President Obama formally endorses Hillary Clinton for president

Posted: 09 Jun 2016 01:06 PM PDT

US President Barack Obama formally endorsed Hillary Clinton's White House bid on Thursday and called for the Democratic Party to unite behind her after a protracted battle with Bernie Sanders for the party nomination.

Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, said it "means the world" to her that Obama has her back.
The endorsement increases pressure on Sanders, a US senator from Vermont, to concede the race so the party can focus on campaigning against Donald Trump, the Republican presumptive nominee for the Nov 8 election.

"It is absolutely a joy and an honour that President Obama and I over the years have gone from fierce competitors to true friends," Clinton told Reuters in an interview.

Obama defeated Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary and she went on to serve as secretary of state in his first term.

Obama, who enjoys strong approval ratings after nearly eight years in office, will campaign with Clinton next week in Wisconsin, her campaign said.

"I don't think there's ever been someone so qualified to hold this office," Obama said of Clinton in a video. "I'm with her. I am fired up, and I cannot wait to get out there and campaign for Hillary," Obama said.

Obama had been expected to support Clinton since she won enough delegates this week to clinch the Democratic nomination and become the first woman to lead a major US party as its presidential nominee.

Sanders, who met with Obama at the White House earlier on Thursday, said afterward he would work with Clinton to defeat Trump. Sanders said, however, that he would stay in the race to compete in the final Democratic primary vote in Washington, DC, on June 14.

Photos: Muslim funeral service begins for Muhammad Ali

Posted: 09 Jun 2016 12:46 PM PDT

Two days of funeral ceremonies bidding farewell to Muhammad Ali began today with a Muslim prayer service in the Kentucky hometown of the beloved boxing legend and civil rights hero.

Thousands of people stood in the cavernous Freedom Hall arena in remembrance of one of the 20th century's most singular personalities, who died last week at age 74. People in the crowd held up their cellphones to snap pictures as the coffin holding Ali's remains moved by.

The brief ceremony in Louisville launched two days of interfaith tributes – bringing together VIPs and ordinary fans – to a man known for both his tenacity in the ring and his social activism outside of it, on behalf of African-Americans and social causes at home and around the world.

The three-time heavyweight world champion died after a decades-long battle with Parkinson's disease. Born Cassius Clay at a time of racial segregation in the American south, the boxer converted to Islam in 1964, changing his name to Muhammad Ali and shocking America.

Thursday's prayer service was held at the site of Ali's last fight in his hometown, where he defeated Willi Besmanoff on Nov 29, 1961.

"The service is a traditional Muslim funeral," Imam Zaid Shakir, who helped organise it, said earlier. Muhammad Ali has a very, very special significance for the Muslim community. This is about... sending him off in the very best of fashion, and honor his memory, live his legacy and love each other as he would wish."

On Friday morning, a funeral procession will wind through the city of 600,000, passing sites that were important to Ali: his childhood home, the Ali Centre, the Centre for African American Heritage – which focuses on the lives of blacks in Kentucky – and, of course, along Muhammad Ali Boulevard before arriving at the cemetery for a private burial.

Actor Will Smith – who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Ali on the silver screen – and former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis will be among the pallbearers.

The Ali family asked news media not to film the burial from helicopters.
"Please use discretion and we will encourage you not to film the burial service from afar, from your helicopters flying over the cemetery," family spokesman Bob Gunnell told a press conference on Thursday.

On Friday afternoon, Ali will be honoured at an interfaith memorial service at a large sports arena that will bring together heads of state, VIPs and fans alike. More than 15,000 people are expected to attend.

Tesslo concepts unveils ‘Flotus’, a collection for Women

Posted: 09 Jun 2016 12:38 PM PDT

Award winning Nigerian fashion designer Tessy Oliseh-Amaize has raised the bar in fashion design once again with the unveiling of 'FLOTUS' – a world-class collection of designs for women.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja at the unveiling of the collection, Tessy, the Creative Director of Tesslo Concepts and Fashion Design graduate of Middlesex University, United Kingdom attributed the inspiration for the collection to diverse cultural experiences garnered across different continents of the world.

"The inspiration for the collection comes from a wide range of experiences and interactions with different cultures and civilizations from Africa to Asia to America and Europe. If you pay close attention, you will also see traces of fashion from the 50s, fashion for corporate women as well as elegant and playful styles for women of all classes and tastes", Tessy explained
Asked why she christened the collection 'FLOTUS', she had something interesting to say.
"I was actually expecting that question. Yes I am a big fan of the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama and this collection was partly inspired by her bold and elegant sense of style. But FLOTUS by Tesslo Concepts means more. It's an acronym. It means 'For Ladies Of Trendy Unconventional Style (FLOTUS)'. This collection is in many ways about women who are bold, daring, powerful, eccentric and adventurous with style. The FLOTUS collection is a creative mix of the conservative and risqué", she said.

In 2006, Tessy beat 126 other Nigerian fashion designers to emerge winner of the Best Fashion Designer Award at the Nigeria Fashion Show (NFS) in Paris. In the same year, she was nominated for the Future Awards' Entrepreneur of the Year (Beauty & Style) category.

Her designs have been showcased at several fashion shows from Nigeria Fashion Week to Stars on the Runway, Nigeria Model Awards and Encomium Black and White Ball alongside top Nigerian designers like Modela, Zizi Cardow, among others.

