Presidency moves against emergency billionaires ..says holders of public office must account for their wealth

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 12:42 PM PDT

Serving and former public office holders will henceforth be made to account for their wealth, Vice President Yemi Osibajo (SAN), has said. He stated this at a town hall meeting convened by the United Action for Change, UAC in Lagos today Saturday April 23rd.

Osinbajo who fielded questions from various labour and professional organisations as well as individuals at the meeting held at the Ikeja Airport Hotel, said "the era of people becoming emergency billionaires is gone" and would no longer be tolerated by the Buhari-led administration.

"Anybody who cant explain his wealth must be brought to account. Everyone who has served in public office must account for what they own. This is the change we want Nigerians to support", he declared, adding that the dream of the Buhari government is to have a "country where integrity is our national culture."

The VP assured that the policies of the government are not tainted by any hidden agenda, stressing that at the end of their tenure, Buhari and himself will be ready to present their bank account details and assets owned to convince Nigerians they never abused their positions to get richer.

While pleading that Nigerians should be more patient with the administration, Osinbajo said the change mantra of the government was not and will never be a mere slogan but a necessity they are irrevocably committed to.

"Nigerians should never lose hope in the face of present difficulties. We have the best opportunity to change this nation now because we have a leader who is honest in all his dealings. There is a determination by this government to change the nation's direction", he assured.

Answering questions on the social security scheme promised some categories of Nigerians, the VP said the government remains committed to a health insurance scheme that will provide coverage for all Nigerians. He assured that the N5,000 monthly stipend promised poor Nigerians will soon take off, adding that a list of one million beneficiaries for a start is already being complied across the country.

He pleaded for the understanding of Nigerians on the biting fuel scarcity across the country, promising that a policy that will provide final solution will be unveiled in a matter of weeks. UAC Covener and National Legal Adviser of the ruling APC, Dr Muiz Banire, SAN in his opening remarks called for continuous support for the change Nigerians voted for at the 2015 general elections.

He explained that the body was "conceived as a vehicle to engage and sensitize Nigerians on the philosophical and moral significance of change working through its major platform: Change Nigeria."

Robert Pattinson and fiancee FKA Twigs end engagement

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 09:41 AM PDT

According to reports, actor Robert Pattinson has ended his relationship with singer FKA Twig. Below is what In Touch is reporting:
Don't cue the wedding bells! In Touch has exclusively learned that Robert Pattinson has canceled his wedding to singer FKA twigs! The two were supposed to tie the knot this summer but "Rob called it off," an insider revealed to the mag. This news comes as no surprise since things seemingly haven't been picture perfect between the two.
"It's been a long time coming. They were fighting all the time," the source said. According to the source, "Rob felt trapped" and the wedding plans were a "major drag" for the Twilight star.

Furthermore, FKA twigs wasn't the girl Robert thought she was — and her true colors eventually came to light during their wedding planning. "[She] isn't the girl for him. She's very jealous and he was sick of having to explain himself," the insider added.

"He's still young and just decided he wasn't ready to settle down." Maybe the Dior spokesman has had cold feet for a while, as In Touch previously reported he was secretly talking to his ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart back in December 2015.

This will be the first failed engagement for each of the two stars, who dated for six months before friend T-Pain revealed they were engaged in April 2015.

Here is why more than 48% of Nigerian Women Develop Fibroid... (New research )

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 09:35 AM PDT

Fibroid, also known as myoma, is a mass of compacted muscle and fibrous tissue that grows on the wall (or sometimes on the outside) of the uterus. It can be as small as a pea or as large as a grapefruit. Fibroids occur in 50 to 80 percent of women. Fibroids usually develop prior to pregnancy, though many women don't know they have one until they have an ultrasound or the fibroid is discovered during a pelvic exam.

For the 10 to 30 percent of pregnant women with fibroids who do end up having complications, the most common is abdominal pain, which occasionally may be accompanied by light vaginal bleeding.

