Bishop Daniel Obinim arrested over GH¢11.6 million fraud case and led away in handcuffs (photos)

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 02:11 PM PDT

Controversial founder of the International God's Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim was escorted in handcuffs and transferred to the Accra Police Headquarters after he reported himself to Tema Regional police station earlier today.

The 'Angel of God' had responded to invitation following complaints made to the police after he publicly flogged two teenage members of his church for alleged fornication and attempted abortion.

The police had given him 24 hour ultimatum to honour their invitation or they will be forced to take action against him.

A video of the man of God flogging the two with a belt went viral on social media recently, drawing widespread criticism but the Bishop defended the action insisting they deserved it for engaging in fornication and attempting an abortion.

However, there is a twist...according to Ghana media, the controversial Preacher is also being interrogated over a GH¢11.6 million fraud case. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) PRO, ASP Joseph Darkwa, said a complainant came to the Tema Police some few weeks ago to report that he gave an amount of GH¢780,000 to Okomfo Gyapata of Mampong Nkwanta near Koforidua in the Eastern Region to do a spiritual ritual to bless the money.

"According to the complainant, after some time, he realised that the Okomfo was not able to help him neither was he able to give him back his money, so he came to Bishop Obinim to report the matter so the Bishop would help him retrieve the money and do the rituals to bless the money for him," he said.

ASP Darkwa said it was based on that that Bishop Obinim asked him to bring the rest of the gold money which amounted to GH¢11.6 million belonging to the family.
The complaint told the police since he gave the money to the Bishop, he has not been able to do what he was expected to do neither was he given his money.

The complainant said he gave the money to Okomfo Gyapata on November 28, 2015, but the money he gave to Bishop Obinim was in June this year.

The CID PRO told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh on Newsnite that the complainant has not lodged a complaint against Okomfo Gyapata as yet but if it becomes necessary that they have to involve him they would do so.

"We have just commerce investigation into this issue, when we finish we will hand him over to Domestic Violence Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) to investigate the domestic violence issue," ASP Darkwa said.

The congression waiting for him to lead service at the Tema Community 9 branch were disappointed as the junior pastors throng the police station and they registered their disappointment upon seeing him handcuffed into a police car to be transferred to Accra, Joy News reports.

Photos: Woman flees after brutalizing her young stepchildren in Kaduna

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 01:23 PM PDT

A 2-year-old boy and four year-old girl were allegedly brutalized by their stepmother in NDC, Igabi local government area of Kaduna State. The children, Abdulrahman Abubakar and Maryam Abubakar are currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kaduna.

According to Daily Trust, the stepmother identified as Hasiya broke Abdulrahman's left hand, right leg and Maryam's head at their father's house.

The men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) are searching for the woman who fled the house after security agencies came looking for her at their residence on Monday evening, August 22.

Mother of the children, Halima, who spoke to Daily Trust at the hospital on Tuesday, said she and her husband started having problem 12 days after her son was born which brought to an end, their three year old marriage.

"Initially, the children were living with me after we separated, but immediately I weaned my son, the father came and took the children away first to his parents' house and then to his wife. On Monday, I was on my way to the market when I got a call from the father of my children that my son was on admission at the hospital. "I quickly rushed there and when I saw the condition my son was in, I was devastated. He could hardly breathe and he had bruises on his eye, his head, his stomach and his private part. The doctor told me that the fracture on my son's hand and leg were two weeks old, and I learnt he was not able to walk and was taken to a traditional bonesetter who obviously had not been able to fix the fracture.

"My son is being treated for a broken hand, a broken leg and bruises on his eye, stomach, back and private part while my daughter is being treated for a broken head after their step mother used the sole of a pointed shoe to hit her head. They were also starved in the house because if you see the way they gulped down the tea my sister made for them. The people in the hospital can bear me witness."

SCDC took the children's father for interrogation and gave him 48 hours to bring the wife or face the wrath of the law.

"Pls don't expose me. My husband-to-be isn't responsible for the pregnancy" Bride-to-be pleads as police raid abortion clinic

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 01:01 PM PDT

Police in Uganda on Thursday, August 18th, raided a notorious abortion clinic and arrested the doctor, Moses Kaweesa. The police officers (disguised in plain clothes) raided Miriam Medical Centre in Bwaise and rescued secondary school girls who were being prepared to undergo abortion.

Drama ensued when one woman identified as Joan began to cry and plead for leniency because she was about to get married.

