13 planes mysteriously vanish from radars in Europe for 25mins in 'unprecedented' incident

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 09:19 AM PDT

A total of 13 aircraft suddenly vanished off radars for about 25 minutes on two occasions while flying over Austria, it has been revealed.

In what is being billed as 'unprecedented' circumstances, the incidents on June 5 and yesterday saw the flight data disappear from air controller screens.

Austria's flight safety organisation admitted that the height, location and other information for a total of 13 aircraft mysteriously vanished from radars. It is believed that some of the planes were long-haul flights carrying passengers on board. Continue...

Markus Pohanka, a spokesman for Austro Control, said relevant EU agencies have been asked to investigate the 'unprecedented' situation.

He added that other unnamed neighbouring countries had similar incidents and the EU's Eurocontrol, and European Aviation Safety Agency has been asked for a probe.

Pohanka did not identify the other nations that the European flights were flying over when they disappeared from secondary surveillance radars.

However, a report in the Kurier newspaper said as well as in Vienna in Austria, flight controllers in Munich and Karlsruhe in Germany, and in Prague, the Czech Republic, and Bratislava in Slovakia also reported related problems.

The report said German air traffic control had confirmed the black outs, adding that the reason there were no collisions was due to the air traffic controllers.
It could have had dramatic consequences, as 4,000 planes take to the sky in Austria every day - with 50 in the air at any one time, according to the report.

Air traffic was conducted 'blind' - by voice only - during the temporary outage, it claimed.
The revelations echo the circumstances surrounding missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing which disappeared on March 8.

The Boeing 777 - with 239 passengers and crew on board - vanished from civilian radar screens about an hour into the night flight.

The search for the flight - which involves countries including the UK, the US, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand - has so far recovered nothing.
In relation to the 13 missing flights about Europe, Kurier cited unnamed experts as saying interference between the aircrafts' transponders and ground control was apparently to blame.

Pohanka declined to confirm that or to say which airlines and planes were involved.
But he suggested that at least some may have been long-distance passenger aircraft, based on their high altitudes.
There was no danger at any time, he said.
Pohanka said extra air controllers immediately were called to their posts and emergency measures, including establishing voice contact with the pilots and widening flight corridors, were put into effect.
The EU's Eurocontrol and European Aviation Safety Agency will investigate the incidents.

Pohanka said that safety in the Austrian air space was guaranteed at all times.

He told MailOnline Travel: 'There is no situation in aviation where there is not another procedure that takes place. We noticed that some of the responder data sent from the plane to the ground disappeared for a short period of time from the radar screens. That is the reason why the contingency procedures were put into place. Voice communication guaranteed that we knew everything about the planes in Austrian air space and allowed air traffic controllers to do their jobs. Distance between aircraft was increased.'

When asked what had caused the black out, Pohanka said no error was indicated on the operating system, but they would have to wait to hear the results of the investigation.

This pig ain't ready to die. A motorist behind a delivery truck transporting pigs to a slaughterhouse in South America filmed one pig leaping out of the truck to save itself. First its head pops up, then it manages to prize its body to the surface, leaps overboard at high-speed, rolls to the ground, picks itself up and walks into the bushes to freedom.

The video of the incident was released on June 11th and has gone viral. One viewer wrote "I love pork, but he obviously deserves amnesty for his bravery". I agree. See more photos after the cut...

Swipha: Journey to WHO GMP Certification

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 09:59 AM PDT

Swiss pharma Nigeria Limited (swipha) manufactures and marketspharmaceutical products that meet international standards.  Swipha also distributes products of other international pharmaceutical companies like: Bayer AG, Germany (OTC Products) BIO-STRATH AG., Switzerland amongst others.

Swipha has been in Nigeria since 1976 and has been supplying drugs to Federal Ministry of Health, State Governments and Parastatals. Continue..

Swipha also sells to the private sector and many of her products are household names in Nigeria.  All the products manufactured in her plant at No. 5, Dopemu Road Agege, Lagos are subject to current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) for Quality Control.

Swipha has always been in the forefront of quality in her systems, processes and products.  In 1993 swipha embarked upon a companywide implementation of Total Quality Management ( TQM) as part of her continual quality improvement.  This strategic move helped to entrench quality as a culture in the organization. The effect of this on the performance of the company was remarkable.  As time went by the Management of swisspharma Nigeria Limited(swipha) decided to embark upon ISO:2000 QMS Certification for her Quality Management System.  This was at a time that many other companies made do with basic quality standards.

In the year 2004, swipha became the first in the Pharmaceutical Industry in Nigeria to attain this certification which further entrenched her leadership in quality systems and products.

By then swipha has built an enviable reputation of quality which was acclaimed by professionals in the healthcare delivery system of the country.

Buoyed by the attainment of the ISO 9001:2000 QMS Certification, swipha went ahead to obtain a higher version of the certification which is NIS ISO 9001:2008.

Swipha developed a corporate philosophy that nothing being done is "too good" that it cannot be improved upon.  Recognizing that change is a constant thing in life, swipha braced up for higher challenges.

