Posted: 29 May 2016 10:07 AM PDT Johny Depp's long-term ex partner and the mother of his two children, Vanessa Paradis has dismissed Amber Heard's domestic violence claims as "outrageous" and has said the actor is a sensitive and loving person. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge last Friday issued a temporary domestic violence restraining order against Depp after his wife Heard alleged he had been violent towards her on multiple occasions during their 15-month marriage. Heard appeared in court, with a visible bruise on her face, alleging that Depp threw a Phone at her face last Saturday and a month before "grabbed [her] by the hair and violently shove [her] to the floor". In court documents, Heard wrote, "I live in fear that Johnny will return to the residence unannounced to terrorise me, physically and emotionally." The 43-year-old French actress dismissed said Depp was not once physically abusive to her during the 14 years they lived together. They were in a relationship between 1998 and 2012 and have two children together, Lily-Rose and Jack. In a letter obtained exclusively by TMZ, Paradis wrote: "In all the years I have known Johnny, he has never been physically abusive with me and this looks nothing like the man I lived with for 14 wonderful years. He is a sensitive, loving and loved person, and I believe with all my heart, that these recent allegations being made are outrageous," According to TMZ, Depp's first wife Lori Anne Allison told friends that Depp, to whom she was married between 1983 and 1985, was a "soft person" who was never aggressive during their relationship. |

Over 700 EU-bound migrants, including 40 children feared drowned in the Mediterranean in three days Posted: 29 May 2016 09:51 AM PDT More than 700 migrants are feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in the last few days as they tried to reach Europe in smuggling boats, according to the U.N. refugee agency. One of the victims is believed to have been a migrant woman who was decapitated after a rope tying two boats together was cut by a trafficker, creating a deadly whiplash effect. A boat that sunk on Wednesday left 100 people dead and 45 bodies were recovered from a shipwreck on Friday. In addition, the UNHCR and Save the Children have been told that another vessel, carrying at least 500 people, sank without trace in the middle of the Mediterranean on Thursday, bringing the combined death toll to at least 645. "We'll never know the exact number, we'll never know their identity, but survivors tell that over 500 human beings died," Carlotta Sami, UNHRC spokeswoman, said on Twitter.Survivors who were rescued at sea and brought to ports in Sicily told officials that Thursday's disaster involved two boats – the first one, carrying around 500 migrants, was towing the second, which was also carrying about 500 people. When the second vessel began to take on water and sink, the alleged captain of the first boat, a Sudanese man, cut the ow rope, causing it to whiplash and hit a migrant woman in the upper body, taking off her head. The second boat then sank, taking down with it most of the migrants, who were packed tightly into the hold, as is usually the case with voyages organised by the pitiless trafficking gangs who operate along the Libyan coast. The Sudanese man was arrested on his arrival in the port of Pozzallo along with three other suspected people traffickers, Italian media reports said. "We tried everything to stop the water, to bail it out of the boat," a Nigerian girl told cultural mediators, according to La Stampa daily. "We used our hands, plastic glasses. For two hours we fought against the water but it was useless. It began to flood the boat, and those below deck had no chance. Women, men, children, many children, were trapped, and drowned," she said. The dead included around 40 children, including babies, survivors said. Good weather and calm seas has resulted in a sharp increase in the number of boats making the crossing from Libya to Italy. Source: AP,REUTERS/AFP |

