Sahara Group upgrades vocational centers, empowers 2600 beneficiaries annually Posted: 26 Jun 2016 01:25 PM PDT A total of 2600 beneficiaries in Lagos now have access to capacity building opportunities annually through vocational centers supported by leading energy giant, Sahara Group. This is in keeping with Sahara's quest to enhance economic growth and development in Nigeria. The centers which include The Lagos State Vocational Training and Skills Acquisition Center Surulere and the Oshodi Community Vocational Center, received support in 2014 and 2015from the Sahara Foundation. The Sahara Foundation is equally involved in several interventions in health, education and capacity building, environment and sustainability in its various locations across the globe. Executive Director and Co-Founder, Sahara Group, Tonye Cole said working with the centers has reinforced Sahara's belief that people can be empowered to excel beyond their limitations when linked with the right platforms, partnerships and opportunities. "In every one of these 2600 people resides that innate God given idea that can create value for different people across the globe. Sahara Group is proud of the achievements some of the beneficiaries are already recording in their various disciplines. We are privileged to witness firsthand, the transformation of everyday people whose greatest attributes are their passion and commitment to pursue and realise their dreams," Cole said. According to him, the promoters of the centers deserve commendation and support to ensure sustainability and a brighter future for more Nigerians. "When we consider the multiples of success stories that will emerge from these 2600 beneficiaries every year and those they will impact directly and indirectly, Sahara Group is emboldened to remain committed in supporting and providing guidance to similar vocational centers," Cole added. In June 2014, Sahara Foundation refurbished the dilapidated Textile Laboratory in Oshodi Vocational Center in Lagos, Nigeria. The main objective of this project was to provide opportunities for pupils and adults within Oshodi Community and its environs to gain vocational skills to support gainful employment and/or starting a business. The center's mission to provide basic skills (including Catering, Clothing and Textiles, Laundry, House-craft) was hampered by the absence of essential resources and an enabling environment to promote skills transfer. The project covered structural refurbishment and equipping of the Clothing and Textile Lab as well as capacity building in Arts and Crafts for 10 vocational teachers from various centers within the locality, to positively stretch Sahara's impact. Currently, over 1,000 pupils and locals now have access annually to a conducive, safe and fully functional Clothing and Textile lab for practical sessions In continuation of the growing capacity in the locality, Sahara Foundation in 2015 upgraded the dilapidated Food and Nutrition Vocational Center in Oshodito a 21st century Cooking Laboratory. Following completion of the project, more than 1,000 pupils across 12 Government Primary School in Oshodi Local Government Area (LGA) can now access the fully functional Catering Lab for practical sessions annually. Sahara Foundation had also upgraded the Catering Department of the Lagos State Vocational Training and Skills Acquisition Centre in Surulere, Lagos In February 2014. The center was established by the State Government to reduce the rate of unemployment. With over 600 youths within the locality having access to the facility annually, this enhances prospects for income generation and employment of beneficiaries by notable establishments in the hospitality sector. Photos: Man accused of killing his 20-year-old girlfriend Posted: 26 Jun 2016 01:03 PM PDT A fresh police recruit charged with murdering his 20-year-old girlfriend appeared in court on Thursday, June 23 for his third and final hearing at Phnom Penh Municipal Court, Cambodia. The trial resumed from a postponement last December when the court ordered a reinvestigation of the case due to a lack of evidence. Hong Kalydin, 28, was arrested and charged with murder accompanied by torture in October 2014, a week after the body of his girlfriend Song Davin was found floating on the Tonle Sap river. The court heard a defence attorney witness who claimed to have seen the victim in a nightclub two days before she was found dead. "On the night of October 5, I went to Mekong Nightclub with my sisters and saw five girls and one slim guy sitting inside. On October 7, a body was found on the river. People asked me and three other guys to take the body [out]. Then I saw it was one of the girls I had seen in the nightclub," said witness You Maliki, who works as a fisherman. When the judge asked if he could identify Kalydin, Maliki said, "No, it was not him who I saw in the nightclub."The prosecutor, judge and victim's lawyer all found his account suspect and pressed him on the details. Police stated that