Photo: US warns of 'terrorist' attack threat in South Africa

The United States embassy in South Africa on Tuesday, September 8 issued a rare 'terrorist threat' warning to US interests in the country, and advised its citizens to be on heightened alert against attack, AFP reports. The security message issued by the embassy in Pretoria said there was no information on the possible timing or target in South Africa.
Extremists may be targeting US interests in South Africa, to possibly include US Government facilities and other facilities identifiable with US business interests," the embassy statement said.
Remain aware and vigilant of your surroundings. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security."
A spokesman for the South African ministry of state security told AFP that the government was aware of the US announcement, but that it had no immediate comment.

The embassy issued a general security alert last week ahead of the September 11 attacks anniversary, but the warning on Tuesday appeared to signal a new level of concern. Security analyst Ryan Cummings said the US had last issued a "terror threat" in South Africa in 2009.

The embassy was unable to confirm the date. "One would not immediately associate South Africa with Islamic extremism, which is the driver of international terrorism against US interests," said Cummings, a Cape Town-based analyst at Red 24, a risk management firm.

"We haven't had an extensive history of transnational terrorists targeting US interests (but) there has been evidence that South Africa serves as some form of a gateway or potential logistics and financial hub. "The fact that this warning speaks specifically to South Africa means the perceived threat is specifically within our borders."

Michelle Obama blasted for calling Beyonce a 'role model'

If Beyonce is not a role model, I don't know anybody else who is. A tweet from the US First Lady wishing Beyonce a happy birthday and calling her a role model caused an online uproar on Beyoncé's birthday. Some didn't agree that the singer is a role model. Most of the negative tweets focused on the way she dresses, her behavior on stage and in videos, her 'sexually explicit' lyrics, her husband's violent past, and allegations that she has used or does use drugs. A LIB reader sent this in. She sent in her email for those who want to adopt her child to contact her but I deleted that as that is not the purpose of me posting this. I'm hoping you guys will talk her out of giving her baby up. Read below..
"I was in a relationship which was supposed to end in marriage but then everything changed when I got pregnant. It wasn't my intention to hook him with pregnancy but I'm just a victim of circumstance. I wanted to go through taking care of the child alone but now I just can't because financially I am not buoyant enough. The baby is three months old and I am looking for a nice family to adopt her. Please help me post this on your blog so that any interested person can contact me through you or my email. I've had plenty of time to think about this and my mind is made up that this is the only option. Thanks a lot.

The inaugural edition of the writemothers initiative was held at TBWA\Concept on the 3rd of Sept. This is a first of its kind initiative in the marketing communications industry by TBWA\Concept to increase the number of women in advertising, empower stay-at-home mums, give them an avenue to make additional income, engage them, knowing that they are able to multi task. 




The event was opened by TBWA\CONCEPT's M.D and AAAN President, Kelechi Nwosu who introduced the first speaker, Mrs Bola Thomas, former AAAN President and one of the founders of LTC Advertising. In her capacity as one of the pioneer women in advertising in Nigeria, she talked about the historical challenges for women in Advertising, stressing that "women should be empowered and not be limited by their gender"

There was a talk on Women and Creativity by the 2014 winner of  NTA's Queen Nigeria beauty pageant, Diamond Okoh, who challenged women not to stick to the status quo and pursue their dreams. The finalists were then presented with their certificates of participation and inducted into the TBWA\CONCEPT family.

As a start of their learning and development , a creative writing workshop facilitated by Mrs Ijeoma Oqwuegbu-Uduma, a script writer for MNET Nigeria (Tinsel and Hotel Majestic) introduced our new WriteMothers to the essentials of creative writing.

Ranti Atunwa, Creative Director, TBWA\CONCEPT, rounded up the event by sharing some of the creative standards expected of them and also outlining the overall aims and benefits of the WriteMothers initiative to women, mothers and the industry as a whole.

To end the event on a lighter note, there were a lot of pictures and signed autographs from the President (AAAN)

More married women getting into drug abuse – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has decried the increasing involvement of married women in drug abuse. According to Daily Trust. the Assistant Superintendent in charge of Exhibits at the Sokoto State Command, Ali Baba Mustapha, said this at the Jigawa Day celebration organised by indigenes of the state at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto yesterday.

He said women took cough syrups that contained codeine believing that it would enhance their sexual appetite. Mustapha warned that if unchecked, this trend could generate into marital crisis and even divorce. He dismissed the belief that cough syrups enhances sexual appetite.

