Muslim flight attendant files complaint against her employer for suspending her because she refused to serve alcohol

Posted: 06 Sep 2015 12:41 PM PDT

Charee Stanley, 40, says she was suspended by Express Jet for refusing to serve alcohol in accordance with her Islamic faith. According to CNN, she filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Tuesday September 2nd for the revocation of a reasonable religious accommodation.

She wants to do her job without serving alcohol in accordance with her Islamic faith -- just as she was doing before her suspension.
"What this case comes down to is no one should have to choose between their career and religion and it's incumbent upon employers to provide a safe environment where employees can feel they can practice their religion freely," said Lena Masri, an attorney with Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Charee started working for ExpressJet nearly three years ago. About two years ago she converted to Islam. This year she learned her faith prohibits her from not only consuming alcohol but serving it, too, Masri said. She approached her supervisor on June 1 and was told to work out an arrangement for someone to fulfill passenger requests for alcohol.

"It was at the direction of the airlines that she began coordinating with the other flight attendant on duty so that when a passenger requested alcohol, the other flight attendant would accommodate that request," Masri said. "We know that this arrangement has worked beautifully and without incident and that it hasn't caused any undue burden on the airline. After all, it was the suggestion of the airline."

It seemed to be working out until another flight attendant filed a complaint against Stanley on August 2 claiming she was not fulfilling her duties by refusing to serve alcohol, Masri said. The employee complaint also said Stanley had a book with "foreign writings" and wore a headdress.

On August 25, the airline sent a letter to Stanley informing her that it was revoking its religious accommodation to exclude her from service of alcohol and placing her on administrative leave.

"They placed her on unpaid leave and they advised her that her employment may be terminated after 12 months," Masri said. "We are requesting that her employment be reinstated and the accommodation of her religious beliefs be reinstated as well."

A spokesman for Express Jet declined to discuss Stanley's complaint. "At Express Jet, we embrace and respect the values of all of our team members. We are an equal opportunity employer with a long history of diversity in our workforce. As Ms. Stanley is an employee, we are not able to comment on her personnel matters," spokesman Jarek Beem said in an email.

Majority of people online said she should even be fired. What do you think? or as CNN asked, is it religious freedom or discrimination?

You have failed to deliver your 100-day in office promises- Nigerian students tell Buhari

Posted: 06 Sep 2015 12:06 PM PDT

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has accused President Buhari of not fulfilling his '100 days in office' promises which he made during his campaign. In a letter tagged "Let the change be realistic, not a mantra" signed by NANS Vice President on National Affairs, Comrade Timileyin Gbenga Ayenuro, the student body expressed its disappointment...read it after the cut...

The National Association of Nigerian Students [NANS], the apex students' body in Nigeria, expresses disappointment and worries over the non-fulfillment of the 100-day in office promises that President Muhammadu Buhari earlier made during the 2015 Presidential Election and the denial of such vows by the media machinery of The Presidency.

RECALL ON BUHARI'S PROMISES DURING CAMPAIGN
During Mohammadu Buhari's Presidential campaign, it should be recalled that a public letter was published by the President titled, "My Covenant". He made no fewer than thirteen promises to Nigerian in the document which are: Reduction of fuel price to N45 per liter; Subsidize oil price at $100 a barrel; pay the poorest 25 million people N5, 000 every month; guarantee 40,000 megawatts of electricity in four years; Post NYSC Stipends; provision of Free meal ticket per day for all Nigerian school children and also provision of three million jobs in his first year in office.

To the utmost surprise of every Nigerian students, President Muhammadu Buhari, has not only failed to deliver on his numerous "100-day in Office promises", the president and his media machinery are intentionally and falsely, in the bid to cover the ineptitude of failing the "100-day integrity test" in the court of public opinion, denying these lofty promises made during the electioneering campaign.
Also, he promised to build four refineries in one year; provide free education to all Nigerian children, conquer Boko Haram in two months, payment of allowance to Graduate job seekers, Tackling Child Labour, Graduate Employment, Nationwide Environmental Sanitation Plan, No foreign Health Care for Government officials, 20% Education Budget, Just Farm, Government Buys Policy, Educating the Girl Child, An Independent EFCC and ICPC, Establishment of Office of Public Defender, Protecting Freedom of Speech, More Government spending on Health, Improving National Security, Prompt and stress free pension payment, Addressing Ethno Religious Tolerance, A fair deal with women and Corruption Free Election.

