'I can't stop Ekiti workers from going on strike, these are perilous times' - Ayo Fayose

Posted: 26 May 2016 12:42 PM PDT

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose says he cannot stop workers in the Ekiti state civil service who intend to go on strike over unpaid salaries. Fayose said this in an interview session with pressmen yesterday May 25th
"I want to make some clarification particularly on issues that affects the welfare of our workers. I want to say very expressly that workers are the engine room of government and they deserve all the encouragement but currently we are in crisis financially, the average wage bill in terms of payment of workers is between 2.5 to 2.6billion which includes parastatals, university, college of education and all that.
And since I became governor I have always put this before the leadership of labour, each time they give us a figure from Abuja, I give the paper to them for them to share and bring it for signature. Obviously at some point we all realized that there was nothing to share or probably for what we earn when you are to pay 2.5 or 2.6 billion as wage bill and you now get 1billion, you get 800million, you get 1.2billion, there is nothing to share. So rotating an alternating payment in terms of paying the university, the college of education, higher institution and so on, we pay them this month and pay the major work force next month. That has been the practice and we work with a technical committee of labour and government, we meet monthly to disburse. I want to tell u very expressly that it has not been easy. As it is, last month I got about 850million, the month before which was the month of March I got 1.1billion, February I got about 1.2billion and in December I got about 1.3billion, it has not been easy and I want to say very expressly that I am owing four months salary and with the month of May it will be five months. This is not about Ekiti alone, all states reasonably are affected by this development irrespective of which governor, which party controls that state. So as it is, I am doing my best within the ambits of availability. You will recall that I took over a debt profile of commercial loan of over 31billion where deductions are made from source and apart from the commercial loan we have the bond by the last administration as a result, it is difficult for me to sustain the salaries. Ekiti has the least in Nigeria in terms of IGR(internally generated revenue) and most of the times if you don't pay, if you pay the basic it means you don't expect tax next month, that has been the style, that has been the situation. Right now I am helpless and that is the fact. Yesterday, the 25th of this month, the commissioner for finance called me that we got 751million which is one third or one quarter of the wage bill. So I need to set this record straight, I have been guided and being careful and that is why most of the time when workers doesn't come to work, I don't have the morals to go and stop them from coming late or not coming to work because when you don't pay wages you are handicapped to enforce discipline in the people. As it is, I am doing my best on the needful but it is difficult for me to sell myself or my wife or sell my property, it is a trying time for our state and for Nigeria, I can only deploy what I get from Abuja within available resources, we are trying our best to improve on the internally generated revenue. You will discover that it is very difficult to squeeze water from a dry tissue paper. You can't get money when people don't get wages, when the money doesn't circulate, when business are not running, taking IGR from them will be a bit difficult. As it is, this is the position, I just want the public, the workers to understand that it's in my priority to make them very comfortable, apart from wages, it is the responsibility of government to provide electricity,it is the responsibility of government to provide security, to provide for the less privileged, water among others. This has been very difficult, even in government house most of the times we don't have diesel to power generators, so we have to move to the office during office hours and when we move home, we use generator for the government house. It's been very tough and that's the position but I can't stop workers from going on strike, if you want to go on strike I can't stop you, I can only give explanation which I have given and the best I could do is what I can do. So I sympathise with them but I am helpless, if you want to go on strike, we will be waiting when they will come back.
On his message for the Labour leaders who were threatening to strike:
It is not about threatening, what you have is what you can give, we do this meeting together Technical Committee every month, they have facts more than myself but I don't want to join issues, I appreciate their patience, I appreciate their situation, the same situation they are in is the same situation I am in. So I want to say very clearly, even if you hate the labor force, will you hate the political leaders and political class, No!
He appealed to the workers to see reason with the state government on why salaries are not being paid
The plea is to all see reasons with the present situation, it is a situation beyond anybody and everybody. If you go to Osun State, go to Ogun, go to Oyo, most states don't even have commissioners, they don't have means, so I won't blame anybody, the financial situation I have said it long ago that this time shall come, this are very perilous times, difficult times, I share the pains of the common people in our society, it is not right time to be governor I must confess to you.
He also explained why is still being able to fund capital projects in the state
Some ask me, but you are doing some capital project like the fly over, and the new market, yes! I said it, I made it public a year ago that the federal government arranged a loan for each state for 10billion which must be attached to capital project in each state. I made it public in one of 'The Governor Speaks', and I have attached the flyover, the new market and one other project, I have attached that money to them. The money goes to them from source, so this is to clarify the misrepresentation regarding the projects, it is not as if we have the money in our coffers, the money is with the banks and they pay contractors directly. In fact, there are a lot of agreements signed by contractors that won the projects before they can get the money and it is being regulated by the bank with our approval.

