N145 pump price will crash in three months- APC chairman says

Posted: 14 May 2016 11:51 AM PDT

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress APC says the new N145 pump price of petrol will crash within thhe next three months. In a media briefing with newsmen in Abuja yesterday May 13th, the Chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun, says just like the Global System of Mobile telecommunication, GSM, the price of fuel is bound to reduce due to competitive market forces.

According to him:
"From our point of view as a party, it has become necessary to fully and in order to recover from the economic situation which we have been plunged to totally free the economy and let the normal laws of demand and supply operate. Of course, with government standing by to protect the long suffering Nigerian who is at the margin. If is unfortunate, it is painful what has happened, it will increase cost in all directions. But in the medium term, in three months at best, I foresee that the prices will come crashing down when there is availability. NNPC will continue to be in the field anyway either through the refineries whenever our pipelines are allowed to function or through importation and so will continue to be a player in the fuel supply market. Prices are bound to come down. A typical example is what happened when mobile phones were introduced. I remember that I bought a SIM card for over N30,000, but today, it is virtually free. If we free the fuel market, that same thing will happen which was as a result of competition is likely to happen. "Over time, the subsidy regime has become so intensely manipulated, so abused that it really was no longer operating in the interest of the Nigerian public.
I think that it has become very clear that the kind of queues that has become endemic over several regimes in this nation is a clear indication that something has gone seriously wrong with the subsidy regime. Those who were privileged were exploiting it to amass more wealth. Meanwhile, the people for whom it was basically meant had to bear the cost in higher transport fare. Each time these queues develop, of course the ordinary Nigerian bears the cost while the importers and manipulators of the system are the ones that makes all the money. If the region of subsidy is to be reintroduced, it can only divert resources from the crying needs of other sectors, including the programme to help the Nigerians living at the margin. So, the appeal which is a very sincere appeal to the Nigerian people; yes there is a lot of hardship, yes increased pump price will also increase that hardship.
But the economy is being freed in a way that the ordinary Nigerian will become the major beneficiary and we are talking of a matter of months from removing this one last bottleneck that has held the Nigerian economy down. So, it is an appeal and we should watch what happen in the next few months as far as the fuel issue is concerned because I am sure it will come crashing down. In any case, it will free resources eventually that will be used to create good jobs which has been promised and improve the lot of the Nigerians at the margin.
That is the message the party wants to convey. The economy is in bad shape as a result of which our people are going through hard times", he said

President Buhari to name looters on May 29th

Posted: 14 May 2016 06:39 AM PDT

In an interview in London yesterday before he returned to Abuja, President Buhari said that the names of corrupt Nigerians will be made public in a speech he intends to deliver on May 29 and that those named will be prosecuted. He also said he was coming after people bombing and destroying pipelines in the Niger Delta;

"So far, what has come out, what has been recovered in whatever currency from each ministries, departments and individuals, I intend on the 29th to speak on this because all Nigerians are getting from the mass media because of the number of people arrested either by the EFCC, DSS. But we want to make a comprehensive report on the 29th.
On whether the names of those indicted will be published, he said:
"Yes, eventually, it has to be done because we want to successfully prosecute them. But you know you cannot go to the courts unless you have documents for prosecution.
"People signed for these monies into their personal accounts, their banks gave statements that the money is there, when it came, how much and so on."
Also speaking on allegation of selective prosecution, Buhari said:
"That is an accusation against the law enforcement agencies. But I assure you that we do not interfere. Try and get those who are now under arrest, you will find out it is across the board."
On Militants...