About this time, many Global Donor Agencies were procuring pharmaceutical commodities from Europe.  These were deployed to many countries of which Nigeria was one.  However, proposals sent to some of these agencies soliciting  patronage by swipha were not granted on the basis that they source products only from WHO GMP Certified companies.  At that time only two companies in Africa were so certified.  Swipha saw this as a challenge.

In 2006 the Management of swissPharma Nigeria Limited (swipha) decided to pursue WHO Prequalification for her Anti-malarial product – DART (the first of its class to be produced in Nigeria).  Then Nigeria had just launched a new Treatment Policy Guideline (2005) for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria which did away with the first line products (Chloroquine and Sulphadoxine/Pyrimethamine).  Also, all monotherapies were to be dropped.  On her own volition, swipha discontinued the production of her then newly introduced anti-malarial (ARENAX 50mg) which was also the first of its class to be manufactured in Nigeria.

From then on, a flurry of activities and projects followed.  In 2008 a major modification/modernization of swipha's manufacturing factory/laboratory commenced.  This led to a complete redesigning and upgrading of the plant and lab to modern internationally acceptable standards.  The company also embarked on acquisition of modern machines and laboratory equipment to complement the new factory.

At this point, the company had to engage international consultants to carry out preparatory third party audits with WHO pre-qualification in view.  This, as can be imagined , was a slow but steady push as the company was going it all alone in a resource poor environment.

This was the situation until 2012 when the leadership of NAFDAC in collaboration with PMG-MAN convinced the WHO to initiate a new concept which was piloted in Nigeria for the organization of GMP Inspections as a follow up of Technical Assistance.

This concept involves organizations of pre-submission of  GMP Audits by WHO Pre-qualification team  (WHOPQT) Inspectors to verify status of compliance achieved during previous Technical Assistance, although completion of data to be submitted for pre-qualification in line with international standards is still ongoing.

Swipha was selected as one of the eight companies in Nigeria shortlisted for a GAP Analysis to ascertain the level of compliance to the WHO cGMP standards based on initial evaluation of her Site Master File.

This heralded series of Advisory Audits by NAFDAC to further enhance compliance to WHO cGMP standards and preparedness for the final WHO cGMPInspction which took place in April 2013.  A further verification inspection was carried  out in October  2013. By this time, most of the identified GAPS (Non-Conformances) has been closed.  It is important to note that throughout the inspection and close out of GAPS, no critical observation (defined as a major violaton of GMP Standard or Guideline) was observed.

The other remaining non-conformances were closed out and further verified by NAFDAC in February, 2014.

On April 2, 2014 the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared swipha's Manufacturing and Laboratory Facility as being compliant to the WHO cGMP.

This brought to a temporary end the"journey of a thousand miles" and placed swipha (and indeed Nigeria) on the world map as the First company in West Africa to be so acknowledged.

This feat is indeed an attestation to swipha's commitment to quality.  It has further instilled more confidence in the consumers with regards to the products manufactured by swipha.  It is therefore expected that swipha's products will be patronized more than ever before.

A window of opportunity is also opened for quality conscious international donor agencies and governments to procure from a Nigerian Pharmaceutical Company drugs intended for use in Nigeria and Africa.

Swipha's drive for export is further boosted as her reputation now goes beyond Nigeria.  Equally contract manufacturing business for multinationals which swipha had been hitherto engage in is expected to increase in volume and numbers.

Indeed the journey holds a lot of promise as swipha is determined to remain a top quality key player in the industry.

LASU students reject school fees reduction by Governor Fashola

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 03:32 AM PDT

Lagos state University students have rejected Governor Fashola's proposed 34% and 60% across the different faculties and courses reduction in school fees.
At a press conference held yesterday June 12th in Ogba, the President of LASU Student Union Government, Nurudeen Yusuf, said the state government should spell out the proposed new fees in Naira and Kobo rather than this percentage as their parents who are responsible for the payments do not know how to calculate in percentage.
"We do not accept the 34 to 60% reduction of the government because in 2011 when the fees were increased, it was not done on percentage level; rather, they made the pronouncement in Naira and Kobo. We urge the government to come out in words as to how much will be paid by our students in Naira and Kobo and not in percentage. How do they expect our parents, the market women scrambling to pay our fees, to calculate the percentage? The government is only trying to play games with our future. We question their sincerity on this matter because the pronouncement of the fee was as a result of a visitation panel set up by the government of which the report was selectively adopted" Yusuf said

RMD reacts to bad health rumour, says I'm in th best shape of my life

Posted: 13 Jun 2014 01:13 AM PDT

There have been rumours both online and on entertainment magazines that Nollywood icon and Delta State Commissioner for Culture & Tourism, Richard Mofe-Damijo, has health issues probably because of his recent weight loss. I saw him a while back and he looked more handsome than ever!

Anyway, RMD has reacted to the rumours, saying he's better than ever.
"What else do you need? You saw me on stage, did I look sick? People are probably so disappointed to see me looking so much better they want the news to be true. Unfortunately for them, I am in the best shape of my life.
"Have you not taken photos of me. It amazes me how people cling to bad news. I am a public servant in Delta State, I go to work every day. I am not sick. I changed my lifestyle and lost weight and I am looking better than I have ever looked in my adult life. For the records, I am not on Facebook and my colleagues that they used their names as those who posted the stories have all denied it."RMD told Weekend Groove
