Stop Blaming Us For Your Failures- PDP Tells APC Posted: 05 Apr 2016 01:16 PM PDT Following the repeated action by the APC to blame the immediate past government and party for all the hardship presently being faced in the country, the PDP has asked the ruling party APC to stop the blame game and come up with solutions to address the issues bothering Nigerians. PDP Chairman, Alimodu Sheriff said this while inaugurating four committees in the PDP in Abuja today April 5th "The leadership of the party share the pains of Nigerians after one year in office of the All Progressives Congress-led government. Nigerians now have the opportunity of comparing the PDP and also the APC. The ultimate judge of this exercise are Nigerians. Instead of the APC addressing the problems of the country, the ruling party has kept blaming the PDP for lack of petrol in the country. I saw the other day a publication by one of the leaders of the APC that we are responsible for lack of petrol after their one year in office. I would like to advise the leaders of the APC to stop blaming us in the PDP, we are now in the opposition party, repositioning our party to show Nigerians that we could do better." |

Posted: 05 Apr 2016 09:17 AM PDT The first witness presented by the EFCC to testify at the trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki, Michael Wetkas, told the Code of Conduct Tribunal that the Personal Assistant to Senate President Bukola Saraki made N600,000 to N900,000 deposits into his personal account 50 times in one day. According to The Cable, Wetkas said Saraki made the deposits during his tenure as governor of Kwara state. "When the defendant was governor of Kwara state between 2003 and 2011. The commission received several petitions from various groups. One of the petitioners was Kwara Freedom Network. They brought several petitions all bordering on abuse of office by the defendant, misappropriation of public fund and money laundering. Sometime in 2014 the then executive chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde received intelligence reports of suspicious transactions involving the defendant. He set up a team of investigators. Our task was to investigate the intelligence reports. The investigation report was reviewed by my team. In the course of our investigation, we discovered that there were several companies which were linked to the defendant. Some of them include Carlisle Properties Investment Ltd, Skyview Properties Ltd, LimKvars Ltd, and TIly-lie Ltd. Some of the companies maintain accounts at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Zenith Bank, Access Bank, and other banks. From the investigation, it was discovered that the defendant maintained three accounts at GTB. The first account is a naira currency account; the second is a US dollar account, and the third is a pound sterling account. The naira account was analyzed, and it was discovered that between 2005 and 2013 the account had an in-flow of about N4 billion. The major source of in-flow into the accounts was loans taken from GTB within the period. The loans were about N2.5 billion, and the other source of in-flows into the account was massive lodgments by individuals. Other in flows into the account were from the companies. It was discovered that money was used for the purchase of property. The dollar account was also analyzed. The major source of in-flow into the dollar account was Tily-lie Properties Ltd, which was about $2m. Another source was from Bureau de Change companies. And the rest was cash lodgments by individuals. The cash in the dollar account between 2009 and 2013 was $6m. We discovered that up to $3.4m was wired to American Express Services Europe Limited, which was used to fund the defendant's American Express Service New York card account number 374588216836009. The defendant wired over 1.5m pound sterling to Fortis Bank for the purchase of property in the UK. After that, because of the suspicious in-flows into the account, the bank (GTB) officials were invited. The reason for the invitation of the officials was that some of the individuals who were making the cash lodgment into the account were bank officials. One Oluwa Tujimu reported to the commission. From our of interactions with him, we discovered that some of the lodgments were made through a superior at the bank, Bayo Daudu, who was the relationship manager of the account. In our interaction with Daudu, it was discovered the cash sums were handed over to him by the defendant for lodgment in the account. According to Daudu, he goes to Kwara state government house to collect the money from the defendant for lodgment into the account at the GRA Ilorin branch of GTB. "We discovered one name, Abdul Adama, who made transaction 50 times into the account in a single day. The sum was broken down to N600, 000 and N900,000, and was lodged in the same day. Subsequently, after that one Ubi made a lodgment on the same day about 20 times in the same range of N600, 000 and N900, 000. We looked for Adama and invited him. He reported that the cash sums were handed over to him by the defendant and stated further that the cash sums that were lodge in by Ubi into the same account were from the accused. Adama and Ubi were personal assistants to the accused while he was governor. GTB said they had done the needful by reporting the suspicious transactions to FIU." |

