Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her sister, Uche featured in Vanity Fair's Sisters Issue Posted: 02 May 2016 12:47 PM PDT For Vanity Fair's Sisters Issue, award winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie writes about her relationship with her "glamorous big" sister, Uche. But, according to family lore, the attachment started much earlier. I was a fussy baby whose nightly screaming was soothed only by her. Newly weaned, I would eat okra and liver sauce only if she fed me. "By the way," she told me recently. "I ate all the liver—that's why you didn't grow tall." she writes. In my teenage years she was the glamorous big sister who was studying pharmacy at university and had a handsome boyfriend in a white car. I looked up to her. Her beautiful face, seamless grape-dark skin, the gap in her teeth inherited from our mother. I was in awe of her original style. She fashioned dangling earrings from parts of an abandoned chandelier and made bows for her shoes from old handbag straps. At the back of her notebooks were delicate sketches: dresses with large sashes, lavishly shaped trousers. Sometimes she went to her tailor's shop in the market and stood over the sewing machine to make sure the details were right. Many of her clothes were handed down to me. At 12, I wore ruched, fitted dresses when my age-mates were still in little-girl clothes. I was sometimes afraid of her quick temper, her prickliness. I hated domestic work, while she always cleaned with a sweaty zeal. She often scolded me for not dusting the furniture. She was the tough one in the family—the unconventional girl. When she was in primary school, the neighbor's son called her a devil, and she climbed over the hedge, beat him up, and climbed back home to continue her game of table tennis. That evening, the neighbors came over to report to my parents. Asked to apologize to the boy, my sister said, "But he called me a devil." When she was at home from boarding school, she once sneaked into my mother's wardrobe and took her high-heeled sandals back to school. They were promptly seized by a prefect. She told my mother about it more than 10 years later, describing the sandals in detail, laughing. She laughs easily and often. She sends funny jokes by e-mail and WhatsApp. She is the second and I am the fifth of my parents' close-knit six children. Because of the age gap, I came truly to know her as an adult. I fled the study of medicine to become a writer; she is a successful pharmacist. We have different tastes. She touches my natural hair and says, "What is this rough mop?" And I ask of her long, straight weave, "What's that plastic horsehair?" Still, we ask each other's opinions of outfits and hairstyles. We have long conversations about my book events and her pharmaceutical conferences. We talk and e-mail often. I love to spend weekends with her, her wonderful husband, Udodi, who is like a big brother to me, and her 18-year-old twin daughters. Now I recognize what I most admire about her: her transparency, the absence of layers, the bright, focused light that is her loyalty. There is an immense solidity to her. To be her little sister is to feel always that a firm cushion exists at my back. When our father was kidnapped for ransom, it was her steady voice that stilled my despair. "You work so hard," she told me once, simply, matter-of-factly, during an unproductive period, and it made everything seem better. |

Photos: Man and his son brutally attacked by 'area boys' in Sokoto State Posted: 02 May 2016 08:29 AM PDT Residents of Gidan Hakki, Meniyo, Nufawa and Makeran Assada in the Sokoto North local government area of Sokoto state are living in perpetual fear of attack by a group of youth notoriously referred to as "area boys" According to Daily Trust, the hoodlums attacked and robbed residents of the area, they spare nobody, including minors, leaving behind gory scenes and sad tales of horror. Residents said the thugs capitalize on the lack of a police station in the area to enforce law and order, and the many escape routes through which they vanish from the crime scenes into other neighbourhood. Mustapha Makera had just returned from Dala orthopaedic hospital where he underwent a surgery to treat his leg which was broken due to an accident he was involved in last year when he and his son were attacked. The attack left Mustapha and his son wounded due to machete attacks he received from the hoodlums all over his body and that of his son whom he shielded from more attacks. The hoodlums also tempered with the broken leg when they tried to loose the equipments used to aid the treatment which resulted to the undoing of the whole operation. Narrating his ordeal, Makera, said he was lying outside his residence because of the hot weather when he observed people running for safety but he could not run because of his broken leg. "I sighted a group of about 30 youths armed with