Statement on abduction of Chief Olu Falae - FFK

Posted: 21 Sep 2015 12:58 PM PDT

Statement from chief Femi Fani-Kayode. Read below...
The abduction of Chief Olu Falae is not only unacceptable but it also an exceptionally dangerous development. I say this because he is not only an elder-statesman of our country but he is also one of the most revered leaders of Afenifere and the south-west. We cannot sit by idly and watch our leaders and elders being endangered, shamed and humiliated in this way.
It is the governments job to keep us all safe and secure and they are failing in that duty. I call on the President and our security agencies to effect the expeditious and immediate release of Chief Olu Falae. They must rescue him from these vagabonds and vandals as soon as possible before things get out of hand. Let it be clearly understood that if anything happens to him and if he doesn't come home hale and hearty we will hold the Federal Government responsible and there will be consequences. Those that are in power would do well to take what I have said very seriously.

Okonjo-Iweala appointed Chair-elect of Gavi board, a multilateral Public-Private Partnership on vaccines

Posted: 21 Sep 2015 09:59 AM PDT

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has accepted to serve as Chair of the 28-member Board of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, GAVI, an international public-private partnershipcommitted to saving the lives of children and and protecting people's health by improving access to immunization in developing countries.

Official announcement by Gavi Internationally renowned development economist and former Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed Chair-elect of the Board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. She will take up the position of Chair from January 2016.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala will bring more than 33 years of development and financial expertise to the Gavi Board at a critical period for immunisation in developing countries. Despite record coverage rates, every year around 19 million children are still missing out on a full course of the most basic vaccines. Additionally, more than 20 countries with growing economies are preparing to transition from Gavi support by 2020, meaning they will take on the full cost of their immunisation programmes.

Increased access to immunisation has been a major factor in the 53% fall in child mortality between 1990 and 2015. Gavi currently supports more than 310 immunisation programmes in 73 of the world's poorest countries and has so far committed US$ 1.2 billion towards helping them to strengthen their health systems. Since 2000, Gavi has supported the immunisation of more than half a billion additional children, leading to seven million future deaths being averted.

Over the next five years, Gavi aims to support countries to immunise an additional 300 million children, leading to a further five to six million lives being saved. Vaccine Alliance support will also see a 10-fold increase in the proportion of children in Gavi-supported countries receiving all 11 vaccines recommended by WHO – rising from 5% today to 50% by 2020.

"I am excited to be joining Gavi during this crucial time," said Dr Okonjo-Iweala. "Gavi has a well-earned reputation as one of the leading players in global health, providing services that underpin human and economic development. We must build on this solid foundation to create sustainable programmes that will drive down vaccine-preventable diseases, reach every child and provide them with a sound basis for their futures."

Dr Okonjo-Iweala has twice served as Finance Minister in Nigeria, most recently between 2011 and 2015 with the expanded portfolio of the Coordinating Minister for the Economy. She has also held several key positions at the World Bank, most recently as Managing Director.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala currently serves on the board of the Rockefeller Foundation and ONE, among others. She is chair of African Risk Capacity, and the recipient of numerous honors including honorary doctorate degrees from Yale, University of Pennsylvania and Brown. She was named by Fortune magazine as one of the 50 greatest world leaders 2015, and by Forbes for five consecutive years as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world. In 2014, Dr Okonjo-Iweala was recognised by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala graduated with an A.B. magna cum laude in Economics from Harvard University, and holds a PhD in Regional Economics and Development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala was chosen through a Board-managed competitive international search process.
In taking up the position of Board Chair, Dr Okonjo-Iweala will succeed Dagfinn HøybrÃ¥ten, a former Norwegian Minister of Health and current Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Mr HøybrÃ¥ten, who joined the Board in 2006 as an independent member and was appointed Chair in 2010, has guided Gavi through an unprecedented acceleration of new vaccine introductions in developing countries. Today, more children than ever are being protected against major killers like pneumonia and severe diarrhoea.

The speed of vaccine introductions during Mr Høybråten's tenure has put Gavi firmly on course to reach its five year target of supporting developing countries to immunise nearly a quarter of a billion additional children between 2011 and 2015.
Mr HøybrÃ¥ten chaired Gavi through successful pledging events in London and Berlin, in 2011 and 2015 respectively, which together secured pledges for childhood immunisation in developing countries totalling almost $12 billion.

As Chair, he also oversaw deliberations that led to key Board decisions on funding for new vaccines including the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) into the routine immunisation systems of Gavi-supported countries.

"I am proud to have played my part in the unprecedented increase in the number of children in developing countries who have access to vaccines," said Mr HøybrÃ¥ten. "Gavi's success in improving health and reducing illness and death lies in our ability to work collaboratively on complex immunisation challenges. I wish Dr Okonjo-Iweala every success and I look forward to the next exciting chapter in the Gavi story."

Pay-TV: Why Competition Is Good For The Subscriber And…

Posted: 21 Sep 2015 09:58 AM PDT

As a pay-TV subscriber, you, most probably, want greater competition in the industry.  Understandable and really healthy wish. Competition, for a start, makes for bigger diversity in options, leaving you with a rich, probably infinite TV buffet from which you pick and choose. With this freedom, you also may be the beneficiary of lower subscription that may arise from competition among providers to attract and retain subscribers and retain through very pocket-friendly rates.

That, sure, would stop any provider from price-gouging you because it has a monopoly or a semblance of it. Naturally, competition drives providers to offer the most compelling content on their platforms in order to convince you of the need to choose them. All good. You, like everybody else, want a bargain when making a purchase. The competition among pay-TV providers for your mind makes you the king, who must be pleased. If you are dissatisfied with one service, you simply move to another-without having to pay more for better service. That is the way it should be. But pay-TV providers are not necessarily owners of the content they broadcast.

