| 60 girls reportedly been kidnapped in Kummabza village, Borno state Posted: 23 Jun 2014 12:19 PM PDT   About sixty girls between the ages of 3-12 years have been abducted by insurgents in Kummabza village of Damboa local government area of Borno State. Reports from the area indicates that the insurgents also killed about thirty people and destroyed property worth millions of naira during an attack on the community, residents of the village are taking refuge in Lassa and Gulak in Adamawa State. They appealed to the authorities to provide them with shelter and relief materials to reduce their sufferings. Further updates to be provided as soon as we have them. |

| 2face Idibia slams N100million lawsuit against Icon magazine for libel Posted: 23 Jun 2014 06:50 AM PDT   In March this year, Icon alleged that 2face committed adultery by impregnating a 'Lagos top banker' who is supposedly his account officer in one of the new generation banks and that infact, the lady had every intention of keeping the baby. The story went viral, which 2face later denied. A source close to the music icon said the story, which was found to be false, made 2face lose a very lucrative deal and caused ripples between him and his wife. Icon weekly is said to have approached 2face's team for discussions on a possible out of court settlement. |

| Egypt sentences 3 Al-Jazeera journalists to 7 years imprisonment Posted: 23 Jun 2014 06:16 AM PDT  Three Al-Jazeera journalists, Peter Greste (correspondent, Australian), bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy (Canadian/Egyptian) have been sentenced to 7 years in prison each over allegations of false reporting and association with the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. While a 3rd journalist, Baher Mohamed (producer) was given 10 years for same charges and also for being in possession of ammunition. The three journalists were arrested in December 2013 after security forces raided their work suite office in Cairo on charges of 'spreading false news' and holding meetings with Muslim Brotherhood. The journalists had reported on how Egyptian security agencies killed hundreds of peaceful protesters in sit-ins in Cairo. This was when Egyptians took to the streets to protest the coup by the army that removed former Egyptian president, Mohammed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood from power in July 2013 and demanding for his reinstatement. The arrest of the three journalist last year raised international concerns with powerful world leaders including the UN Secretary General, Ban kin Moon, calling for their release by the Egyptian govt. But instead of releasing them, they've been found guilty and sentenced. Six other Al-Jazeera journalists - Alaa Bayoumi, Anas Abdel-Wahab Khalawi Hasan, Khaleel Aly Khaleel Bahnasy, Mohamed Fawzi, Dominic Kane, and Sue Turton were tried in absentia and handed 10 years in prison verdicts. |
| Suicide bomber kills 3 soldiers in Borno, Boko Haram kills 40 in new attack Posted: 23 Jun 2014 04:23 AM PDT  Three soldiers were reportedly killed yesterday June 22nd after a suicide bomber suspected to be from the Boko Haram sect attacked a military post near a Secondary school in Gwoza, Borno state. Vanguard reports the suicide bomber drove through Wala and Warabe villages before getting to the military post where the bomb detonated and a loud sound immediately followed, with the vehicle the suicide bomber rode in and other things in the attack scene destroyed. One of the residents of the area, Mallam Usman Yaro who spoke with Vanguard said residents of the area were still asleep when the bomb detonated. Continue..

| Heroic 13yr old Nigerian boy dies after trying to save a drowning girl Posted: 23 Jun 2014 04:03 AM PDT   According to Irish Mirror, a friend of Ricky's, a teenage girl, got into the water and was almost drowning when Ricky and another female friend jumped into the pond to try to save her. The other teen girl who jumped in to help also now had difficulties in the pond, and it was up to Ricky to save both girls. Which he did. Paramedics were called and all three teens were taken to the hospital. The two girls survived, but Ricky died the next day. Ricky Osagie was a teenage soccer sensation whose dream was to represent Ireland, his distraught father, Kelly Osagie told the Sunday Irish Mirror. He said Ricky was a hero because he knew he was risking his life when he went into the water as he couldn't swim. "He was trying to help someone else.That's what happened. My son died a hero. He went in and then that was it. My son is gone but a girl is alive because of him. He always smiled and was happy all the time. He was such a fantastic footballer. We have trophies everywhere in the house. Ricky was going to play for Ireland, that's what he said he was going to do. He had so many friends. He is a hero, a real hero. I want the world to know what my son did. He was a man."He really is a hero! Rest in peace 'lil man. Such a sad story! |
