'We did not ban Abuja protests' - Nigerian Police say

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 09:06 AM PDT

The Nigerian Police Headquarters has issued a statement saying they didn't ban any protests in Abuja. According to a statement signed by CSP Frank Mba, what was issued yesterday by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu was only an advisory notice and not a ban. Find the statement below.
The Police High Command wishes to inform the general public that the Force has not issued any order banning peaceful assemblies/protests anywhere in Nigeria. It notes however that against the backdrop of current security challenges in the country, coupled with a recent intelligence report of a likely infiltration and hijack of otherwise innocuous and peaceful protests by some criminal elements having links with insurgents, the Police only issued advisory notice, enjoining citizens to apply caution in the said rallies, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.
Reminding citizens of the earlier position of the Force on peaceful rallies, which the Police High Command regards as the constitutional and democratic rights of Nigerians, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, M D. Abubakar, CFR, NPM, mni, psc, stresses the need for the organizers of such rallies to ensure that they seek proper advice and guidance from the Police before engaging in any such exercise so as to avoid any unpleasant circumstances. The IGP calls on the general public to see the present position of the Force as a necessary sacrifice for the peace our nation needs, as security is a collective responsibility.

Consequently, citizens are strongly advised to reconsider their positions on the issues of rallies and protests in FCT until the existing threats are appropriately neutralized and removed from our midst by relevant security agencies.

Meanwhile, the IGP reassures citizens of the commitment of the Force to the protection of lives and property and advancing the course of democracy in Nigeria.

Is this picture proof that unborn babies feel mother's stress?

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 05:51 AM PDT

Found this interesting report on UK Daily Mail about unborn babies and the effect a mother's stress can have on them. Read below...
It ought to be the most tranquil of sights – the face of an unborn child in  the womb. But the tiny hand pulled up to the chin reveals that, upsettingly, this baby appears to be under stress. The remarkable image was taken as part of a study showing unborn children touch their faces more often if their mother has been anxious, helpless or under pressure.
Researchers believe they are picking up on her anxieties – and then trying to soothe them away with the power of touch. As adults, we do this by holding our head in our hands. But while we use both hands, babies of stressed-out mothers preferred the touch of just one.
Although previous studies have found babies pick up on stress in the womb, this is believed to be the first to offer  photographic evidence.

Researcher Nadja Reissland from Durham University gave 15 mothers-to-be 4D ultrasound scans four times during their pregnancy.

Rather than the grainy, 'flat' images produced by the 2D scanners usually used by the NHS, a 4D machine stitches together pictures taken from a variety of angles to create clear three-dimensional pictures.

These are then recorded on video – the fourth dimension.

The mothers-to-be were quizzed on their  levels of stress in the month leading up to each scan and the videos were analysed to see how often the unborn babies touched their faces. In total, the eight girls and seven boys did so 342 times.

The more anxious the woman was, the more the unborn child mopped its brow, the journal Laterality: Asymmetries of Body, Brain and Cognition reported. Dr Reissland believes that the babies were picking up on an increase in the stress hormone cortisol being  produced by their mothers.

The study also found those whose mothers had been under pressure were more likely to use their left hand when touching their face.

This is significant because attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, depression and schizophrenia all more common in people who are left-handed.
Dr Reissland said: 'Most mothers are fine and needn't worry but some will need to think about reducing their stress.'

'BH attack is because GEJ won an election & some people are angry about it' - Okupe

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 05:44 AM PDT

Senior Special Adviser to President Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe was a guest on BBC's Hardtalk this morning where he spoke about the increasing state of insurgency in Nigeria.
Addressing a question on allegations that everyday dozens of bodies are being  transferred from the military headquarters prison called Dubar and deposited at a hospital in Maiduguri with the bodies showing signs of torture and brutality, he replied that the Nigerian Government and the military is suffering from an orchestrated plan to cause disaffection, alleging that people who are angry with the fact that Pres. Goodluck Jonathan won an election are doing everything within their power to fight his government. What he said below...
"You do not understand the holistic problem of Nigeria. President Jonathan has committed an offense. His major offense is that he won an election when some people in Nigeria, very strong and powerful feel that he ought not to have won and power ought not to be where it is currently resident. So people want to take this power by all means, at all cost, playing all sorts of gimmicks and all and they have a lot of money and a lot of influence both within Nigeria and outside Nigeria" he said. Continue...
On the idea that Boko Haram's increased activities in Northern Nigeria is as a result of high level of poverty, Okupe agreed, stating that it is because of prolonged neglect occasioned by past government.
"If you ask any objective Nigerian, they would tell you this is as a result of longstanding neglect by various governments, not the present administration because this government is only three years old"

