Buhari applauds armed forces resolve to speedily end insurgency, warns that Human rights violation will be punished

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 09:24 AM PDT

Press statement from the presidency
President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday in Kaduna reaffirmed his administration's total commitment to the rule of law and warned that proven acts of human rights violation by the Armed Forces will be punished under his leadership. Addressing officers, troops and newly commissioned cadets at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), President Buhari reminded them that the rule of law applied to the Armed Forces as much as any other institution in the country.
"I wish to remind you of the Federal Government's commitment to overhaul the rules of engagement and improve operational and legal mechanisms so that disciplinary steps are taken against proven human rights violations by the armed forces. We are committed to a thorough investigation of recent and any future occurrences of human rights violations by elements of our Armed Forces. While I applaud the integrity and sterling record of the Armed Forces as an institution, this administration will insist on the rule of law, and deal with any proven cases of deviation from laws of armed conflict, including human rights abuses. In operational conduct Nigerians expect our Armed Forces to keep law and order, and not to behave like bullies. Let me reiterate this administration's commitment to due process, merit and total observance of the rule of law as central pillars of a prosperous and democratic society. Rule of law as an element of good governance applies to the Armed Forces as much as any institution in our country. It is therefore gratifying that all three Services have recently taken steps to emphasize strict adherence to rules in recruitment, promotions, procurement, project executions and civil-military relations," the President said at the passing out of Officer Cadets of the NDA's 62 Regular Course and Short Service Course 43.

Observing that security remains the most important challenge in his Administration's "Change" Programme, President Buhari said that the nation expects exemplary conduct and professionalism from officers and men of its Armed Forces at all times and in all situations.
"The objectives our fight against terrorism cannot be realized without a credible and effective military. You must avoid any behavior that will tarnish your honour and dignity as commissioned officers. Your commitment and loyalty to the Armed Forces and the nation must be total. I urge you to take your roles in the on-going process of rebuilding our Armed Forces very seriously," President Buhari told the newly-commissioned officers.

Declaring that the Federal Government was pleased with the Armed Forces' resolve to end the insurgency facing the country once and for all, President Buhari assured them of his Administration's determination to ensure the speedy provision of platforms and equipment they require to win the war against terrorism and meet their long term needs.

65 year old woman gets twelve strokes over witchcraft allegation in Sokoto

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 09:08 AM PDT

A 65 year old woman identified as Zainab Labbo was allegedly flogged with twelve strokes as punishment for practicing witchcraft in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto state.

According to The Sun, Zainab was flogged at the palace of the District Head, Alhaji Nasiru Malami Ahmed, in response to a complaint lodged against her by her daughter-in-law. Residents of the community say Zainab's daughter-in-law had lodged a complaint before the district head last year, alleging that her mother-in-law was aiding her son to maltreat her through diabolical means.

The palace authority summarily tried the accused and found her guilty of the allegation leveled against her. Zainab denied the allegation to journalists who were there to investigate the incident. She also confirmed that twelve strokes were administered on her by the palace guards on the order of the District Head.

Aggrieved members of the village recently held a press conference where they stated that the woman was not the first victim to suffer such an unjust treatment by palace authorities. They added that many residents have been invited to the palace and summarily tried for one offence or the other. They accused the District head, Alhaji Nasiru Malami Ahmed of high handedness. They called on the state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and His Eminence, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar III, to come to their aid, as a matter of urgency.

However in response to the allegations of maltreatment, the younger brother to the district head, Alhaji Aliyu Sarkin-Yamma, and Village Head of Tsabre area, described the the allegations as "unfounded". He explained that all disputes lodged at the palace are handled in accordance with the dictates of Shari'ah Law. He said both himself and his brother are running the affairs of the people with the absolute fear of God, saying, "we are only dispensing justice in accordance with Shari'ah Law and we are not afraid of any probe in this direction."

The Divisional Police Officer in the area, Mr Ilyasu Tanko, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), when contacted, confirmed the receipt of the complaints of attacks from the villagers and said  that the police is appropriately investigating the matter.

