"We've looked into the details of the situation and we apologise to the customers involved," the statement said.  "We will continue to do everything in our power to ensure all our customers are treated the way they should be. We believe in equality for everyone, regardless of race, age, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation. That applies throughout our company, around the world with no exceptions."

Court awards N500 million to King Sunny Ade over copyrights infringement 30 years after he sued

Posted: 14 Nov 2015 10:06 AM PST

A Federal High Court on Friday, November 13, awarded King Sunny Ade N500 million as damages for copyright infringement. Also included was an additional N3 million for prosecuting the case.
This is coming thirty years after the Juju music legend took record manufacturing company African Songs and its subsidiary Take Your Choice Stores to court.

The two companies were ordered to pay the sum by Justice James Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Lagos, while delivering judgment in the suit first instituted by the musician in 1975.
King Sunny Ade had stated in his statement of claim that in 1975, a contract dispute arose between him and the two companies culminating to a judgement delivered by Justice Dosumu presiding over a Lagos high court.

According to him, in the said judgement the court ordered the companies to return the master tapes of the original musical works produced under the label of the two companies by Sunny Ade and his green sport back to him, but before the master tape could be returned the chairman chief Executive Office of the two companies Chief Bolarinwa Abioro died.

Consequently, in a bid to retrieve the master Tapes Sunny Ade in 1997 dragged the two companies before a federal high court in Lagos, joined as co-defendants are, Lati Alagbada, Record manufacturing Nigeria limited, Ibukunola printers, Alhaja Awawu Ade Amodu, and M.O. Alagbada, who he alleged have been using the master tapes to produce inferior qualities of his musical works and sell them to members of the public thereby depriving him of his means of livelihood.

Many of these companies don't exist anymore though...

Boko Haram not planning any attack in South West Nigeria- Army says

Posted: 14 Nov 2015 09:46 AM PST

Press statement from the Nigerian Army
The attention of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has been drawn to the above caption published by some section of the media claiming impending attacks by Boko Haram terrorists in some south western states of the country. This story is not only baseless but lacks substance in its entirety, hence should be disregarded. Of more worrisome is the claim that the terrorists have infiltrated the western states.
While the military and other security agencies have made tremendous successes in degrading and decimating the terrorists who are now in disarray having lost their centre of gravity, camps and their source of logistics. It would be unthinkable to raise these unfounded rumours of Boko Haram terrorist planning attack in not only in the west but any other part of the country for that matter.

The coordination and synergy between the military and other security services which led to the arrest of some ring leaders of the terrorists in some states is instructive to their incapability to wage any coordinated attack. However, the general public are requested to always be wary of suspicious individuals or groups in their localities and to report such to security agencies for prompt action as this war is Nigeria versus Boko Haram terrorists hence requires collective contribution of all Nigerians for timely ending of this terrorism.
The Armed Forces is using this medium to appeal to the good citizens of Nigeria particularly in the western part of the country not to lose sleep over the unfounded and fictitious reports and to go about their normal and legitimate businesses as the DHQ and other security agencies are monitoring the situation with all seriousness.

ISIS claims responsibility for Paris terror attacks, says France would remain at the top of its list of target

Posted: 14 Nov 2015 09:33 AM PST

The Islamic State group on Saturday claimed responsibility for a wave of attacks in Paris that left more than 120 people dead and at least 99 people injured on Friday night, and warms that the killings were the "first of a storm" In a statement released in Arabic, English, French and Russian, the group said its fighters donning suicide explosive belts and wielding machine guns carried out the targeted attacks in several locations in the French capital.

French security officials said one of the eight attackers was a woman, according to report. A Syrian passport was reportedly found near the body of one attacker. And at least one of the attackers was reportedly French. All of the attackers are dead, seven detonated their suicide vests and one was killed during the police raid at Bataclan concert hall where people were being held hostage.

The statements said eight militants armed with explosive belts and automatic weapons attacked carefully chosen targets in the "capital of adultery and vice," including a soccer stadium where France was playing Germany, and the Bataclan concert hall, where an American rock band was playing, and "hundreds of apostates were attending an adulterous party"

"Eight brothers carrying explosive belts and guns targeted areas in the heart of the French capital that were specifically chosen in advance: the Stade de France during a match against Germany which that imbecile Francois Hollande was attending; the Bataclan where hundreds of idolaters were together in a party of perversity as well as other targets in the tenth, eleventh and eighteenth arrondissement," said the ISIS statement.

"France and those who follow its path must know that they remain the principal targets of the Islamic State," it continued. The message suggested that there will be more attacks in the future.

"The smell of death will never leave their noses as long as they lead the convoy of the Crusader campaign," it said, adding that ISIS militants "are proud of fighting Islam in France and striking the Muslims in the land of the Caliphate with their planes, which did not help them at all in the streets of Paris and its rotten alleys, and this attack is the first of the storm and a warning to those who wish to learn." The statements did not provide the nationalities or other information about the attackers.

French President had earlier blamed the attacks on the Islamic State group and vowed to strike back.

