Alleged missing 105 Nigerian soldiers: Army releases statement Posted: 19 Nov 2015 01:06 PM PST The Nigerian Army has released a statement explaining what transpired in Gudumbali, Borno state on Wednesday November 18th where 105 soldiers were said to have gone missing after a gun battle with Boko haram members. The statement which is signed by Tukur Ismail Gusau, the Media Coordinator Operation Lafiya Dole, states that the claim is far from true. The statement after the cut... The attention of the Theatre Command Headquarters Maiduguri has been drawn to various releases on social media on the operation at Gudumbali , northern Borno State. Most of the publications are not only fictions but imagination of the writers that have no iota of knowledge on military operation. Unfortunately, this is coming at a time when the military has created several avenues for them to get first hand information on our activities. In the quest to be on the same footing with each Nigerian, Media centre was established in the North East. Additional to this is the open door policy of the leadership style of our chief of Army Staff Lt Gen TY Buratai where he carries throughout his operational engagements media personalities. For the records Gulumba was captured by own troops on 10 November 2015 and our troops deployed to secure and weed off Boko Haram terrorists. The location was attacked yesterday morning which resulted in fiarce battle till afternoon. Troops went for pursuit after which they mop and reorganise. The unit suffered some injuries and casualties and equally killed several insurgents. The Nigerian Army has nothing to hide but we call all patriots to support these troops that are courageously fighting for peace and security of our nation. The Theatre Command wishes to state that the story is far from the truth and misrepresentation of facts. In fact, it smacks of the imagination of those symphatetic to Boko Haram terrorists. The Theatre Commander Operation LAFIYA DOLE has addressed the issue and gave journalists the opportunity to ask questions and clarify doubts about the Gudumbali incidence and yet, the medium is yet to reflect the true situation. It should be stated here that, although the unit suffered some casualties, what the medium was reporting was grossly exaggrated for reasons best known to them. The number of casualty and equipment lost as being circulated is not correct, the situation was unnecesserily blowned beyond proportion to give terrorists the type of propaganda they desired. The affected personnel sustained only minor injuries, not gun shot wounds. You are please requested to disseminate this information to the general public. Thanks for your continous support. Colonel Tukur Ismail Gusau Media Coordinator Operation LAFIYA DOLE |

Belgian player stops playing football, takes a piss mid-match and misses goal (photos) Posted: 19 Nov 2015 12:56 PM PST Belgian amateur side Eendracht Aalst racked up an impressive away victory over KFC Izegem in the Belgian Third Division last weekend, though the result has quickly been overshadowed by this bizarre event. With his side 2-1 up, Eendracht main striker Philippe Janssens decided that he just couldn't hold his urinary bladder any longer and dashed off behind the Izegem goal post to urinate against the fence. Despite only having 10 men on the field, Eendracht then quickly dispossessed their opponents, charged up the field and scored on the counter-attack to make it 3-1, all while Janssens was having a piss (wee). Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws report Janssens might be about to receive a visit from the police after footage of his mid-match easement went viral in Belgium over the weekend, and a fine of somewhere between €60-350 (around £40-250) may be in the pipeline. |
Photos: Buhari receives Peugeot car executives in Nigeria, inspects latest brands of Peugeot Posted: 19 Nov 2015 12:47 PM PST Press statement from the presidency below... President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja reaffirmed his Administration's commitment to the Federal Government's privatisation and commercialisation policy. Speaking at an audience with Peugeot's Executive Vice President for Africa and the Middle-East, Mr. Jean-Christophe Quemard, President Buhari stressed, however, that greater consideration will now be given to the technical and managerial competence of prospective buyers of government-owned companies. The President said that a higher premium will be placed on the technical competence and financial clout of bidders in future privatisation exercises to avoid the running aground of privatized companies by ill-equipped and incapable investors. President Buhari who spoke after being briefed on plans by Peugeot to stage a comeback to Nigeria after the collapse of the privatization of Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria Limited, noted that privatization could only succeed and yield desired benefits if buyers of government-owned companies possess essential skills and resources. Mr. Quemard assured President Buhari that Peugeot was ready to reinvest in vehicle assembly in Nigeria, provided that the right indigenous partners are found. The Peugeot Chief Executive for Africa and the Middle-East briefed the President on the company's three-phased plan to resume vehicle assembly in Nigeria with 4,000 cars next year, rising up to 10,000 cars by 2021. He said that the plan, which he urged the Federal Government to support with appropriate policies and actions, will entail higher local content in the assembly of Peugeot cars in Nigeria and the exportation of locally assembled Peugeot cars from Nigeria to neighbouring African countries. Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria Limited which was privatized some years ago has technically reverted to government ownership with up to 85 per cent of its shares now held by the Federal Government and the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON). I just love Millwall and this is a good way to get the next generation involved. One of the women at the registry office was a Millwall fan and she loved it when she saw what we are going to name him. I threatened to do it but I don't think my wife believed me! Paris attacks: French National anthem will be sang by all Premier League clubs this weekend Posted: 19 Nov 2015 11:44 AM PST English clubs will sing the French national anthem across all stadiums this weekend, Premier League bosses have confirmed. The anthem will take place prior to the coin toss, with teams coming together in the centre circle, along with the match officials, facing the main stand. It should be noted that about 72 French players play in the premier league. The choral version of La Marseillaise will represent a show of 'solidarity and remembrance' according to English Premier league chief Richard Scudamore. He said: "Given how close we are as well as the long-standing relationship that exists between the Premier League and France, playing La Marseillaise as an act of solidarity and remembrance is the right thing to do. We were all saddened and deeply shocked by the events in Paris last Friday, and the fact it was an attack on people enjoying their everyday freedoms like going to a bar, a concert or a football match resonates with football fans and the general public throughout the UK" |