With the aforementioned lofty promises, Nigerians taught the change they expected had come. But amazingly, after 100 days in office, Buhari whom they described as 'Baba Go Slow' because of his sluggishness in executing government policies has not achieved any of the promises.

NIGERIANS EXPECTATIONS
Muhammadu Buhari should learn that Nigerians mean business and ready to see developments around the nooks and crannies of the country. Nigerians believe that terrorism will be a thing of the past, corruption will be a forgone issue. Nigerians believe that the new president should find a lasting solution to the backlog of unpaid salaries, perennial fuel scarcity, fuel subsidy regime, cost of governance, institutionalized corruption, insecurity, erratic power supply, poorly-developed education and all other human endeavors. The clock is ticking!

OUR TAKE ON RECENT APPOINTMENTS
Also, it is disheartening and perhaps, indicative of the direction the administration of President Buhari is heading with respect to the lopsided appointments made so far. He is just being driven by the passion to salvage a 'perceived' sinking state, irrespective of who is negatively affected. He needs to know that we have a federation that should be run through established laws. All the federating units must be part of the government to avoid unnecessary litigation against constitutional violations. There are still many more appointments to be made and Nigerians are watching to see what will happen.
IMPLEMENTATION OF NATIONAL CONFAB REPORT
Furthermore, we urge the Federal Government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the recommendations contained in the National Conference report because it is the only way to solve Nigeria's myriad of political and economic problems. Buhari must do whatever is necessary to ensure the
implementation of the confab report. The implementation will further re-launch and revamp the nation. Non- implementation of the report will amount to turning deaf ear to the voice of the people. Since governance is about people, government should do what the people want.
WORDS OF ENCOURGEMENT TO NIGERIANS
We still enjoin all well-meaning Nigerians to repose their faith in solemn assurance of a new, united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria and join hands together with the Federal Government to re-invent governance, entrench freedom and democratic ethos, create jobs, eradicate poverty, build infrastructure, sustain businesses, secure lives and properties, re-enact the essence and value of peaceful co-existence among Nigerians and restore the lost glories, hopes, faith and confidence of our people under this current administration.
Comrade Timileyin Gbenga, AYENURO
The Vice President, National Affairs, National Association of Nigerian Students [NANS]

Amen! Lagos State government restricts trailers from plying roads from 6am to 9pm

Posted: 06 Sep 2015 11:26 AM PDT

What we prayed for. Hopefully, the owners of these trailers & their drivers will adhere to this. Lagos State Government today announced that trailers and articulated vehicles are no longer allowed to ply the city between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. to prevent accidents following the fatal one that occurred on September 2nd.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Oluseyi Whenu, disclosed this at a meeting in Lagos with the leadership of the various transport unions in the State. He explained that the restriction was to ensure strict enforcement of the Road Traffic Law, which, according to him, was often violated by the trailer drivers. He said the government would henceforth go tough on any trailer that contravenes the law.

Jim Iyke and Lithuanian girlfriend welcome baby boy (photos)

Posted: 06 Sep 2015 11:05 AM PDT

Jim Iyke did a great job hiding his relationship from Nigerian media...who knew he was dating a white woman and had a baby with her? According to The African Eye magazine, who sent the photos to LIB, Jim and his 23 year old Lithuanian girlfriend Dana Kinduryte welcomed a baby boy on September 1st at Grady Hospital, Atlanta. The child has since been named Harvis Chidubem Iyke.

According to African Eye, Jim met Dana, a law graduate in London over a year ago but she didn't even know he was a famous actor until three months after they started dating.