"Please do not arrest or expose me. I am going to get married soon but the husband-to-be is not the one responsible for the pregnancy," Joan pleaded. "The wedding is due next Saturday" she sobbed.

One of the girls was bleeding and was immediately rushed to Mulago Hospital. Another 15-year-old, found in school uniform, is currently in police custody at Kawempe Police Station.

The doctor, who carries out the abortions, Moses Kaweesa, said, "If you arrest me, my life will be done. I get a living by helping girls abort."

A total of seven people were arrested on the afternoon. Attempts by Moses Kaweesa to offer a bribe to the arresting police officers were futile.

The police worked along with officials from KCCA, Remnant Uganda (an NGO) and Reproductive Health Uganda to carry out the operation. Abortion in Uganda is illegal and carries a sentence of up to 14 years. Prior to the raid, Kampala Sun had published a story about choking the country's capital.(pictured above is the front page)

A two-year old baby stolen by a house help in Nairobi's Imara Daima estate was on Monday, August 22, rescued at the Busia border.

Baby Kaity Amanda was rescued five days after she was allegedly stolen by house help, Jessica Nawire - a Ugandan national, on August 17.
The rescue was as a result of concerted efforts between the Kenya and Ugandan police and the Protective and Safety Association of Kenya (PROSAK)

It is reported that the house-girl had already crossed the border into Uganda but rapid efforts by the rescue teams ensured her capture. Nawire is now being held at a police post in Busia.

PROSAK chairman, Enock Makanga, appreciated the role of inter-agency support saying that only in working together can such cases be arrested early. He has also warned parents to be extra careful on the persons they leave their children with.

"Do not engage any house help without a simple background check. Have full details of your house help or house employees and get at least three references before you hire," Makanga said.

Muslim religious leader, 71, 'brutally murdered with hammer' by two ISIS supporters

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 12:06 PM PDT

Jalal Uddin, a 71 year old Muslim leader in Rochdale park was brutally murdered by two ISIS fanatics, Mohammed Hussain Syeedy, 22, and Mohammed Abdul Kadir, 24 after they believed he was into a form of faith healing they saw as 'blackmagic', Manchester crown court heard today.
Mr Uddin died after losing consciousness as he was found with severe fractures to his skull administered with a hammer as he walked past a children's play area near Rochdale town centre.
He died without ever being able to say who killed him or why or why he was targeted.
Syeedy in court today denied the murder charges while the other crime suspect Kadir has reportedly fled.
Addressing the 12 jurors, prosecutor Mr Paul Greaney QC said: 'Who hated a decent man like Jalal Uddin with such virulence?'
He continued:
'The answer to that important question is to be found in the twisted ideology of ISIS, sometimes known as Islamic State. We will describe it was ISIS but the terms ISIS and IS mean the same.'
He told the court that Mr Uddin was a practitioner of a form of Islamic healing called Ruqya which involved the use of Taweez.
Mr Greaney added: 'ISIS regards this practice as black magic and adheres to the view that those who engage in it deserve severe punishment even death.'
Syeedy and Kadir, both alleged ISIS supporters discovered that Mr Uddin was a practitioner in the summer of 2015 and began to stalk him, the prosecutor said. The prosecutor also said that the pair had, 'developed a hatred of him'.
Mr Uddin was found seriously injured by two young girls shortly before 9pm on February 18, 2016, as they entered the park and discovered him on the ground.

'From helper to suspect in a homicide case. 96 hours in hell' - Student shares experience following Rivers state CJ's son's drowning

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 12:42 PM PDT

The Rivers state Chief Judge's son Wariebi Abiri, a Law student, unfortunately drowned in a swimming pool at a hotel in Abuja on Friday August 19th as students gathered to celebrate the end of lectures for the year. Apparently some students who were around when the incident happened were locked up for days, one of them however blogged about it. He shared his story which he titled 'From helper to suspect in a homicide case. 96 hours in hell' which he shared on medium.com/@Ruud_bishop

Read his article after the cut...