Fashola speaks on the first time he met with his political godfather, Tinubu

Posted: 14 Nov 2015 09:06 AM PST

Former Lagos state governor and now Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola in this interview with The News magazine went down memory lane on how he met with his predecessor and political godfather, Bola Tinubu. According to Fashola, he met with Tinubu sometime in 1990 or 1991.
That is an invitation to walk down memory lane. I think it must have been 1990 or 1991. He was treasurer in Mobil, then. His office was at the Bookshop House at CMS on Odunlami Street. I didn't directly meet him. I had seen him at parties, but we never met.
At that time, I was a senior associate at the law firm of Sofunde, Osakwe, Ogundipe and Belgore, where I was practising. Wale Tinubu, his nephew, came to join the law firm, then. He was always mentioning "Uncle Bola", and one day, he said: ''let's go and see my uncle." We got there and went out to lunch with him. That was then I could say we formally met. From then on, he would consult us on legal issues and we would help and give him advice. Sometimes, he would just come and say. "See we have this issue, what do you lawyers think?" We ran around and he would always give us pocket money. I think one thing that left some impressions on me was his commitment to his staff and that was symbolised by what I witnessed on a particular day after the Sallah celebration. He brought Sallah meat to the office and supervised its sharing from floor to floor. As exalted as his office was, he was concerned to ensure that those who could not come to his house, even to the lowest driver, got part of the Sallah meat. I recalled that after the sharing of the meat, he sent someone to aggregate how much it would cost to buy soft drink for everybody and equally distributed money to them. The incident left an impression on me and what became a practice when I started observing the killing of rams for Sallah. For me, it speaks of his concern about those working for him"he said
Fashola says he is now under more pressure to become a better leader even after Tinubu had described him as one of his achievement
"Well, there are many ways to look at it. For me, that kind of statement coming from him puts more pressure on me. I thought that I had seen all the pressure that could come from this experience to be governor of Lagos State. That adds pressure on me in no small measure. I think how I became governor is public knowledge. Nothing could put pressure on me than the commitment in pursuit of his decision in 2006 that I was the candidate he was endorsing for governor and the cost in terms of stress, disagreement, fights and long-draw emotional arguments. Of course, immediately I won the election, the biggest pressure was to ensure that I didn't regret the decision. One, the people of Lagos State could have said: "We didn't know the man you have brought and he has turned the state upside down." There are other sides to it that I would want to keep to myself. As I have said time and time again, he should sit down and write his memoirs so that people may know the story of that election. This is what he should use to explain to Lagosians the offers, the counter-offers and choices he made and why he, as it were, went for broke. The question to ask is: What was his abiding commitment after eight years as well as questions on who became governor, and who did not? But, in terms of a next step from there, it is to say that it is an enriching experience for our democracy, and not simply about me. It is also about institution building in the sense that I have continued to compare our 13-year journey in spite of its twists and turns with those that we seek to benchmark ourselves against.

3 of the French attackers have been identified as Syrian, Egyptian and 1 from Paris

Posted: 14 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

One of the terrorists involved in last night's attacks in Paris has been officially identified as a Parisian, according to local media reports.

The man, who was killed at the Bataclan, was identified using his fingerprints and was from the southern Parisian neighbourhood of Courcouronnes.

French reports say that the man, who was around 30 years old, was already known to French anti-terrorist authorities prior to last night's attacks.
Meanwhile, a Syrian passport has been retrieved from one of the suicide bombers who blew himself up outside the Stade de France stadium last night, according to two French police officers.

An Egyptian passport has also been reportedly recovered from one of the three men who attacked the stadium.

The second of the stadium suicide bombers is believed to have been as young as 15 years old.

Three of the eight terrorists have now been identified: the two men with the Syrian and Egyptian passports outside the stadium, and the known French extremist at the Bataclan.

It is believed that the Syrian passport identified its owner as being 25 years old.

However it has not yet been confirmed whether the Syrian passport was authentic, or was one of the many forged passports flooding into Europe with the refugee crisis.

The French newspaper Liberation reported that one of the terrorists who carried out the attack at the Bataclan Theatre has been identified as a known French extremist.

According to French daily El Figaro, investigators have recordings of two of the terrorists at the Bataclan communicating in French.

Nigerian lawmakers need psychological evaluation- Etcetera

Posted: 14 Nov 2015 08:59 AM PST

As written by Etcetera:
One of the identified problems of investigative hearings and oversight of the executive arm is the multiplicity of committees with overlapping jurisdiction on the same subject matter. This has led to a situation where more than one committee is handling the same subject matter. Invitations are sent to the same officials of government by different committees on the same subject," says Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, while presenting the 8th House legislative agenda.

Dogara has reversed this statement and has gone ahead to increase the committees in the House of Rep from 84 to 95.
In other words, the Dogara- led House has told Nigerians that their clamour for the government to curb corruption and slash the cost of governance will continue to be a pipe dream. And they are also letting us know in very clear terms that as far as the overpaid national assembly members are concerned, it is all about sharing the booty.