Most times, they are just distributors of such. Content owners, who sell to pay-TV companies, want as much money as possible for their product-just like you would if you were in their shoes. This is a lot easier to achieve if you have many willing buyers. Now, you will discover that competition swings both ways. Just as it is possible for competition to make the subscriber the king (already explained above), it has another side, which makes it impossible for the provider or distributor to offer rock-bottom subscription rates the subscriber wants. Premium TV content, for instance, whatever the multiplicity of options to the subscriber, is not going to be sold on the cheap because it was not bought on the cheap. A good example is live sports broadcast, which almost always makes a pay-TV provider the preferred choice. The acquisition of rights to broadcast premium sport content is the result of fierce competition among providers.

This, inevitably, drives up the cost of acquisition. Earlier this year, there was bidding, in England, for the broadcast rights to the Barclays Premier League for the next three years (2016 -2019). So fierce was the process that when it ended, it had provoked a 70 per cent jump in price. Sky, which paid a little over 4 billion pounds of the 5.146 billion pounds for the rights, initially announced that it was not going to increase subscription. A few months later, it announced a hike in subscription on its sports bouquet. Sky had no option.

A 70% jump in cost is not insignificant. Here in Nigeria, the other side of competition was seen a few years ago. HiTv, the now defunct pay-TV company, arrived on the scene with the rights to broadcast the Barclays Premier League (in the country) for three years. Those rights had been acquired at a considerably greater cost, a situation that forced HiTv's rival, MultiChoice, to pull out from the broadcast of the EPL. HiTv, complete with the Barclays Premier League, was offering a lower subscription. It did not work as the company planned.

It could never have worked because the cost of acquisition was exponential. Three years later, the company could not raise the money to renew the deal to keep broadcasting the Barclays Premier League. That, however, was not the end of the matter. On account of the high cost following HITv's high bid the last time, the cost of watching the EPL in Africa had gone up forever. Subsequently, the owners of the Barclays Premier League have never sold at the same or even a lower price. Costs do not stay the same, as content production and content owners are also affected by local and international indices, including currency exchange rates. Since then, the cost has kept going up.

'I will be at the Tribunal tomorrow' - Saraki says

Posted: 21 Sep 2015 08:47 AM PDT

Senate President Bukola Saraki says he will be at the Code of Conduct Tribunal tomorrow September 22nd as a mark of respect for the rule of law. He said this in a statement he released this afternoon on his Facebook page
The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki will appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal tomorrow Tuesday 22nd of September 2015. While the Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, had stated and maintained that he is ready to submit himself to due process of the law on any issue concerning him, he also believes that he has an inalienable right to resort to the same judiciary for protection when he feels his fundamental rights are about to be infringed upon.
The Senate President is a law abiding citizen and his absence from tribunal was based on legal advice he received from his counsel that it is not necessary for him to appear before the tribunal at this stage since the jurisdiction of the tribunal and the process of initiating the matter are being challenged before the federal High Court Abuja.

Following the adjournment for the determination of the motion on notice and the substantive suit before the Federal High Court to 30th of September and the appeal pending before the Court of Appeal adjourned to the 29th of September 2015, the Senate President has decided, as a law abiding citizen, to appear before the Tribunal in the interim.

Dr. Saraki has taken the decision to attend the Tribunal sitting to demonstrate his respect for the rule of law in spite of his personal reservation on the process of his trial and the purpose it may be intended to serve.

Dr. Saraki wishes to assure Nigerians of his absolute belief in the judicial process and is therefore confident that the course of justice would be served at the end of this matter.

Man raped and murdered a woman's 14-month-old child after she refused to have sex with him

Posted: 21 Sep 2015 08:41 AM PDT

Acording to Daily Sun SA, the deal between the young mother and the man, a taxi driver was that they would go drinking and then have sex afterwards but when she changed her mind the man kidnapped, raped and murdered her baby.

On Friday night Sept. 18th, 20 year old Asithandile Mazomba allegedly went drinking with a taxi driver in Kanana Section, Tembisa in Ekurhuleni, South Africa but took her 14-month-old daughter, Elam, with her to the tavern.

A friend of the young mother told Daily Sun, that Asithandile and the driver agreed at the tavern they would go to her place later and he would sleep over.
"But later she refused to have sex with him," said the friend.
She said the two were seen arguing loudly outside the tavern before they drove off.

Speaking to Daily Sun at her home in Ivory Park extension 2 on Saturday night, Asithandile confirmed she went drinking with a taxi driver and his friend but said she never made a sex deal.
"We never went to the tavern because it was closed. Later we dropped the friend off, but when we got to my place the driver pulled out a screwdriver and threatened me," she said.
She said she jumped out of the moving car with the child. "My daughter fell on me and the man grabbed the baby and raced off. I immediately went to the police station, but the man was nowhere to be found."

The following morning a resident told her a baby's body had been found in the bushes.

Captain Jethro Mtshali said they found a dead baby in the veld after a call from a resident. The suspect (27) was found five hours later driving the same taxi. He was detained and will appear in the Tembisa Magistrates Court today. Asithandile had to be saved from angry residents who wanted to beat her up.

Posted: 21 Sep 2015 08:22 AM PDT

Last week during an interview with The Breakfast Club, rapper Waka Flocka Flame slammed the transgender community, saying they, including Caitlyn Jenner were rebuking God and allowing the devil to control their thoughts.
"I ain't saying nothing against like a Bruce Jenner, you follow me, you are who you are when God made you, not who you became after he did. That's how I just feel. You rebuking God. God ain't put those feelings in you, that's the devil playing tricks on your mind. That's a test from God."
Of course, there was heavy backlash and Waka later apologized and clarified his statement. See that after the cut...