Friday 19th of August 2016 changed my life totally. I had an experience that I never imagined possible.
Students of the Nigerian Law School in Bar Part I, have just finished lectures for the year and different people felt the need to gather and celebrate this.
The events that followed are better imagined than being the reality of anyone. I arrived the venue, a hotel across the Law School, at about 8pm and met a few students having drinks and food around the premises. I went into a friend's room to rest and charge my phone.
A while later, I came down to speak to a few people and exchange pleasantries. People were dancing and discussing in small groups. The whole thing started winding down at about 11:30pm, as most people had to return to the law school premises before the 12am curfew.
Most people who remained in the premises were chatting close to the gate and watching some people play games of table tennis close to the gate. At about 2am or so, there was a loud scream that someone was in the pool. Everyone turned and was wondering why anyone was in the pool at that time. The scream came again and indicated the person was drowning. There was commotion and everyone ran towards the pool. Two students went into the pool and brought out the person. A few people tried to administer CPR including mouth to mouth. I was shouting to get him to a hospital. A friend brought out her car to take him to the hospital, but the hotel management said to take him in their vehicle. In the midst of all the confusion that followed, some of us realised we didn't know who was in the bus with the victim and we should drive behind them to the hospital.
We got to the hospital, General Hospital, Bwari, where we met the doctors administering CPR, removing water from his system and trying to resuscitate him. We gathered outside to pray. At some point, the doctor asked for the closest person to him and his roommate stepped forward, the doctor then pronounced him dead and said he was (BID) brought in dead. Some of the students present, requested to transfer him to a private hospital. At this point, the doctor called some of us aside and explained the standard medical steps and procedures that had been taken to resuscitate the victim and why he concluded he was dead. He advised that the police be informed and his body transferred to a morgue. It was at this point I pulled his roommate aside and asked for the name of the victim. He said his name is Wariebi. I mentioned I had never met the victim or interacted with him, but it was sad that this had happened. I tried to console him, but I broke down myself. We agreed to inform the Nigerian Law School in the morning and they would inform his parents.
We made payment for the card and other things in the hospital. I was consoling the female students present and had to get them back to their accommodation. I asked some of the students to inform the police and the doctor to arrange for him to be deposited in a morgue. I followed the ladies back to the hotel, where they stay. We had to inform other students present.
Hours went by and we were told that the Police needed us to come and write down what happened as witnesses. We all willingly got dressed, got in a bus provided by the hotel and went to Bwari Police Station for what was to be a routine statement by witnesses of such a tragic event. Myself and two other colleagues made statements of what we witnessed and also met his roommate and other people who had assisted to get him to the hospital making statements as well. We all made statements and thought to leave, only for the Investigating Police Officer to inform us that we were all being detained as suspects in a case of 'Suspected Culpable Homicide'. Everyone was shocked and thought he must be joking. We are all law students, with knowledge of the law and we had only helped a colleague in distress. To then hear the words Suspect, Culpable and Homicide sounded very outrageous to us all. We were all worried and tried to contact authorities of the Nigerian Law School.
We were 'processed' and transferred to a cell. Word had gotten out and the authorities of the Law School came and paid us a visit. After listening to our side of events, they apologised that we were being held for helping a colleague and promised they will help to get us all out. They repeated the visit later in the day and said investigators were working to get to the bottom of this and to get us out. The Director General of the Law School, Dr. Onadeko (SAN) visited us later in the evening and said he would be in touch and would ensure we weren't treated as other 'suspects'. At this point I objected to him referring to us as suspects and also asked him if that was the official position of the Nigerian Law School? Were we being seen as suspects rather than a group of law students who helped a colleague in distress? It was in the middle of our interaction with the DG that I heard the victim's full name for the first time. The DG said his name is Wariebi Abiri and that his mother is the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State and a friend of his.
We were returned to the cell and we later discovered that the police had granted bail to the General Manager of the hotel and a member of his staff. We demanded to know why we were being kept and the hotel management was being let off the hook. Same hotel that had no safety measures to prevent such an incident? Same hotel that had no lifeguard around an open pool? No answers were provided.
This dragged for 48 hours before we were eventually granted bail on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command. We were asked to report to the station daily until investigation was completed.
We reported to the station on Monday and were transferred to the State CID. A case of helping a colleague was really snowballing into a real homicide case and we found ourselves as the suspects.
I must state that the professionalism of the officers of the Homicide dept at the FCT CID saved the day. They berated the investigating officer from the local station for even bringing us there. We made fresh statements and have now become witnesses in a case of negligence. Truth be said, a few high level calls were made to ruin/save the day. The IGP and CP FCT remained very professional and helpful.
One has been granted some respite, albeit temporarily and can't even thank God enough. Can't thank all the friends and family members who came through and who made sure one didn't suffer for being a Good Samaritan. Your prayers and all saw us through this harrowing ordeal.
It is important to understand how facts are not sacrosanct around here. I saw some of the most horrible twists and turns in my life in just 48 hours. I saw lives being toyed with, for political gains. We thank God that a few things were done right by a few professional officers and innocent people were saved such a nasty experience. I saw a different side of the Nigerian Police Force. Competent and incompetent ones, but I genuinely believe the competent ones are at the top. I live in a country that can be stranger than fiction sometimes. I now understand why people are genuinely afraid to help others in need. No one wants to become a suspect for rendering help.
Really grateful to be here telling this as a story and an experience. It could have gone a totally different way. Let me now get to processing the fact that I lost a colleague and was one of those that saw him dead. No one remembered that in all of this madness.
P.S: Ignore all the grammatical errors. My head is still all over the place, but I thought to share this. Thanks for reading my epistle.

