'My domestic abuse story' - LIB reader shares her story Posted: 09 May 2016 12:51 PM PDT The LIB reader writes below... I have made mistakes, the worst was getting married. Marriage is to me a cage where man and beast collide and attempt to make peace amidst jeers from bloodthirsty onlookers hungrily calling for a violent display of strengths. We have a beautiful daughter together, who is my everything, but her cherubic beauty was not enough to calm the bubbling volcano of rage that constantly boiled beneath the surface of his heart, the heart of a man that was my husband for a full two years. Two years of heart wrenching pain and warm salty tears. The beatings were such a common occurrence that I grew addicted to tasting my tears and felt oddly disturbed if a day went by without crying. My heart often rattled in my chest, I didn't seem to be doing enough, meals where never tasty enough,I wasn't beautiful enough, my fashion sense and judgment wasn't glamorous enough, even my natural maternal instincts were continually faulted by my slave master. The only thing I was good for was 'mating', because that was what it was- no kissing, no foreplay, no sweet words, just the sudden penetration and angry thrusts of an impatient man. Oftentimes, while he was on top of me, I allowed my thoughts take me away to a land where I felt safe, far away from my slave master. Where I could be beautiful, where I could be the kind of slave he desired. Heaven knows I did my best those two years, I cooked, cleaned, cared, most of all I loved. But one bitter truth I have come to know is that lov One of such painful memories that still float around in my head was when I decided to surprise him by redecorating our living room. That turned out to be one of the wrongest moves I ever made. After a hard days' job of lifting heavy furniture while carrying a baby strapped to my back, I finally looked around, feeling happy to have planned such a surprise for my beloved husband. He walked in after work, looked around and questioned me as to why I left his living room in a mess. Long story short, an argument ensued and subsequently evolved into a fight. As I lay crying in the bedroom, I wondered how I could ever please this man. Did he love me? The scars on my body were emblems of his brutality. There were times neighbors banged on our door urging him to stop beating me, there was a time I was badly pummeled in church right in front of his mother, what was my crime? I found out he was having an affair while I was pregnant with our first child and asked him about it via sms because I was too scared to confront him for fear that he would get mad, he got mad alright, after beating me ,he seized my phone and left me stranded in church while people looked on at me with obvious pity in their eyes. Little things like not reaching orgasm during sex left him in a fit of silent rage which often erupted into full blown war hours or a few days later, ultimately I learned how to fake a genuine orgasm. I met him a few years ago in the University. He was a year ahead of me and stood as a mentor and tutor during my sojourn through school. We had a bittersweet relationship. The bitter often over shadowed the sweet, heck! I can barely remember the sweet times. Sadly, I remained in a toxic relationship because I listened to ignorant statements like "pray for your man, he would change" or "na woman dey fit change man. " Thinking back now, I'm deliriously glad I summoned courage to leave such a toxic atmosphere. What would have become of my daughter in such an environment? What would have become of her mother? I'm one of the lucky few that left while they could. Sadly, Domestic abuse against women is gradually accepted as a natural part of a woman's status as her "husband's property". People are often quick to put the blame on the victims of domestic violence by asserting that these women either depend solely on husbands financially,or that they may have been trying to take over the man's role as the head of the house simply because the poor woman has a career. The silliest justification I have heard is that some women are not praying enough for their families thus the devil has found a way into homes. Total balder dash! Any man who resorts to hitting a woman is an animal. Simple and short. Domestic abuse occurs in many forms and could be physical, sexual or psychological. This menace has more than reared it's ugly head, its shoulders are now very visible, a systematic approach has to be put in place to change the orientation of our Nigerian men and women. From my experience, I feel the vows taken during marriage should be reviewed, especially the part that says "for better for worse", this phrase short as it may seem is like a death sentence often subjecting people to untold torture. A lot of victims of remain in abusive relationships/ marriages until they are finally maimed, killed and sometimes lose children. The time has come to stand up and say no! The short term and long term effect of domestic abuse on women is devastating. In my case, I lost hearing in my right ear, lost a 4 month old twin pregnancy, my self esteem diminished totally, fortunately, I'm lucky to be alive because where there is life, there is hope. Many women have not been as fortunate as I am. |

The Kaduna State government had thrown open the doors of the venue for free to allow fans to watch the crucial AFCON qualifier which ended 1-1 More than 40,000 spectators entered into the 15,000 capacity stadium in Kaduna, and sat anywhere they could find space, from the floors, to the score board and flood lights and now CAF has reacted with this suspension saying such action puts the players and officials lives at risk. |

