Thank you for your support, I am grateful - Omoni Oboli

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 12:19 PM PDT

Good afternoon people. My name is Omoni Oboli (An actress and movie maker). I am a little emotional as I write this letter. I am emotional because of the outpouring of love towards my new movie, The First Lady.

This is the third week at the cinema and the report we get has been outstanding. We have outsold many Hollywood and Nollywood movies and survived the Nigerian fierce box office battle that I personally think has been designed to favour foreign movies (that is another matter for another day). As I read the latest sales reports from the cinema I am overwhelmed and my heart is full of gratitude to God and everyone that has seen this movie, The First Lady. Thank you.

My gratitude stems from the fact that we have very few female directors and movie makers. As a matter of fact, I have been told that I will not excel as an actress, I did and now many people including a couple of male directors dismissed my chances as a director but today I can boldly claim two box office hits while many of them are yet to have one despite several showings at the cinemas. I am not in any way trying to be boastful, no not at all. I am only trying to reminisce and count my blessings. I have been blessed; the industry and buying public accepted me after 10 years of absence. My marriage is not used to discriminate against me, neither is my non-alliance to any particular clique. I want to say thank you to everyone that has offered any form of support, especially to you guys that have taken out time to see The First Lady. Thank you.

By the way, I am giving out N10 000 to a number of people who will be seeing The First Lady. All you need to do is take picture with you cinema ticket stud, (make sure the date is showing), post it on Instagram, write your own review (what you think of the movie) and tag me @omonioboli on Instagram. You can read more on how to win here

Thank you.

Yours Always
Omoni Oboli

You are still a dictator- PDP tells Buhari, says APC anti-corruption crusade is a sham

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 10:31 AM PDT

PDP has accused President Buhari of being the dictator he was alleged to have been while he was Nigeria's head of state in 1984. At a press conference in Abuja today October 18th, the national publicity secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh said the anti-corruption crusade by president Buhari and the APC has shown that it was an orchestrated plan targeted at PDP and its former governors.

He said while PDP governors were being arrested and questioned by EFCC, Former APC governors who have been accused of corruption are being nominated as Ministers. What he said after the cut...

"It is clearly manifest that the same dictatorial tendencies manifested during the military regime of 1984 is being presently applied in the polity in the attempt to discredit PDP members and weaken our great party ahead of 2019. The APC and its government have been busy denigrating the PDP and trying to appropriate our achievements, while at the same time blackmailing, hounding and harassing our elected members with the aim to cow and force them to leave the PDP and join their party. We have verifiable reports from our key members that agents of the APC have been approaching them to join the APC with threats to use the EFCC to victimize them should they refuse. The APC and its agents have been boasting that they have the powers to deal with or spare any person, depending on the party such person belongs to. This clearly explains why the so-called fight against corruption has been selective and focused against PDP members, despite counsels by stakeholders that it should be holistic and in accordance with the due process of the law. The best example of the curious nature of the war against corruption is the fact that former PDP governors and ministers are being hounded and arrested over apparently orchestrated petitions, while their APC counterparts, who have more damaging petitions are being nominated for ministerial positions. Even other APC former governors who have on-going corruption cases in court are being rewarded with APC tickets for the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa" he said