Five months after the couple found out they were expecting a child, Jim moved Dana into his apartment in Atlanta where he cared for her. Jim was said to be present and assisted in the delivery of his first child.
"My son. After trying a few relationships in the industry at home, I didn't want the circus and misconceptions that came from close scrutiny so I spared no expense and resources to protect this relationship and my baby. This time last year I was in depression over my mom's death. This time around I'm in tears of joy". Jim was quoted as saying
Many of his friends and colleagues are said to be surprised about the baby news as most didn't know he was expecting one. Congrats to Jim and Dana

Adesina's appointment shows I had a good team - GEJ

Posted: 06 Sep 2015 10:50 AM PDT

Former President Jonathan says that the recent appointment of former Minister of Agriculture Akinwunmi Adesina as the 8th President of the African Development Bank, AfDB, is an attestation to the fact that he had a very good team during his administration. Jonathan said this in a congratulatory letter he sent to Adesina on his new appointment
"Given your exemplary record of performance, while serving as the Honourable Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in my cabinet, I have no doubt that you will deploy your energy and the bank's resources to ensure that Africa experiences a new era of accelerated development.
You were not only a critical voice in my economic team, you also walked the talk, and earned the praise of our countrymen and women, by ensuring that Nigeria's quest for self-sufficiency in food production became an achievable dream. I am particularly pleased with your emergence as the AfDB boss; a development, I believe, has come as a reward for having served your country meritoriously.  It also attests to the fact that my Administration had a good team that managed the affairs of the country."the letter read
In a related development, Jonathan in a congratulatory letter to Arunma Oteh, the former DG of the Security Exchange Commission during his administration, said her appointment as the Treasurer/Vice President of the World Bank also attest to the fact that he had the best in his team while he was president

"I am delighted that you are going to your new job, fresh from the experience of having led the recovery and growth initiatives of the Nigerian Bourse in the wake of the decline, occasioned by recent global economic recession and financial crisis. I am particularly pleased that you are being rewarded and elevated on the world stage, after serving your country meritoriously, at a time I was the President. This is a clear testimony to your capacity, high integrity, and tenacity of purpose. It is also a vindication of the decision of my Administration to stand by you, believing in your abilities and competence, even when questions were being raised in some quarters over your choice.

I am convinced that the experience you gathered as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Nigeria (SEC) gave you deep insights on how to tackle the peculiar challenges of a developing nation. The World Bank can draw from this to ensure that its future partnerships with emerging economies in Africa and other parts of the world are anchored on policies that will lead to sustained growth and development, which is a sine qua non for lifting millions of people in the developing world out of mass poverty."

Three sisters give birth on the same day at the same hospital

Posted: 06 Sep 2015 10:17 AM PDT

In an unlikely coincidence, three Irish sisters gave birth on the same day at the same hospital. And what's more remarkable is that their fourth sister was expected to give birth sometime soon after her 3 sisters! Mairead Fitzpatrick and her sisters Joeline Godfrey and Bernie Ward all gave birth at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar on Tuesday.

While the siblings were given close due dates, they never expected their babies to share the same birthday.

"We never thought it would all happen on the one day," says Fitzpatrick, who gave birth to her son first at 3:25 a.m. The new mom named him Thomás Óg.
At 11 a.m, Joeline welcomed her daughter, Sorcha, via C-section, and finally around 8:30 p.m., Bernie gave birth to her son Phelim.
"The two girls that delivered my little boy delivered Bernie's boy as well," Fitzpatrick said. "So two women delivered two cousins in 24 hours."
The hospital staff was just as surprised by the remarkable coincidence as the sisters were.
"We're all talking about it... the fact that we have four sisters in and it's never happened, as far as we know anyway, going back some time," said maternity manager Mary Salmon.
Christina Murray, the fourth sister, is now waiting for her little one to arrive. Her due date was on August 30.
"It was just so funny the way it happened really," Fitzpatrick said. "It was my first, Joeline's second and Bernie's third and it'll be Christina's fourth."