Effects of Fibroids
Your risk of miscarriage and premature delivery does increase slightly if you have fibroids. They occasionally cause the baby to be in an abnormal position for delivery. They can also stall labor, or, if they're located in or near the cervical opening, they may block the baby's passage. All of these problems can increase
click this link:  http://www.fertilityhealth.com.ng
The majority of fibroids do not change their size during pregnancy, but one-third may grow in the first trimester. Although the data are conflicting and most women with fibroids have uneventful pregnancies.
Approximately 10% to 30% of women with uterine fibroids develop complications during pregnancy.  If a fibroid or cluster of fibroids is particularly large or is growing on the outside of the uterine wall, it can push the uterus into an abnormal position. It can also put pressure on the bladder or intestine, causing symptoms such as frequent urination, constipation, pelvic pain, or backache. Fibroids may also cause heavy menstrual bleeding.
Fibroids can interfere with fertility, and they occasionally cause complications during pregnancy. For example, if a large fibroid blocks the opening of a woman's uterus, she may have to deliver her baby by c-section.

Possible factors to note about fibroids:
Family history: Individual family genetics may affect your chances of getting fibroids. If your grandmother, mother, or sister had fibroids, you may too
Age: Fibroids generally first occur in women in their 30s. Fibroids often shrink and cause no symptoms in women who have gone through menopause.
Hormone levels: Fibroid growth seems to depend on estrogen or progesterone or perhaps both. Some studies show that fibroids are more likely to get smaller when estrogen levels go down (as they do after menopause).
Body weight: Some studies suggest that obesity might play a role in fibroid development. This is particularly important for fat women, who are 1.4 times more likely prone to fibroid
Childbirth: Studies have found that women who have delivered a baby are less likely to have fibroids. The risk probably goes down even more for women who have had two or more babies.
Lifestyle: Some studies have indicated that exercise and a healthy diet may lower the risk of fibroids, while studies have consistently shown that consumption of alcohol raises the risk.

FG moves closer to ending fuel supply & distribution problem- NNPC

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 08:43 AM PDT

Press statement from NNPC below...
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu has recommissioned the Escravos-Warri-Kaduna pipeline stressing that both Warri and Kaduna refineries are now receiving crude simultaneously for the first time in many years.
The Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mallam Garba Deen Muhammad in a press statement quoted Dr. Kachikwu as saying that Warri has started working while Kaduna will start production at the end of the month.

The Minister noted that this means that for the first time in many years, all the three refineries and major crude pipelines will be working at the same time.

Dr. Kachikwu stated that Escravos terminal is the heart beat of the downstream sector of the industry and critical to local supply of finished petroleum product as both refineries in Warri and Kaduna are majorly fed from Escravos crude stock.
"The challenge of this country is the challenge of focus and stewardship. For the first time in many years the three refineries are going to be working and it will help in a great deal with the issue of fuel supply and distribution across the country and it will go a long way to manage the fuel crisis,'' Dr. Kachikwu said.
He enjoined Nigerians to be more patient as the Corporation is working hard to end fuel shortage across the country.
"I appreciate the patients of Nigerians and I am committed and focused to make petrol available to all nooks and crannies of Nigeria," the Minister reassured.

I handed over a Nigeria that produced Africa's richest man – GEJ

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 08:38 AM PDT

Former President Jonathan has listed as one of his government's achievement, the emergence of a Nigerian, Aliko Dangote as Africa's Richest Man. Jonathan stated this while speaking to Friends of Africa Coalition at the office of the Mayor of the City of Newark in New Jersey on Thursday April 21
"I inherited a Nigeria in which the trains were not working, and handed over a Nigeria in which citizens can safely travel by trains again. I inherited a Nigeria that was a net importer of cement, and handed over a Nigeria that is a net exporter of cement.
In 2009 the richest Nigerian was the 5th richest man in Africa but I handed over a Nigeria that produced the richest man in Africa. These are but a few of the parameters that illustrate some of the economic transformations we engineered during my term in office. This was made possible by the fact that there was a stable political leadership in Nigeria that did not have to pander to any other constituency except the electorate who brought me to power. And these actions have a contagious effect."