Photos: Lai Mohammed meets heads of NTA, NOA, FRCN, others, blast them over inefficiency Posted: 19 Nov 2015 10:55 AM PST Newly appointed Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed today met with various heads of parastatals in the Ministry of Information. At the meeting, Lai Mohammed blasted them over what he said was their lack of efficiency in their discharge of duties. He said politicizing of issues by the government agencies in the ministry has led to their unprofessional practice in recent times. More pics and what he said after the cut... "Let me start with the Federal Government-owned media organizations, the NTA, FRCN and NAN. Why have you all chosen to play second fiddle in the country's media landscape? I ask because the NTA and FRCN of yesterday is not the same as what we have today. Whereas most broadcast journalists of note in our country today passed through the NTA and the FRCN, there is no denying the fact that the private radio and TV stations are doing much better, at least going by the fact that most Nigerians prefer them to the public broadcasters. Indeed, most Nigerians find the private broadcasters more credible. The reason for this is not farfetched. First, the public broadcasters have thrown professionalism to the wind while also showing total disregard for editorial independence. They have mortgaged their credibility on the altar of political correctness. Yet, these Federal Government-owned media establishments are endowed with highly-trained and well-qualified personnel, better infrastructure and a wide reach. It is interesting to note that these government-owned media organizations complain of financial woes, forgetting that there is a link between credibility and profitability. Advertisers will surely flock to more credible media organizations, and of course it is also true that content drives advertisement. The same law of diminishing returns also apply to NAN, which was once the leading national news agency in the whole of Africa, boasting of the best professionals in the news business. Today, the agency is punching far below its weight, despite its presence in all the states of the Federation. We intend to provide leadership for the Federal Government-owned media organizations in a manner that will make them to become the first source of information, so that they can more effectively function as a vehicle for the change mantra of the Buhari Administration, and also regain their lost glory. The combined reach of the NTA, FRCN and NAN, if effectively utilized, will facilitate the success of the change campaign. But they must first enhance their own credibility, because no credibility-deficient news organization can successfully propagate the message of change. At this juncture, ladies and gentlemen, let me assure Nigerians that under this Administration, no Federal Government-owned media organization will deny the opposition the opportunity to air their views. It is true that while we were in opposition, we were treated as outcasts by these public broadcasters. They denied us the use of their platforms, they rejected our adverts and even made themselves available for the most abhorrent hate campaign ever in the history of electioneering campaign in our country. But in an era of change, which is our mantra, that cannot and will not continue. Opposition members are Nigerians, just like members of the ruling party. Even the ruling party will benefit when the opposition is allowed to air their views freely, because you learn more from people who disagree with you. Therefore, let the ruling party and the opposition air their ideas and let the people, who wield the ultimate power, decide at the end of the day"he said |

Photo: World second largest diamond in over a century discovered in Botswana Posted: 19 Nov 2015 10:45 AM PST A high quality diamond said to be the biggest discovery in more than a century has been discovered at a mine in Botswana, said mine company, Lucara Diamond Corp. "The magnificent stone, which originated from the south lobe of Lucara's Karowe Mine, is the world second largest gem quality diamond ever recovered and largest ever to be recovered through a modern processing facility," the company said a statement. Shares in Lucara shot up 34 percent to 14.2 kronor in morning Thursday trading in Stockholm after news of the 1,111 carat gem was made public. Botswana is the world's second biggest diamond producer, and Lucara said the gem was the largest ever to be recovered in the country. "The significance of the recovery of a gem quality stone larger than 1,000 carats, the largest for more than a century....cannot be overstated," said William Lamb, the President and chief executive of Lucara. The stone is yet to be evaluated, but commodities and mining analyst Kieron Hodgson, said it has "the potential to be one very expensive diamond." Valuation will depend on potential inclusions, how it would behave in cutting, optimal shape as well as final colour," he told AFP. "All these things will need to be evaluated prior to bidding." he added. The biggest diamond discovered is the 3,106-carat Cullinan, found near Pretoria in South Africa in 1905. Lucara indicated on its website that the Karowe Mine had also this week turned up further finds -- an 813 carat stone and a 374 carat stone, prompting Lamb to laud "an amazing week" for the company. We may downsize or cut down on salaries- Nigerian Governors Forum Posted: 19 Nov 2015 10:18 AM PST Governors under the umbrella body of the Nigerian Governors Forum say they may have to downsize the number of Civil Servants on their payroll or reduce the salaries of civil servants following the dwindling revenue generated from the Federal and state levels. Rising from their meeting in Abuja yesterday November 18th, one of the governors, Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state who spoke with newsmen, said there was no way the country could continue with a situation where expenditure is more than income. "We are faced with a situation where we either have to reduce cost through salary reduction or downsize. All these we don't want to do but prefer to have a roundtable with the president, ministers, economists to look for means of getting out of this problem."he saidOn his part, the Chairman of the NGF and Niger state governor Abdul'aziz Yari said the falling price of oil has made it difficult to pay the N18,000 minimum wage "The situation is no longer the same when we were asked to pay N18,000 minimum wage, when oil price was $126 per barrel and continued paying N18,000 minimum wage when the oil is $41 per barrel and the source of government expenditure is from oil, and we have not seen prospects in the oil industry in the near future. We are coming together in a roundtable with President Buhammadu Buhari and his team of ministers, technocrats, economic experts to see how we can tackle our situation."he said |