Is there a natural way to preventing a misarriage? Posted: 09 May 2016 08:41 AM PDT Miscarriage is not what any woman look forward to. It's painful and highly disturbing. The process of conception, and sustaining a pregnancy, up to the time of delivery are all very complex, requiring an abundance of nutrients and proper balance within the hormonal framework in the body. A miscarriage is the loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy.About 15-25% of recognized pregnancies have been noted to end up in a miscarriage. Is there a natural fertility remedy to overcoming a miscarriage especially in those who have had it more than once? Is there a correlation between hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and the risk of having a miscarriage? Let me quickly introduce you to a woman who has a story to tell from the standpoint of how she leveraged on an information made available to her by a friend and thereafter had a bouncing baby boy after suffering three different episodes of painful miscarriages. A miscarriage is not a palatable experience and efforts should be put in place right now to fight it using this non-invasive and Natural Aprroach. |

Untreated hypertension will kill you Posted: 09 May 2016 08:21 AM PDT Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in Sub- Saharan Africa in adults over the age of 30. Untreated Hypertension is the number one risk factor. A detailed estimated survey carried out in Nigeria by researchers from Edinburgh University in UK, found out that hypertension affects one in three men and one in four women in Nigeria. http://bit.ly/24vHBiq A recent World Health Organization (WHO) reports, stated that hypertension is responsible for an estimated 45% of death due to heart disease and 51% of death due to stroke globally. High blood pressure is a much stronger cardiovascular risk than high cholesterol. The damage to blood vessels caused by hypertension leads to hundreds of thousands of hearts attacks and strokes worldwide each year. It is a very dangerous disorder. Conn's Current Therapy, a highly respected medical reference defines how hypertension greatly reduces longevity: http://bit.ly/24vHBiq '' A 35-year old man with an arterial pressure of 130/90 will die 4 years earlier than another 35-year old man with the same medical background but with normal pressure. If his pressure is 140/90, he will die 9 years earlier and if its 150/100, he will die 17 years earlier''.People with hypertension have a much greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, another deadly disease, and most people with diabetes sustain their greatest harm from the hypertension that frequently accompanies it. http://bit.ly/24vHBiq Untreated hypertension is the number one risk factor for death from heart attack, stroke, kidney failure vision loss and circulatory failure in Nigeria. In recent time, both old adults and younger Nigerians are fallen victim to this deadly disorder. It is nickname the ''silence killer'' because it does not often show any symptoms. High blood pressure is in reality a disease of the blood vessels and since blood vessels supply oxygen and nutrition to every organ of the body, damage to blood vessels can eventually lead to damage of any organ. What is Blood Pressure? Blood pressure is the force applied against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. The pressure is determined by the force and amount of blood pumped and the size and flexibility of the arteries. Blood Pressure Guidelines Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). According to current adult guidelines, blood pressure is categorized as normal, prehypertensive, and hypertensive. http://bit.ly/24vHBiq Your blood pressure readings can vary significantly from day to day -- even from morning to evening, and often within the same hour. It is when your blood pressure remains consistently elevated that significant health problems can occur. Treatment: Medical doctors overwhelmingly recommend drug therapy for this condition. These doctors believe that the only viable treatment option for high blood pressure patients is medication and that high blood pressure patients must take their medications for the rest of their lives and worst of all, that high blood pressure medications are safe and effective. But is drug therapy the best approach? And, is it safe? http://bit.ly/24vHBiq The drug industry dominates the information that most mainstream doctors receive, so that pharmaceuticals become the primary and often only option prescribed for high blood pressure. http://bit.ly/24vHBiq Hypertension class of medications There are four main types of high blood pressure medication: 1. Calcium channel blockers 2. Beta adrenergic blockers 3. ACE inhibitors 4. Diuretics Most top-selling antihypertensive drugs come with potential side effects as listed above that may include fatigue, sedation, dry mouth, cough, dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, rash, itching, flushing, swollen legs or ankles, depression, sexual dysfunctions, and metabolic imbalances. Moreover, even when they lower blood pressure, prescription drugs do not eliminate one's risk entirely. People with controlled hypertension still have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke than those who have the same blood pressure but never developed hypertension in the first place. Why is this? Mainstream medicine does not have the answer. One explanation is that while drugs can be effective in blocking some of the factors that cause elevated blood pressure, these medications do nothing to address the intracellular imbalances that lead to the development of hypertension. http://bit.ly/24vHBiq In other words, mainstream medicine treats the symptoms of hypertension but does not address the underlying causes. Because nutritional imbalances and other deficits remain, some of the risk remains as well. http://bit.ly/24vHBiq Fortunately, there exist powerful natural and vital supplements and lifestyle treatment options that safely and effectively reduce and normalize high blood pressure without the lethal side effects from drugs. But don't assume that your doctor will tell you about them because many doctors are simply unaware of the facts. For more details, click here now: http://bit.ly/24vHBiq |