From homeless to $100m! Steve Harvey opens up about overcoming homelessness

Posted: 26 May 2016 09:24 AM PDT

Comedian, actor, talk show host and best selling author, Steve Harvey has had some ups and downs and now the comedian is opening up about being homeless at the beginning of his career. His rags-to-riches tale is one of integrity, ingenuity and success.

For an interview with People, Harvey revealed that while he's now amassed an empire estimated to be worth $100 million, he was once homeless and living out of his Ford Tempo. The Family Feud hosts says that there were moments when he wasn't sure how he'd make it through.

"It kills me when I hear very successful people say, 'I always knew I would get here,' " he says. "I didn't. I always hoped I would get somewhere, but this is above and beyond. My imagination didn't even go this big."

"Everybody has a moment when they turn back, when you say to yourself, 'This is too much,' I had it on several occasions."

And, when Harvey realized that he'd hit his lowest point he still found a way to get through it.

"I sat down and started crying, but a voice said, 'If you keep going, I'm going to take you places you've never been.' It was like God said, 'Don't quit, you're almost there.'"

And he got there! His bestselling 2009 book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man has been adapted into a blockbuster film and a sequel. He now hosts a syndicated radio show as well as the game show Family Feud and a hit daytime talk show, The Steve Harvey Show and most recently he hosted NBC's hit variety series Little Big Shots.

But when he first quit his job to take a chance at being a comedian, he found himself separated from his wife, on his own and living on as little as $50 a week.

"That was an ugly period, just very painful," he says of becoming homeless in the late '80s. Everybody has a moment when they turn back, when you say to yourself, 'This is too much,' " Harvey says. "I had it on several occasions."

Success shortly followed, with Harvey landing a high-profile gig performing on Showtime at the Apollo in 1993, and eventually, a sitcom, and a spot on Cedric the Entertainer and the late Bernie Mac's Original Kings of Comedy tour.

Even now, though, with a happy marriage and family life, as well as his status as a television mainstay, Harvey says he can't slow down.

"I'm running from homelessness," he shares. "I can't ever be in that position again. If my show gets canceled, I've got three more. I don't have any free time, but I have 12 jobs."

South Carolina Governor signs legislation that bans abortion after 19 weeks

Posted: 26 May 2016 09:13 AM PDT

South Carolina has become the latest state in the United States to ban abortion. Republican Gov. Nikki Haley signed the legislation yesterday and the law outlaws all abortions at 20 weeks beyond fertilization unless the mother's life is in jeopardy or a doctor determines the fetus can't survive outside the womb.

Like most similar laws, it contains no exceptions for rape or incest. According to the Bill sponser, Republican Wendy Nanney, she is hopeful the law is a step to eventually get rid of abortion altogether.

Doctors now face up to $10,000 in fines and three years in prison if they are found carrying out an abortion illegally.

University staff diverted N11b for former NIMASA boss, Akpobolokemi – EFCC witness tells court

Posted: 26 May 2016 08:55 AM PDT

A prosecuting witness in the ongoing trial of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Joseph Nwobike, today told the Lagos High Court in Igbosere how the sum of N11, 316,295,549.29 was allegedly diverted from Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) into accounts operated by a staff of Niger Delta University (NDU), John Simon Adomene.

Nwobike is facing a five-count charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice and offering gratification to a public official, a charge he denied.

The Nation reports that the prosecuting witness, Orji Chukwuma, who is an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) witness, told the court that Adomene laundered the money on behalf of an ex -Director-General of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi.

According to the prosecuting witness Chukwuma, in 2015, the commission received intelligence on "a monumental fraud perpetrated in NIMASA."

