Photos: Spring Valley High School students stage walkout in support of fired South Carolina Officer

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 11:25 AM PDT

Hundreds of students at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina, black and white, staged a walkout on Friday in support of school resource officer Ben Fields, the deputy who was fired after being caught on video flipping a student out of her desk.
Principal Jeff Temoney confronted students after they convened in the school's atrium and told them their voices were heard no one would be "suspended," but they needed to return to class.
"We've heard your voices, OK? We appreciate you taking time to do this, but again, as you know, we always focus on teaching and learning, so let's head on back to class," he said.

Spring Valley Principal Jeff Temoney said that the protest was "an orderly student-led activity."
"Our students and our staff were safe and are on campus," Temoney said.
Temoney said at around 10 a.m. about 100 students gathered in the school's atrium to express opinions about Fields' firing in relation to the video.
"I addressed the students to let them know that we understood their need to make their voices heard," Temoney said. "Then I reminded them that Spring Valley high is all about the business of teaching and learning, so it's time to go back to class."
Students then returned to class in an orderly fashion less than 10 minutes after the protest began, Temoney said.
Several videos of the walk out surfaced on Twitter shortly following the protest using "#bringbackfields" and "#bringfieldsback."

Some students were reportedly wearing T-shirts with "#BringBackFields" printed on them, others were heard shouting "Free Fields."
A student-recorded video of Fields aggressively arresting a female student quickly went viral, with many people claiming the officer used excessive force.
Fields, in a statement through his attorney, maintained that he took "justified and lawful" action during the incident.

Should Nigerian entertainers pay tax? By Etcetera

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 10:59 AM PDT

For the record, this article is not meant to give celebrities who don't pay their taxes a pass. I think we all should pay what we legally owe, including those whose work puts us on the big screen, the sports field or in the recording studio.

But I do have an understanding of the multitude of reasons celebrities give for not paying tax. And I think you should too.

The Nigerian tax system is totally messed up… yes, messed up in all ramifications. I concur with the argument that monies generated from taxes in Nigeria are not judiciously used by the government. Or we haven't seen what the money is being used for.

When singer and actress Lauryn Hill and other American artists pleaded guilty and even got incarcerated for tax evasion, a lot of you must have asked: "Why can't our celebrities pay taxes like their American counterparts?"

But the real question is, how many Nigerians pay tax? As you are reading this article, I can bet that you probably don't know where the LIRS or FIRS offices are in your local government.

So before you all jump on the government-must-tax-Nigerian-entertainers bandwagon, a few important points are worth noting.

Most Nigerian entertainers are evading tax, not because they intentionally want to, but because they don't know their taxable income. Likewise, the Nigerian government, through all its tax agencies, is losing billions of naira every year from the entertainment industry because they are yet to discover a proper structure for taxation of the industry.

I know it seems like a great thing to take home a million-naira plus pay cheque for singing a song, starring in a TV show or making a movie. And I'm sure the financial perks and other benefits of stardom aren't lost on celebrities. But think for a moment about what it must be like to get one or two big cheques a year (either lump sums, advances or royalties) and then have to manage that money wisely all year long, maybe not knowing when the next cheque will come in.

Most people in Nigeria are wage earners or businessmen and women who get regular cheques once a month or daily money from their businesses. Some employees in the oil sector might get paid twice a month. Overall, the average person who's working can count on a pretty steady pay cycle. But that's not the case with entertainers. Sure, they get their paydays – big ones, in fact. But when they get paid, it's like receiving a huge financial windfall. And we all know what happens with most windfalls. They blow the money. Despite all the bling and the perceived glamour that come with being a celeb, the truth is that it's tough being a celebrity and keeping your finances straight.

There's also the issue of financial oversight. Most naija celebs don't know what to do with their money when they get paid for gigs or appearances. Some have gone broke for trusting the wrong people to handle their money or to give them financial advice, that's why a lot of artists who once lived comfortably have pretty much kissed their riches goodbye.