Read the full text of Olisa Metuh's speech at the press briefing below
Gentlemen of the press, we have called you up this afternoon to, through you, expose the hypocrisy, double standard and dictatorial proclivities of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC Government in its orchestrated anti-corruption fight in Nigeria.
Whereas the PDP has over time restated its support for a credible, holistic fight against corruption, unfolding events have confirmed our position that this administration is only using the anti-corruption posture as a tool to witch-hunt PDP members and perceived political opponents of APC government.
We are aware that having realized that Nigerians have seen through their propaganda, deceit and lies, as well as their ineptitude in handling governance, the APC government is now mortally afraid of the on-going rebuilding in the PDP to take over power in 2019, and is as such, applying every negative means to decimate our great party, including the relentless victimization of our key members.
It is clearly manifest that the same dictatorial tendencies manifested during the military regime of 1984 is being presently applied in the polity in the attempt to discredit PDP members and weaken our great party ahead of 2019.
Even other APC former governors who have on-going corruption cases in court are being rewarded with APC tickets for the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa.
On the issue of Senator Godswill Akpabio, we invite Nigerians to note that in the three rich states of Akwa-Ibom, Rivers and Lagos states, there were petitions against their former governors. Whereas the former APC governors of Lagos and Rivers were rewarded with ministerial nominations, their Akwa Ibom PDP counterpart and the current Senate Minority Leader is being hounded by the EFCC.
This is in spite of the common knowledge that Akwa-Ibom under the Senator Akpabio is arguably the least indebted state in Nigeria, and where the governor appropriately applied available resources to effectively transform the state. We challenge the APC to show Nigerians any of their governor that matched the feats achieved in Akwa-Ibom under Senator Akpabio, whose only building in Uyo is uncompleted and being built with verifiable bank loans.
The PDP therefore state categorically that the orchestrated investigation of Senator Akpabio is politically motivated and targeted at weakening the PDP for 2019 elections, by virtue of his being the face of opposition in the National Assembly.
It is also part of the fight by the Presidency to weaken the legislature as an arm of government and prevent it from effectively carrying out its constitutional role of checks and balances in a democracy.
As we speak, no APC member, despite the public petitions of corruption and squandering of state funds, has been invited or questioned by the EFCC. We challenge the EFCC, as an anti-corruption agency, to show Nigerians any member of the APC it has so far questioned, not to talk of being arrested since the emergence of this administration, despite petitions against them.
Recall that even the case of former Adamawa state Governor Murtala Nyako started before the advent of the current administration but is now reportedly being worked on ostensibly to extricate APC members involved.
This government has established itself as a hypocritical regime that accommodates corruption, profligacy and sleazes in government quarters while hoodwinking the people and witch-hunting PDP members.
The hypocrisy of this administration came to the fore with the show of insensitivity to the mood of the nation as copiously demonstrated in Saturday's ostentatious thanksgiving party (with hundreds of millions of naira spent) by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SFG) Engr. Babachir David Lawal, at a time the people of the North East geo-political zone, where he hails from, are being ravaged by insurgency.
Finally, we request Mr. President to end this dictatorial proclivity of selective anti-corruption war that has characterized the APC government.
Signed:
Chief Olisa Metuh
National Publicity Secretary

El Rufai to critics: You're not happy with my appointments? Climb a mountain & fall; some Nigerians react

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 10:30 AM PDT

Kaduna state governor, Nasir El Rufai yesterday said that all those who are not happy with the appointments he's made since becoming governor can go and climb Kufena Mountain and fall. El-Rufai expressed his anger during the question and answer session at the 4th town hall meeting with stakeholders from Kaduna Central zone.
"If you are not happy with appointments made, you can go and climb Kufena Mountain and fall. It was what you voted that you got because we are aware that there are people who did not vote for us, in fact they worked against us. But now they claim to be APC members and loyal to the party. We know such people. And so there is no way they would expect anything from us. You didn't vote us but you want appointments. What you will get is zero. It is politics and in whatever we do there is politics," he said.
Nigerians have reacted to his statements. Read that after the cut...

Tinubu, Akande made my appointment possible – new SGF says

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 09:37 AM PDT

At a Thanksgiving service and reception held in his honor in Abuja yesterday October 17th, newly appointed Secretary to the Government of the Federation Engr. Babachir Lawal, said his appointment into office by President Buhari in August was made possible by APC chieftains Bola Tinubu and Bisi Akande who put it in the mind of President Buhari to make him his SGF.
"My wife has not met Bisi Akande, she has not met Asiwaju, she has not met Buhari, yet we have been with him. But, it is fundamentally important for Nigerians to know that goodness is not restricted to tribe, religion or political party. My opinion is that if you have no investment in human beings and you just invest in yourself, like most politicians present in this church do, you will end up as nothing.
If you look at just your community for friendship, or you look at your religion or in the same church with you for friendship, I doubt if you will go any where. I am Secretary to the Government today, because those people that I mentioned were the very first to put the idea in the mind of the President. They were the ones that made it possible. Because if it has been left to northerners, it is doubtful if they will take a Christian man to make Secretary to the Government of the Federation. But these friends know me, they know that I am not ambitious. I just want to eat today and tomorrow I will find my way. By the grace of God, I am today the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, something I did not look for, people say it is hard work and dedication. It is not true, it is just by the grace of God that the President will just pick you and say this is your position. I never looked for it and I never expected it. I started getting hints to this job just about two to three days to it, and I thought it was a very big joke. Then I used to call it Timipre Silva project or Baba Akande project, when they mentioned that they heard story about it. Last year, if I was told that I will have an occasion where one single governor will attend, I will not believe it, but here we are today, it is the grace of God that has put all of us where we are today. Governors should know that"he said.

