Photo: 14-year-old girl missing, suspected to have fled with 40-year-old lover.

Posted: 01 Oct 2015 09:56 AM PDT

14-year-old Rosemary, who was on Monday, September 8, rescued by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (MWAPA) from the apartment of her alleged lover, Chukwu Nkenna, 40, at Obelle Junction, Surulere, Lagos, has reportedly gone missing again.

According to Punch, the teenager from Plateau State, came to Lagos in January 2014 and had since been in the care of a non-governmental organisation interested in girl education, before she left in December 2014, due to financial challenges.

The teenager was said to have met Nkenna in the Surulere around January 2015 and moved in with him. The Surulere Police Division had on Friday, August 21, arrested Nkenna after neighbours filed a report alleging he was sexually abusing the teenager. The matter has since been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation (SDCI), Yaba, on Monday, August 24.

Subsequently, the police at SDCI reportedly released Nkenna while the victim was asked to seek medical attention. Rosemary, afterwards, went back to continue living with her lover and the matter was said to have also been brought to the attention of MWAPA, which sent its officials to take the girl from the suspect's house on September 8.

The agency reportedly billed the 14-year-old to go to a government rehabilitation centre, but she opted to stay in the Agege area with her uncle. However, on September 13, Rosemary reportedly sneaked out of her uncle's apartment in Agege, and had since not been found Efforts to find Rosemary have proved abortive.

Following the search, Nkenna's apartment in Surulere was allegedly raided but she was not found. Nkenna was also said to have travelled out of Lagos State, and was unavailable for comment. Rosemary's uncle, who identified himself as Benjamin, said, "When Nkenna was initially arrested by the police and taken to SDCI, the police failed to follow up the matter. They released him, and said we should allow the girl to marry the man since they were both lovers. I was not happy with the way they treated that case. When they asked the two of them to go home, she returned to Nkenna's house until she was taken from the apartment by government officials.

Days later, she fled, and since that time, we have been looking for her. She called one of my brothers two days ago, but she did not tell us where she was staying. We assumed she was with the suspect. We do not have Nkenna's number. So, we cannot reach him." Benjamin added that Nkenna must have given his niece love potion and appealed to the the state government to rearrest him.

"There was a time that Nkenna called the family with Rosemary's number, and we asked him to show up, but he refused. We are still looking for her." An unnamed official of MWAPA in Alausa, confirmed that the ministry was handling the case, adding that the director of the Child Protection Unit was unavailable for comment.

"The case was reported to the unit by an NGO, and we are working on it. The director is not around to talk on it," the official said The Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) Joe Offor, said investigation was ongoing on the matter. He said the case was at the SDCI, and that they are investigating alleged rape.

"The police do not get involved in cases of relationships and marriages. If the girl is a minor, the police know she cannot give a valid consent. However, the girl's family should find out where their daughter is and let the police know so we can assist in recovering her. Offor said. "If the suspect is given an administrative bail, he will come back on the day he is asked to report. If he does not show up, then we know what to do" he added.

Albino children who were attacked for body parts set to return home from US

Posted: 01 Oct 2015 09:48 AM PDT

"Emmanuel can recount his ordeal in hesitant English but has a severe speech impediment. His attackers chopped off one arm and the fingers of the other and tried to pull out his tongue and teeth."

Shy, soft-spoken Mwigulu Magesa, missing an arm from a brutal attack in Tanzania where albinos are targeted for their body parts, wants to be president some day and knows exactly what he will do when he takes office.

If someone does such a thing like chopping a body part of a person with albinism or killing a person with albinism, he is sentenced to death the same day, the 12-year-old boy said in Swahili through an interpreter.
"By hanging them," he added in a stronger voice.

For now, Mwigulu's days are filled with more cheery thoughts as he and three other Tanzanian children wrap up a summer in New York being fitted with prosthetic limbs and learning the simple childhood joys of splashing in a pool and playing backyard soccer.