Being a celebrity anywhere in the world means you're constantly in the spotlight. That additional scrutiny doesn't just come from the public or the media. Celebrities, with their "I'm-living-large" lifestyles and their out-sized pay cheques, are also prime targets of fraudsters.

In fact, if you're a public figure who is routinely taking home cheques in the six, seven and eight figures range, you have pretty much put a bull's eye on your back when it comes to the tax collectors. Simply put, the tax authorities in Nigeria know they cannot make an example out of celebrities for tax evasion. Nigerians generally don't believe in paying tax and coupled with corruption in the system, it is hard convincing a Nigerian to remit a chunk of his or her earnings as tax to a corrupt government.

So you cannot bash naija celebs for non-payment of tax without taking certain factors into consideration, because that would be a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Have you paid your tax? I can bet that even the tax collectors in Nigeria don't pay their tax. Saying that millions of Nigerians are enjoying some kind of financial Christmas – in the form of tax evasion – would be an understatement. So why should we expect celebrities to be any different simply because their cheques are bigger? It doesn't work that way. Their expenses are bigger too, in many cases way bigger than most people can imagine.

Also, unlike the average employee, celebrities don't have taxes automatically taken out of their pay cheques. The corruption in the Nigerian tax system has got so bad that even the workers having taxes automatically taken out of their pay cheques have cried out that their taxes are not being remitted as claimed by their employers. And the tax agencies are not doing enough to rectify the decay in the system. And someone is screaming that the government should start taxing entertainers?

Tell the average Nigerian that he or she has been mandated by the law to pay tax and you will have yourself a barrage of insults to deal with. Yes, it is that bad. If the government does a thorough manhunt for tax offenders, even you who are reading this article right now will perhaps get in trouble with the law.

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 02:16 AM PDT

A Kogalymavia passenger plane carrying 224 people has crashed in Egypt's Sinai penunsula. The airliner took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik this morning, and was heading for Russia, according to aviation sources, when it disappeared from radar. It's believed the plane was mainly carrying Russian tourists.

The plane was carrying 212 passengers and 7 crew members. 17 of the passengers are children.
Airbus A321 left Sharm-El-Sheikh for St. Petersburg with flight number 7K9268. It belongs to airline Metrojet and was 18.5 years old and was descending with about 6000 feet per minute just before signal was lost. The captain told ATC after departure of a technical fault and requested a route change.

Local media says a recovery team is now at the site of the crash.

Jaden Smith says 'being born was the most influential thing that has happened' to him

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 12:39 AM PDT

17-year-old Jaden Smith's (son to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith) went on yet another bizarre rant after being named for the second year in a row as one of Time's Most Influential Teens, Jaden said;
"Being born was the most influential thing that's ever happened to me. As far as people, what they think is influential, like I said, the thing that you can make the most of and laugh at the most is whatever would be the most influential to the pop culture of the world. When they don't understand something, they're afraid of it, and if they don't understand it, they don't accept it or like it." he said
He added:
"There's been so many things we don't understand like Galileo saying the Earth is not the center of the universe, it's actually the sun that we revolve around. Everybody thought that he was crazy! People don't understand the level of science that he was putting forth into society. You can't blame these people that don't understand."
"People didn't understand the level of science that he was putting forth into society. You can't blame these people that don't understand.'
This isn't the first time Jaden has compared himself to Galileo. Earlier this month, he said the same thing to GQ after revealing that it's "fun" to make people's heads spin.

John Fashanu reveals how he paid his late brother £75k to stop him from coming out as gay

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 12:14 AM PDT

Ex-England footballer, John Fashanu has revealed the extents he went to prevent his elder brother, Justin Fashanu from coming out as gay. He said he paid him £75K to keep quiet about it.