'We don't have a television industry in Nigeri'a' - Funmi Iyanda

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 05:11 AM PDT

Exceptionally brilliant TV personality Funmi Iyanda says there's no television industry in Nigeria. In an interview with Encomium mag at her Children's Day Celebration party organized by her "Change a Life Foundation", she spoke about her current engagements...
"I run two media companies. One in Lagos, the second in London. I don't do television in Nigeria again because we don't have a television industry and I don't want to do patronage media otherwise known as brown envelope media. That's why I have shifted that to London and me and my partners are working on films that can be seen by anybody anywhere in the world. Back in Nigeria, I do corporate projects. I have people on the ground and we choose what we work on. So I run my business as a professional. I run Change-A-Life as a founder because it has a board and staff that keep things going. I am glad that it has taken a life beyond me" she said. Continue...
She also talked  about how she ventured into film making since her background is not in films
"I don't need to know anything about film-making but I am a great manager of people and a very intelligent person. One of the challenges here is that we put people in boxes. So often times, they put me in boxes. What you saw me doing on NTA was what I could do, because I was censored into the format that I did on NTA. That's not the kind of journalist I could be. I was operating at 20% capacity. I don't want to die without operating at 100% capacity. So this is me moving towards my full capacity. I said I run the company, I didn't say I make the films. I have with me scriptwriters, directors. What I love about film-making is that you coordinate and organize talents so that you bring forth what's good. One of the things I do in London is to produce stories that showcase Nigerian cultures" she said

Rob Kardashian unfollows everyone on twitter except for his mum & one sister

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 04:20 AM PDT

Minus the fact that he doesn't seem to be at a good place in his life right now...with the weight issues and all...Rob is also not feeling everyone in his family at the moment. The reality star has deleted everyone he's following on twitter, except for two people, his mum and his youngest sister, Kylie. He's stopped following Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Kendell and even his pal and in-law, Scott Dissick.

Recall he missed his sister Kim's wedding to Kanye and there are reports that Khloe is mad at him for resuming his friendship with her ex, Lamar Odom. Guess he's trying to send a message to his family.

Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola makes $398million in 90 days

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 01:44 AM PDT

According to Forbes Africa, billionaire businessman Femi Otedola made $398million between March 3 to June 2. #Ojigbijigbijigbithings. Hehe. See their report below
Nigerian energy mogul Femi Otedola has become at least $398 million richer between March 3 and June 2 as shares of Forte Oil PLC, a Nigerian Stock Exchange-listed energy distributor, surged 167% in that period.
Forte Oil PLC is primarily engaged in the distribution of petroleum products such as diesel, aviation fuel and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The company has over 500 company-owned, dealer-assisted and dealer-developed gas stations spread across the country, oil storage depots in Lagos and Rivers states, a Power plant and a Joint User Hydrant Installation facility in Lagos. The company also sells its own range of automobile lubricants.
On March 3, the company's stock was trading at N88.4 ($0.55), and at the close of trading today (Monday), its share price was N235.79 ($1.46). According to Akinbamidele Akintola, Vice President, Africa equity sales at Renaissance Capital, the recent unprecedented demand and surge in Forte Oil's shares may not be unconnected to the company's recent inclusion in the Morgan Stanley MS +0.13% Capital International (MSCI ) Frontier Market 100 Index. Listing in such indexes usually attracts interest from global investors who track these companies.

Otedola became the largest shareholder in Forte Oil (formerly called African Petroleum) in 2007 when he acquired a 28.7% stake in the company from the government-owned oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for $120 million. He subsequently appointed himself as chairman of the company. Otedola, 47, has gobbled up additional shares over the years and now owns more than 40% of the $1.5 billion (Market Capitalization) company. According to information available from registrar sources, he currently owns 436,809,537 shares valued at N103 billion ($635 million). He pocketed at least $11 million in dividends from profits made by his company in February as Forte Oil paid shareholders a dividend of N4 ($0.0023) per ordinary share from its 2013 profits. A representative for Femi Otedola could not be reached for comment at press time.

The worst yet? Rihanna attends fashion show in see-through sheer dress

I think the reason she gets away with this easily is because she's one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Imagine if it were a reality star, struggling singer, upcoming actress or video vixen dressing this way, people will be too quick to call her trash. Not impressed with this dress.

The singer wore this see through custom-made shear embellished halter dress by Adam Selman to the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards yesterday. The dress is embellished with 216,000 Swarovski crystals and she rocked it with a matching sparkly turban. She wore a flesh colored thong to cover her herself up but had no bra on.
