DSS reacts to reports of its agents raiding ex NSA, Dasuki's Abuja residence Posted: 05 Nov 2015 12:50 PM PST Press statement from the Department of State Security 1. The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been brought to the report making rounds that its operatives illegally blocked the residence of the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki (Col/Rtd), in violation of a subsisting court order granting him a relief to travel oversea for medical services. This is to say the least that such report is not only unfounded and malicious but aimed at tarnishing the good image of the Service. 2. It may be recalled that SAMBO was initially arrested and charged to court for unlawful possession of firearms and money laundering, for which reason his international passport was seized and on the order of the court, returned to the registrar for custody. What has however brought the seeming standoff between SAMBO and the Service, despite the court-ordered release of his international passport on 4th November, 2015, is his refusal to appear before a Committee undertaking the investigation of an entirely different case. 3. The public may wish to note that the government set up the Committee to investigate procurement processes relating to a two billion dollar ($2billion) arms transaction by the last administration, under which SAMBO was the NSA. It was on this premise that he was invited by the Committee to shed more light on his involvement in the deal. It, therefore, remains surprising and shocking that SAMBO has refused to honour invitations of the Committee but instead resorts to grandstanding and subtle blackmail of the Service. His refusal to appear before the Committee has left the Service with no option than to adopt legal means to ensure his attendance. 4. Therefore, without doubt, SAMBO is pulling all strings available to him to evade justice and put the Service in bad light. The simple fact is that the DSS is not persecuting him. Nigerians are therefore enjoined to disregard the impression being created by him. This Service wishes to re-emphasise its commitment to the rule of law and strict adherence to democratic ideals. However, any person or group, no matter how highly placed, that may wish to test the will of the present democratic dispensation, will definitely be checked through the legal provisions of the law. Photos: Ogun state government denies that RCCG carried out repairs on Lagos-Ibadan expressway Posted: 05 Nov 2015 12:45 PM PST Ogun state government has released a statement debunking claims that the Redeemed Christian Church of God is responsible for some repairs being carried out on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. According to the statement which was posted on the state governor, Ibikunle Amosun's Facebook wall, the governor said his administration is responsible for the ongoing repairs on the road despite the fact that it is a Federal government road and is meant to be repaired by the FG. The statement and photos of Governor Amosun inspecting repairs on the road after the cut.. Our attention has been drawn to a report titled, Gridlock: RCCG Repairs Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, published on page 5 of the Punch newspapers of Thursday, November 5, 2015. The report, quoting an unnamed source at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, had claimed that the ongoing palliative work being done on some bad portions of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was being handled by the revered church. Contrary to that claim however, I will like to state that the ongoing palliative work on the Lagos Ibadan expressway is being handled by the Ogun State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure. Concerned about the plight of commuters on the ever busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the Ogun State Government, on Tuesday, embarked on palliative work on some bad portions of the expressway. Not minding the fact that it is a federal road, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, worried about the plight of commuters who spend hours in traffic gridlock on the road, directed the state Ministry of Works and infrastructure to immediately fix the bad portions of the road and also construct drainages. In giving the directive, the governor was particularly concerned about the need to immediately bring relieve to the road users especially as the Redeemed Christian Church of God and other churches on the ever busy road are also billed to hold events that will attract millions of worshippers this weekend. Speaking during an inspection tour of the ongoing palliative work being carried out by the Ogun State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure on the federal road at about 1 am on Wednesday, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun State Governor said, "In the real sense of it and for me there are no federal people, the people plying this road and other affected Federal roads within our axis are our people. We are all Nigerians and we are already collaborating with the Federal government to contribute our own quota to ensure that this road is fixed." It is surprising, therefore, for any journalist to claim that the multi-million naira job being carried out by the Ogun State government is being done by a religious organisation. The intervention job on the ever busy expressway is an initiative of the Ogun State government to rescue millions of Nigerians who spend hours in the gridlock occasioned by some bad portions of the road. It is also on record that the Ogun State government had carried out similar palliative measures on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, Sagamu-Ogijo-Ikorodu road and other federal roads within the state, because the state is strategically located in such a way that goods and passengers going to all other parts of the country have to pass through the gateway state. |

