| Photos: EFCC arrests three FAAN staff over N100m fraud Posted: 05 Aug 2016 01:36 PM PDT  The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, August 2, arrested a level six officer of the Accounts Department of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Christy Olabode, for an alleged fraud to the tune of N100 million. Also arrested was her younger brother, Abdul-Shehu Obaze, a staff at the Commercial Department of FAAN in Ilorin, Kwara State, and Dominic Ojo, an IT officer at FAAN Headquarters, Lagos. Her arrest followed an anonymous petition, which indicated that she allegedly diverted the said sum, by inserting names of non-FAAN staff into its payroll. She allegedly conspired with Obaze, to perpetrate the fraud. Obaze was found to have maintained not less than eight accounts in seven new generation banks, which were used to receive the funds for onward distribution to "several high ranking officers within the FAAN". The funds were being paid into his various bank accounts with the narrative, "Furniture Allowance". However, while allowance for FAAN's furniture is usually paid once in three years, Obaze received the "allowance" several times within a year. Investigations carried out by the EFCC revealed that the fraud had gone on since 2013. It unearthed a payroll with names of many dead, retired and disengaged staff of FAAN listed against Obaze's different bank accounts. |
| Photos: Hundreds of stray dogs poisoned in Pakistan Posted: 05 Aug 2016 01:26 PM PDT  Officials have poisoned hundreds of dogs in Karachi, Pakistan in the latest effort to curb a population of strays that attack thousands of people each day. Bodies of dead dogs are seen littered around the city as municipal workers gathered them for disposal. Officials estimated the operation had culled thousands of strays but did not have a full accounting for all six city districts. "At least 700 dogs have been killed only in two areas of Karachi's south in the couple of days," said Sattar Javed, a spokesman for the municipal authority. The periodic culling of stray dogs using poison tablets hidden in chicken has drawn criticism from animal rights activists but a city official, Mohammad Zahid, said it was necessary because packs of strays posed a threat to residents. | Posted: 05 Aug 2016 12:25 PM PDT  Two Kenyan women are currently receiving treatment at the Nyahururu County Referral hospital after they were attacked by their husbands in separate incidents. 32-year-old Zipporah Wanjugu (left) is nursing serious injuries on both hands and head, which she sustained after her husband attacked her with a panga (large knife) on Wednesday night, August 3rd at their home in Wiyumiririe village in Laikipia County. Vivian Moraa, 23 (right) a labourer at Suera Flowers Company, claims her husband picked a panga and told her that he would chop off her hands 'just like the other lady who was on TV'. The resident of Suera area on the outskirts of Nyahururu town sustained serious head injuries after being battered by her husband because she refused to share her wages with him. "After receiving my wages, I went home with household goods I bought from Nyahururu town and that angered my husband. He said that it was wrong for me to buy household goods and yet he had no money," she said. "I separated from him two months ago only for him to storm into my rented house and take away the baby without uttering a word. I finished my work and went to pick the baby so that I could breastfeed him only for him to start insulting me before picking a panga which he used to attack me," she said. The mother of four woke up to find herself in a hospital bed and later fell unconscious. A police officer at Ndaragwa police station who arrested the man said the attacker had poison in his pocket during the time of the arrest. "After the incident was reported to us, we rushed to the scene and arrested the man. He had tried to commit suicide because he had poison in his pocket," said a police officer. The victim claimed that the man had turned her into the sole breadwinner for their four children, adding that he had threatened her on several occasions saying he wanted both of them dead. A doctor at the facility said that the two women are out of danger, but Ms Wanjugu's left hand had been severely damaged. Watch video below.. |

The sweetness of the victory comes from the fact that it came against all odds. Our team overcame several challenges to put up a sterling performance. This is a good beginning." President Buhari also praised the resilience, hardwork and patriotism that the athletes have put into their preparations; "I am already aware that you have made personal sacrifices in your journey to the Olympic Games. He allegedly attacked the other one by groping her breast, making sexual graphic gestures and further offered her money for sex. "It has been necessary to arrest Hassan Saada to investigate the allegations against him. If he was at liberty there would be a risk that he could interfere with witnesses. And there is a risk that Hassan Saada could reoffend.'" said Judge Nunes Saly, stressing that Brazilian laws apply to both Brazilians and visitorsSaada had been scheduled to fight in his first bout on Saturday August 6th against Turkish competitor Mehmet Nadaradade Una. | ‘It makes no economic sense to discriminate in any way’ – Ayo Sogunro Posted: 05 Aug 2016 09:54 AM PDT  Guests on this episode were Ijeoma Akwiwu, a legal practitioner, and Ayo Sogunro, a legal practitioner and human rights activists. Together, the trio discussed how the same sex marriage prohibition law (SSMP), an eight section law which is not part of the Nigerian Constitution, got accelerated hearing and was passed into law without following due process. When asked about her perception of the SSMP law, Ijeoma said, "I think it was just a bunch of mischievous individuals who sat down to put together the law." While citing her displeasure on how lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender are being treated, she said that "one act can change a lot of things". "As Nigerians, we shouldn't just wait till the cases are many before we do something about it, it starts from the everyday act," she added. In his words Ayo said, "For me, any form of social injustice is just wrong, the society should be a place where everyone is equal before the law irrespective of your positioning, your status, your family or your background." He urged every Nigerian to understand that their rights as citizens and how important it is to pay more attention to this. He further added, "Democracy should be balanced by rights, it shouldn't be a tyranny of reality, the majority and minority should have their say, there should be a balance." Narrating the terrible experience, she wrote, "I saw my life flash in front of me for 5 minutes and I thought, so this is how it feels to be helpless and confused. One minute , I was standing on solid ground, the next minute I was on air, as the concrete caved way beneath my feet. For 5 minutes, I shouted and screamed for help,no one heard my cry and the ground was still sinking , I had to claw my way out before the whole structure could collapse. I had been standing on an abandoned Soakaway pit. Thank God there were no rains , Bless God he is still faithful, when it seems no one heard. Only he could have done this. He is still a miracle working God. Yahweh.More photos...   |

Seeing that there was no other way out, he quickly jumped into the canal by the side of the road and refused to come out. After a while he eventually dragged himself out and returned the transport fare to other passengers who agreed to enter another bus. More photos from the scene below...