The former Wimbledon striker made the shock admission a week after it emerged two top footballers – including an England star – plan to come out. In his first in-depth interview about brother Justin since his tragic suicide in 1998, he said:
"I begged him, I threatened him, I did everything I could possibly do to try and stop him coming out. I gave him the money because I didn't want the embarrassment for me or my family. Had he come out now, it would be a different ball game. There wouldn't be an issue, but there was then. Things are different now. Now he'd be hailed a hero."

Justin Fashanu shot himself into the limelight with a stunning goal against Liverpool in 1980, Nottingham Forest subsequently shelled out a record £1million for him but he failed to hit the heights expected.

In a newspaper interview in 1990, he claimed to have had an affair with a married Tory MP he met in a gay bar. John, 53, said:
"I'll never forget when Justin first told me. He called me in the evening time and said to me: 'I'm gay'. Then he said to me: 'I'm planning to go to a newspaper'. I said to him: 'Oh heavens forbid... oh my God. We don't need that. You're mad'. He promised when I gave him the money he would not go out and say that. Two days later... bang... headlines in a newspaper. I looked like a sucker. For me and my family it was like Hiroshima or Nagasaki on our lives. It knocked us dead, it was a total shock.
"People might not like it, but I was trying to protect my family. You've got to remember the public's perception of homosexuality at that time was that it was an abomination . It was taboo. Street boys were beating up gays in nightclubs. I give him credit for having the courage to come out and say it. But it caused a lot of confusion and animosity towards him, me, and my family.
"During matches, 30, 40, sometimes 45,000 supporters sang at me: 'You're big... you're black... your a*** is up for grabs... Fashanu... Fashanu'. As a result of him saying what he said, my mother died because of the stress. She actually died a year later on the day of his birthday.
"She was already old, very fragile and suffering cancer. Then to be told her second eldest son was a homosexual was too much."
John condemned Justin, then at Leyton Orient, soon after he came out and infamously said he would "not want to play or even get changed" in the same dressing room.

But last week John said:
"I've never spoken about these things before because I was stamped a homophobe. But things have changed and I make it very clear: I was wrong. It was ignorance on my behalf. I didn't understand him. I was trying to protect my family and I was worried about the effect on my career. In the process I lost my brother and I am very sad about that.
"He committed suicide because he was so distraught the world would not accept a black man who was homosexual. I couldn't understand it and I couldn't accept it and so whatever relationship we had before was killed .
"Previous to that, we had been very close, but it just shattered everything. I didn't speak to him again. There's a lot of sadness and regrets."

Two premier league stars including an England international are about to come out as gay and Fashanu says :
"If these young men feel it is the right time to come out and announce they are homosexual, please don't anybody victimise them. Please be careful with words, don't let it lead to the destruction of two men in their prime. I didn't have that wisdom 20 years ago and it led to the destruction of my late brother Justin.
"We must accept them. I beg everybody not to make the same mistakes I made. Give them as much understanding as possible."
John is a practising christian and he believes his brother was not actually gay, he credits his TV presenter daughter, Amal, 27 for helping him change his attitude.
"My daughter Amal is a very strong activist for gay rights," said John, who now lives in Nigeria, where homosexuality is still illegal. She has helped me a lot to understand a lot more about another way of life, which homosexuality is. I love her and I am very proud of the way she speaks about her uncle."

Tekno, RNA thrills fans at Dream Alive with Pikolo Squad concert

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 11:58 PM PDT

The 3rd edition of Dream Alive With Pikolo was held on Saturday 0ctober 24th with a mind blowing concert tagged The Squad. The concert was the grand finale of the annual talent hunt show. All roads led to Hexagon a popular events and hang out spot in GRA, Benin city.

Music heavyweights like TEKNO, RNA and a host of others thrilled the crowd with their performance; the climax of the event was the announcement of the winners of this year's edition. Unlike other previous concerts that don't lived up to his billings due to failure of the much publicized artist not turning up, but the organizers of Dream alive with pikolo made sure the Benin fans had a feel of Tekno, Rna and other acts.
Having held rigorous auditions, all the contestants were looking out for the grand finale of the event. This is not only the high point of the project, but it is the night on which talented young acts got opportunity of having their names written in gold and bright lights. Several contestants participated at the hunt only three came out top in comedy, dance and music. The winners of the events were rewarded and organizers will also nurture their talents and empower them in their fields.