Photos: From identical twin boys to brother and sister

Posted: 18 Oct 2015 09:13 AM PDT

18-year-old Nicole and Jonas Maines were born identical twin boys. Nicole who was named Wyatt at birth, recently made the brave decision to undergo a sex reassignment surgery.
"Being a girl just felt right," Nicole said "It felt like that's what I was supposed to be, and I've never looked back. I've never felt like I made the wrong decision. I've never felt like I'm doing the wrong thing with my life. I just knew this is exactly where I'm supposed to be right now. I knew that I was trans when I was 3 years old. Well, I didn't know trans because I didn't know there was a word for it, but I just knew that in my head and my heart that I was supposed to be a girl."

For her parents Kelly and Wayne Maines, it was puzzling at first.
"I knew that Nicole was different. I didn't know what it was. I didn't know that she was transgender at 3, I just knew she wasn't like the other twin," said Kelly Maines. "She played all the girl roles, she always wanted to dress as a girl character, so I knew there was something different about her. I just made it a point of making sure that I could do whatever I could do for her to get her where she needed to be and also to know she always had a safe place to be with me,"
Nicole's father Wayne struggled with the idea of letting go of one of his sons.
"When the twins were born I had these dreams," he said. "I already knew what deer rifles I was going to buy, and by the time they were 2 years old they were going to have them. Football, basketball, everything we thought about for me was 'the boys.'"
He tried ignoring Wyatt's desire to be different, but over time he came to realize that this is what Nicole wanted. When we let her go out in a dress, and this kid beamed and was happier," Wayne Maines said. "Then I started to think about it, 'man, I gotta change who I am.' … I had to dig deep into my soul and say, 'Hey what are you afraid of?' …You gotta dig deep and ask yourself, 'How much do you love your kid?' and do the right thing."

So Kelly and Wayne supported Wyatt in having long hair and wearing girl's clothing, and Nicole wasn't shy about telling people who she was. When she was in first grade, Nicole said she would go up to someone and say she was "a boy who wants to be a girl."
"I didn't think there was anything wrong with it," Nicole said. "And of course, kids' parents were like freaking out and kids were like 'Oh cool, I like trucks.' … it was just a thing that came with my introduction."
By the time she was in fourth grade, Nicole began to think about changing her name from Wyatt to something new she felt would be more of "a girl's name." She started looking at TV characters that resonated with her and settled on a character's name from one of her favorites.
"There was this character on a show called Zoey 101," she said. "It had Jamie Lynn Spear, I think her name is and like one of her classmates' name was Nicole. And she was just like really quirky and like fun. And I was like, 'oh she's a lot like me. I'm a Nicole.'"
By age 8, "Wyatt" was no longer, but by middle school, Nicole said she was beginning to feel ostracized by her classmates. "Kids would say there's something wrong with me," she said. "And I would come home crying on the bus like 'Mom, Dad I'm a freak. There's something wrong with me. This isn't right.' I'm like, 'It feels right to me but it can't be right because people are telling me that it's not right.' And my parents would tell me, 'Listen, don't listen to them. Be true to yourself. This is who you are. Just be true to you.'"

Jonas was fiercely supportive of his sister during this time. When I was a kid my dad told me to look after her and to protect her and do what you have to do," he said. "So that was a huge responsibility that I had to carry around for a lot of years." Then there was the school bathroom issue. For most of her time in elementary school, Nicole used the girl's restroom without issue, until a grandfather of one of her classmates complained to school officials.

The Maines family filed and won a discrimination lawsuit against their school district in Maine, scoring a big human rights victory for trans kids. The case changed Maine state law. It really did just start out with me calling the Maine human rights commission and going, 'Hey - this is so not right' and I never realized that it would ever spiral to where it did," Kelly Maines said.

Since the lawsuit, Nicole has been in the media spotlight and her family has now become activists for the transgender cause. They are the subject of a new book called, "Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family," to be released on Oct. 20.

It's been a pivotal year for the transgender movement, in part because of Caitlyn Jenner's coming out story. Her speech at the Espy Awards, in particular when Jenner talked about trans youth, struck a chord with Nicole. I'm like, absolutely, because trans youth shouldn't have to take it, they should be able to go to school," Nicole said. "Trans kids, just kids in general, are not to be looked upon by society through a magnifying glass."

Just a few days before her scheduled procedure, Nicole talked about her decision to go through with the surgery and called it her "light at the end of the tunnel." This is always what I needed," she said. "Over almost 18 years of life I've never thought back of you know what no I don't want surgery… I just felt like this is that final piece of the puzzle where my body is finally going to match what's happening in my head and my heart." Now Nicole and her brother Jonas are in the middle of their first semester of college. It will be the first time the twins will be on their own.

These days, the most pressing thing on Nicole's mind is passing midterms. "I'm happy," she said. "I like it. I mean I got my hair done today, I got my make-up on. I'm happy! I mean, I'm Nicole. I'm incredibly happy."