"What I know is that I was elected by the whole country and the least I can do is to keep the country together somehow. I assure you we will develop the capacity to do it. If you can recall, the militants, I appointed a retired Brigadier General (Boroh). When I give people assignment, I develop terms of reference for them and I allow them to do their work. I understand the problem. I spoke with the Chief of Naval Staff and other service chiefs to work with him and help him to make sure that those who are blowing the installations, sabotaging investments in Nigeria, we will deal with them eventually."
On the killer herdsmen, Buhari said they are non-Nigerians who came into Nigeria from Libya.
"because of what happened in Libya, when Ghadaffi, during his 43 year-regime, trained some people from the Sahel militarily. When his regime was overthrown, those people were dispatched to their countries. They found themselves in the Boko Haram and others.
"It is a major regional and virtually African problem now. There is one called Al Qaeda, there is Boko Haram and so on. It is a governmental project now to trace them, disarm them, try them and discipline them."
He said the Fulani herdsmen "culturally do not stay in one place; they move with the season.
"Normally, harvest is complete much earlier in the North. They have to go southwards for greener pasture.
"Initially, there was what they call cattle routes and grazing areas. They were marked. Infrastructures were put in terms of dams and veterinary clinics.
"Later, the big ogas that came, took over these places and turned them to farms. If we have like 500 cattle, if they do not eat for 24 hours or they want water, you can't stop them.
"But what they used to do then, if anybody goes outside, he would be arrested, taken before a court and he is fined. If he can pay, the money is taken and given to the farmer. If he can't pay, the cattle is sold and the farmer is paid. So, people are behaving well.
"So, when people came and took away the land for the cattle route and grazing area, you find out that from Kaduna to Bayelsa, Nigerians are fighting cattle rearers now.
"When I was in PTF, we made a comprehensive study of cattle routes and grazing areas throughout Nigeria. So, I am referring the Governors' Forum to it and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. Let them see what they can do and save the situation."
On 2016 Budget implementation, he said:
"It depends on the efficiency of the technocrats. Yes, we have six months to implement the budget. You know why there was a delay. There is something called padding. I have been in government since 1975. I was governor of what is now six states: Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, that used to be North East. Then I was in Obasanjo's cabinet, Petroleum for three and a quarter years. I was Head of State for 20 months.
"I had never heard about that one padding until this year. And what does it mean? It means that the technocrats just allowed the government to make its noise, to go and make the presentation to the National Assembly. They will remove it and put in their own.
"When we uncovered this, we just had to go back to the basics again. Ministers had to go again and appear before the Minister of Budget and National Planning and make presentations again. This was clearly brought out by the Minister of Health.
"I saw with my own eyes, nobody told me. I was watching NTA and he appeared before a committee that said the minister should come and defend his budget. He looked at what was presented to him as his budget and he said he had nothing to defend, that that was not what he presented.
"Subsequently, we discovered that it was not only the ministry of health. So they allowed us to talk rubbish as government and they do what they like."

Lagos remains most attractive investment destination in Africa - Ambode

Posted: 14 May 2016 01:29 AM PDT

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday emphasised the leadership status of the State as the most attractive location financially and socially for investment in Africa, just as he reiterated the commitment of his administration towards putting in place policies to attract investment and facilitate conducive atmosphere for businesses to thrive.

Governor Ambode, who spoke in Lagos at the grand opening of CFAO Yamaha Showroom and Assembly Plant, said with a population in excess of 21 million, a significant proportion of which comprises of the mid-class with strong purchasing powers, he was convinced that the State has what every investor desires in investing in any city.

He said aside the fact that Lagos accounts for 60 per cent of Nigeria's industrial capacity, the State also attracts between 70 to 80 per cent of $6bn annual Foreign Direct Investment (DFI) into Nigeria, adding that measures are being taken to increase the figure by 50 per cent.

The Governor lauded the collaboration between CFAO of France and Yamaha of Japan to bring about the joint venture in Lagos Nigeria, saying the partnership was good news for Lagos economy and a boost to the efforts of his administration in bringing investment to the State.

"The significance of locating this Assembly Plant in Lagos is very clear. Lagosremains the most attractive location financially and socially for investment in Africa. I have come to assure you that you have made the right decision to locate your business here," he said.

He said the take off of the CFAO Yamaha Plant in Lagos brings the number of assembly plants located in Lagos to over 10, adding that the State still has the capacity to accommodate more plants.

Besides, Governor Ambode recalled how his administration, upon inception, prioritized the issue of making Lagos the first choice destination for foreign investment.

While stating that the State is open for business and serious investors, Governor Ambode assured investors and would-be investors that government would continue to invest in security, job opportunity and infrastructure which are the tripod upon which his administration was built.

He said: "We will therefore continue to invest in the critical infrastructure and security to guaranty safety and good return on investment. As a government, we will continue to explore ways to create an enabling environment to make your business thrive. We are committed to introducing new incentives for businesses in Lagos to enable them grow, support the society and take more of our youths off the street.

"The ease of doing business is of concern to us and as a result, we are working to improve the indices of doing business in Lagos while we continue in our commitment to carry out judicial and security sector reforms."

Earlier, Chairman of CFAO Yamaha Motor Nigeria Limited, Mr. Gbenga Oyebode thanked Governor Ambode for making out time not only to personally attend the event, but also arriving on time, saying the development was an eloquent testimony of the Governor's commitment to encourage investment in the State.

Also, Managing Director of the company, Mr. Olivier Levigne said the vision of the firm is to be the grand company and a great organisation that is an open enterprise and a leader in its chosen field.