"In the course of the investigation, it was revealed that one John Simon Adomene, a staff of Niger Delta University was used by the DG of NIMASA, Dr. Patrick Akpobolokemi, to perpetrate this fraud. Subsequently, efforts were made to trace accounts linked to John Adomene and companies linked with him," he said.

He listed the companies to include Wabod, Global Resources Limited, Gokiad Marine Services and Boloberi Properties and Estate Limited. "We traced billions of naira in accounts and properties to these companies which were merely fronts for Dr. Akpobolokemi," Chukwuma alleged

Naija youths no fall my hand - Charly Boy

Posted: 26 May 2016 07:41 AM PDT

Read his article below...
The other day, I was at radio continental where Wale Powpowpow and his crew engaged me in a fierce discourse about the future of many of our hopeless youths.
I was so mad about the youths predicament in Nigeria, that I kept swearing, cursing and dissing our leadership for mortgaging and stealing away the future of the Nigerian youth.
Trust me, by the time I gave my phone number out on radio, the phone lines were jumping off the hook, Hummm come and see calls. Many who called in, plagued to stand behind me on battle day.
"Nonesense why would you people stand behind me and not besides me, how many times have I led different groups in the advocacy of whatever their challenge may be only to turn around and not see anyone behind me or is it the people you're fighting for  always denying you?"
For any nation or people to succeed, such people must be united in their effort with unabated spirit to fight for a course which is no other than social justice and equality. However most Nigeria youths are wasting and dying in the sad river of frustration, dejection, sofocation and total hopelessness, Chai!!!

Most of our youths these days are, incapacitated, unwilling, unable and incapable of standing up for their rights. How can they? When most of us are still collecting pocket money from our parents, some still writing Jamb., can't feed or fend for themselves, still jobless and not even making any tangible effort to reshape their bleak future. My guys why have most of us become so docile?

Why for Christ sake ain't we angry, what can Sagging our trousers achieve when we have been robbed of our destiny and future by all the Yahoo yahoo kalukalu leaders. Why for heavens sake are you not Mad that the leadership for long have never cared about us, hence they have killed education because all their children are abroad in the best schools with our stolen money. Oh God!

Our Mumu never do?

'Our son’s life in danger' - Metuh family cry out

Posted: 26 May 2016 07:41 AM PDT

This is a press statement from the family of Chief Olisa Metuh. Read below.

The entire Metuh family has been following the issues regarding our son, Chief Olisa Metuh and his ordeal since his arrest, detention and arraignment by the EFCC since January this year. We are aware that the matter regarding our son is subjudice hence we shall only comment on matters that are already in the public domain. For the avoidance of doubt, we want to make the following clarifications.

In December 2014, when the issue of the N400 million came up and our son was invited by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), he immediately reported at ONSA. He then made enquires regarding the source of the money with a clear statement to ONSA that if the source of the money is from government coffers, he was willing to refund accordingly not minding that the money has been expended as directed by the former President. At that time, ONSA did not make the necessary clarifications.

Upon his arrest on the 5th of January 2015, the EFCC went to town mentioning several figures that were not the exact amount of money transferred to our son's account. They alleged that N1.4 billion arms deal money was traced to his account and that he has been receiving N4 million monthly from ONSA. They kept him in detention for a period of 9 days after which he was transferred to Kuje prison where he spent another 13 days.

Nigerians are aware that of all the people who have been facing the predicament of having worked for either the PDP or the previous Federal Government, our son has been the only one that was brought to court in handcuffs, paraded as a common criminal and treated without any dignity whatsoever.  Eventually our son was granted bail under one of the most stringent conditions ever in the history of our country. Fortunately, we were able to meet the bail conditions and our son has been facing trial since then. He has been cooperating with the judiciary and done all required of him in the course of the trial.

May we also point out that since his arrest and even up to about a week ago, our son has made several overtures to the arresting authority for him to refund the money since they now claim in court that it came from government coffers. All efforts have been unsuccessful.

It is instructive that out of over 300 names listed as having received money from the ONSA, all those who offered to refund money were not arraigned in court.  Our son is the only one whose offer to refund money was rejected and has been arraigned in court and his case given accelerated hearing. On each trial date the hostility in the courtroom is palpable.

