Photos: Pres. Buhari visits Abuja bomb blast victims, pays bill of girl shot by armed robbers Posted: 04 Oct 2015 12:45 PM PDT President Buhari today paid a visit to the victims of the Abuja twin bomb blasts which happened on Friday night October 2nd. He visited the Trauma Centre of the National Hospital where he interacted with some of the victims. He wished them speedy recovery and reassured them that the Federal Government will take full responsibility for settling their medical bills. He directed his Chief of Staff, Mallam Abba Kyari to settle the N268,790.00 medical bill of a young girl in the Paediatric Ward of the hospital. The girl's mother, Deborah Stephen, had broken into tears on seeing President Buhari. She told him that her daughter had been shot by armed robbers who raided their home and that the family could not afford the medical bills. President Buhari was accompanied by his personal aides and Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State. |
"El-Rufai lied, we never spent billions on Independence Anniversary"- GEJ Posted: 04 Oct 2015 10:20 AM PDT In a statement issued on behalf of the former president on Sunday October 4, Abubakar Sulaiman, the immediate past minister/deputy chairman, National Planning Commission, branded the Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir el-rufai a 'liar' for alleging that his administration spent N64 billion on October 1 celebrations between 2010 and 2015. He added that Jonathan administration spent only N332.6 million for the celebration in 3 years - an average of N66m per year. The statement reads: "We were taken aback by the recent comment reportedly credited to His Excellency, Governor Nasir El-Rufai where he claimed that the immediate past President, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan's administration spent N64billion to cover the country independence anniversary spending in five years. The break down, according to the governor showed that N13billion was spent in 2011, N15billion in 2012 and N14billion in 2013 and N22billion allegedly spent in 2014. |

Photos: Woman who had skin cancer given new nose using flesh from her scalp Posted: 04 Oct 2015 12:34 PM PDT Bree Towner, 28, from Edwardsville, Illinois, was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma in 2015. She underwent a series of surgeries, including a drastic operation which shaved off the end of her nose. Towner was left with scars, which she claims left her on the brink of suicide. The trainee teacher has since conquered cancer and was given the all-clear by doctors in March after going under the knife three times and given almost 100 stitches. She now has a brand new nose, expertly crafted using the flesh from her scalp. Suspicious about her symptoms back in 2013, she alerted doctors after a strange spot appeared on her nose, which led to a scrape biopsy. Although tests for cancer initially came back negative, just seven months later the spot had ballooned in size. In January, she was handed the devastating news that she had infiltrative basal cell carcinoma. "The most difficult aspect is the damage done to my self-esteem. I had dealt with minor bouts of self-esteem issues, depression, and anxiety before my diagnosis from just the stress of life." Towner said. "But after surgery I was suicidal. I never attempted it, but the thoughts were there daily between February and July" "Throughout the process, while being in public, I've seen many people staring out of either rudeness or curiosity, which was a major part of the mental health issues."Ms Towner was handed the all-clear after the operation and she went under the knife again on April 9 to remove her overlying nose, dubbed her 'arch'. She still faces the threat that her 'nose flap' will reject her new nose as she undergoes further surgery to reduce the size of her nose as well as adjustments to placement of her eyebrows. Flood wash snakes into homes in Plateau Posted: 04 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT A recent flood in Pankshin/Kanke/Kannam Federal Constituency in Plateau state reportedly washed all manner of snakes particularly Black mamba and Vipers into the residences of that area in Plateau state. A member of the Federal House of representatives, Timothy Golu who represents the constituency, told NAN that the snakes were washed away from farmlands and into the homes of residence of the constituency .. "The floods have pushed snakes into my constituency. They move around openly and snake bites have become very common there. As the waters pushed them, some snakes climbed trees; others entered holes while some just held unto any straw . All of them later descended into residences and farms where they have been wreaking havoc," he said.According to him, the residents of the area who have suffered snake bites have not been able to receive medical attention because they can't afford the drugs prescribed by doctors at a snake clinic situated in Langtang Local government area "The drugs are very expensive and purchasing them had been dificult for the proprietor of the clinic because it was always difficult or outrightly impossible for the patients to pay," he said.He called on the state and Federal government to intervene in the crisis as many neighboring states are at risk of snake invasion. |

Diezani: 3 more ex-ministers risk arrest for graft, money laundering Posted: 04 Oct 2015 05:36 AM PDT Three more ministers of ex-president Jonathan are facing possible arrest following Diezani Alison-Madueke, arrest in London on Friday. A source in one of the anti-graft agencies told The Nation last night that Mrs. Alison-Madueke is "just one of the few cases of ex-ministers under investigation." "We have at least about three issues at hand but I will not disclose their names. Do not forget that these three cases are outside the matter of ex-Minister Stella Oduah which is stuck in court. We have made our position known on this. The depletion of the $1billion in Sovereign Wealth Fund by about $700m is one of the priority cases with anti-graft agencies. There are also the issues of reckless granting of tax waivers to oil firms."A source, who spoke in confidence, said: "Those in Jonathan's camp felt the ex-president's visit to President Buhari had created a window for mutual talks and negotiation on alleged graft findings by the new administration. They did not know that Buhari really meant business to retrieve looted funds. Actually, some ex-ministers, including Diezani, have already placed their counsel in Nigeria on standby in case of any invitation by anti-graft agencies. Their plan was that the matter would be settled in Nigerian court. But the arrest of the ex-Minister in London has added a new dimension to the anti-corruption agenda of the Buhari administration. "Those in Jonathan's camp were shocked by Diezani's arrest. They have been desperately trying to get in touch with the ex-Minister since yesterday without success. As at today (yesterday), they are worried that Diezani has cut off contact with everyone, creating fears that she might spill the beans. "The fear in Jonathan's camp is that Diezani might be given the James Ibori treatment. They are suspecting that she might be tried and convicted in the UK."A former presidential aide said: "None of us has been able to reach out to Diezani because all her lines are off. She has also not called to share her travails with anybody."How Diezani was nabbed It was gathered yesterday that the voluntary surrender to the National Crimes Agency (NCA) by a Nigerian oil baron laid the foundation for a comprehensive investigation, and arrest of Diezani. The said oil baron, according to sources, was allegedly fronting for the ex-Minister and may be holding some looted funds in trust for her. It was learnt that following surveillance and monitoring by security agencies, the oil baron confided in a former Head of State who encouraged him to open up to the NCA on all such slush accounts. "The oil magnate voluntarily surrendered to NCA because he knew the game was up. He was not having peace where he was staying in the UK. But the former Head of State assisted in cracking this financial crime." Mrs. Alison-Madueke and her alleged accomplices are expected to be arraigned in a London court tomorrow.Source: The Nation |
