Herdsmen reportedly return to Nimbo community, threaten to unleash more terror on community members

Posted: 08 Jun 2016 12:59 PM PDT

Just a month after some herdsmen carried out attacks on residents of Nimbo community in Enugu state killing several people, another set of herdsmen have reportedly arrived the community, threatening to carry out more attacks on the community members.  The Sun reports that the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe John Ikemefuna Akoh, disclosed the recent development to members of the Nsukka General Assembly who paid him a courtesy call recently.

In his words:
"We are glad you people are here today to also share our present fear. For the past two days, our people have not been going to farm as Fulani herdsmen have taken over the entire farm in Nimbo community destroying farmlands and threatening to unleash more terror. Some of our people who saw them said they told them that they were back to unleash more terror with more sophisticated weapons. The herdsmen chased them away and ushered their cattle into the farm. Since then, many people have left the village because they are afraid that more disastrous attack would happen at any time. We have called the Divisional Police Officer in charge of this area and he said they did not have fuel in their vehicle," the Igwe said.
A member of the group, Chief Nnia Nwodo immediately called the state's Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu, to inform him of the recent development. The commissioner then told the group that he will immediately order men of the Nsukka Police Command to move in and forestall any breakdown of law and order. Chairman of Nsukka General Assembly, Prof. Lawrence Ochor charged the youths in Nimbo community to mobilise and protect themselves.
"I urge the youths of Nimbo to mobilise themselves and protect their village from the menace of Fulani herdsmen. We cannot run away from our village, it is time full state of emergency is declared so as to avert another possible attack. We are confident that the administration of Governor Ugwuanyi is on top of this matter but, more effort is needed from everybody to rescue our state from the hands of Fulani herdsmen."
The community, has however called on the state government to declare a state of emergency in the area so as to help avert the impending danger. Speaking through their spokesman, Apostle Dr. Akachukwu Clement, the community said their lives have been threatened following the return of Fulani herdsmen.

"No amount of security personnel can stop these people."

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court Cambodia, yesterday, June 7, heard the case of a self-described Nigerian footballer allegedly arrested with 100 grams of methamphetamine in the capital's Choam Chao commune in January. During the short hearing, the 30-year-old Nigerian national Francis Ihenwe Oderah, confessed to having acted as a delivery man, but asked the court for clemency as he was not a dealer himself.

"A woman called me to receive the drugs from a motodop and then bring those drugs to customers, promising to give me $50. When I got the drugs, I brought them to her customers near a petrol station in Choam Chao and the police arrested me,"
Oderah said in a statement to police, which was read aloud in court and confirmed by Oderah himself. Oderah said he knew the woman only over the phone, and had been put in touch with her by a Nigerian friend.

A test of the 100 grams of meth, the results of which were also read in court, showed they had a purity of about 72 per cent.

He asked the court to release him, saying "I know I was wrong to break the law".

A verdict is due on July

Photo: Kaduna Govt condemns criminal attack on Francis Emmanual as El-Rufai visit victim

Posted: 08 Jun 2016 10:25 AM PDT

The Kaduna State Government has strongly condemned the criminal attack on citizen Francis Emmanuel who was assaulted in Kakuri yesterday (Tuesday).

The government has directed the police to arrest the perpetrators of the attack, warning that there is no room for religious violence and criminality in the state.

The state governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, today led a team of senior government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Architect Barnabas Yusuf Bala, to visit Francis who is recuperating at the St. Gerald's Hospital. The governor comforted the victim and promised that the government will not allow any criminal to hide under any religious guise or to use religion as justification for violating the right of any citizen.
"The government will not allow anyone to get away with any crime using his or her faith as an excuse. There is no compulsion in religion. It is a free country, and that means no imposition of faith or religious practices on anyone.
"We sympathize with our fellow citizen, Francis Emmanuel. We have assured him that we will not allow anybody to violate his right, or that of any other citizen. The Kaduna State Government is resolute in its stand that all criminals, including those who try to hide under Christianity or Islam, will be tackled and prosecuted.
"We have been given faith to live our lives in obedience to the Almighty, and to let that obedience manifest in our kindness to others, the honesty of our conduct and the consistency of our hard work. Care and compassion for others is one of the noblest ways of demonstrating love for God.
"We implore everyone to do their duty to uphold peace and security in Kaduna State. We should not allow differences in faith to be a barrier to harmony or a cause for conflict. Nobody can impose the tenet of his faith on another person. The decision to observe any religious activity is the prerogative of the individual.
"Let us all remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the security agencies."

Not even 10 million soldiers would have stopped Stephen Keshi's death - Brother

Posted: 08 Jun 2016 10:20 AM PDT

In December 2015, former Nigeria Head Coach Stephen Keshi lost his wife of 33 years after a prolonged battle with cancer, and this morning news of his death was confirmed by his family, with tributes pouring in from media, sports and entertainment personalities. His brother, Ado says the Delta state born coach was destined to die and nothing would have stopped his death.

