3 arrested for impersonating EFCC acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu

Posted: 09 Aug 2016 01:52 PM PDT

The Enugu Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three persons: Chukwuma Charles Eze, Ogechi Emeka Okwuosa and Anokwuru Miriam Iheoma,(F) in a case of impersonation and attempt to obtain money by false pretences from the Anambra State Secretary to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Prince Casmir I. Ajulu.
The arrest of the trio came on the heels of a petition that a text message was purportedly sent on 26th March, 2016 by the Acting Executive Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu to Ajulu's phone requesting him to send a list of names of House of Representatives designates that want their Certificate of Return for the last election held in Anambra State.

Several subsequent messages from two mobile numbers belonging to Glo and MTN network respectively demanded from the petitioner the sum of N16,0000,000.00 (Sixteen Million Naira Only) assuring him that the EFCC Chairman was in touch and working with the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The suspects on sensing the reluctance of the complainant in cooperating with them started sending some text messages and calls threatening to deal with him if he failed to pay the said amount. But in a statement made by Iheoma who claimed to be Eze's girlfriend, Eze collected her account details and that she was not privy to whatever business it was meant to be used for.

On his own part, Eze said he collected the account detail because his friend Ogechi Emeka Okwuosa had asked him to find a UBA account with which he (Okwuosa) needed to use to receive money from someone. Further investigation is being carried out to determine the spread of the alleged syndicate's activities and their possible victims.

Arrest of Mr Abubakar Usman Sidiq: A threat to Free Speech, says LEPAN

Posted: 09 Aug 2016 01:22 PM PDT

Read the statement below...
Yesterday's arrest of a blogger, Mr. Abubakar Usman Sidiq by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has drawn reactions from several young Nigerians from all works of live. A large majority of this demographic group whom our organization, the League of Progressives Ambassadors of Nigeria (LEPAN) represent have described the arrest of Mr. Sidiq as a threat to free speech among others.
Young Nigerians are also concerned about the style of arrest, abuse of powers and the response of government to the issue, which has been disavowed by the general public. In a democracy, the rule of law and impartial justice is the defense of a legal citizen.

The adherence to the separation of powers and due respect of constitutional human rights should be the pursuit of a legitimate government. The arrest of Abubakar Usman Sidiq in the early hours of Monday 8th August 2016 has further alienated the people from the government, which ought to be more focused on fostering trust.

The EFCC stated in a press release via its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren that it has arrested the popular blogger accusing him of 'cyberstalking in violation of the cyber crimes act of Nigeria' and citing an article published by the blogger about the commission's Chairman. An individual in authority must not use state powers abusively in addressing a discontent.

LEPAN believes the law must take its due course in the matter. However, the government has acted in a reckless and unlawful manner on several counts:

1. Violation of the rule of law as section 45 sub-section 1 of the Cyber crimes act clearly states the process to arrest and detaining alleged offenders.

2. Violation of the freedom of expression by impeding on Mr. Abubakar's right to express his opinions according to Section 39 sub-section 1 of the Nigerian constitution.

3. Violation of Jurisdiction as Section 6 and 7 of the Economic and financial Crimes commission establishment act of 2004 clearly outlines the powers of the commission.

This is a threat to the fundamental rights of every Nigerian to free speech and it must be duly addressed.

Judge orders Tyga's arrest

Posted: 09 Aug 2016 01:15 PM PDT

According to TMZ, a judge has ordered the arrest of rapper Tyga after failing to show up in court today in his case with his former landlord. TMZ reports below...
Tyga better not run into cops today, because if he does they'll arrest him. Kylie's BF was a no-show in court Tuesday, where he was supposed to appear so lawyers for his former landlord could grill him about his finances.
The landlord got a $480,000 judgment against the rapper who fell way behind on rent and left the Malibu home in shambles. Tyga hasn't paid the judgment, so the landlord wants to know where Tyga's hiding his assets. Attorneys for the landlord were in court today, explaining the landlord was upset over stories he saw that Tyga bought Kylie a $200,000 car for her birthday, which he claims is a fraudulent transfer of assets that should go to satisfy the judgment.
The judge issued a bench warrant, which means Tyga could go to jail. The rapper's finances have been curious for a long time. He's had cars repoed, he's been evicted, but he still lives like a king. He recently rented a mansion for $46k a month. #Priorities

I support death penalty for coup plotters: Turkey's president Erdogan tells supporters at the million-strong unity rally

Posted: 09 Aug 2016 08:43 AM PDT

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he will support the reintroduction of the death penalty after last month's failed coup, as long as the Turkish public and parliament approve the measure.

The streets of Istanbul were overflowing with supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday night with more than a million people attending a rally in the wake of last month's failed military coup. Turkish government sources said five million people arrived to support the president, and the event was broadcast to thousands more at smaller rallies across the country.

"If the nation makes such a decision [in support of death penalty], I believe political parties will abide by this decision," he said in a rally at the Yenikapi square in the city's Sultanahmet district in Istanbul on Sunday
"It is the Turkish parliament that will decide on this [death penalty] given the sovereignty rests with the nation…I declare it in advance, I will approve the decision made by the parliament," Erdogan said.
He compared the use of the death penalty in the U.S., Japan and China as examples of major powers who utilize such a measure, in defiance of critics within the EU who have cautioned against such moves following the coup attempt.
"They say there is no death penalty in the EU... Well, the US has it, Japan has it, China has it, most of the world has it. So they are allowed to have it. We used to have it until 1984. Sovereignty belongs to the people, so if the people make this decision I am sure the political parties will comply."

Amid red and white flags, Erdogan pledged to use any measures within the power of the ruling government to prevent another attempt at seizing power in the NATO member state.
"As a state and as a nation we need to analyze the July 15 coup attempt very well. We need to evaluate well not just those who engaged in this treachery, but the powers behind them, the motives that made them take action," Erdogan told the crowd, whose number the Turkish media estimated to be millions.
The Turkish government accused the exiled U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen of inspiring the failed military coup last month, which saw clashes leave at least 273 people dead, but Gulen has denied his involvement in the coup.