Report/photos: Barack Obama used 3 helicopters, a vast motorcade and a modified jumbo jet to come to UK

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 05:26 AM PDT

According to a report by the Daily Mirror, U.S President Barack Obama will use 3 helicopters, a vast motorcade and a modified jumbo jet if he is to come to a city near you. The U.S President and his wife Michelle Obama are on a 3 day visit to the UK and the newspaper/website say that Obama 'has an entourage worthy of a pop diva with an inferiority complex.' Read their report after the cut..

'When the President's convoy arrives it's, well, an event. When he came through Parliament Square today, solice bikers with flashing blue lights started dripping through and blocking roads ahead of the President's car.'
Then the trickle gave way to a flood - about a dozen black cars with blacked-out windows and blue flashing lights raced past. They were joined by five minibuses carrying members of White House staff and the US press.
'The biggest baddest limo is saved for the President - so naturally it's called The Beast. It's the right name for a 'tank with windows' that has doors eight inches thick and can withstand a chemical attack.'
'There are actually said to be a dozen of the custom-built moving fortresses in service, and two were spotted this time in the Presidential motorcade. It has seven seats, Kevlar-reinforced run-flat tyres, a driver with top secret service training, a foam-coated explosion-proof engine and blood of the President's type on board.'
Needless to say it's not very eco-friendly. Experts at AutoWeek claimed it does just 3.7 miles to the gallon. There was no taking the train through Essex when Mr Obama touched down at Stansted Airport.
Waiting for him was his Presidential helicopter Marine One, which he uses regularly to take trips within the US. When he visited Windsor Castle today the aerial entourage was even bigger .
A second helicopter carried the President's aides - while a third ferried around members of the US press corps. Those happy moments on the doorstep with David Cameron don't just happen by magic.'
They take the preparation of a huge network of staff, and reports for the number travelling with the President usually run into the hundreds. We have asked the White House exactly how many people are travelling with Mr Obama this time.
How could we forget Air Force One?
No trip would be complete without the President descending the steps of his modified version of a Boeing 747. Its beige interiors include a lounge with two sofas, a workout room, toilet, shower, vanity unit and double sink. It even has a TV studio so he can address the nation from the skies.
That's not to mention at least one separate Air Force transport plane which takes that motorcade  around the world. It's certainly impressed our Prime Minister, who's getting his own £10m Con Air jet n future.
With all those planes and helicopters, the Transport Secretary has had to enact flying restrictions as part of Presidential security.Drones have been banned completely from most of London and the surrounding area between 9pm on Thursday and 11am on Sunday.'
Restrictions were also in place for the skies between Windsor and London while the Obamas went for lunch at Windsor Castle. And they applied on the route to and from Stansted Airport, where Air Force One is parked.
Those outriders, PCs and armed officers, whose duties include security sweeps at Windsor Castle and Downing Street, don't come for free. Scotland Yard wouldn't tell us today how much it is due to spend on President Obama's current visit. But a previous visit by President Bush in 2003 cost £4.1million because it attracted a big protest against the Iraq War.
'Policing the G20 summit in London in 2009 cost £7.4million.

How Nigeria is Using Comic Books to Teach History

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 05:00 AM PDT

In a village somewhere in Nigeria, students bicker over the origins of one of the country's major ethnic groups, until a wise old man intervenes with a story from Nigeria's past. So begins a tale from "Okiojo's Chronicles," a comic book series that explores the history of the many ethnic groups that make up Africa's most-populous nation. It is a history the creators of the series fear is at risk of being distorted or ignored altogether.

Art: Sunkanmi Akinboye & Colors: Harriet Ekwueme/Okiojo's Chronicles)