EFCC reopens probe on 2011 subsidy scam

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 08:41 AM PDT

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reopened investigations into alleged N10.9 billion subsidy scams that rocked the petroleum sector in 2011. The antigraft agency has investigated some key officials of the IPMAN Investment Company Limited, a company incorporated by some independent marketers to participate in the importation of refined products into the country in 2011.

Vice Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria IPMAN, Chinedu Okoronkwo, who confirmed the recent development to DailyTrust, said the association has received letters from the Police Special Fraud Unit, Department of Criminal Investigations, inviting some of its members for investigation.
"We at the IPMAN secretariat are happy that the authorities are re-opening this case, because as a vice chairman of this company, we are kept in the dark. We don't know when and how the IPMAN Investment Company Ltd imported any product, but all we saw was the release of N10.9 billion as subsidy reimbursement, that is why we started asking questions. Let's keep IPMAN politics aside, this is national issue, let them provide the information and details of how much product was imported, who lifted it, which bank account the marketers paid the money to lift such product, and which bank opened the LC for them to import such product for which they deserved N10.9 billion reimbursement. These are the questions we asked Aminu and co but they rather tried to shift attention to another issue," Okoronkwo said
He also confirmed that the antigraft agency on August 9th and 11th invited other members of IPMAN Investment and Company like Mike Osatuyi, Baba Kano Jada, Habu Jajere and Mustapha Y. Bawa for questioning.

Ebonyi state governor threatens to declare 15yr old girl, Uzoamaka, wanted if she is not returned by new guardian in 7 days

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 08:40 AM PDT

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has ordered the return of the 15-year-old girl, Uzoamaka Chukwu, who was stripped and tortured early this month by some people in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.

Umahi, who gave the order on Sunday when he visited the family of the teenager at Umunaga Uburu, said her return would enable state government take full responsibility of her rehabilitation & training.

Although Uzoamaka was last week reportedly taken custody of by an Ebonyi State-born Port-Harcourt-based businesswoman, Ms Rita Nnenna Anoh, Umahi said she must return within seven days or be declared wanted because she remained a property of state.

Umahi, in a statement on Sunday night by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, said, "Government is asking that wherever she is, she should come back so that we can take over her training from secondary school to university level. We will also be able to rehabilitate her.
" We are giving seven days for her to come back. We don't know where she is but we ask that she must return because she is the property of the state."
The governor, who also promised to improve the welfare of the girls family, reiterated his administration's willingness to see that justice was done. He added,
"The matter is before a competent court; ,so we may not say much but on what we saw,we felt very bad as a people,as government and as brothers and sisters of Uzoamaka. "We feel that is a gross violation of her right and man's inhumanity to man. "So we are very sad about it and that is why I directed that all of us should come to take over the responsibility of the girl."
Umahi said what government was doing was in no way going to stop the case in court, stressing that the case in court will continue to run its course.
"The government's intervention would not disrupt justice in the case, as we would ensure that such incident does not repeat itself while thanking the family for its belief in the government's ability to handle the issue. The case in court will continue to run its course and justice must also be done in that direction," he emphasised.
Responding, Elder Francis Odabe, who responded on behalf of the family, appreciated Governor Umahi as a passionate leader. He said,
"We know you are a charitable son of the soil and we know that even if you had not been a governor, you would have still come to sympathise with us. You would have still shown concern because we know you for that. "
Odabe promised on behalf of the family to do everything possible to ensure that Uzoamaka was brought back home within the seven days given by the governor. The governor made the visit in company with some members of the state Executive Council and political stakeholders from old Ohaozara LGA.