DNA testing revealed no semen on the victim's body. Presiding judge Veng Huoth said the verdict would be announced on an unspecified date due to the complexity of the case. Posted: 26 Jun 2016 12:57 PM PDT The 2016 FIBA U-17 World Championship began on Wednesday June 22 in Spain without Nigeria's team following the refusal of the Spanish Embassy in Lagos to give the team travelling visas. It is being alleged that the Anti Human Trafficking Agency (NAPTIP) was responsible for the denial. However, the Acting Director General of NAPTIP, Alhaji Abdulrazak Dangiri has vehemently denied the allegation by the Nigerian Basketball Federation that the agency was instrument to the denial of the Visa. According to Thisday, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) had presented every document ranging from travelling insurance, birth certificates, sworn affidavits by the players parents which the Foreign Affairs Ministry endorsed since they are minors as demanded by the embassy but yet the Spaniards denied them visas. The NBBF all through was working with the sport's world body, FIBA, and the Local Organising Committee on ground in Spain but in spite of all these, the Spanish Embassy which had promised to issue the visa, started shifting grounds from Thursday to Friday last week before they finally returned the players passports to the protocol officer of the Youth and Sports ministry without visas on them. Below is the full test of the Ag. DG on the allegation titled, "DENIAL OF SPANISH VISA TO THE NATIONAL U-17 BASKETBALL TEAM. "The attention of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has been drawn to the news indicating that the Nigerian National Under- 17 Basketball Women team billed to participant in the FIBA Under- 17 World Championship in Zaragoza, Spain have been denied visa by the Spanish Embassy based on a letter from the Agency. We deny this report in entirely. NAPTIP never wrote to the Spanish embassy or anybody at all on this matter. It is true that the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) through a letter signed by its Secretary- General, Okeke Patrick. N wrote a letter to the Agency seeking assistance for the team. Calls were made to the Secretary -General to visit the Agency to clarify the type of assistance needed. He said he will not be able to come but that he will send his deputy. Till today, nobody came from NBBF on the matter and there was no basis to write to anybody or Embassy on it. When the news broke a while ago, my Ag. Director-General, Alhaji Abdulrazak Dangiri and I called the Embassy of Spain in Abuja to confirm the information and we were pointedly told that NAPTIP HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE VISA DENIAL. We were also informed that the visa application was denied based on three issues: i. The application was full of irregularities; ii. The application came late and; iii. The person who signed the application was late and couldn't have signed such an application. It is important that the Basketball federation informs the nation the true position of this matter and not look for anybody to put the blame on. This is the true position.Josiah Emerole Head, Press and Public Relations (NAPTIP) Meanwhile, while addressing the players and coaches after the disappointing news last Thursday, NBBF President, Tijjani Umar said they will be released to return to their various homes "We are however, going to invite most of them for the Africa U-18 Championship holding later this year," Umar assured. The U-17 girls tutored by Coach Adeka Daudu qualified from the African Championship held in Madagascar last year and were drawn in Group A with Canada, Latvia and Japan for the World Championship. Posted: 26 Jun 2016 12:35 PM PDT One of the six suspects, of three different 'One-Chance' gangs, arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command on Sunday has disclosed that the prevailing economic situation in the country has greatly affected one chance robbery operations. The suspect, Adeleke Rasaq, 24, was arrested along with his gang member, Lucky John, 22, in Abule Egba, Agbado-Oke Local Council Development Area. Adeleke, who resigned as a factory worker to join one-chance robbery gang, stated "we don't make much money like before. The present economic condition in the country has greatly affected one-chance business. We have not been able to make much money, everywhere is dry."The suspect added that "Frankly, we have not made much money since Monday. We have been sharing N20,000, N30,000 and N40,000. Unlike before, when I operate alone, I could make close to N150,000 daily. Now, business is so difficult."He continued that, "I teamed up with Lucky because pickpocketing is not easy in Lagos these days. When you toil alone, you might not make much. It has not been easy working independently lately. So, we have to team up to make more money to survive... Both of us live in Badagry. Everyday, we come to Abule Egba, Agege, Fagba, Egbeda to operate. As soon as we made