Operation Awatse: Air Force advices the residents around Arepo not to panic

Posted: 03 Aug 2016 12:47 PM PDT

The Nigerian Military on the 28th of July, commenced the aerial bombardment of Fatola, the hideout of militants and pipeline vandals in the Arepo area of Ogun State and successfuly displaced suspected militants and vandals.

In a statement released today, NAF has urged members of the public living around the area of ongoing air operations at AREPO and its environs, not to panic and to go about their legitimate businesses. The statement read,

The attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been drawn to media report on apprehension and panic by members of the public living around the area of ongoing air operations at AREPO and its environs. Thus, it has become necessary to allay the fear of the people with a view to sustaining public confidence and support for the ongoing operations against pipeline-vandals codenamed OPERATION AWATSE in the South West region of the Country. Therefore, the NAF wishes to assure the general public, within the affected areas, of their safety as the ongoing air operation is carefully planned to avoid collateral damage to the civil populace and property.

The NAF is careful to ensure that only legitimate targets, such as observation post, anti-aircraft gun position, boats laden with suspected stolen petroleum products and armed combatants, are selected for strike. In aligning with this global best practice, the NAF usually undertakes surveillance flights before and after each strike to mitigate incidental harm to civilians and property. While pre-strike assessment missions are undertaken to help identify and select legitimate military targets for neutralisation, post-strike or Battle Damage Assessment missions are meant to ascertain whether the desired degree of impact was achieved or not, and if a follow-up re-attack is required.

It may also be necessary to state that NAF pilots are adequately trained, and as professionals, would not engage in human right violations and abuses. The successes recorded in the past 5 days since the NAF commenced strike mission in AREPO, in support of surface forces under OPERATION AWATSE, attest to this display of absolute professionalism by NAF pilots involved in the operation as no single incident of collateral damage has been recorded.

Meanwhile, it is necessary to add that the NAF, working in collaboration with men of the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Services (SBS), has set on fire the hideouts and camps used by the pipeline vandals in AREPO. As a result, Community leaders and members of the public with useful information on the whereabouts of the fleeing vandals and other criminal elements are please requested to oblige such information to the Security Agencies. Furthermore, the civil populace is please advised not to panic but to go about their legitimate businesses.

Girl battling anorexia who lived off 39 calories a day and weighed just three-and-a-half stone says love saved her life

Posted: 03 Aug 2016 12:15 PM PDT

19 year old Chiara Schober, from Liechtenstein, battled anorexia for years. She ate just a peach per day. After her grandmother died, it got worse for her as she suffered stomach cramps which left her feeling permanently full. Chiara starved herself daily, her weight dropped to just three and a half stone, and doctors feared for her life.

Despite her extremely thin appearance, Chiara met her boyfriend, Jason, 17, last year and she says he completely changed her life.

Desperate to help improve her health, Jason began to regularly take Chiara out for meals and encouraged her to eat more. Chiara now weighs a healthy eight stone and believes if it wasn't for the love of her life Jason who helped with her dramatic transformation in the past 12 months, she might not be alive today.

Chiara, a languages student said:
"When Jason met me a year ago I was a completely different person. At one point I weighed just three-and-a-half stone - when I look back now I can't believe it, I was just skin and bone. I was eating just a peach a day, I couldn't bear the thought of eating it was like I was punishing myself. In my early teens I started suffering from bad stomach cramps and I felt permanently full. I began to feel guilty when I ate as I never actually felt hungry so I started eating less and less as I didn't want to eat for the sake of it. Then when my grandmother passed away I was heartbroken, she had helped me get a bit better but when I lost her my weight spiralled again.
"I feel so lucky that Jason has helped change all that, he's seen me at my worst so I know he loves me for me. When doctors told me my body wouldn't be able to cope much longer without food I knew it was now or never.
"That's when Jason stepped in and encouraged me to eat more, he would take me out for meals and buys snacks like popcorn for us snack on. Soon I found enjoyment in eating again, he helped me recover mentally too. I'd always dreamt of getting married someday and having a family of my own, Jason made me realise what life was really about again.
"I used to be terrified of all foods other than fruit and veg, but now I eat ice cream, pizza, and just about anything that's put in front of me. I wanted to be healthy again for both of us, I wanted us to be able to go out and do what normal couples do and not let an eating disorder control me."

