if there is no proof before the court that such material is libelous'
