Glo's subscriber base climbs to 36.3m, adds 5m new lines in 1 year Posted: 14 Aug 2016 11:18 AM PDT Telecom industry reports show that the GSM subscriber base of data grandmasters, Globacom, has in the last one year increased sharply by 5,063,895. The company's number of customers which stood at 31,256,677 by June 2015 rose to 36,320,572 at the end of June this year. The new 5,063,895 customers represented 68% of the 7,477,977 additional GSM lines in the country in the last 12 months. The latest statistics published on the website of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed that Airtel placed second on the table with 2,414,082 new customers or 32%. However, it was reverse fortunes for MTN and Etisalat as they both suffered losses. While Etisalat lost 382,336 customers, MTN's subscriber base went down by 4, 403,344 in the last one year. Details of the NCC report showed that Globacom's market share has risen from 21% to 24%, while MTN which once overwhelmingly dominated the sector by over 45% suffered a significant reduction to 39% as it recorded 58.4m subscribers compared to 62,813,111 it had a year ago. Thus, while Glo has reduced the gap between it and MTN, it has substantially widened the gap between it and Airtel. Both Glo and Airtel previously had the same 21% market share a few months ago, with Glo enjoying a marginal lead then. Airtel which had 29,564,766 subscribers at the middle of last year, had 31,978,848 customers at the end of June 2016. This still keeps it at 21% share of the GSM market. Fourth operator Etisalat has 15% share with 22,469,896 customers at the end of June, 2016, compared to 22,852,232 in June last year. Globacom has also for the last one and half years been the leader in the data market. |

Nigerian Army releases statement after declaring Journalist Ahmad Salkida wanted Posted: 14 Aug 2016 10:26 AM PDT The statement released by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations, reads
We also appealed to Nigerians that have any information to volunteer to the military or security agencies to enable us rescue them. However, two recent incidents have pointed to the fact that, there are three individuals namely; Ahmed Salkida, (Ambassador) Ahmed U. Bolori and Aisha Wakil that have information on the conditions and the exact location of these girls. Therefore, the Nigerian Army hereby declare the two gentlemen and the lady wanted for interrogation. We are relying on the relevant laws of the land and in particular the Terrorism Prevention Act 2011 (as amended) where Nigerians could be punished for failure to disclose information about terrorists or terrorists activities. This become necessary as a result of their link with the last two videos released by Boko Haram Terrorists and other findings of our preliminary investigations. There is no doubt that these individuals have links with Boko Haram Terrorists and have contacts with them. They must therefore come forward and tell us where the group is keeping the Chibok Girls and other abducted persons to enable us rescue them. We are therefore calling on all Nigerians and peace loving people to give us useful information on their whereabouts. We are also liaising with other security agencies for their arrest if they failed to turn up. |
Why I am Contesting for Publicity Secretary of PDP -Deji Adeyanju Posted: 14 Aug 2016 10:16 AM PDT Read his statement below... My name is Prince Deji Adeyanju and I have been a member of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) for several years. I am a firm believer in its principles and ideals. I also believe that PDP is the only truly national party in Nigeria and is, therefore, best placed to deliver successful achievement of the collective ideals and aspirations of the Nigerian people. While I recognise that the party is by no means perfect, I am aware that over the years it has deepened democracy in the country and has contributed immensely to the growth and development of Nigeria as a whole. Following the defeat PDP suffered in the last general elections, and the zoning of the office of the National Publicity Secretary (NPS) to the North Central Region of the country, I have decided to contest for the office and a place on the National Working Committee of the party. I believe I possess the skills, ability and the personality to make an outstanding contribution to the task of improving the image of the party. It is for this reason that I solicit the support of all members of the party as I work to actualise this ambition. In return for your support, I pledge to give my best in the day to day activities of the office. I pledge to ensure that the image of the party, the protection and polishing of which is the objective of the Directorate of Publicity, will be significantly better at the end of my tenure than the way I met it. I pledge to execute my duties with exemplary discipline and dedication to duty. In return for your support, I pledge to bring a new way of doing things to the Publicity Secretariat of the party. I pledge to lead a revolution that will not only strengthen the faith that members and supporters have in the party, but which will also convince millions of Nigerians that as a party PDP has their best interests at heart and is the most viable vehicle with which to deliver on our collective dreams & aspirations. This way, together with the leadership of the party, I believe that we can make this party great again. Thank you. Deji Adeyanju |