Young Nigerian man calls out 2 girls who claim to be his girlfriends on Instagram

Posted: 09 Jun 2016 09:59 AM PDT

An Usman Shagari took to Instagram to warn two young women who have been going around telling people that he is their boyfriends. He wrote;
"It has been brought to my attention that a certain @jessica___cole and her friend 'Sarah' whose Instagram has not been disclosed to me have been going around telling people I am dating them. She has on numerous occasion lied that she is my girlfriend and I came to Abuja in February to see her when I was in fact still in London at the time.
Jessica and Sarah are both pathetic and compulsive liars, they had to audacity to say I wanted to run away with her and start a family but I can't because I'm Muslim. I have NEVER met nor had any contact with any of these liars prior to finding out what has been going on. Apparently Jessica is based in Lagos and 'Sarah' is light skinned and based in Abuja. If people that are close to Jessica can help me identify and embarrass the so called Sarah girl it would be appreciated. Any girl who currently tells you im dating or seeing her here in Nigeria is lying and should provide you simple evidence such as my personal number or a picture of us together or even me following her back"

And the lady replied him...

Ladol presents Sterling example of sustainable growth

Posted: 09 Jun 2016 09:46 AM PDT

Managing Director of Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics Base (LADOL), Dr. Amy Jadesinmi featured prominently at the recent Global Green Growth Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she discussed her role on the Global Commission of Sustainable Development.

Hosted by the government of Denmark, it was attended by representatives from 3GF partner countries; China, Ethiopia, Kenya, The Republic of, Korea and Mexico along with representatives from new partner countries Chile and Vietnam.

More robust participation at the summit was made by decision makers from 37 different countries across the public and private sectors along with civil society.

There were also over 450 high-level delegates attended the event including representatives from 68 private companies.

Her presentation focused on the need to proliferate a new social contract. Jadesinmi premised her presentation on the experience of LADOL over the last 10 years. She emphasized that her company was developed in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), even before they existed. According to her,
"we prove that private sector can derive significant profits while achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by pursuing opportunities in growth markets like Nigeria and West Africa. SDGs have been part of LADOL's DNA for a decade, our success comes from the fact that we private invested in building capacity to service a clearly defined and drastically underserved US$ 200 billion market in West Africa. Respecting and empowering local communities and civil societies is one of the first things investors should do to identify and tap into these opportunities – even the poorest people in the world will invest in healthcare and education given the option, in many cases they are paying for these things already – the role of government and NGO's is to facilitate and define opportunities, the role of private sector is to execute and sustain."
She also posited that
"SMEs and other companies in high growth markets need to do their part to attract investment by being Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) compliant and better quantifying the private sector opportunities they have identified."
The 3GF platform which acts as an accelerator made a global commitment to advancing green transformation at speed and at scale. Jadesimi serves the Global Commission for Sustainable Development as one of its 31 commissioners. The Commission is chaired by Lord Mark Malloch-Brown.

The opening plenary session which featured Dr. Amy Jadesinmi had other panelists including Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Prime Minister of Denmark,  Mr. Tran Hong Ha, Minister for Natural Resources and Environment, Vietnam,   Inger Andersen, Director General, The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), Niels B. Christiansen, CEO, Danfoss, Connie Hedegaard, panel moderator and Chair of Board of KR Foundation and CONCITO and Karmenu Vella, the European Union Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

The 3GF2016 summit Charter of Action include a call for the creation of an international Sustainable Infrastructure Registry, Promotion of Sustainable Lifestyles, Transition to a New World of Energy, Use of Natural Resources, a call for deeper collaboration on sustainable use of water across Africa, Latin America and Asia and the call for a multi-stakeholder platform to examine the consequences of water pricing.

Nike stands by Maria Sharapova despite tennis star's 2-year drugs ban

Posted: 09 Jun 2016 09:37 AM PDT

Despite the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tribunal handing Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova a two-year ban from the sport for failing a drugs test, Sportswear giant Nike have decided to stand by her and have renewed their deal with Sharapova.

An ITF statement yesterday concluded Sharapova didn't intentionally violate doping regulations by taking meldonium - the illegal drug she tested positive for - and Nike used that as their justification to resume their sponsorship deal with Sharapova, which they suspended in March when news of her failed drugs test emerged.

A Nike statement said: "The ITF tribunal has found that Maria did not intentionally break its rules. Maria has always made her position clear, has apologised for her mistake and is now appealing the length of the ban.

"Based on the decision of the ITF and their factual findings, we hope to see Maria back on court and will continue to partner with her."

Sports equipment manufacturer Head, who provide Sharapova's rackets, have also decided to stand by the 29-year-old.

Sharapova confirmed on Facebook that she will contest her ban.

She wrote: "Today with their decision of a two year suspension, the ITF tribunal unanimously concluded that what I did was not intentional. The tribunal found that I did not seek treatment from my doctor for the purpose of obtaining a performance enhancing substance.

Posted: 09 Jun 2016 08:37 AM PDT

Hundreds of men and women have gone topless to stage a protest on one of Britain's most popular beaches (Brighton) to 'Free the Nipple' and make boobs more acceptable in society. The campaign's aim is to highlight social media policies over banning nipples. They want social media to allow women's nipples to be visible.

Despite the event, which held on Wednesday, being a success the group are already planning for another march in the upcoming campaign on August 28.

The protesters marched from Brighton Pier to East Sussex city seafront before stopping on the beach where everyone sunbathed topless.

The event was organised by comedian Samantha Pressdee, who came to Brighton with her one-woman comedy show about nudity and sexuality.
Samantha said:
'I've been a member of the Free The Nipple campaign over the past year. I joined the campaign to challenge the way women's breasts were perceived. Breasts have been sexualised and the point of this campaign is that they don't have to be sexual.'
We had a lovely time, loads of pictures were taken. We ended up relaxing on the beach, some people decided to go for a swim whilst others brought out their guitars'.