enough money, we would retire for the day."Explaining how he joined the robbery syndicate, he revealed, "I resigned from the company I worked for when I noticed that a lot of my friends in Ajegunle, who were doing this kind of hustling were living better than a lot of Chief Executives. Every guy does this in Ajegunle. We don't see it as a crime, it is called hustling."The suspect also stated that, "I started following them out. It was in the process that I mastered the act. It has been up to six years that I have been in this trade."Members of the second gang, comprising Ubuke Michael, 26 and Obinna Okoro, 24, were arrested in Gbagada after their operational bus with the registration number "FST 890 XM" had picked up two passengers who were going to Alaba International Market and Ladipo Spare Part Market to buy goods. Ubuke, the leader of the gang, had invited a bus driver and a conductor to join his group in one-chance operation. Ubuke insisted "I invited a friend of mine who has a commercial bus. He and his conductor are familiar with the operation. I have so many commercial buses that I can call for operation. I call them to join me at a particular location."Ubuke also stated that, "The driver and conductor do their normal work while we collect belongings of the passengers, drop them off and pass them to the driver to hold on. The two passengers in the bus were our victims. One of them came out of bank before boarding our bus, while another has bulky pockets. We were about to collect their belongings when we were arrested. We don't normally carry more than two passengers during operations. Whatever we make we share with the driver and the conductor; but our share is normally more than theirs. It is so unfortunate the driver and conductor of our operational danfo bus escaped."One of their victims, Boniface Anusionwu, whose phone was found with the gang stated: "I just came out of a bank where I went to withdraw some money for trading and for my rent. I never knew they were robbers."The last gang members , Steven Raphael, 25 and Samali Onafuwa, 27 were arrested in Fagba and Station Bus Stop, Ishaga. Confirming the incident, the Police PPRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, said that there would be no hiding place for criminals in Lagos State, adding that the suspects would be charge to court when investigations are completed. Sadly, all the suspects have roots in Ajegunle. The six suspects had been transferred to SCID for further investigation |

'Stop Intimidating Fayose' Ekiti State National Assembly Caucus cautions FG Posted: 26 Jun 2016 12:13 PM PDT Members of the National Assembly caucus in both the Senate and House of Representatives from Ekiti State have cautioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), against allowing itself to be used to intimidate or harass Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State by the Federal government. The caucus unequivocally condemned the freezing of the bank accounts belonging to Ekiti state Governor by the EFCC, describing it as absolutely illegal, and an affront to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The release issued on Sunday and signed on behalf of the caucus by the Senate Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi reads; "our attention has been drawn to the freezing of the bank accounts belonging to Ekiti State governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose by the EFCC and we wish to state that the actions violates the constitution of Nigeria, which conferred immunity on the governor and the EFCC Act, which mandates the Commission to obtain a valid court order before bank accounts of anyone can be frozen". "It is trite that the condition precedent to be fulfilled by the EFCC to fully exercise its powers as enshrined in section 34(1) of the EFCC Act, with effect to the freezing order on banks and other financial Institutions was not met. Ditto for the fact that for the court to make such an order, there must be papers (Court Process) filed in court and signed by a Judge. "By the provision of section 308(1) (a) of the 1999 constitution (as amended), no suit can be instituted against any sitting Governor in any court in Nigeria. Therefore, no process of the court can be issued, signed or served against Mr. Ayodele Fayose, being a sitting Governor. Knowing fully well that the import of section 308 of the 1999 constitution (as amended), is principally to avert unnecessary distraction of any sitting governor and other beneficiaries of that section. "As much as we are not against the anti – corruption crusade of the government or the investigation of corruption persons by the EFCC, we urge the anti-corruption agency to carry out its functions without political interference from any quarters, while the Federal government on its part, must eschew all actions capable of destabilizing the peace of any state, or threaten our nascent democracy." |