Woman is charged with trespassing after being bitten by Tiger Posted: 05 Nov 2015 08:04 AM PST A woman in Omaha was accused of trespassing after sneaking into a local zoo and being bitten by a tiger on Halloween night. Jacqueline Edie, 33, is currently being treated for injuries on her left hand at the Creighton University Medial Center. Edie, who showed signs of intoxication and acted aggressively towards hospital staff, allegedly snuck into the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium Saturday night to pet an 18-year-old Malayan tiger named Mai. Zoo officials say that upon reaching into the animal's cage, the tiger bit Edie's hand and caused severe trauma. A friend then transported Edie to the hospital. Police say the incident may have occurred at 4 a.m and it's is currently under investigation by the Omaha Police Department. How Edie managed to enter the zoo is still under investigation. Executive director Dennis Pate told Sky News additional cameras are being installed at the zoo, which is currently staffed by 24-hour security personnel and equipped with computerized locks for entry and exit points. |

N5,000 stipend: APC Senators acting party script’ - PDP Posted: 05 Nov 2015 07:27 AM PST Read PDP press statement below... The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says Wednesday's rejection by APC senators of the N5,000 monthly stipend, which they promised Nigerians during the electioneering, underscores the monumental hypocrisy of their party in getting to power by means of deceit and false promises to Nigerians.PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh in a statement on Thursday said that the development is a clear confirmation of the fact that the APC is a party of hypocrites, who never had the intentions of honouring any of their campaign promises. "The PDP declares that it is absolutely obvious to all that the APC came to power riding on monumental lies and deceit in making promises they had no intentions to keep. All they wanted was to get into power and they achieved this with their lying tongues. "Indeed, the unanimity displayed by the APC senators in rejecting the promised N5, 000 monthly welfare package, especially coming after their party and the Presidency had made futile efforts to distance themselves from it, further stresses the duplicitous spirit of the APC and its reprehensible insensitivity to the feelings and aspirations of Nigerians, especially the unsuspecting youths, women and the indigent, who they shamelessly swindled with false promises. "From the foregoing therefore, Nigerians should not expect any sincere action from the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government on the other promises including monthly allowance to discharged but unemployed NYSC members, free meals and scholarship to school children, free houses, bringing the naira to the same value with the dollar. "Our position remains that the APC has sufficiently confirmed to the world that they have a lot to learn on the leadership values of honesty, integrity, credibility and forthrightness. "Finally, we invite Nigerians to note the powers amply vested on them by the constitution under a democracy as we urge them to stand on such powers and hold the APC and its government accountable for all their campaign promises. Signed: Chief Olisa Metuh National Publicity Secretary |

Photo: Ken Saro-Wiwa's memorial art bus seized by Nigeria Customs Posted: 05 Nov 2015 06:56 AM PST A sculpture created as a memorial to Nigerian environmentalist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other activists has been denied entry into Nigeria, where it had been sent as a gift to mark the 20th anniversary of their execution by the military government. Customs officials impounded Sokari Douglas Camp's sculpture, in the form of a steel bus, when it arrived at Lagos port on 8 September, on grounds of its "political value". Leaflets and reports sent by courier to commemorate Saro-Wiwa's life and death were also seized. Subsequent efforts by the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, Social Action and other pressure groups have failed to secure the work's release and a memorial vigil in Bori-Ogoni may have to go ahead without it. Celestine AkpoBari, national coordinator for the Ogoni Solidarity Forum-Nigeria, has spent the past two months working to secure the release of the sculpture, called The Bus - Living Memorial, from a secure area of Lagos port and remains determined to get it to Ogoniland, nine hours' drive from Lagos, next week. "I have been fortunate to see the bus in London but it will be so exciting to see it in Nigeria, I don't know if I might faint," he told the Guardian. "It will give so much happiness and strength and every Ogoni will want to come home and see it. We are still looking forward to hearing the good news, we need the bus because it is the symbol of our struggle now that Ken is not with us. We will use the presence of the bus to begin another era of our campaign for justice." The Bus was commissioned following a competition to mark the 10th anniversary of the executions andfirst exhibited outside the Guardian's London offices in 2006. The artist described her work as a "spectacle" and symbol of the importance of transport to environmental debate. It was given to the Ogoni people by UK campaign group Platform, to show solidarity with them. The Bus spent four days at the bottom of the Thames in August, after it was dropped while being loaded on to a ship at the Port of Tilbury in Kent, and was repaired before leaving the UK for Lagos on 19 August. The plan was for it to make several stops in Nigeria en route to its final destination in Ogoniland. Source: The Guardian |
