Hurray Kogi is 25!

I, wish to heartily felicitate with the Executive Governor of the state, His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello, the Deputy Governor, Prince Simon Achuba, the Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon Mohammed Imam and the entire good people of the state on the celebration of silver jubilee of the state.

It was first an idea, it became an agitation and just before we knew it, it became a reality. Now it is 25 years and we roll out the drums to celebrate God's mercy. The attainment of 25 years old in the life    of a human being is no mean feat. It is a sign of maturity.

Indeed, Kogi has come of age and we are happy that in spite of initial distractions, when we look back in the last 25 years, we can confidently say that the dreams and vision of our founding fathers are now finding true expressions, especially with the renewed Vigor and vision  of the Yahaya Bello-led administration.

It is against this background that I  congratulate all Kogites at home and in the Diasporas on this land mark occasion of the state turning 25. Twenty-five years in the life of the state is by no means insignificant.

While assuring you of the resolve of the present government to drive the state on the path of sustainable development, I seek your support for the administration to realize its goal to make the state the cynosure of all eyes.
It's possible..... We can......And we shall!

Congratulations once again!

Signed:
 Her Excellency, Mrs Rashida Bello
 Kogi State First Lady

French court suspends ban on Muslim women swimwear 'Burkini'

Posted: 26 Aug 2016 09:27 AM PDT

France's highest administrative court has ruled that the ban on muslim female swimwear 'burkini' being enforced on the country's beaches are illegal and a violation of fundamental liberties. More than 30 French towns have banned burkinis, which cover the whole body except for the face, hands and feet.  Officials say the ban on the burkini was a response to growing terror concerns.
Human rights activists however argued that such measures are illegal, and that pushes to outlaw the garment are Islamophobic. The ruling of the State Council suspends the ban in the town of Villeneuve-Loubet, near Nice, and this could now affect cities around the country that have prohibited the full-length swimsuit.

In their ruling, three senior judges said the ban was clearly an illegal blow to fundamental liberties such as the freedom of movement, freedom of conscience and personal liberty. They found that no evidence produced in favour of the prohibition proved a risk to public order was being caused by women wearing such swimwear.

Four surveyors who drowned in Ekiti river not World Bank officials – Agency says

Posted: 26 Aug 2016 09:14 AM PDT

There were reports online yesterday that the four surveyors that died in the boat mishap at the Egbe River in Ekiti state on Wednesday August 24th (read here), were World bank staff. The Third National Urban Water Sector Reform agency whose project the deceased persons were working on, this morning released a statement making the clarification that the deceased persons namely Alaran Tirimisiyu, Abdulwaheed Alayande, David Malu and Albert, were not staff members of the World bank. Read the statement below...

"The Unfortunate drowning of four workmen working as topo-surveyors on Egbe Dam is highly regretted and unfortunate and a loss too many. The Third National Urban Water Sector Reform Project is a project funded by the World Bank with a target to achieve maximum reform in Ekiti State water sector. While we lament the sad loss, we wish to state that the Consultant was awarded the assignment to carry out Bathymetry Survey of four dams in the state biz: Ureje, Egbe, Itapaji and Ero. The sad incident happened because some safety measures were not adhered to by the deceased: refusal to wear life jackets and those who survived wore life jackets provided by the company. It should be noted that neither World Bank official nor Water Corporation staff member was involved. Ekiti State Government commiserates with the families of the departed and pray God to grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss."

Hollywood actress Tika Sumpter reacts to Chimamanda Adichie's controversial claims about Michelle Obama's natural hair

Posted: 26 Aug 2016 09:08 AM PDT

American actress and model Tika Sumpter has reacted to Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's seemingly controversial comments where she concluded that president Obama would not have been elected if the FLOTUS rocked her natural hair.

Sumpter and co-star Parker Sawyers are set to bring the Obamas' love story to life on the big screen, playing young Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama in the film "Southside With You"

In an August 9th interview with Britain's Channel 4 News, Ms Adichie says that Mrs Obama could not get away with natural hair because of the negative stereotypes associated with it, adding that the first lady's natural hair would prevent Barack Obama from being elected president in 2008.

"I've often said that if Michelle Obama had natural hair when Barack Obama was running for President, he would not have won because her natural hair would have signified certain things to people. It would signify that she's some sort of militant, neo-Black Panther, frightening" Adichie explains.

In a recent interview on BET, the 36-year-old The Haves and the Have Nots star who is expecting her first child, was asked about the Nigerian writer's comment.

"You can have natural hair and still blow it out and it'll be straight," she started saying. "I've had hair where it looked permed but it wasn't. It was in my natural state but I just blew it out. I don't know. I mean... What does that mean?"

Parker chipped in, saying just the fact that they earned their spot in the White House as an African-American family is proof enough that nothing else matters.