Born in Enugu in 1983, the Los Angeles-based artist creates large-scale works that combine collage, drawing, painting, and photo transfer to weave complex narratives that reflect an abundance of art historical references and images from her own personal archive, as well as from contemporary culture. She is known for exploring a wealth of themes in her pieces such as literature, identity, race, assimilation, and memory, but she specializes in teasing out her own relationship with colonialism and representation as an expatriate working in the US. For Brett Littman, the president of the jury and the director of the Drawing Center, Akunyili Crosby has "a unique voice in the way that she thinks about and approaches portraiture." He told Lauren Cavalli of artforum.com that as the jurors deliberated on whom to choose, her work "kept burning in our minds." Littman added, "I think her work really moved us. We felt like if you are going to give a prize to someone you give it to someone who is going to push the medium forward."Out of the five nominees for the Prix Canson, four were women, three of which were women of color. The artists shortlisted for the prize were Ruby Onyinyechi Amanze, Bethany Collins, David Shrigley, and Lucy Skaer. An exhibition of the works of Akunyili Crosby as well as the four finalists will be on view until July 1. Each year different institutions act as hosts of the award, this is the first time it has been presented in the United States. It has previously been held in Paris (2015) and Barcelona (2014). Akunyili Crosby will receive over $11,000 of Canson paper and an invitation to be part of a residency that was established by artist and former president of the jury, Tunga, who recently passed. Established in 2010, the Prix Canson Award celebrates the legacy of the sixteenth-century paper company Canson, which has been supplying artists such as Ingres, Delacroix, and Van Gogh, among others, for generations. Posted: 26 Jun 2016 10:58 AM PDT The Lagos State Police Command says 6 persons and not fifty were killed during the militant invasion in Igbolomu and Ishawo areas of Ikorodu last Friday June 24th. Addressing newsmen in Lagos yesterday June 24th, the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the command has commenced an aggressive manhunt for the suspected militants. The gunmen, who were alleged to be from the Niger Delta, were said to have come in through the waterways close to the communities and started shooting sporadically, a development which led to the death of some people while others sustained various degree of injuries. Owoseni, who was personally at the scene of the incident moments after the attack, said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Owutu responded with his men almost immediately after he was alerted, adding that mobile policemen were swiftly deployed to be patrolling the affected areas. "The DPO in Owutu went to Igbolomu and the surrounding communities and as of the time he got there, he saw everybody running in panic and it could be maybe because of that immediate response the militants had fled the place and while moving round, he later found six corpses of the people that were killed and the police took over those corpses out of which two were immediately released to their families who said they want to go and bury according to Islamic rights, while we took the remaining four to the morgue. That was how we covered that place until we got support and reinforcement from the Nigerian Army who came to stay with us. I can confirm that the causality is six and no family till now has come out even while I was there to say that they have extra corpses apart from the ones that were recovered by the police in Owutu that immediately went to that place when the incident happened" the CP said.Owoseni said before now, the police had been making arrests in the areas, while the militants who committed the latest atrocity were being hunted, expressing optimism that they would soon be apprehended. "What people must know is that this is not an investigation or operation that you can just say one plus one. The guys are taking advantage of the creeks. They hit and run to the creeks and also use the wee hours in the night to carry out that operation. Anywhere in the world, the military and police hardly operate in the night and so they have been taking advantage of that and that is why we have now emplaced a permanent standby points in all the four areas that we have identified as where they are coming from," Owoseni said.He added that the occupation of the standby points would be sustained by security forces, while a permanent solution would be found to the impunity that was being carried out by the pipeline vandals |