But in the next few days Mwigulu, along with Pendo Noni, 15, Emmanuel Rutema, 13, and 5-year-old Baraka Lusambo will return to Tanzania, where people with albinism live in danger.
Albino body parts are highly valued in witchcraft and can fetch a high price. Superstition leads many to believe albino children are ghosts who bring bad luck.

Some believe the limbs are more potent if the victims scream during amputation, according to a 2013 United Nations report.

Albinism is a congenital disorder affecting about one in 20,000 people worldwide who lack pigment in their skin, hair and eyes. It is more common in sub-Saharan Africa and affects about one Tanzanian in 1,400.

United Nations officials estimate about 75 albinos have been killed in the east African nation since 2000 and have voiced fears of rising attacks ahead of this year's election, as politicians seek good luck charms from witch doctors.

The government has banned witch doctors to stop the body parts trade but when these children go home, they face a future that can be bleak.

They may attend schools deemed "safe" but may live in one of a handful of government centers plagued by overcrowding, food shortages and little opportunity to work, said Ester Rwela, a social
worker with Under the Same Sun, a charity that advocates for people with albinism.
The Canada-based charity works to provide protection, support and education for people with albinism.

Rwela accompanied the children to New York, where they have been cared for by Elissa Montanti, founder of the Global Medical Relief Fund which aids children injured in disaster or conflict.
The Fund has helped nearly 200 severely injured children and, while she has bid sad farewells to them all, the little ones from Tanzania have really touched her, she said.

"War is one thing, stepping on a land mine is one thing," Montanti said. "But this is so deliberate. It is one human to another, causing such incredible pain that I can't comprehend it."
The children have been shielded as much as possible from harsh truths, spared news of other attacks and the disadvantages and discrimination that lie ahead, Montanti said.

Baraka, for one, does not know his father is accused of involvement in his attack six months ago and is under arrest in Tanzania.

Many attacks on albino children involve parents or close relatives, Rwela said.

Emmanuel can recount his ordeal in hesitant English but has a severe speech impediment. His attackers chopped off one arm and the fingers of the other and tried to pull out his tongue and teeth.
He stutters as he describes the attack by strangers wielding machetes and a hammer as he played outside. He spent five months recovering in a local hospital.

Courtesy of the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital for Children, he has been fitted with a hook for one arm and a toe was grafted on his other arm to help form a grip.

Like many with albinism, Emmanuel has poor vision. He holds books and papers inches from his face as he reads and helps Baraka practice writing his name in block letters.

Montanti said she made sure their time in America was filled with good memories as the children, sensitive to light, donned sunglasses, hats and plenty of sunscreen to play in the sun.

Mwigulu piped up that his favorite pastime was swimming, and Baraka lost his first baby tooth.
Emmanuel, blushing as the others giggled, said he liked seeing the topless women in Times Square who pose for pictures and solicit tips.
"They've had a wonderful summer," Montanti said. "It's safe, with a lot of love, activities and a lot of laughing."

Photos: Groom dies, bride injured on their honeymoon three days after their wedding

Posted: 01 Oct 2015 08:55 AM PDT

Jeremiah Grunblattman was honeymooning with his wife, Keturah on Long Island when he was killed on Wednesday, September 30, just three days after their wedding. According to the police, their SUV veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a bus. Keturah was badly injured.

Suffolk County police said the newlywed who got married on Sunday, September 27, were traveling west along Main Road in Greenport when their vehicle swerved into the path of a Suffolk County Transit bus shortly before noon Wednesday.

They had been updating friends about their honeymoon with pictures posted on social media. "They were just the perfect couple," Keturah's mother, Catherine Stickann, said in a telephone interview. "That's all I can tell you."

An unopened wedding present sat outside the couple's Clinton Hill home, where neighbors were just finding out about the tragedy. The cause of the accident is still undetermined. According to their registry, the couple met in 2011.

Keturah Grünblatt is an opera director and choreographer, while her husband was a craftsman.