She added:
"I used to hate going to hospital, I struggled so much and at times it made the condition worse. I would be placed on an eating diet which resulted in several meals a day, including porridge with almonds and quinoa with broccoli. But doctors couldn't force me to eat anything so sometimes I even lost weight during my stays. I even threatened that I'd kill myself if I stayed in hospital .
"My mum took me home against doctor's wishes one time because she thought that I would cope better. But after my grandmother passed away my health rapidly deteriorated and I spent nine months in hospital again.Recovery wasn't easy but I would recommend anyone in a similar position to see a doctor or therapist as soon as they notice an eating disorder."

Last summer Chiara was released from hospital after her she managed to get her weight just above six stone. Chiara said:
"After leaving hospital last year I haven't looked back since. I'm now in control of my emotions and have become a lot fitter and healthier, I never want to go back to losing weight like I used to. I'm now in a really good place and I'm surrounded by supportive family and friends and the best boyfriend I could wish for. I now have a future to look forward to again and I can't wait to live my life to the full now."

Photo: 31-year old man nabbed with hard drug worth N1.78b in Anambra State

Posted: 03 Aug 2016 08:19 AM PDT

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra State arrested a 31-year-old man on July 28, for allegedly peddling hard drug worth N1.78 billion.

The Commander, Mr. Sule Momodu, said the suspect identified as Vincent Chidiebere was arrested in Awka, the state capital, with methamphetamine weighing 25.2kg. A kilogramme of the drug cost about $150,000.

He said the arrest was made following a tip-off that a shipment of the drug would pass through Anambra from Enugu to Lagos. Speaking to reporters, he said:
"Based on the information, we set up a team to search vehicles from a particular company. About 11am we intercepted a vehicle carrying the substance and nabbed the suspect."
Momodu, described the drug as "one of the most potent illicit drugs in the world, which has a lot of destructive tendencies on the user, adding that anyone under the influence of the dangerous drug can be influenced to make disastrous decisions. He said the chemicals used for the production were highly toxic and could cause permanent destruction to the eco-system.
"The waste from the drug is more toxic than the extracted substance. The people around where it is being produced are likely to be exposed to cancer and other incurable diseases, while children born in the area are likely to be deformed."
The Commander said that apart from the three methamphetamine laboratories discovered at Nanka, Ozubulu and Obosi, he believed more exist. Momodu urged the public to volunteer information that could help to stop the illicit venture, adding that the State Governor, Willie Obiano pledged a reward of N500,000 to anyone with useful information.
"Most of the methamphetamine being produced are meant for Asian countries," Momodu said.
The suspect will be arraigned before court on completion of investigation.

A Kenyan woman has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her husband to death for arriving home late and drunk.
Ann Mbaithe (pictured left) was accused of stabbing her husband, Daniel Githuka, 30, in the chest and killing him, after he returned home in the early hours of Saturday, July 30 in Tinganga village, Kiambu town.

The deceased's mother Elizabeth Wanjiku said he worked at a neighbouring school and usually returned at about 10pm. She said the couple had been married for five years and had no problems. The had one child aged four and a half.
"My son and I live in the same compound. I heard confrontation from my house past midnight," Wanjiku recounted.
The mother said she got out of bed and went to Githuka's house where she found him arguing with his wife. Her son stood his ground saying he was the head of the house who should not have been confronted over the matter. She had not noticed the knife Mbaithe had been holding since she folded her arms.
"It was not a physical confrontation but my son's wife suddenly attacked and stabbed him in the chest with a knife. After my son was stabbed I called for help from neighbours but upon reaching hospital he was pronounced dead due to loss of blood."
Wanjiku said she reported the matter at Kiambu police station. Officers arrived  later and arrested Mbaithe at the home. County DCI boss Amos Tebeny said Mbaithe will be charged with murder once investigations are completed.