Comic books and graphic novels may play a key role in Nigeria, a country torn by sectarian violence and a commodity-reliant economy damaged by the dropping price of oil. Recent changes in the national curriculum mean many schools no longer offer history class. And while Nigerian authors churn out memoirs and novels that line bookshelves in the country and around the world, Nigeria boasts only a handful of historians who write for the average reader.
Oriteme Banigo, the creator of "Okiojo's Chronicles," says he fears for the future of the country if its young people don't learn about Nigeria's past.
"If you just look at the past, if you look at when we started democracy, we seem to be making the same mistakes over and over again," says Banigo. "In our stories we emphasize ... why this has happened, why we should remember it, and how we could stop ourselves from going through the same issues moving forward."
Of the three comics released so far, two have delved into the origins of the Yoruba and Hausa peoples, both major ethnic groups.
A third depicted the subjugation of the Benin Empire in present-day southern Nigeria by British colonists, which is still controversial because the colonizers took hundreds of bronze plaque artworks back to Europe, where many remain to this day.
Tunji Anjorin, editor-in-chief of the series, says the goal is to chronicle the histories of every single ethnic group in Nigeria.
"A 10-year-old who grows up reading 'Okiojo's Chronicles' for 10 years would have read 40 different ethnic groups comics and he would have a better understanding of the people who are left and right to him and [of] Nigeria as a whole," says Anjorin.
The country today is facing major upheavals in its political and economic landscape, but many of these challenges are familiar to Nigerians. The president, Muhammadu Buhari, is a retired general who older Nigerians remember for his brief rule as a military dictator in the 1980s.
The economic health of Nigeria, Africa's top producer of crude, has long been tied to the price of oil. With prices in a slump, Buhari's new government is facing a drying-up of government revenues along with pressure to devalue the currency, all challenges faced by prior administrations.
Demonstrators have taken to the streets in the country's southeast with calls for the return of Biafra, a separatist republic that has not existed since it was defeated and reabsorbed back into Nigeria at the end of the country's civil war in 1970.
To historian Max Siollun, events like the Biafra protests are evidence of why Nigeria should place more value on the study of its past.

"There tends to be a lack of sophistication and political debate, a lack of empathy for the other side in Nigeria, born out of not knowing the history, not knowing the historical grievances that drive the other side," says Siollun.

But Nigeria's officialdom gives history short shrift.
While researching the two books he has authored on Nigeria's oil trade and military leaders, Siollun says many former government officials and political elites were reluctant to talk, perhaps out of fear of offending the powerful.
He often relied on newspaper archives and government files that were in the archives of foreign countries.
Nigerian students gain little knowledge of history from school, says Bayo Olupohunda, a secondary school teacher and newspaper columnist. Just two years ago, a new curriculum came into effect that merged history education with civics classes.
"They just teach it in passing. It's not something that is taught holistically, as a subject," Olupohunda says.
At his school, Olupohunda says students forsake liberal arts for subjects that are seen to lead to a lucrative career. "We live in a seriously capitalist system where people tend to have preference for financial course, commercial courses."
With history education in classrooms scarce and few popular history books on the shelves of bookstores, Siollun says most young people learn about the country's past from their parents or family – which he says can lead to a skewed perspective on events that remain controversial in Nigeria today.

The creators of "Okiojo's Chronicles" aren't alone in seeing comics as a way to spur Nigerians' interest in their own history.

Writer and illustrator Abraham Oshoko has released two installments of his five-part "June 12" graphic novel series, which dramatizes the events surrounding a cancelled election and military coup of the 1990s.

"All over the world the reading culture has died down," Oshoko says. "Using illustrations to tell stories becomes more appealing."

But writing about the annulled election, which was held on the date in 1993 that serves at the series' title, hasn't been easy. The election remains such a controversial topic that a shipment of the most recent installment of Oshoko's series was briefly seized by Nigeria's secret police when it was published in 2013.

Despite the seizure, and problems getting bookstores to pay for copies they sold, Oshoko says he's committed to finishing the series.

"I believe that when Nigerians understand [their] own history, we're going to begin to regain that nationalistic spirit that we no longer have now," says Oshoko.
"Okiojo's Chronicles" has set a comparatively brisk pace for itself.
Anjorin says their goal is to produce one comic book each quarter for each of Nigeria's ethnic groups, estimated to be more than 250. It should only take about 62 years to chronicle them all.