In a brief chat with HON. Daniel Eromosele a.k.a Pikolo he said
"In 2013 and 2014 respectively, we recorded significant success in all three categories of comedy, dance and music. That is, in part, the motivation we have to host the third edition of this event in 2015. Truth be told, the journey had never been easy, but the light we see in what we do has been a driving force for us. Personally, I persuaded that Dream ALIVE With Pikolo is way bigger than any one individual, including the convener. The vision is gigantic and the work is huge.
While DreamALIVE With Pikolo gets better with each year that passes, we are not ignorant of the demand it places on our resources: energy, money time, logistics, and manpower. This is what naturally informs the need for a pocket of collaborations that has made us succeed over the years. DreamALIVE With Pikol o is NOT a one-man show; it has been, in its entirety, the product of teamwork.
"I will not fail to express profound gratitude to the Governor of the State, Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole for his fatherly support and encouragement. The Governor made a platform available when he appointed me Senior Special Assistant on Arts and Culture. I am also deeply grateful to all the commissioners, past and serving, who thought it wise to throw in their support simply because they are convinced this noble initiative holds a tremendous promise, and has the capability to catapult talented young people into the spot light and give meaning to their endeavours".
The event was loaded with lots of fun, thrills, glitz and razzmatazz. The crowd had lots of adventure, glamour and excitement. In 2016, the fourth edition will be hosted and it promised to be better and bigger than this year's edition.

Arsonist of black Churches caught

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 12:00 AM PDT

Police have made an arrest in connection with a two-week string of church arsons, most of which occurred at places of worship in black neighborhoods, the Post-Dispatch reports.

Surprisingly, the suspect is a black man in his 30s, David Lopez Jackson according to a police source.
Investigators were expected to seek criminal charges against him yesterday.
The string of fires, many of which did minimal damage, drew attention of local and federal investigators. The locations drew speculation of whether it was a hate crime.
The Rev. Robert Gettinger, of St. Augustine Catholic Church, said news of an arrest is a relief.
"We pray for the person who has done this. It seems to be mentally off balance behavior," Gettinger said.

He said the church remains grateful that damage was isolated to the front doors, common in all the fires.

Survivors: Boko Haram killing and kidnapping in villages

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 11:21 PM PDT

Boko Haram survivors say Boko Haram extremists bombed out of forest camps are attacking remote northeast Nigerian villages, killing scores and kidnapping hundreds of women, children and young men.

Farmer Muhammad Ali says militants armed with guns and swords took away his wife and two daughters, aged 9 and 3, from Abbacheri village.

He is among 400 refugees who say the attacks started a week ago and they walked for six days to reach safety.

A police officer says at least four ailing and malnourished children have died among refugees in Jakana, a village 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Maiduguri city.

Nigeria's air force has been bombarding camps in Sambisa Forest as soldiers launched a ground offensive.

Couple who met online on an ESPN website get married

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 10:43 PM PDT

Kate Queram was also an avid commenter on ESPN's Big Ten blog. She didn't live in a basement, but they were both huge Michigan fans. Not to mention, they were both University of Michigan alums.
Despite the similarities, Kate and Brandon never knew each other before meeting in the comment section and becoming known as the "Blog Couple" to all the other commenters out there.

According to ESPN, Kate tells them that Brandon was the only one to not accuse her of being "a middle-aged man in a basement somewhere."
"If she was a middle-aged man, she was a middle-aged man who could make me laugh all the time," Brandon admits. "I figured I'd take my chances."