As we speak to you the offer to refund the money to the federal government is still open and the government is yet to accept the offer. It is therefore clear to us that the intention is not the recovery of funds but a clear persecution of our son.

Our son was diagnosed with a spinal cord problem in 2004. He has consistently managed it over this period. However, due to the treatments he received while in custody, the situation got aggravated. In the course of his trial, the situation deteriorated, especially after he fell at a meeting in the party office for which he was rushed to the National Hospital and was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit. Notwithstanding the grave medical condition, he still kept his court date the very next morning in spite of medical advice by the doctors. On another such occasion he vomited in court and had to be rushed back to the hospital where he is lying critically ill.

Upon doctors' recommendation, our son made application to be granted leave and his international passport released for him to travel to a recommended neurological hospital in London for immediate, critical delicate corrective surgery to save him from imminent irreversible paralysis.

We are therefore shocked that with all the information available to the court regarding his grave medical condition and the critical need for him to have this corrective surgery, the Federal High Court Abuja refused his application. It is also instructive to note that the Federal High Court Abuja on the same day granted leave to someone facing similar trial to go abroad for one month for prayers while our ailing son is not allowed to travel for urgent medical attention. We are also aware that a few others facing similar trials, within the same federal high court jurisdiction, have been granted leave to travel for medical treatment and their passports released to them by the same court where they were granted bail.

It is absurd that the main reason given by the court for refusing the application is that there are several teaching hospitals in Nigeria that can handle such critical spinal problems, especially as this dramatic claim by the trial Judge has no medical basis whatsoever. This is clearly one of the tactics being used by the court in an attempt to whip up public sentiments against our son in this courtroom media trial moreso when it is judicial notice that even public officers are allowed to travel abroad on ordinary medical check-up and at public expense. Our request is on the basis of a life-threatening ailment and will be undertaken with our own private resources.

Sadly, as we speak, our son is lying on admission at the National Hospital where his spinal ailment is fast deteriorating and doctors fearing the worse for his life. He currently relies on palliatives being given to him at the National Hospital Abuja waiting for the opportunity of a corrective surgery.

The essence of a criminal trial is to achieve justice and no justice can be achieved if someone dies in the process. We feel more convinced that this is a political vendetta considering the fact of his efforts to pay back the money if it came from government coffers not minding that the money has been expended as directed by the former President.

Till date, the powers that be have shown that they would rather prosecute our son than accept a refund of the money. For those who are conversant with the goings on in the court, it is no longer news that our son was not informed that this money came from a source other than from the former President. Why then this concerted effort to silence him finally.

Our concern now is that that our son should not be sentenced to a life in a wheel chair especially as we believe that the paramount interest of the authorities should rather be more on the recovery of funds. In this case, our son has from the onset shown his willingness to refund the money rather than dragging in other party members involved in the said assignment.

Finally we want Nigerians to note that our son has never held any public office, has never worked for any arm of government and is not being charged for stealing and/or corrupt enrichment.

Signed:

Chief Gilbert Metuh.
For and On behalf of the Metuh family.

Photos: Man bitten on penis by 10-foot python while using squat toilet

Posted: 26 May 2016 07:39 AM PDT

38-year-old Thai man is recovering from a bloody encounter with a 3-meter (10-foot) python that slithered through the plumbing of his Chachoengsao provine, east of Bangkok home and latched its jaws onto his genitals while he was using a squat toilet.

Attaporn Boonmakchuay is pictured smiling as Thai television stations interviewed him in his hospital bed but photos of his blood-splattered bathroom were testimony to his ordeals.

He told Thai TV Channel 7 that he struggled to remove the snake for 30 minutes Wednesday before he managed to free himself with help from his wife and a neighbour. After his wife tied a rope around the snake, Attaporn pried open its jaws before passing out.

Emergency workers dismantled the Asian-style squat toilet, with the python still twined through it. The snake was taken away to be released back into the wild.

According to an emergency responder cited by the newspaper Thai Rath, doctors said Attaporn, bloodied but unbowed, will recover.
"He has a really good attitude... even though his own wife and children were in shock. He's been smiling and giving interviews all day from his bed," hospital director Dr. Chutima Pincharoen said.
