Man jailed for forwarding text message containing a joke about Pres. Mugabe to neighbours

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 12:59 PM PDT

A 38-year-old Zimbabwean man named Titus Maposa has been jailed for forwarding a joke on Mugabe to all his neighbours. According to Manica Post newspaper, Maposa's neighbours sent the text message to the police and he was arrested.

The offending joke was a message falsely attributed to Ecocash, Zimbabwe's mobile money transfer scheme, which said the president had deposited $1 500 (R20 745) into their account.

The newspaper said the message read:
"Ecocash Transfer Confirmation: 1,500 US from Robert Gabriel Mugabe. Thank you for supporting ZANU-PF."

Maposa was being charged under a section of Zimbabwe's Postal and Telecommunications Act prohibiting the sending of messages the sender "knows to be false."

The report said Maposa insisted he did not mean to make his neighbours "anxious or nervous".
"I was intending to share a social media joke," he said.

Although Maposa was not being prosecuted under Zimbabwe's infamous anti-insult laws, it remains a crime to insult Mugabe, who has been in power since 1980. Arrests are frequently reported under these laws, often for comments made on social media site.

Father of 11 children on £27k a year benefits refuses to work, says he is obeying God's first command to 'go forth and multiply'

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 09:17 AM PDT

A father of 11 who claims up to £27,000 a year in benefits says he does not believe in contraception - and admits the government pay for the upkeep of his children. Mohammed Salim and his wife Noreen claim up to £27,000 per year in handouts from the government and alarmingly hasn't worked for the past 10 years.

Their family of 13 live in a 4-bedroom house in Manchester & often travel by minibus. Mohammed, who is appearing on a new TV programme, said on the show that he has no regrets about fathering 11 children, even though "it is the government who pay for their upkeep, food and clothing".

"Having 11 children I don't think is irresponsible, we don't believe in contraception, we are following God's first command, he said 'go forth and multiply',"

Mohammed said it isn't his fault that he has spent 10 years on the dole and the system is failing him, adding:

"I have got qualifications and real work experience. I've been forced on to the dole because I'm unemployed. I am expected to do at least seven job applications a week. I'm better off on the dole than working on a minimum wage."  he told Channel 5's On Benefits: 26 Kids And Claiming, a documentary about large families on benefits.

Mohammed has applied to work as an ICT teacher in Saudi Arabia because he can't find a job in the UK.

He said: "It's a sad state of affairs. For the last ten years I've failed to get any jobs or interviews. I am not getting the results."

"I have been told to do taxi work but with the hours I would have to put in to get a reasonable wage, I can't do it, especially with young children."

Mohammed, who spends up to £300 per week on food for his family, said he would struggle if his welfare bill was capped at £500 a week as the government are currently proposing and he also forks out on modern gadgets for his children who want iPhones.

He said: "We are feeding 13 people. £500 a week is not enough, the costs are there, we are having to stretch and stretch. They want that because it is the thing of the present day and you have to cough up," he said.

He added that with 11 children, there are so many birthdays and religious festivals to remember and celebrate.

"Virtually every month there is something going on, if it is not a birthday it is some kind of celebration, Christmas, Easter, Eid," he said. "It is a big pull on the little amount of benefits that we do get."

Mohammed,a religious man believes that there are more important things than money.

"I am the richest man in the world with these children," he said. "I have a big family, I am on benefits, there is a worry there but god always sees us through

Those agitating for Biafra nation are miscreants & should be ignored - Obasanjo

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 09:09 AM PDT

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described those agitating for the creation of Biafra state as miscreants. Obasanjo said this in an interview with Sahara reporters
"This is a fake agitation. You people make a mountain out of a molehill. These are boys who want to take people unaware and get money out of them in the name of Biafra. These are the people you should ignore, I don't talk about Biafra. (Philip) Effiong came and said Biafra ceased to exist and since that day, Biafra has ceased to exist. We absorbed those we should absorb both into the civil service and into the military.
Even those we didn't absorb, who we initially regarded as being retired without benefits, later on we even gave them their benefits. Abandoned houses were returned. Within 10 years of the end of our Civil War, an Igbo man became the vice-president of our country. It took the Americans 100 years before they got to that point. So, what are you talking about? They have held all the ministerial positions existing in this country. We have Igbo as the Governor of Central Bank, Igbo has headed many parastatals in this country. That's why these miscreants should be ignored. They want to get money and they go round and say, 'We are still being victimised. We are still being treated badly in Nigeria,' so that they can take money from people."he said

Oprah addresses 'Secret Son' report...