They talked online for about six months before Brandon hopped in his car and drove 12 hours from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Wilmington, North Carolina to see her. His friend, Tom Brady (not the football star), joked that Brandon drove all that way because he was "anxious to find out if she was indeed a middle-aged man" or not.

Kate opened her door to find Brandon visibly shaking on her doorstep from the nerves, but it was a "very cute" shaking as Kate describes it.
"Definitely worth it," he remembers.
Things moved very quickly for Brandon and Kate. After meeting in person for the first time, they made it a point to visit every three or four weeks over the summer. They both admit that they realized their relationship was the real deal very early on, which is why Brandon found a job in North Carolina that "was good for his career."
Although his brother, Ryan, will tell you that Brandon really took the job to be closer to Kate.
"It was love at first type," as Kate's friend describes it.
From there, the rest is, well, a win. On October 24, 2015, Kate and Brandon married. They carefully chose a date when Michigan's football team would have a bye week.

They call their love story the best there ever was, but what's really great about it is that Brandon and Kate "genuinely bring out the best in one another."

Six-year-old girl beats the odds after being born with her heart outside her chest

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 10:22 PM PDT

Virsaviya Borun, a native of Russia who moved to South Florida with her mother, suffered from a rare condition - called Pantalogy of Cantrell- that caused her heart and intestines to form outside of her body. Her heart is protected only by a thin layer of skin.

"When I was pregnant, the doctor said she will not survive, that she is going to die," Dari Borun, the girl's mother, said.
The remarkable girl defied the odds set against her and lives, for the most part, like any other girl.
"I like to draw Jesus, ponies and angels," Virsaviya said. "I don't go to the school and I don't go to the ballet but I want to do it at home."

Borun said she found a surgeon in Boston able to treat her daughter, but the cost prevents her from pursuing it.
"It's gonna be expensive for sure and I tried to work with social worker and she said we don't have opportunity to apply for insurance," she said.
An NBC 6 story on Borun and her inspiring little girl was shared millions of times following its intial airing, prompting many throughout their community to reach out and help.
An anonymous donor even reached out to the station and offered to cover the remainder of Virsaviya's fundraising goal.
"I don't have a family here. It's just me and Virsaviya, but now I feel like I have a family because a lot of people just caring about us. They love us. They want to help," Borun said.
Though funds are being raised to help the girl receive treatment, she is currently unable to undergo surgery.
"She can't get it because of her high blood pressure and pulmonary arteries. So if it goes down, if she will feel better, they're going to check her in two years," Borun explained.
At the moment, the mother is concerned with covering basic treatment as well as living expenses for herself and her daughter.

Despite the challenges, Virsaviya said it's the heart that keeps her and her mother going.
"My mom always told me that she loves my heart and I really like it," she said.

Cross River Govt suspend Perm. Secs. over suspension of morning devotion in schools

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 12:34 AM PDT

The Cross River State government has indefinitely suspended the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Education Anne Odey, who last week released a statement suspending all forms of morning devotion in schools across the country.
The State Security Adviser (SSA) to Governor Ben Ayade, Jude Ngaji who made this known to newsmen yesterday in Calabar, explained that indeed the state police commissioner, Henry Fadairo, had contacted the state ministry of Education about a possible attack by Boko haram members during early morning and afternoon devotions in various schools.

Ngaji said the permanent secretary unilaterally took the decision of suspending the age long practice of morning devotions in the state, without consulting the state governor.
"The governor has directed that the permanent secretary be suspended indefinitely while the ban on suspension of devotion has been lifted immediately. It is true that police got intelligence information that Boko Haram is planning to bomb schools during morning devotions and therefore directed authorities in the Ministry of Education to act fast.
But the permanent secretary did not bother to refer to the governor or call for stakeholders' meeting to that effect.
So, the governor feels pained that the permanent secretary got such sensitive information without seeking for his advice and went ahead to issue directive suspending morning devotions in schools," he said.
He added that the governor is a strong believer in God and will not do anything that will prevent people from worshiping God.