Count President Buhari out of National Assembly crisis- Femi Adesina says Posted: 26 Jun 2016 06:22 AM PDT Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has dismissed allegations by the national assembly leadership that the Presidency was behind its many travails. The Senate during its plenary last Tuesday June 21st, accused the presidency of using the judiciary to fight & intimidate the legislature. Lawmakers made the allegation in the wake of the fresh charges of forgery of senate orders leveled against Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu, for which they would be arraigned before an Abuja high court tomorrow June 27th. In this fresh interview with Independent correspondent in Aso Villa, Innocent Oweh, Femi Adesina, dismissed the claim, stating that President Buhari understands the separation of power in a democratic system "They are independent arms, the judiciary is independent, the legislature is independent of the executive, so if they are independent, how can one be behind the travails of another. It doesn't add up. If you know this President you will know that he plays by the rules strictly. So, he will not have anything to do with undermining any other independent arm of government. Not this President. They can source their troubles to somewhere else, if they have any troubles, but not this President. They are purely independent bodies, they just relate within the ambit of the law and constitution and I have no cause to believe that there is anything wrong with the relationship"he said With the gloomy economy, workers are becoming tensed, and recently staff of the Federal Ministry of Finance protested over poor welfare issues, are you aware of their grievances? I read the explanation from the finance ministry that what they are agitating for had been stopped by the previous government, that explains it. If there would be further explanations, I think its the ministry of finance that would do it, but I think what they have said satisfies me, it suffices for now What would you say is the policy direction of this administration, especially on the economy? It is that Nigerians need to look inward, all the luxuries that we can't afford have to be cut off and that is simply what this government wants to do. There are 41 items under forex ban now, that already shows you the direction this administration is going. Whatever we cannot afford and we can do without let's cut it off. Why do we expend scarce foreign exchange on rice, cement, toothpick or tomato puree; on things that we can produce locally, so that already shows the direction the government wants to take the economy. Nigerians seem to have taken government deregulation policy in its stride, what informed this policy? Not only do you have fuel prices coming down, it shows you that by the time the thing is in full stream, there is going to be competition in terms of prices and people will buy where they like and that very process itself would force down prices. The 2016 budget is undergoing implementation, should Nigerians still maintain high optimism that they had at the inception of this administration? Optimism is part of life, optimism keeps us going. By the time we lose optimism, we have lost everything. So, I expect that we continue to be optimistic. As clear as day follows the night, things will get better in Nigeria. Buhari has obviously made his mark in tackling terrorism but Nigerians would like to know what gave him the impetus to deliver in a short time? The difference is clear. Government is a continuum; we know where the last administration stopped. This government continued from there and we all know where we are now, where we are today is very far to where we were this time last year. In fact, there is almost no comparison between where we are now on the issue of terrorism and where we were this time last year. How was the magic performed to quell the crisis? You know the President himself is a retired General, so he knows what to do. He changed the leadership of the military, he arranged for retraining, arranged for re-equipping, he arranged moral booster for them and everything working together for good has led us to where we are now. But challenges of IDPs have cropped up as a result of terrorism, how would the Federal Government address that issue as well? You know that there are groups and agencies working with the Federal Government on that. There is also the Danjuma Committee set up to ensure that their plight is attended to. There are international organisations working in concert with the Federal Government on that, all I want you to know is yes, the issues of IDPs are being tackled. It is a major issue that is being attended to. How far about the MoUs signed by President Muhammadu Buhari on his recent trip to China, has it been rested? We came back from China with potential investments in excess of about $6billion dollars and it is work in progress now because it's a process, we have signed the Memorandum of Understandings and we must come up with counterpart funding, which was what the Jonathan administration did not do; they signed most of the MoUs but they didn't do their own part of funding. This government, despite the paucity of funds, will do its part. We have heard that the railway transport programme resuscitated by the immediate past administration will come on stream by July, can