Photos: Distribution of relief items to the people of Buni Yadi who returned 2 years after Boko Haram took over the town

Posted: 23 Apr 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Residents of Buni Yadi, a community in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, returned home on April 16, two years after fleeing their town due to series of attacks from Boko Haram terrorists. On Friday, a National Logistics Committe set up by Customs to coordinate the transfer of seized goods in its Warehouses to IDP Camps in the North East and other places, arrived the town to distribute relief materials to the IDPs.

According to the Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Sanusi Umar, following a Presidential Mandate,
"a National Logistics Committee was set up by Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd), to coordinate the transfer of seized goods in Customs Warehouses to IDP Camps in the North East and other places. Membership of Committee comprises Representatives from the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, and NAFDAC. We also had members from Civil Society Organization like the Red Cross and the Media.Through the partnership with these agencies, we have benefited from effective collaboration that ensured smooth operation. We must register our appreciation to all these agencies for their contribution towards this National assignment".
The National Logistics Committee on the distribution of Relief items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) made a stop-over in Damaturu,Yobe State. On arrival, the Committee headed to the State House to brief the Governor and State officials on the mandate of the Committee.

The State Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Abubakar Ali, received the Committee on behalf of the Governor. The Committee, led by the Deputy Governor proceeded to Buni-Yadi to distribute relief materials to the people who have suffered untold hardship.

Below is the remarks by Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, presented by the Commander, 79 Composite Group, Nigeria Air Force, Maiduguri, Air Commodore Paul Dimfina at the ceremony:

"It gives me great pleasure to be here in continuation of the intervention programme put in place by the Federal Government of Nigeria to assist our fellow Nigerians displaced by the insurgency crisis in the last 5 years.
2. Today's event is therefore in fulfilment of a Presidential Mandate given to the Comptroller-General of Customs to transfer items seized by the Customs and legally forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria for the use of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in various camps across the North-East.
3. In the first phase of its operation in Yobe, the Committee has transferred the following items for its intervention programme.
i. RICE (50KG) 4,491 Bags
ii. VEG. OIL (25 LTRS) 2,504 Jerry cans
 iii. SOAP 500 Cartons
 iv. USED CLOTHS 263 Bales
 v. NEW CLOTHS (WRAP/BEDSHT) 297 Pieces
vi. TEXTILE YARD MATERIAL 41 Rolls
 vii. BRANDED WRAPPER 200 Pieces
 viii. SPAGHETTI 431 Cartons
ix. FOOTWEAR 250 Cartons & Bags
 x. MOSQUITO COIL 527 Cartons
xi. SUGAR 20 Cartons & Bags
4. Your Excellencies, it is gladdening to note the current trend of IDPs leaving the designated Camps back to the communities. This is a testimony to the fact that Nigeria is winning the war on insurgents, and peace is being restored to the North-East.
5. This intervention should therefore be seen as laying foundation for full relocation of the displaced persons to their communities. It is our hope that with the coming of the raining season, our citizens in the liberated territories will engage in agriculture and other activities to re-engineer our economic revival.
6. On our part, we must express our appreciation to Mr. President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his support to the on-going operations to rid our dear country of insurgents wherever they may be. We like to assure Nigerians that we are committed to the onerous task of restoring peace to North-East, and lay a solid foundation for economic regeneration.
7. I also want to use this opportunity to urge returning IDPs to remain vigilant and report all suspicious activities to the Law Enforcement Agents.
8. Your Excellencies, on behalf of the National Committee, I hereby present these relief materials for the use of Internally Displaced Persons in Yobe State. Thank you"

The speech of the State Governor was read by the Deputy –Governor, Engr. Abubakar Ali:
"Let me also bring to the attention of this gathering that the current priority of the State Government is to ensure the restoration of the basic facilities in the areas to which the IDPs have returned or to facilitate their return. Already, the sum of about N20 million has been expended to rehabilitate water facilities in nine towns and villages including Katarko, Gujba, Goniri and Buni-Gari among others. Here in Buni-Yadi, with the current influx of people back to town, the immediate need of the people apart from food is provision of water and health facilities. The State Government is gearing towards the provision of these basic infrastructures to the town very soon. The rehabilitation of other facilities like health, schools, electricity and administrative buildings demand much more funds with Buni-Yadi alone estimated to cost more than N400 million"