Why You Must Stay Tuned To MTN Project Fame...

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 09:06 AM PDT

So what exactly makes theMTN Project Fame so special? What readily pops to mind would probably be the impressive talents that do vocal battle, week-in, week-out. But the competition is much more than that. Take the fashionable side of Project Fame for instance.

Today, MTN Project fame has emerged as a major fashion trend setter. If you are looking for the latest fashion trends then you probably should be glued to the show.

There's the ever impeccable Joseph Benjamin and the delectable Bolanle Olukanni, hosts of the music talent reality TV show. How about the contestants clad in various eye-catching outfits, some of which reflect the genre of music they perform? The judges and the Faculty are not left out.

In commemoration of MTN Project Fame's rich fashion heritage, this edition will feature the PF Style Contest. Followers of the show will be required to style and upload pictures of how they would want their favourite contestant to look like on Instagram with the hashtag #PFStyleContest or #MTNProjectFame8. The Winner will be rewarded with a VIP invite to the PF Gala show, backstageselfies with favourite contestant and other fantastic prizes.

Fashion apart, the silent (and sometimes not so silent) battles between the Judges and the Faculty is always a striking point in the show. First there's the Faculty made up of Joke Silva the veteran actress, Principal of the Faculty and 'mother'to allthe contestants.Dupe Ige, the ever approachable Voice Coach, and the strict Ben Ogbeiwei make up the list of the Faculty. Together they protect the contestants from the Judges made up of theoutspoken yet objective Bibi Brew,Tee. Y. Mix, probably the most musically savvy of the lot and the hard to please Ade Bantu. The run-ins between the two groups are always an added side attraction to the show.

And then there's the music from the contestants. That's what MTN Project Fame is all about; West Africa's finest battling for the opportunity to become the next Iyanya, Chidinma or Praiz.

On a general note, the MTN Project Fame season 8 has been a potpourri of everything- from fashion to lifestyle, to power tussle and surprises.

Enough said. Keep a date with MTN Project Fame on NTA, Sound City, TVC, and Ultima owned GET TV between 6:00PM and 9:00PM this weekend to catch more exciting scenes. For conversations follow @MTNNG, &   on twitter and Instagram, @MTN_pojectfame

I year after: TB Joshua pays tribute to victims of building collapse, says their death is an unavoidable call

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 09:00 AM PDT

In a post titled "An exhortation on Martyrs of Faith', founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations Prophet TB Joshua paid tribute to the 116 people who died in his church's building collapse which occurred on September 12th 2014. He said the death of the 116 people who were mostly South Africans was an unavoidable call and that nothing happens without the knowledge and approval of God. What he wrote after the cut...

"It is important to remember that we are members of a family - the family of God. Consequently, for an occasion like this, God should be the Invitee.

My people, we are here because of our loved ones, who fell asleep in the bosom of the Lord. Our faithful and true God will bring them with Jesus, a Rock against which you can lean even as the winds of mourning howl around us.

As Christians, there comes a time when we will need to say good-bye and sing a "requiem" for our lost brethren. It is right and noble for Christians to gather, pray and say, "Requiescat In Pace". That is, for the soul of their loved ones to "rest in peace".

It is now one year since our beloved brothers and sisters slept in the Lord. For those of us who find it difficult to let go, we must realise that their death is an unavoidable call - a call to our Heavenly home that no one can disobey.
Of course we all know that this has nothing to do with age, status, rich or poor or even the nature of death itself - as this happened to our predecessors, including the Apostles who paid the supreme price to bring the Gospel to all of us. Some were even beheaded at their prime age. Others were stoned to death in the course of the Gospel. Some others were even crucified upside down, not to talk of the ones that were dropped inside boiling oil.

For those who of us who cannot trace or touch the body of those who are resting in the bosom of the Lord, we must realise that such examples abound among God's Generals in the Bible.

If you have not yet said good-bye in Jesus' name, now is your fine grace to do so. You could write a letter to your loved one who slept in the Lord. Express your mind on the good and the bad. Feel free to do whatever you want with the letter. Read and seal the letter. You might decide to share the letter with either your church authority or pastor and do away with the letter as the Spirit of God directs. Once you have done that, leave the rest to the future with expectation as God holds our future.