Lagos state rakes in N101.69billion in first quarter of 2016 Posted: 09 May 2016 08:05 AM PDT The Lagos State Government says it generated a total revenue of N101.69bn in the first quarter of 2016 out of which a surplus of N4.85bn was realized as against an expected N29.92bn deficit. Read the statement from the government detailing its revenue generation below... The Lagos State Government generated a total revenue of N101.69bn in the first quarter of 2016 out of which a surplus of N4.85bn was realized as against an expected N29.92bn deficit, the State's Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Akinyemi Ashade said on Monday. Speaking at the ongoing Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja to commemorate Governor Akinwunmi Ambode's first year in office, Ashade said the generated revenue was above that of 2015 which stood at N97.28bn in the first quarter, adding that in absolute terms, the revenue performance was N4.4bn more than comparative period of 2015. Ashade said the remarkable feat was achieved despite the diminishing statutory allocation from the federation account, adding that same was due to Governor Ambode's purposeful and visionary leadership. He expressed optimism that with the implementation of multiple revenue collection channels and broadening of the revenue base, the State Government would achieve tremendous progress in its revenue drive. Giving a detailed breakdown of the budget performance, the Commissioner said N76.06bn was the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the State in the first quarter representing 72 percent of the estimate for the quarter and 75 percent of the total revenue, as against the N67.21bn generated in first quarter of 2015 representing 74 percent of the estimate and 69 percent of the total revenue in the corresponding period for last year. He said the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) revenue for the first quarter of 2016 stood at N67.25bn representing 90 percent estimate for the quarter and 88 percent of the total IGR and 66.12 percent of the total revenue, compared to N60.58bn (87 percent of the estimate for Q1 Y2015), representing 90 percent of total IGR and 62 percent of total revenue in 2015. "This performance was N6.67bn more in absolute terms compared to corresponding period in Y2015 and due largely to more participatory structural and systemic re-engineering. "Over the course of the first quarter of Y2016, Federal transfers contributed N25.64bn (83 percent of the estimate for the quarter) and accounted for 25.21 percent of total revenue. Further breakdown showed that statutory allocations contributed N7.48bn while VAT contributed N18.16bn," Ashade said. Speaking on performance of capital expenditures for the period under review, the Commissioner explained that in the regard, the government expended N48.88bn on capital projects which represented a 51 percent better performance of N15.08bn (24 percent) as at the first quarter of 2015. He also revealed that as at the end of first quarter of 2016, the ratio of capital expenditures to recurrent expenditures closed at 50:50, better than a ratio of 21:79 recorded for the same period in 2015 but short of the ratio of 58:42 projected for 2016. He, however, expressed optimism that capital expenditure performance would experience significant improvement in the second quarter of 2016 based on the projections and expectations of revenue inflows. Ashade, whose Ministry is also responsible for managing the State's existing relationships with development partners as well as identify new potential ones to drive further development, disclosed that the State Government has gone into partnership with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to invest in a possible monorail project that will link Marina to Oniru in Victoria Island and Ikoyi, and later connect to the Lekki Rail Line project which is also in the works. He clarified that the monorail project is an urban mass transportation project different from the ongoing Blue Line Rail project that will connect Mile 12 to CMS, and the Red Line Rail Project. According to him: "A detailed feasibility study has been commissioned on the monorail project to validate the initial survey, which will eventually lead to an investment of US$1billion (about N300billion) in the project if the results of the feasibility study are positive, amongst other conditions." Ashade further disclosed that under the Eko Urban Project, the State Government, in partnership with the Agence Francaise De Development (AFD) would soon embark on the upgrade of slums in Amukoko in Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the State and Ilaje-Bariga in Bariga Local Council Development Area of the State, as well as the provision of modern waste disposal facility in Epe. He said projects would soon take off as the AFD has already committed a US$100m loan for the projects, while the State Executive Council has equally approved the upgrade of the slums. |