"It is true, my brother has passed on. He has gone to meet his wife," said Emma Ado. It's very painful, but it is what God has destined. Not even 10 million soldiers would have stopped it. But we give glory to God."
Keshi never recovered from the death of Kate; they were inseparable. He has gone to meet Kate. Since the wife died Keshi has kept on mourning and has been in sorrow. All these time Keshi has been acting, giving the impression that he was fine and man enough to bear the sorrow but the truth actually is that he was down and in pain over the death of his wife.
From companionship to cooking and other domestic matters nobody could be like his wife to him; they were irreplaceable. The man just went to join her", he added.

NFF mourns Nigeria legend, Stephen Keshi

Posted: 08 Jun 2016 09:47 AM PDT

The Nigeria Football Federation has expressed deep shock at the death, in the early hours of Wednesday, of former Super Eagles Captain and Coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi.
NFF President Amaju Pinnick was too shocked for words: "This is devastating. We have lost a superhero." Other Nff executives also had something to say.

Pinnick confirmed he had been in contact with the family and would lead a delegation of some NFF Board and Congress members to Benin City on Thursday.
"The NFF Board will meet and decide on the best way to honour Stephen Keshi. We will be fully involved in the arrangements for the final burial rites."
Pinnick has directed that all centres hosting matches of the Nigeria Professional Football League on Wednesday should observe one –minute silence before kick –off. The NFF has already informed the Confederation of African Football and the world body, FIFA about the passing of the legend.

Keshi won the Africa Cup of Nations as a player and as a Coach. The only person to achieve similar feat was Egyptian Mahmoud el-Gohary, who is also of blessed memory.

The man who made Keshi captain of Nigeria in 1983, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, told the nff.com on Wednesday morning: "This is too much of a shock. May his soul rest in peace."

Only eight days ago, the legend had put a call through to the Super Eagles' camp in Luxembourg, during which he spoke to interim Head Coach Salisu Yusuf and wished him well in the job. The Eagles went on to beat the Red Lions 3-1. Yusuf was one of Keshi's assistants when he coached Nigeria between November 2011 and June 2015.
His death came only five days short of a year to his last match with the Eagles – a 2-0 defeat of Chad in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Kaduna.

Nicknamed 'Big Boss', Keshi captained Nigeria between 1983 and 1994, during which he won the Africa Cup of Nations gold, silver and bronze, and led the country to qualify for its first FIFA World Cup finals.
He captained the Eagles at that first FIFA World Cup in USA in 1994, months after also leading the team to win the Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria for the first time on away soil (Tunisia).

Alhaji Sani Ahmed Toro, who was chief executive of Nigeria's football –governing body (as Secretary General) in those glorious days, reacted: "This is a big loss to Nigeria football. Please accept my condolences."

Keshi was assistant to Dutchman Johannes Bonfrere as the Super Eagles finished as runners –up in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000, and then became the first Nigerian to lead the Eagles to Cup of Nations glory at the 2013 finals in South Africa.

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, said: "There are no praise words too big to describe Stephen Keshi. I still cannot bring myself to speak about him in the past tense."

In his 44 months in charge of the Super Eagles, Keshi won the Africa Cup of Nations, qualified the team for the FIFA World Cup finals, led the team at the FIFA Confederations Cup and steered the team to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup.

Before that, he had received global applause after leading tiny Togo to reach their first FIFA World Cup, in 2006. He also coached the senior team of Mali.

A colourful playing career took Keshi to ACB FC of Lagos and NNB of Benin (Nigeria), Stade Abidjan and Africa Sports (Cote d'Ivoire), Lokeren, Anderlecht and Molenbeek (Belgium), Strasbourg (France), Jaguar Bay, San Jose and Sacramento Scorpions (USA) and Perlis of Malaysia.

He represented Nigeria at both junior and senior levels, winning 64 senior caps. His first match for the senior team was against Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso) on July 18, 1981 and his last was the FIFA World Cup clash with Greece in the USA on June 30, 1994.

He will be remembered for, among other things, giving home –based players ample opportunity to compete for shirts in the Super Eagles. He was rewarded for this when home –boy Sunday Mba scored two crucial goals as Nigeria won the Cup of Nations in South Africa, including the only goal of the final match against Burkina Faso.

The late Stephen Keshi is survived by four children.

RIP Big Boss

The 56th NMA Annual Conference, which was held recently pulled a large number of stakeholders, including doctors, other healthcare practitioners, the academia, top government functionaries and key influencers, who expressed a consensus on the need to improve healthcare delivery in the country.

Other practices like cough etiquette, vaccinations, infection control and prevention programs all play critical roles in reaching this goal of an infection free society. She further stated thatregular disinfection of topical and environmental surfaces with antiseptics and disinfectants is an effective approachand also to clean and decontaminate all equipment after use.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), on Sunday in Maiduguri alerted Borno residents that kerosene mixed with petrol is currently in circulation in the state. Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, Borno NSCDC Commandant stated this in an interview with newsmen.

The commandant said that some patriotic citizens alerted the command on the circulation of the adulterated commodity.

"We have been receiving distress calls from the public. A man from Maduganari reported that his house was almost gutted by fire because he used adulterated kerosene. We are surprised how they mixed kerosene and petrol, We don't know whether it is another ploy by Boko Haram to cause havoc," he said. He said the command would leave no stone unturned to apprehend whoever was responsible for the act, and urged the public to report any form of nefarious activities to the law enforcement agencies.