Photos: Pope Francis meets with Nigerian women rescued from prostitution in Italy Posted: 14 Aug 2016 09:57 AM PDT Pope Francis on Friday, August 12, visited a refugee centre in Rome housing women rescued from forced prostitution as part of his 'Friday of Mercy' gestures during this Jubilee Year of Mercy. During his visit, the Pontiff met with the 20 women rescued from the sex trade who were trafficked from their countries, including Nigeria, Romania, Albania,Tunisia, Ukraine, and Italy. All of the women were the victims of severe physical abuse during their ordeal and are living under protection in the home run by the Pope John the 23rd community. A statement from the Holy See Press office said the Pope's visit to this refugee centre is another reminder of the need to fight against human trafficking, which the Pope has described as "a crime against humanity" and "an open wound on the body of contemporary society, a scourge upon the body of Christ". |
Audience Revolt Saves Winner From Eviction! Posted: 14 Aug 2016 09:56 AM PDT There are myriad of reasons why MTN Project Fame remains West Africa's number one music reality show; one of which is the fantastic vocal talents on display. While the contestants battle for the fame and fortune that comes with winning the reality TV show, sometimes the journey may end up in the bitter disappointment of eviction. And when the sword of eviction descends, it is the end of the road as far as the affected contestants' stay in the Academy is concerned.... However history was made during the second elimination show at the ongoing MTN Project Fame Season 9 as an audience revolt during the live show led to the reinstatement of an evicted contestant. Winner, who alongside Solomon, were initially slated for eviction was saved as the audience protested the decision to evict Winner. The show kicked off with a fabulous performance from the all contestants. The atmosphere was tense as no one wanted their favourite contestant out of the show. Yusuph, Solomon, Winner, Mirabel and Pere were on probation and had to prove themselves once again to remain in the academy. After their performances, Yusuph was saved by the audience's votes, Pere was saved by the Project Fame faculty and Mirabel was saved by the other contestants. It became a very emotional moment for the contestants and the audience as Solomon and Winner said their goodbyes. Winner had won the heart of the audience and they were not ready to see her leave the show. Even Praiz, project fame alumnus and new Judge, offered to do a song collaboration with the both of them. Just as she was about to do her final performance, the crowd broke into chanting, requesting that Winner remains in the academy. In the end, the Faculty and the Judges decided to give her another chance and she was readmitted into the Academy, amid tumultuous applause from the audience. She may have survived eviction this time, but, how far will Winner go in MTN Project Fame season 9? Catch exciting episodes.... |

#SaveMayowa wasn't a scam after all...my apologies to the family! Posted: 14 Aug 2016 12:29 PM PDT People who know me well will tell you that the easiest and fastest way to get money out of me is to tell me you're sick. I hate seeing people that helpless. Over the years, I've donated and also used my platform to raise money for several sick people, including Mayowa Ahmed. Early morning on July 28th, I received a call saying the #SaveMayowa campaign was a scam. That the lady was terminally ill and the family had no intentions of using the money raised for her health to treat her as they had no invite from the hospital in Atlanta, neither did she even have a visa to the US. Please continue... They wanted me to blog it quickly so people could stop donating. I found it hard to believe at first but it was coming from people who were directly involved in raising money for the sick girl. I sent someone to LUTH to investigate, he got there and found chaos. The Police was already involved, people were being questioned, some folks were shouting, he spoke to people in the hospital and many seemed confused. I spoke with those who had called me, and they said 1000%, the whole thing was a scam. And I sincerely believe that at the time they told me this, they genuinely believed it to be a fact. I don't think it was done maliciously. After they sent me documents showing the hospital in Atlanta was not really involved in Mayowa's treatment and LUTH medical directors denied knowledge of a fund raising for the sick girl, I believed it to also be a fact! And I wrote it. My mistake, I think, was owning the story, I probably should have quoted them. And maybe investigated more. My apologies to the family! The post has since been taken down. After investigating properly, the police found it wasn't a scam, that it was more a miscommunication between the parties helping to raise funds and the girl's family. I spoke about the issue with the Lagos police PPRO and she assured me that the family didn't have bad intentions. The happy news is that Mayowa has been flown to South Africa for treatment. She left Nigeria on Thursday August 11th. May God use her case to show that He is God! Let's continue to pray for her! Linda |