dangerous weapons around 9pm last week Wednesday. Some of them came to where I was lying, trying to remove the implant and the plaster-of-Paris on my leg. As I looked up, I was dealt a machete blow on my forehead, resulting in a deep cut. At the time, there was my eight-year-old son sitting by my side who they pounced on with sticks and machetes. I tried to protect him by bending over him and in the process got another cut at the back of my head which would have otherwise hit the boy, yet he sustained injury at the back of his head," Makera said.He added that the miscreants stole items like handsets, laptops and other valuables left behind by the fleeing residents and shopkeepers, which they threw into sacks they had brought along with them. Makera said the attack has affected his leg and resulted in further complication that may warrant resetting of the bone, which his doctor said could cost N200,000. Following his appeal for assistance from the state government as he said he doesn't have any money to pay for the resetting, wife of the state Governor, Hajiya Maryam Mairo Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who is also the founder of MMAWT legacy initiatives, sent her aides to locate Mustapha and pledge her commitment to take over the case and foot the bills of his treatment and that of his son. "We are happy to report that her Excellency Hajiya Maryam has since pledged to settle the bills already incurred and has also ordered her aides to facilitate the admission of Mustapha at the Sokoto state Orthopedic hospital, Wamakko" a statement from the governor' wife said.More photos... Photos: baby born with deadly condition where legs fuse together in the womb Posted: 02 May 2016 08:20 AM PDT A 22 year old mother, from Sahranpur, in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, gave birth to this baby who only lived for 10 minutes because he/she had a rare congenital condition called Sirenomelia also known as 'Mermaid syndrome'. The condition is a form of congenital deformity which causes what looks like a single limb, thereby keeping the legs fused together, it also makes it almost impossible to determine the sex of the child after delivery. Doctors in Indian were astonished as they said they have seen congenital disorders amongst children but this particularly one was an extremely rare case. From UK DailyMail: This is the fourth case of mermaid syndrome in the world but the first case reported in India. Dr Vandana Arya, 35, a gynaecologist at the hospital who delivered the baby while addressing the issue said: 'I have never seen a case like this before. We have seen congenital disorders amongst children born with deformities, but this was an extremely rare case. 'The baby was born in a fish-like body, and had its hands spread like fins, which made this case even more unique. The upper body of the baby was absolutely functional but the lower body was not developedA large group of people gathered at at Sahi Ram Hospital for a glimpse of the remarkable new born. Dr Arya said the condition meant it was impossible to determine the gender of the baby. Sirenomelia, also known as 'Mermaid syndrome' is a life-threatening illness, marked by the rotation and fusion of a sufferer's legs. The rare congenital deformity causes what looks like a single limb, resembling a fish tail, in the womb. Medical historian Lindsey Fitzharris, who has a PhD from Oxford University, previously told MailOnline the condition occurs from a failure of the normal vascular supply, when the umbilical cord fails to form two arteries. As a result there is not sufficient blood supply reaching the foetus, she said. The single artery 'steals' the blood and nutrition from the lower body, diverting it back up into the placenta. Suffering malnutrition, the foetus fails to develop two separate limbs. The condition is extremely rare, affecting one in 100,000 babies, but is 100 times more likely to occur in identical twins. Dr Fitzharris added: 'Sirenomelia is extremely fatal. There are no accounts of anyone with this condition surviving in the past. Most died within days of being born due to kidney and bladder failure. Even today, the odds are against those with sirenomelia, though there are a handful of examples of children living past infancy. In this case, the woman did not complain of any complication during her 30 week pregnancy. However, an ultrasound during the last stages of her pregnancy revealed the baby's kidneys had not developed.'Another specialist Dr Vandana said: "There are several causes of this condition like excessive medicine intake, a vitamin deficiency, genetics, past history or even maternal diabetes. It also results from a failure of normal vascular supply from the lower aorta in uetro. The operation in these cases is not possible due to the improper development of the body. In some extreme rare cases, the kidneys can be transplanted but the survival rate." |