My people, no mortal man or devil can supersede the plan of God for your life. As a Christian, once you understand and believe this, you set yourself free. Let us set ourselves free from this happening, as it is the will of God, which is unchangeable. When it is the will of God, it happens as His will. If you harbour offence, you cannot stay in God's will. Let us not harbour offence because it produces more fruit of sin, such as bitterness, anger and resentment, all of which are the purpose and will of the devil.

On a number of occasions, many of us have become victims of maltreatment in the hands of wicked men and women. Honestly you may have been treated unjustly and you get offended. But when you harbour any offence, you fulfil the purpose of your enemy, thereby being pushed out of God's will. When you free your mind and stop harbouring offence, you will maintain and stay in the course of God's will. On the other hand, if you continue to harbour offence, you automatically become a victim and captive of the enemy, thereby fulfilling his own purpose and will.

Remember that nothing can come against us without God's knowledge and approval. Let's face the fact - if the devil who hates us with passion could have his way, he would not hesitate to destroy us at will. You must keep this exhortation before you.

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man. But God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond limit (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Don't get offended, neither should you harbour any offence. This is the weapon to resist the devil. Remember the message of the Cross: "Father, forgive them," said Jesus. This message of forgiveness points to the future and not to look behind.

Finally brethren, I will not leave you without stating this simple conclusion - why are we rushing? Can we reach the end of this road without God's knowledge and approval?

In Nigeria today, poverty wears a Northern face - Gov Shettima

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 08:56 AM PDT

Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima says poverty in Nigeria now boldly wears a Northern face. He said this at the Northern Governors Forum meeting which held in Kaduna state yesterday.
Things have become so bad, so much so that we can say without fear of contradiction that in Nigeria today, poverty glaringly wears a bold northern face. We have turned our region into a laughing stock, derided by friends and foes alike, and, not without justification, as having dragged the rest of the country down with us. Regrettably today, our region has become a thriving nest for war, terrorism, deep seated social divisions, senseless violence, mind-boggling intolerance, injustice, destitution, joblessness, and all manners of other social vices, the height of which is the madness called Boko Haram. No amount of lamentation will, of course, solve our many problems. We need to act, and fast too. This generation of Northern leaders, led by us the Governors, have both a moral and constitutional responsibility as well as a historic opportunity to reverse the negative fortunes of our people.
We must do everything in our power to restore and entrench the lofty values of unity, understanding, tolerance, mutual respect, empathy, justice and mutual coexistence in the minds of our people and region. We must firmly and decisively commit ourselves to fighting poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, terrorism and other forms violent crimes in the north." he said

Woman has sex with passed-out-drunk boyfriend in the middle of a parking lot in broad daylight (photos)

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 08:55 AM PDT

A woman in Virginia named Kimberly Jackson, 36, was arrested for having sex with her unconscious boyfriend in a parking lot in broad daylight outside a busy shopping area in East Virginia Beach Boulevard on Tuesday September 8th. When police was called to the scene of the sex act by mortified passersby, they found the man, Earl Palmer, unresponsive while the woman straddled him. They later told police, they did it because they were drunk...

The sex act while lasted for a few minutes was filmed by passersby and shared on social media...

The woman was charged with public drunkenness but was released out of the jail the next day.

Speaking about it to reporters later, Kimberly said "I was in the mood, and that's basically what happened,' and then she blamed it on the excessive consumption of alcohol
Her man later came to her defence. He claimed he agreed at the last minute to have sex but passed out from drinking.
'I'm here trying to clear her name and let them know I consented to that. I just didn't finish the job, as you could say. Everyone wants to do something spontaneous. I'm not being disrespectful to you. Have you ever done anything spontaneous?' he told WTKR:

Okorocha, Oshiomole say they will not declare their assets publicly

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 08:30 AM PDT

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state and his Edo state counterpart, Adams Oshiomole say they will not be following in the footsteps of President Buhari in declaring their assets publicly. Speaking with Punch through his chief press secretary Sam Onwuamado, Governor Okorocha said declaration of assets was an individual thing and that no governor is mandated to do so by law..
"This is an individual thing. Governor Okorocha believes he is a second term governor. He is not a new governor that should be declaring assets. Meanwhile there is no law that says governors should declare their assets. When former president Jonathan was in power, who talked about declaration of assets? What president Buhari has done is a good thing but it is not mandatory"he said
On his part, Oshiomole who also spoke through his media aide, Kassim Afegbua, said it was not enshrined in the constitution that it was mandatory for him to declare his assets
"My governor has said while it is constitutional for public office holders to declare their assets making it public is not a matter enshrined in the 1999 constitution. Every public officer is bound to declare but the idea of making it public is not in the constitution"he said

Pastor Anita Oyakhilome writes about abusive relationships and marriages

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 08:26 AM PDT

In a post on her blog titled 'There is always something to be thankful for', pastor Anita Oyakhilome, who filed for divorce from the founder of Christ Embassy, Chris Oyakhilome, on April 9, 2014 on the grounds of "unreasonable behaviour" talks about abusive relationships and marriages.

She began with a quote from American actor, Michael J. Fox "One's dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but it can never be taken away unless it is surrendered.". See what she wrote after the cut...

She wrote:
After an abusive relationship or marriage, there is no doubt you will have feelings of deep sorrow for a long time, which could go on for possibly months or even years. These feelings will come and go periodically as you reflect and you remember things from the past that would make you feel distressed.
You may be inundated with disappointments, which may lead you to voice your regrets, especially coming across certain people or a person. Several Instances could cause flashbacks and bring back thoughts of regret such as; signing a contract, making a decision, joining an organization, trusting people, buying a property. Also your mind would question why you hung unto a dead marriage or stayed in an abusive relationship. Don't stay in that condition for too long.
Regrets will only aggravate your feelings. Forget about the things you cannot change and focus on being thankful. Don't put your life on hold, rather plan what you would like to accomplish in one week, one month, three months and in a year's time.
See the silver lining in the cloud. You may struggle to find or observe that flicker of light emerging out of the darkness but give yourself time to recover from that shocking hopeless experience, then thank God for making you strong enough to walk away from the abuse.
The situation might be tough, with burdensome chains, but you will get better. You can rise up to the challenge and improve yourself. Something good will come out of your situation. You will become a stronger and more productive person when you learn from your experience and use your knowledge to improve yourself for new prospects ahead. "I want my life to bring comfort to others and I am on that journey now thankfully." Every ending is really a new beginning for beautiful opportunities ahead.

British heir accuses his mother of racism towards his half-Nigerian wife

Posted: 12 Sep 2015 08:21 AM PDT

The relationship between the heir to Longleat estate, future Marquess of Bath, Ceawlin Thynn and his mother has deteriorated so badly that she was not invited to his wedding to Emma McQuiston, the daughter of Nigerian oil tycoon Ladi Jadesimi and British mother, Suzanna McQuisto, The Telegraph reports.

The marchioness, who has spent more time at the Longleat estate since the death of her long-term lover in France, is said to ignore her son's wife whenever they cross paths in the grounds of the estate. Though the 29-year-old aspiring television chef and food blogger has known the Bath family since she was a child, when the couple announced their engagement, Thynn, 41, claims his mother asked: "Are you sure about what you're doing to 400 years of bloodline?"

The viscount told the Sunday Times that his 71-year-old mother has no contact with their baby son, John, because, "I don't want him contaminated by that sort of atmosphere and those sort of views" he said.

Despite trying to ignore his mother's racist comments, he claims she repeatedly spoke out against his relationship with McQuinston, who is said to have been 'devastated' after hearing her mother-in-law's comments.

McQuiston told Tatler magazine back in 2013: "There has been some snobbishness, particularly among the much older generation. There's class and then there's the racial thing."

Emma, Viscountess Weymouth will become Britain's first black marchioness when her husband inherits the title from his father.