Democracy Day: Let's keep hope alive, Atiku Abubakar urges Nigerians Posted: 29 May 2016 08:16 AM PDT Former Vice President and chieftain of All Progressives Congress Atiku Abubakar says democracy, despite its limitations and challenges, remains the best form of government anywhere in the world. In his message to mark Nigeria's Democracy Day, the former Vice President explains that the freedom of choice is one of the most important ingredients of the democratic system. According to him, the freedom to choose your leaders makes democracy fashionable, adding that any system that subverts the will of the people destroys the progress of the society. The Turaki Adamawa says as an active participant in the democratic struggle in Nigeria and an ardent proponent of the rule of law, rather than the rule of man, he recognises the sacrifices of gallant Nigerians whose struggles brought us to the current stage. According to him, as Nigerians celebrate democracy day, the memory of late Shehu Yar'Adua and MKO Abiola would resonate across the country, adding that the sacrifices of countless others who paid the supreme price for opposing dictatorship would also not be forgotten. The former Vice President says no sane society would choose despotism over democracy because, under dictatorship, dissent is met with death or torture. On the current challenges facing the ordinary Nigerians, the former Vice President says no democratically elected government would intentionally hurt the voters that put it into office. He explains that the APC administration remains committed to the welfare of Nigerians, and that the current challenges are temporary. According to him, the 2016 budget is specifically targeted to address the basic needs of the ordinary Nigerians, explaining that the implementation of the budget would bring succour to Nigerians. He therefore urges Nigerians not to lose hope because of the current temporary challenges that they are going through. |

In one year, Buhari/APC ruined Nigeria’s economy - Fayose Posted: 29 May 2016 07:46 AM PDT Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has lamented that in just one year of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of President Mohammadu Buhari, the country's economy was ruined so much that States could no longer pay workers' salaries, millions of jobs were lost, prices of essential commodities skyrocketed to the extent that Nigerians could no longer afford common tomato to cook and the middle class wiped away completely. In a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said; "Despite President Buhari's electoral promise to reduce petrol pump price from the N87 per litre that he met it and make life more bearable for Nigerians, he increased the price of petrol to N145, increased electricity tariff in spite of lack of power supply." He said; "food scarcity last experienced when Buhari was military Head of State between 1983 and 1985 has returned to the country, with Nigerians being unable to feed." The governor who said Nigerians should remove party, ethnic and religious sentiments and ask themselves what they have benefitted in the last one year, reminded Nigerians that "Foreign Reserve was $28.6 billion, Excess Crude Account (ECA) was $2.07 billion, dollars was less than N200, petrol was N87 per litre and most importantly, one bag of rice was N8, 500 and power generation was over 5,000MW when Buhari assumed office. The statement read in part; "Today, power generation is less than 1,400, Foreign Reserve has reduced to $26.5 billion, dollar is now over N350, petrol has increased to N145 per litre and one bag of rice is now over N15, 000!" "I read the president's speech and all that I saw was a president still sounding like he was campaigning for votes more than one year after winning election. It is disappointing that the President's speech was once again about promises, not about what has been done. "Not even a mention of one kilometre of road tarred by this administration, no single job was created except the ones created in Central Bank of Nigeria for their cronnies and children, not a single megawatt of electricity generated. This is shameful. "The reward Buhari gave to Nigerians for electing as president was to increase petrol pump price by N58.50 and get the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo to justify the increment by saying Nigeria was broke! "In other words, President Buhari increased petrol pump price because the country was broke and it needed to shore up its revenue base. The N58.50 added to the previous pump price of N86.50 was an Indirect Tax imposed on each litre of petrol purchased by Nigerians. "It is even more worrisome that we have a presidency that is not coordinated. The president says one thing; his vice says another while his ministers also singing discordant tunes. This is a clear sign of cluelessness and unpreparedness for governance. "I cannot but agree with the position of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Obiageli Ezekwesili and others that President Buhari has no clue economically. The situation of Nigeria today is like the visually impaired leading those who can see. But I warned Nigerians, and I am still warning Nigerians now that as it happened in 1984 when our President was a military Head of State, the economy of Nigeria may collapse! "Therefore, as we look forward to the end of the honeymoon of Buhari's presidency, I wish to state that if supposed men of honour are going underground because of possible harassment and intimidation, I, Peter Ayodele Fayose will not; because this is our fatherland. "Most importantly, those regarding President Buhari as a saint should know that he is not. The president is not also the Almighty God that cannot be questioned. After all, the beauty of democracy is in credible opposition. "Today, I have expressed my mind concerning the one year of Buhari's presidency as I did before the election. This I have done basically to remind Nigerians that I told them then, and it is happening now. "May God be with the President and bless Nigeria." |