This is coming as several ranking lawmakers of the 360-strong member chamber intensify lobbying for the headship of "Grade A" committees or what are otherwise considered "plum" committees.

Increasing the number of committees from 84 to 95, the House now has a rise in total allocation to the various committees.
Does it really make any sense splitting the committee on education into three – primary, secondary and tertiary education- and that on agriculture divided into two – mechanised and rudimentary agriculture?

I think this is simply the speaker compensating his supporters at the expense of the nation.

One question we should ask Mr Dogara is if it is not the same House of Representatives that had 20 committees under former Speaker, Umar Ghali Na'abba in 1999.

The United States is bigger than Nigeria in size and population and has a larger House of Representatives with 435 members, and it currently has 21 congressional committees, 20 of which are standing committees and one select committee.

Increasing the number of House Committees from 84 to 95 in the face of a dwindling revenue and their talks about 'the need to cut cost of governance' is hypocrisy of the highest order. The sad thing is that these guys are not doing anything for us. How it is that no member of the National Assembly has been recalled by his constituency beats me. What can 95 committees do that 20 can't? How many members constitute a committee? Are we going to have one person in several committees?
Well, I guess yes, and no wonder they have been scrambling for "plum committees". Plum? Isn't that a word for milking the treasury? Are we supposed to have anything 'plum' in the House? With the amount of committees, then every member will definitely be a chairman of one committee or the other.
The entire business of legislation should be made a part-time thing and members paid only for the times they actually sit and engage in legislative business. This will save cost of running the National Assembly and make sense in the noise about reducing the cost of governance.

Meanwhile, another troubling story in the news is that of the Taraba State governor approving the appointment of 50 special advisers and 62 senior special assistants, totalling 112 aides, who shall be advising him in the Government House. How difficult is governing a state like Taraba that the governors need 112 advisers?
We must stop our so-called politicians from this madness. If a governor needs 112 advisers to run his government, why electing him at all? We need to be conducting psychological tests on our political office seekers.

They have fashioned another way to milk the nation. This is corruption at another level, if they cannot cut down the cost of running the government in a dire time like this, then they should stop singing about fighting corruption because they are even more corrupt than the people they accuse of corruption.

BuzzerNG in collaboration with Freedom Hall presents the first ever Abuja Sunday Food Fest

Posted: 14 Nov 2015 12:35 AM PST

So Abuja, where should you be at noon this Sunday the 15th? You guessed it. The Abuja Sunday Food Fest slated for the 15th of November 2015 is the first of what will be many more of its kind.

It is intended to be a fun packed and lively event aimed at residents of the Federal Capital Territory and is primarily a project under the auspices of The BuzzerNG Company Abuja with Freedom Hall as collaborators along with several other businesses here in the city.
The event is a fanfare of sorts, with proceedings managed by popular Abuja online air personality and comedian Chuks-D-General & Celebrity DJ, DJ Oj of Rhythm FM Abj – the perfect duo for orchestrating a tension free environment.
The food fests aim is to first off, carve a niche for itself as the go-to-place on designated Sunday afternoons, a time slot rarely utilized by Abuja event planners.
Whether straight from their places of worship or the comfort of their homes, the idea is that when its time, you're at the Sunday food fest relaxing and having cocktails with friends or having a light lunch with your family and watching the kids play games or participate in actual competitions (Board Games, Eating Competitions, mini-cooking show downs, sack race, tug of war, egg in a spoon, card games etc.). Vendors come on board to sell everything from foods to pastries and any other edibles that can be thought of. Game corners are also provided for the gamers (young and not so young alike), outdoor movies, and a section wholly dedicated to kids so that the older crowds may mingle & socialize etc. without bothering about the safety of their wards.

It is no secret that the Abuja metropolis lacks in quality events that focus on bringing people together whilst factoring family inclusion; we've remedied this. We've also added a bit of innovation to it; any food combination (e.g. guinea fowl &baked potatoes with refreshment, Edikaikong & Semo, Special Pasta w. Peppered Chicken & Gizzard, Spinach Salad & Egg Wraps etc.) you purchase from any of the vendors at the Abuja Sunday Food Fest will be exactly  ₦1000.00
The event would also showcase the Abuja's first ever-Digital Marketing Platform -  www.buzzer.com.ng. Although active for a few months now, we decided to officially launch the website and we felt what better time was there to do so than in front of tummy-full well rested happy people.

Buzzer.com.ng is your one stop shop for online sales and marketing of goods and services, getting recommendations for your favourite eating spots, the best places to hang out in town etc.  From as little as a handbag to where to go on vacation with your in-laws, we've got it covered. It truly is the quintessential virtual market.

The venue is the Zanzibar Grill & Lounge, at the Maitama Amusement Park, IBB Way, Maitama. Our esteemed partners such as Freedom Hall, Colours in Ice, Zanzibar Grill & Lounge, Q Bites – Shawarma & Chicken, Maubby's Purple Box and Wild Buck will be there in full force to add flavour and variety to the event.