Kaduna bans sale of petroleum products in jerrycans Posted: 05 Apr 2016 08:30 AM PDT The Kaduna State Security Council has unanimously agreed to ban the sale of petroleum products in jerrycans throughout the 23 Local Government Areas of the State. A statement by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan today April 5th, says the Council based its decision on legal and security considerations, compounded by the environmental hazard petroleum products in jerrycans can cause. Noting the difficulties imposed by the current petrol scarcity, the Council appealed to citizens to remain patient. It assured the public that the state government is working with the NNPC and other agencies to reduce the hardship associated with the shortages of petroleum products. Council also observed that the unsafe handling of petroleum products during periods like this has been associated with fires, destruction and fatal consequences for innocent victims. The Council further warned those engaged in sabotage and illegal sale of petroleum products in the State to desist with immediate effect. The Security Council also directed the arrest and prosecution of any one found violating the ban, and the outright confiscation of any petroleum products found in their possession." Residents of the state are urged to help uphold and enforce the Kaduna State Petroleum Products (Anti-Hoarding and Adulteration) Law of 1992 This law empowers a task force to ensure that petrol is sold in a safe manner, and imposes a financial penalty on violators. |

Ikeja exits labour talks to safeguard service excellence... Posted: 05 Apr 2016 08:29 AM PDT Ikeja Electric has discontinuedtalks with Labour over the recent disengagement of workers, stating that the negotiation was tending towards a proposition that would jeopardise transparency, employee performance and service excellence to customers. Last month, Labour had picketed the electricity distribution company for three days over the disengagement of workers who failed to meet the company's performance objectives and were deemed to be performing below standard. However, the picketing was suspended after Ikeja Electric reached an agreement with the National Union of Electricity Workers (NUEE) and Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to set up a committee to review the performance appraisal and competency assessment process. Citing the reason for its action, Ikeja Electric's Head of Corporate Communications, Felix Ofulue, explained that the company had to discontinue due to a clear determination by representatives of Labour to stick to a pre-conceived and irreversible position that the process was flawed. Therefore, the review process was an exercise in futility. Rather than engage in an objective and constructive review of the whole appraisal process which is tailored in line with global best practices as Ofulue pointed out, Labour preferred an arbitrary review in which reduced criteria would be applied to certain selected employees who are members of the union". In his words: "The performance review process was classified into four stages, clearly detailing steps to be taken at each stage. However, Labour, without taking any of these steps into consideration and any justifiable rationale, insisted the process was flawed and demanded that Ikeja Electric must recall all disengaged staff". "While we remain committed to upholding best human capital processes and stakeholder engagement in fostering excellence in the workplace, there are indications that the propositions of certain actors in the negotiation process are against our resolve to provide improved services to our customers and are fixated on jeopardizing our overall interest to move the industry forward so we had no choice but to withdraw in the interest of our consumers", he added. Ofulue noted that the electricity sector had suffered great setback over several decades of mismanagement and stressed that it was time to focus on applying quality human capital to salvage the situation. Calling for restraint, the Ikeja Electric spokesmanpointed out that Labour was morally bound to protect theoverall wellbeing of the masses, and not the interests of a select few. He cited the last picketing exercise which caused great distress to the general public and cautioned against saboteurs and detractors who were bent on scuttling the negotiation process for selfish reasons. He stressed that Ikeja Electric would resist any attempt to allow its customers go through another harrowing outage ordeal, cautioning that the company will not hesitate to seek redress at the Industrial Court shouldLabour disrupt its ability to provide customers electricity supply and worsen the power situation which over the few weeks have been dismal due to grid challenges and gas shortage. |
