| 2 women jailed 5 months each for slapping a police man in Abuja Posted: 18 Jun 2014 01:37 PM PDT  The women had also been charged with using abusive language and public nuisance. Malam Aminu Sa'ad, the presiding judge, handed down the sentence after the women pleaded guilty to the three-count charge of criminal force and assault, use of abusive language and public nuisance. Sa'ad ruled that on the first count of criminal force and assault, the convicts shall serve a jail term of one month each without an option of fine. Continue... He, however, gave them an option of N20,000 fine each for the other two counts charge including the use of abusive language and public nuisance, and declared the terms would run consecutively. Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Momoh Ibrahim, had told the court that on June 14, 2014, the convicts were arrested for using insulting language on the person of a police officer, one Cpl. Abraham Omageni of Deidei police station. Ibrahim said the convicts also slapped Omageni. The prosecutor told the court that their offences contravened the provisions of the Penal Code. | OAU shut down following days of students' protest over school fees Posted: 18 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT   The school administration this afternoon released a statement announcing an indefinite shutdown of the institution and ordered students to vacate its premises by Thursday afternoon, citing 'persistent disruption of normal activities and peace on campus as a result of violent demonstrations by students, led by the Student Union Executive' as their reason for shutting down the school. "Consequently, all students are directed to vacate their Halls of Residence and the University premises immediately and not later than 12 noon on Thursday, 19th June, 2014. Parents are hereby enjoined to ensure that their children/wards comply with this directive immediately." the statement read. |

Sean Tizzle was a handful as he used his gift and stage craft to hold the audience spell-bound leaving no one in doubt that he is made for greater things. The crowd comprising largely students of the two tertiary institutions in the ancient city was pleased by the MTN brand ambassador. One of the students at the concert expressed his satisfaction with the young artiste's performance saying, 'Sean Tizzle is more in tune with the desire of the youths and I'm happy to see him perform live'. Chidinma Ekile, the 'Kedike' crooner delivered a gusto performance. She started by urging a minute silence for the singer, Keffe, who was reported dead that morning. The mood occasioned by the departed songstress gave way for a lively and engaging performance by the petite songstress. The icing on the cake were performances by D'Prince and Sound Sultan. D'Prince was hilarious. He exemplified what every Mavin act epitomises: stage craft and energy. Sound Sultan showed up with his full band. They were a marvel all through the night. There were great performances from Project Fame's past contestants such as Adetoun and Omolayo. The two lived up to their rising profile: the former as the 'next Waka Queen', the latter, the next classical music biggest artiste. Meanwhile, the auditions to select a new batch of contestants for this year's Project Fame academy also took place in the city, precisely at Kwara Hotel. Hundreds of youth trooped out to audition for the reality show. Also in Abuja, report has it that the audition staged in the nation's capital was well attended. It was reported that an enthusiastic youth population came in droves to exhibit their talents for a chance to be famous and rich. The next auditions will take place in Port Harcourt and Ibadan. That will be a week from now. The next concert will be held in Lagos, exactly two weeks from the last concert in Ilorin. The venue is the LTV Lagos premises. According to the organisers, it promises to be fun with MTN ambassadors and Project Fame past contestants in attendance.           |

| FG drops N100b stolen funds charges against Mohammed Abacha Posted: 18 Jun 2014 05:30 AM PDT  The Federal Government today Wednesday June 18th withdrew the corruption charges filed against Mohammed Abacha, son of former military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. Mohammed who played a major role during his late father's administration is believed to have helped the late dictator launder a lot of stolen funds. The FG had accused Mohammed Abacha of receiving stolen property worth N100.38 billion, many of it kept in foreign countries. The Federal government recently asked the US govt to return another $500 million recently frozen by the U.S. as part of funds stolen by the late dictator. |

| Photo: 60-year old Nigerian woman gives birth through IVF Posted: 18 Jun 2014 04:52 AM PDT  60 year old Mrs Omolara Irurhe (pictured above) who had been looking of a child for over 30 years reportedly gave birth to a baby girl this past Monday June 16th through the Invitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment at a Specialist Hospital in Lagos. The Nation reports that Mrs Irurhe, who has been married for 31 years, started the IVF treatment in 2010 and said her faith in God and her believe in modern medicine helped her go through the process, after many years of childlessness in marriage. She said her husband, Mr Adekunle Irurhe's Catholic belief of one man one wife made him not to marry another woman and stood by her through all the years. An elated Mr Adekunle Irurhe said though there were pressures to get another wife, he was determined to stay with his wife alone as that was the practice of his own parents. He said his wife's belief in the In vitro fertilization method made him support her.
Mrs Irurhe has made history as the oldest woman in Africa to give birth to a child via Invitro Fertilization. |