you throw more enlightenment on that? Yes, the Ministry of Transport is in a better position to tell you but I am aware because I have heard the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi saying that it will come on stream soon, so its a good development. Nigeria is making progress. That shows you the benefits of continuing with the policies and projects of the previous government because that was a project inherited and it was taken forward. A petty government could have come and discontinued it, no it was taken forward and we are in the verge of launching it. It shows you that government must always be large-hearted, broad minded enough to continue the good things it inherited. You have been with the President as one of his media aides in the last one year, how would you describe your experience so far? Fulfilling. I came to do this work in the first place because it is the President, the person of the President brought me. I am not a person that wanted to work in government but the person of the President was the attraction for me and I am happy doing it. I will serve him anyday. |

Man whose wife was killed in Kano meets with Governor Okorocha (photos) Posted: 26 Jun 2016 06:12 AM PDT Pastor Mike Agbahiwe, an indigene of Orodo in Mbaitoli Local Government of Imo State whose wife was killed in Kano by Muslim Fanatics has, for the first time since the incident happened, come back to his home state. He met with Governor Rochas Okorocha at the Government House in Owerri yesterday with his relations and explained that contrary to the widely read report that his wife, Mrs. Bridget Agbahiwe was beheaded, she was beaten to death, not beheaded. He told the governor details of what transpired and how the wife was heartlessly and gruesomely murdered in his presence by the Muslim Fanatics and he survived the attack by the grace of God, otherwise, he would have also been killed because the aim of their attackers was to kill him and the wife. His story below... "One Muslim man called Dauda came to my wife's shop and was washing his leg infront of the shop. My wife told the man to move up a little so that she could arrange her goods, but the man refused. Instead, the man started to molest her, and gripped her neck. In trying to free herself from the grip, Dauda started shouting Alakuba, and angry mob quickly gathered "When we saw that danger was about to occur, we ran and took refuge in the house of a prominent Alhaji, who is a leader in the area. The Alhaji did all he could to calm the mob down. They refused and called him an infidel, and broke into his house and killed my wife in front of me. And if not the quick intervention of the Police who immediately used teargas to disperse them, they would have also killed me. But they destroyed everything I had both the shop, the car and so on." He further stated, "The head of my wife was never beheaded. But the hitting was on her head and with hard objects. The body of my wife is in the mortuary with the head. She was not beheaded as it was widely reported." In his response to the pathetic story of Pastor Agbahiwe, Governor Okorocha described Late Mrs. Bridget Agbahiwe as a heroine because it took more than one hundred men and women to bring her down, describing the gruesome murder of the woman as highly provocative, barbaric and the highest wickedness of mankind, and told Pastor Agbahiwe that the Imo State government would share with him and the family in this moment of grief and pains. Governor Okorocha said, "The problem is not the death of Mrs. Agbahiwe but the manner of which she was killed. In this country, we must learn to live peacefully. No religion supports killing. Anyone who kills in the name of religion is an evil worshipper, and should never mention the name of God. The cold blooded murder of Mrs. Agbahiwe should be seen as a sacrifice for the unity of the country". The governor further stressed, "She died as a martyr. Imo State Government will be with the family in this period of grief, and we shall set up a committee to assist in making sure that she is given a befitting burial. She died a heroine as far as we are concerned, as it took more than one hundred attackers to kill her. Those who killed the woman are cowards. The chairman of the traditional rulers' council in the state would lead a delegation to the Emir of Kano to make sure that such ugly incident will never reoccur anywhere in the country." Governor Okorocha also stated, "We are monitoring the situation and the reports reaching me is that five people have been arrested and taken to court, and finally remanded in custody in connection with the murder of Mrs. Bridget Agbahiwe. This is good enough. It means the Kano State Government and the Police Command in Kano are working to live upto their assurances to me that they would fish out the killers and make them face the full wrath of the law." The governor urged Pastor Agbahiwe not to question God over the killing of the wife, but to bear the whole incident with fortitude. |