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 08:56 AM PDT

This week , Oprah Winfrey was "ambushed" by her "secret son" after a taping of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the former talk show host revealed how she met Calvin Mitchell (as a little boy right) in the early 90's while she was filming the TV movie There Are No Children Here.

According to her, She was taken by the boy after he offered her a diet coke and wanted to help when she found out he and his family were stuck in the projects.

She enrolled Mitchell in a local private school and moved the family to a better home. But hope turned to disappointment when the school principal informed her that the boy had been missing classes. The family's excuse was that they couldn't get up on time to get the boy to school.

She discovered that his family didn't have any clocks in the house. Her Partner Stedman and herself went to K-Mart that moment, got a bag full of clocks, came back to the house, taught them how to set the alarm and all that. That however didn't prevent Mitchell from getting expelled from the school.

"I had a long conversation with him about how disappointed I was but I was going to give him another chance. I found a school in Mississippi that was a private boarding school because I thought if I could remove him from the environment that he'd been accustomed to growing up in, that maybe that would be helpful to him."

However, the boy again voiced discontent with the school and she had her last conversation with him in the early nineties.

That was until Winfrey got wind that the young man had sold his story to a tabloid years after
"When I realized the whole thing was a setup, I was no longer interested in speaking to him."

Although Winfrey says she wasn't hurt by the experience, she did admit she was left disappointed by the boy again, but counts it as a learning experience.

"I learned from that experience, if you really want to change somebody's life, you gotta be able to spend enough time with them to change the way they think about what their life can be. It isn't enough to give a person a new life or money or a new car, you have to teach them how to fish themselves."

Fight against corruption: I have never lost sleep over comments that I am being selective- Buhari

Posted: 30 Oct 2015 08:48 AM PDT

President Buhari says he never lost sleep over comments by some people accusing him of being selective in his fight against corruption. The President said this while fielding questions from pressmen in India where he is attending the 3rd Summit of the India-Africa Forum
"I cannot tell you by heart how much we have recovered. For those who are saying I am being selective, if they were not involved in corruption, they wouldn't mind. They will even encourage us to get whoever has compromised his position in the trust giving to him.
So I see it in the papers, I watch it on the screen, but I have never lost a sleep on it because those that are not corrupt should only encourage us to even do more. For those that are interested in the safety of those that have abuse trust in the country will go to any length including bribing people to give false information. I am not being selective. Whoever is caught, the documents that incriminates him or her will be taken to the courts to prosecute him for Nigerians to know who abused trust"he said
Asked if there will be an extension in time limit if the military fails to destroy Boko Haram by December this year, he said
"The main objective is to get rid of boko haram. Whether it is within the time limit we give to the military or outside it, we will maintain and focus on our objective. We will support them. Normally I am an optimistic person. Those that have already given up, I am sorry for them but I remain confident that our military and other law enforcement agencies are more than equal to Boko haram"he said
Reacting to the row about Amaechi's confirmation in the senate, he said
"This is a team work.  I say I know people but there are people I accept from other people in our team that I trust without even knowing them. Maybe the ones that had problems in the national assembly, I doubt if I ever met them in my life. I didn't walk into the presidency alone. I have to depend on all the three tiers of government, from all parts of the country. We cannot walk outside the constitution which says that there must be a cabinet representative from each state.  There used to be 42 ministers. I I think we will be lucky if we can have half of that  now because we cannot afford it. Others may not be substantive ministers but they will sit in the cabinet because that is what the constitution says and we cannot operate outside the constitution".
On whether he will be reducing the number of ministries, he said  "Of course"

On what he will want to be remembered for, Buhari said "If we survive it, I want to be remembered that Nigerians found out that I was genuine, I was a real patriot . Not only that I fought the civil war, I also fought corruption to a standstill" he said

The former German rapper who joined ISIS in 2012 and had publicly threatened President Obama has been killed in an airstrike, the Pentagon confirmed on Friday, October 30.

Denis Cuspert, who went by his hip-hop name "Deso Dogg," died in an Oct. 16 attack near Raqqa, Syria, according to Department of Defense spokeswoman Elissa Smith.

"Cuspert was a foreign terrorist fighter and operative for ISIL who used social media to take advantage of disaffected youth and potential Western recruits," she said in a statement.
"He publicly threatened the president of the United States and German citizens. He also encouraged Western Muslims to conduct attacks." she added.

The Berlin-born rapper was labeled a "specially designated global terrorist" in February, according to the State Department.

Cuspert has appeared in several propaganda videos for the militant group, including one where he appeared to be holding a man's severed head. He went by the name Abu Talha al-Almani after ditching his musical roots to join the terrorist group.

"His death contributes to our efforts to stop foreign fighter recruitment," Smith said.
