A plane caught fire at the Fort Lauderdale, Florida airport today, sending passengers fleeing for their lives out of the aircraft's emergency slides. The plane was engulfed in thick black flames before airport firefighters came and extinguished the fire. Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode says he is deeply concerned about the increasing reports of robberies and traffic gridlock he has been receiving from residents of the state. Ambode said this today at the inaugural retreat organised by the State Government for Commissioners, Special Advisers and body of Permanent Secretaries in the state.
"I'm deeply concerned about the issues that Lagosians are sending back to me and the issues range from security issues, traffic gridlock and the environment itself. But again just as we are looking at the immediate solutions to them, there are medium term solutions that Lagosians will see in the next few weeks that we will roll out.
We have declared zero tolerance on potholes and we are deploying more men to ensure free flow of traffic. As we are now in the 'Ember' months, I just want to appeal to Lagosians to be more vigilant, and cooperate with us in all the measures we will be carrying out," he said.
He stated that security agencies have been mandated to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycle operators popularly called Okada riders as they pose a security threat to residents of the state.

At least 11 people, mostly children, have drowned after a refugee boat carrying more than 240 migrants capsized near the island of Lesbos on Wednesday, October 28. More than 200 were rescued, three bodies recovered and 38 people are believed to be still missing. 
 
The tragedy started when the upper deck of an over packed fishing boat collapsed on top of those packed below. Following the collapse, a second boat accidentally rammed the boat carrying the refugees, sending hundreds into the Aegean sea.

Trace Myers, a volunteer in Lesbos with the charity Refugees Start, wrote on Facebook:
     "Today is a day of death. Members of this team have worked relentlessly to give CPR, support grieving people and have watched life pass from children's eyes."
"A woman lost her baby and her husband, another woman saw her three- or four-year-old child die and her other child rushed to hospital." she added. 

Dozens of paramedics and volunteers helped in the effort to assist the survivors. The survivors were wrapped in foil blankets. Eighteen children were hospitalized. Rescue efforts continued this morning with a helicopter from the European Boarder Protection Agency, Frontex, joining the Greek coast guard vessels to search for survivors and recover dead bodies.

Photos: Wife accused of hiring assassins to kill her husband so she could inherit his weath

Mr Polycarp Okumu, a Mombasa based tycoon has taken his wife to court after she hired hit-men to murder him so that she can inherit his wealth. Ms Rose Adhiambo and her house help, Ms Doris Akinyi, allegedly hired hitmen to kill Mr Okumu at Beach Road estate in Mombas. She was detained by police for 10 days.

Police Constable Dominic Kiptum told a Mombasa court that the two suspects and their accomplices conspired to kill Mr Ouma on diverse dates between October 20 and 26.
 
The wealthy businessman also known by the alias Kamili, claims that he caught his wife red handed withdrawing Ksh 1.2 million at Kenyan Commercial Bank, Naivas Branch in Nyali, which was to be used to pay the assassins. Rose was arrested at the bank while trying to contact the killers so that they can pick the money and execute the evil mission. It was also alleged she had made a previous attempt to kill her husband by poisoning but he miraculously survived.

Resident Magistrate Viola Yator allowed an application for the two accused to be detained at Bamburi Police Station.

The two suspects, however, did not object to the application to enable police to complete their investigations.
 
The magistrate ordered that Ms Adhiambo and Ms Akinyi be detained at Bamburi Police Station until November 9, when the case will be mentioned.

Police arraign 3 teenagers in court over alleged gang rape of 13 year old girl

The Police today charged three teenagers, Elijah Adebowale, Suleiman Balogun and Shefiu Adam before a Yaba Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos over the alleged gang rape of a 13 year old girl. How disgusting & sad!

The boys aged (15), (16) and (14) respectively, all reside at the Iju area of Lagos. They are being tried on a two-count charge of conspiracy and unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Rita Momah, told the court that the teenagers and three others, now at large, committed the offences on Oct. 5, in an uncompleted building. They saw her leaving Church and requested that she purchase drinks for them. 

They then offered her a bottle of assorted drink that was already spiked and lured the 13-year-old to the building, where the six of them took turns with her.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against them. The judge, Mr F.A Adeeyo, granted them bail in the sum of N300, 000 each, with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Dec. 7, for continuation of hearing.

According to The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Section 137 prescribes life imprisonment for anyone found guilty of child rape.

The senators rejected the recommendation of the Ethics and priviledge committee's which recommended that the Rotimi Amaechi should not be confirmed as Minister because of the corruption charges that he is yet to answer to at the appeal court.

China ends controversial one child policy...couples can now have 2

China have announced the end of its hugely controversial one-child policy today, with official state media confirming that all couples will now be allowed to have two children.

A communique was issued by the ruling Communist Party following a four-day meeting in Beijing to chart the country's plans for the next five years. Despite being the world's second largest economy after the US, there have been growing concerns over China's ageing population since the one child policy was introduced in 1980. 


The radical family planning policy was adopted to reduce the country's high birth rate. The policy restricted most couples to only a single offspring, and for years authorities argued that it was a key contributor to China's economic boom.

But after years of strict, sometimes brutal enforcement by a dedicated government commission, China's population - the world's largest - is now ageing rapidly, gender imbalances are severe, and its workforce is shrinking.
