Update: Photos of the Nigerian woman, Obiamaka Aduba, who was allegedly strangled by her husband Posted: 23 May 2016 09:47 AM PDT These are photos of 26-year-old Obiamaka Aduba who was allegedly strangled by her husband, Anthony Lopez, 31. The photos obtained by the Advance from her Facebook page, one taken inside and another outside -- depict Aduba with long dark hair and a serious look on her face. Her husband, Anthony Lopez, 31, is the man police believe wheeled her lifeless body down a Mariners Harbor street a metal dolly on Friday after he allegedly strangled her to death.Arraigned in Richmond County Supreme Court before Judge William Garnett on Sunday, Lopez plead not guilty to second degree murder. He was remanded on homicide without bail. Lopez was also arraigned on criminal mischief charges from earlier this month. Published reports say Lopez beat her in the past and had her work as a prostitute. Her mother tried to help her, reports say, to no avail. When reached by telephone on Sunday, a woman who identified herself as Aduba's mother refused to talk about her daughter's brutal death. Lopez, 31, was apprehended in East Harlem's 23rd Precinct on Saturday. He was taken into custody following a manhunt using helicopters and dogs. Police said they found Lopez while acting on a tip and that he was arrested following a brief foot chase. They added that he had shaved his head to disguise his appearance. Cops had been searching for Lopez since early Friday morning when an off-duty police officer observed him wheeling Aduba's lifeless body on a metal dolly in Mariners Harbor, police said. The officer reportedly recognized Lopez because he had arrested him in the past. The officer approached Lopez, who then dumped the body in front of a home on Post Lane and fled, according to cops. Aduba was wrapped in a sheet and had bruising on her body, but it wasn't immediately clear if the marks had anything to do with her death. The city medical examiner will determine the cause of death. Lopez has a lengthy criminal history, including 34 prior arrests, 15 of which are sealed. Those prior arrests include charges of robbery, theft and assault, police said. Also see more photos of the suspect. |

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said an off-duty detective saw Anthony Lopez, 31, using a metal dolly to transport the corpse of 26-year-old Aduba Obiamaka on Friday, May 20. Officers tried to question him after spotting the body underneath the sheet but Lopez allegedly went on the run for 24 hours. NYPD detectives said he shaved his head to avoid detection but was arrested in Manhattan on Saturday. He has been charged with murder and concealing a human corpse. The medical examiner will determine what caused the death of Obiamaka, who police believe was Lopez's wife. It was not immediately known if Lopez has a lawyer. |

Posted: 23 May 2016 09:35 AM PDT A man arrested for Islamic State (IS) links was an aviation technician responsible for local flights carrying business and political leaders, according to the South China Morning Post. The 49-year-old, a former Royal Malaysian Air Force technician, has been employed for 13 years by a firm servicing planes used by the VIPs, and was responsible for determining airworthiness. One unnamed security official said the man could have sabotaged an aircraft and smuggled weapons onto a plane. "The suspect is a senior technician whose responsibility was to check that an aircraft is safe for use. He is the person who gives the green light whether an aircraft is safe to take off or not," a security official was quoted as saying by the SCMP in its report Friday. The report said the aircraft maintenance company services chartered flights for "VVIPs" to travel domestic routes.According to the report, the man was arrested in late March together with 14 others in several location in Malaysia over suspected link with the IS terrorist group. It added that while 14 others have been charged in court, investigation into the engineer was still underway. "He has conducted religious classes where he propagated IS ideology," the official was quoted as saying. He is known to actively support IS via his Facebook account. He has shown IS videos on his mobile phone to his friends with the aim of promoting ISIS," the official added.Associate Professor Kumar Ramakrishna, head of policy studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies Singapore, who also spoke to SCMP, said the discovery raised concerns of "insider threat of transnational terrorism". "Such a person would have the ability, at least in theory, to sabotage an aircraft with VVIPs on board either through by deliberately tampering with onboard systems, causing them to fail in mid-flight, or by placing an improvised explosive device onboard, assuming that he can gain access to one, or has the ability make one himself," Kumar was quoted as saying. The news report said the engineer was the second suspect in the aviation industry to have been arrested over alleged support for IS. It said that, an armed auxiliary policeman was arrested last year at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport after he had allegedly helped the departure of his brother-in-law to Syria to fight for IS. The police have, so far, arrested more than 160 IS suspects and based on the news report, at least 19 Malaysians are known to have died in Iraq and Syria fighting for the IS cause. Posted: 23 May 2016 09:26 AM PDT In an audacious heist involving thousands of coordinated withdrawals, 100 thieves in Japan made away with $13m in just under three hours and what's more, none of them have been apprehended. Police believe that as many as 100 people worked together using forged credit cards containing account details illegally obtained from a bank in South Africa. The attack which took place on the morning of May 15th appears to have been the brainchild of a criminal mastermind. The fake cards were used in 1400 ATM's and each person made a withdrawal 100,000 yen – the maximum allowed by the cash machines, they were able to cart away more than 1.4bn yen (US$12.7m) Japanese police have requested the assistance of the authorities in South Africa, via Interpol in establishing how the credit card information was obtained.Transaction data retrieved from the cash machines suggests that the criminals used information for 1,600 credit cards issued by the unnamed South African bank. According to local media, the daring operation went into place early on Sunday the 15th, the withdrawals began just after 5am with the last one made just before 8am the same day. Reports suggest that members of the gang may no longer be in Japan. They made sure to buy themselves enough time by using cards issued in another country and carrying out the theft on a day when banks won't be open, by the time the crime was discovered, they already had a good headstart.