MTNN outlets now open till 8pm daily for SIM registration/revalidation

As part of efforts to bring relief to its esteemed customers, MTN Nigeria has announced an extension in the closing hours of its SIM registration and revalidation outlets till 8pm, with an increased number of staff to cater to subscribers who want to register or revalidate their SIM cards.

Announcing the extension, Mr. Akinwale Goodluck, MTN Corporate Services Executive, said "we have increased the number of staff across our customer service outlets to cater for the SIM registration and revalidation of our esteemed subscribers across all our channels.

We have also mandated all our registration outlets to remain open till 8pm every day during this period.


This is to ensure that all MTN Nigeria subscribers whose lines were disconnected or experiencing difficulty in using their SIMs can easily register and revalidate their lines".



Affected customers can revalidate their registration details at all MTN service outlets, agents, dealer shops and sales outlets. The registration is free and customers are urged to report suspicions of any fraudulent activity to the nearest MTN manager at their respective locations.



The telecoms operator also appealed to its subscribers to remain calm as the company is committed to ensuring that all affected subscribers complete the process as directed by NCC.

Declare your assets now- Ekiti APC tells Fayose

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has asked the state governor Ayodele Fayose to declare his assets in line with President Buhari and VP Osinbajo, who he always criticizes.

In a statement released today September 8 and signed by its Publicity secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party accused Fayose of having properties in Ghana, Dubai, South Africa, Abuja, Ibadan & Ikoyi.


"The governor must seize the opportunity of declaring his assets to douse speculations of his alleged funneling of the state resources to his private enterprises abroad. It is curious that he has not abused President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo after they declared their assets. Fayose's loud silence on the President in this case is curious because the governor has never seen anything good in whatever the President does. We are worried by the unconfirmed reports of primitive acquisitions by the governor who allegedly own properties in Ghana, Dubai, South Africa, Abuja, Ibadan and Banana Islands and Magodo in Lagos which were believed to have been acquired in the last nine months after he assumed office. Our party is aware that Fayose had no visible means of income prior to October 16, 2014 when he became governor and the properties he owned in Ibadan and Lagos are subjects of litigation by the EFCC, which is probing the governor for misappropriation and diversion of N1.3b poultry project cash to personal use in 2005. "Fayose is alleged to be building a state-of-the-art hotel in Dubai after he became Ekiti governor and after he is also reported to have paid a whopping N722 million to himself as "arrears of his allowances" as governor during his first term on the strength of the Supreme Court judgment which nullified his impeachment. Curiously too, Fayose has kept mute on various sums of money he has received on behalf of the state government, such as the N22 billion refund on Federal roads, N2billion ecological fund, N2billion micro credit fund, which he has diverted, N2.1 billion bailout NLNG fund, N9.6 billion bailout cash, N8.5 billion windfall received in June and an average of N3billion regular federal allocations he has been receiving since October 2014 till date. It would be recalled that in his former declaration of assets in 2003, the governor allegedly swore to an oath declaring two barren lands in a thick forest as two completed mansions in Ibadan, the properties the EFCC later confirmed as properties built with the alleged proceeds of the fraudulent poultry project four years after he became the governor. The recent appointment by Fayose of a 72 year old illiterate as a council boss and many others of his yes-men in other Council areas has fuelled our suspicion that he has successfully converted the resources of Local governments to his personal use without being accountable to anyone. It has thus become a matter of necessity for Mr. Fayose to declare his assets"the party said. The party added it might have to consider legal action if the state governor fails to declare his assets "We will stop at nothing to make sure that Fayose declares his assets openly so that we could remind him if he leaves any of his assets undeclared,"the statement read

Army uncovers plot to undermine counter-insurgency operation

The Nigerian Army says it has uncovered plans by some international media organizations in partnership with collaborators in Nigeria to undermine ongoing operations to end insurgency in the country by accusing it of human rights violations. In a statement released today by the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, the army said such actions, if not addressed, will thwart the gains they have so far recorded in the fight against Boko Haram.


The statement in part reads
 "It has come to our knowledge that some foreign media, Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) and some of their Nigerian affiliates are about to start making false claims of human rights violations by the Nigerian Army. It is clear that these groups and their collaborators are not happy with the progress made in the efforts to solve the security problems bedeviling our nation as manifested in the terrorists' activities. The implication of such act is not lost on us as it is capable of thwarting the gains in the fight against terrorism and insurgency. We would not condone any human rights abuses. Where there are allegations of human rights violation by any individual or group, this would be thoroughly investigated and those found guilty would be brought to book in accordance with extant laws. Therefore, the Nigerian Army would not succumb to blackmail and neither would it be distracted from its determined effort of defending the territorial integrity of our great nation and safeguarding the security of its citizens,''he said