"I would say that Barack Hussein Obama... Who thought he could be president?" he said. "Then who thought a Black family would be in the White House anyway? No offense to the author, but I think he still would've been elected."

"I don't know if I can even answer that question," Tika added. "I think the character of these two would've shined through regardless. Natural hair or not. I don't really know. I mean, I understand what she's saying, but I don't really know about that. That's a pretty intense statement because you're basing an outside characteristic on the character of the human being."

'I've always known I am a woman, my brain has always been female' - Nigerian Trans Miss Sahhara

Posted: 26 Aug 2016 08:11 AM PDT

Nigerian transsexual and beauty queen Miss SaHHara said she has always been a woman and would have killed herself if she had not moved to the United Kingdom.

In an exclusive podcast interview with NostringsNG- Voice of Lgbt Nigeria, a Nigerian based LGBT radio station, the model and Trans right activist, said that it is not true that she suddenly decided to be a woman overnight.

"Being a woman and living in your true gender is not a lifestyle. There was no time of epiphany, it's like someone asking you when you decided to be male or female, am sure your answer will be, since you were born. So I have always known that I am female, my brain has always been female"

Miss SaHHara was crowned the first super Sireyna, a global transgender pageant in Philippine for exceptional individuals with talent, grace and brain on one of Philippines biggest daytime television show called Eat Bulaga on GMA Network, where she represented Nigeria, surprising a total number of over 1.4million people who ended up viewing the show.

The Idoma-born, Benue State Trans singer/songwriter, whose real name is Clifford Oche, also spoke about why she decided to move away from Nigeria.

"Moving to the United Kingdom was my redemption, it was either staying in Nigeria, continue being bullied, harassed, beaten up, and succeed in killing myself, or moving away to a more open minded society to leave my dreams to my fullest potentials, so I took the latter"

She will be representing Nigeria in the upcoming 2016Miss Trans Star International pageant that will be held in Bercelona, Spain, on September 7th.

Photos: Richard Branson escapes death after a cycling accident: "I really thought I was going to die"

Posted: 26 Aug 2016 08:04 AM PDT

Founder of Virgin Group Sir Richard Branson escaped death after crashing his bike close to a cliff edge on Caribbean island Virgin Gorda.

The 66-year-old business magnate said he was fortunate to have suffered only a cracked cheek and torn ligaments. Dramatic photos from the accident shows him all bloodied and bruised while receiving emergency treatment at the scene.

In a post on the Virgin website, entitled 'My life flashed before my eyes', he said he was cycling down a hill when he hit a speed bump and was hurled over the handlebars.

"A couple of nights ago I went cycling on Virgin Gorda with Holly and Sam as part of my training for the Virgin Strive Challenge. I was heading down a hill towards Leverick Bay when it suddenly got really dark and I managed to hit a 'sleeping policeman' hump in the road head on. The next thing I knew, I was being hurled over the handlebars and my life was literally flashing before my eyes

"I really thought I was going to die. I went flying head-first towards the concrete road, but fortunately my shoulder and cheek took the brunt of the impact, and I was wearing a helmet that saved my life (however, perhaps they should build bike helmets that protect the side of the face too - does anyone know of one?). My bike went flying off the cliff and disappeared. We've since recovered the crumpled bicycle, completely destroyed. My cheek has been badly damaged and my knee, chin, shoulder and body severely cut

"As I landed, once I realised I was alive, I began testing my movement. I really couldn't believe I was alive, let alone not paralysed. Coincidentally, the first person to arrive on the scene was my assistant Helen, who had just returned from holiday. She was wondering who was lying prostrate on the road. I was so glad to be alive that I quickly was able to summon my sense of humour, and said to her: "I'm alive! At least you've still got a job!

"George, one of the team, sprinted from the bottom of the hill and the team soon got me back home and patched up. I travelled to Miami for x-rays and scans, but have been extremely fortunate that apart from a cracked cheek and some torn ligaments I hopefully will be able to complete the Virgin Strive Challenge next month. My biggest hardship is having to drink tea out of a straw. Oh, and being called elephant man by a six year old!

"My attitude has always been, if you fall flat on your face, at least you're moving forward. All you have to do is get back up and try again. At least I'm practicing what I preach – though a little too literally!

the date of the accident just happened to be the fifth anniversary of the fire on Necker Island. What a way to mark it! Thankfully, good fortune has smiled on me so far. It has been quite a year, I've been in the wars knocking my teeth out playing tennis not once but twice, and also being kissed by a ray and running into a bullet proof door.

"Over the years I've had many brushes with death, not least in my ballooning adventures. In the documentary Don't Look Down, which we're releasing soon, my co-pilot Per Lindstrand quotes Napoleon: "I know he's a good general, but is he lucky?" He says I have certainly been lucky – I wouldn't disagree!

"Today my son Sam mentioned another fitting quote, from Hunter S. Thompson: "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"
