Popular Hausa musician, Ado Daukaka, arrested after he was released by abductors Posted: 01 Jul 2016 01:43 PM PDT Barely a day after popular Hausa musician, Ado Daukaka was released by his abductors, he was arrested by Adamawa police, Premium Times reports. The police said Daukaka was invited to give details concerning his abduction but family sources said the singer was arrested following a complaint made by the lawmaker representing Yola North in the state House of Assembly, Suleiman Alkali, who claimed that the musician ridiculed him in a song which condemned the level of corruption and inefficiency in the state. Daukaka was later granted bail on the condition that he reports back on Monday. The chairman of the Adamawa Concern Citizen a pressure group, Hussaini Bello, who condemned the arrest, said: "The way and manner things are happening will not augur well for the state. They just want to intimidate those that are criticising the charade playing out in the state. We had earlier condemned the abduction of this famous singer, not to talk of the unjust arrest as we will not relent in investigating the matter and whoever that has hand in it must be exposed. In our society singers use their God-given talents to capture the mood of the society, the songs sometimes don't go down well with those in power except if the singer praises them," he said. The state police spokesman, Othman Abubakar, said the singer was only invited to clarify issues regarding his abduction. "You know, he was weak when he was found and brought to the state police headquarters so we feel he should be allowed to go to his family. Well, if there was complaint against him by the lawmaker that's is a different matter entirely," said Mr. Abubakar.Daukaka's arrest was confirmed by the lawmaker who lodged a complaint against him. "Yes, it's true that he was detained at the police headquarters following the complaint I lodged," he said. "I lodged complaint against him, this is because they were peddling rumour that I have hand in his abduction. Firstly, I want him to explain to the police whether he was actually abducted or he ran and hid somewhere. Secondly, there was defamation of character against me in the song he composed that I built a brothel and was chasing women. So, because he pretend to the police that he was sick and that's why he was released on bail," said the lawmaker.Source: Premium Times |
Woman blocked from Facebook because her name is ISIS Posted: 01 Jul 2016 01:37 PM PDT 27 year old Isis Thomas, from Bristol,UK was blocked from logging into her facebook account because of her first name. On Monday, Isis tried to log into her profile only to find Facebook asking her to change her name. In an interview she said: "I just tried to log in and when I did, the password went through and this box came up asking me something about changing my name. I was on Facebook as Isis Worcester, because when I first signed up years ago I didn't use my real name, which is Isis Thomas, because of where I worked at the time. I thought it was about the surname, so I just changed it to Isis Thomas. But that didn't work and I realised they had a problem with me being called Isis. "They sent a message saying Isis wasn't allowed, it didn't comply with the policy. They asked me to send in proof of identity, which I did. That was on Monday and I haven't been let on the site since. "I checked out other times this has happened, and found a woman called Isis who had to start a Twitter campaign because Facebook made her send in ID three times before they finally let her back on."Isis's mum Sian named her after the ancient Egyptian goddess, worshipped as the ideal mother and wife, and the patron of nature and magic. For most of her life, people commented on Isis's pretty and unusual name, but things changed upon the rise of the terrorists declaring themselves the Islamic State – commonly abbreviated as ISIS. Isis continued : "Things have definitely changed for me and my name. I used to work in a doctors' surgery and had my name on a badge. People would comment on it a lot, try to make jokes or tell me it was unfortunate. Some would think it was some kind of company name. "It frustrates me that people still use 'Isis', especially when I see newspaper reports and they've written it 'Isis' instead of at least using capitals, like ISIS, because it's an acronym. I have no plans to change my name, though, I love it. I just want Facebook to realise it's my real name."Isis's mum Sian is furious at Facebook, and said: "It's as though she has never existed. I have found Facebook impossible to contact and I'm furious.Facebook recently launched a crackdown on ISIS extremists using it for propaganda Source: TheSunUK |

Posted: 01 Jul 2016 12:47 PM PDT Several foreigners are said to be among a number of hostages taken by gunmen who attacked a restaurant in the diplomatic quarter of the Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka today. Eight or nine attackers were said to have stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery, located in the city's diplomatic quarter. One kitchen staffer said that the gunmen were armed with firearms and bombs, entering the bakery at around 9:20pm local time and taking customers and staff hostage at gunpoint. Bangladesh's police chief has confirmed that several foreigners are among the hostages. One policeman is reported to have been killed and others wounded by gunfire as officers surrounded the restaurant, located in the Gulshan area of the capital, and a massive firefight erupted. Police spokesman said: "Our first priority is to save the lives of the people trapped inside." The police chief has said that they plan to start a rescue operation shortly. Bangladesh's Daily Star is reporting that heavily armed police in armoured vehicles are preparing to enter the restaurant. Lori Ann Walsh Imdad, who lives nearby, is reported to have said: "Terrorists broke in and shot the Italian baker and his wife and took about 20 foreigners hostage." The US State Department has said the hostage situation is "still fluid", and the US embassy in Dhaka has urged citizens to shelter in place. A spokesman for the US State Department said it was too early to say who was involved in the hostage situation, but that all Americans working at the US mission in Dhaka had been accounted for. One Bangladeshi TV station has reported that the gunmen chanted "Allahu Akbar" as they launched their assault. |

Woman claimed she was assaulted by nightclub bouncer but that's not what happened (photo/video) Posted: 01 Jul 2016 11:25 AM PDT CCTV footage has exposed what really happened after a 20 year old woman in Manchester reported to police officers that she had been assaulted by a club bouncer so as to put the bouncer in trouble. The woman had wanted to take a table outside into the smoking area in the early hours of Saturday morning when the bouncer took her arm and guided her back inside. The woman started arguing with the bouncer and after the bouncer refused to give in, she asked her friend to punch her in the arm and then reported to the police that she had been assaulted by the bouncer. The police on seeing her body evidence then watched cctv footage and were shocked at the findings. City centre inspector Phil Spurgeon said: "Officers were approached by a 20-year-old woman on Deansgate Locks in the early hours of Saturday 25 June. She showed officers some redness and swelling to her upper arm, which she claimed had been caused by a door supervisor from a nearby bar." "Officers took details of the woman and door supervisor and made arrangements to view CCTV the following evening," he continued. "The female then attended the Town Hall police station on Wednesday and insisted that she had been assaulted. She was then shown the CCTV and issued a fixed penalty notice for wasting police time "The decision to issue a fixed penalty notice rather than prosecute, reflected the limited time that officers spent on the investigation. Officers also took the door supervisors' views into account." Police have charged her £90 for wasting their time. |

Posted: 01 Jul 2016 09:28 AM PDT Miami Police have arrested a man Luis Hernandez-Gonzalez, 44, and his sister, Salma Hernandez after finding a record-setting $24 million in cash during a raid on their Miami home. According to Miami Herald who reported the news, police alleged that Hernandez trafficked marijuana out of his business shop located on the 7200 block of Northwest 54th Street and that he had ties to drug dealers trafficking marijuana in Tennessee. Miami police found rolls of mostly $100 bills neatly packed inside 24 orange Home Depot buckets hidden in a secret compartment in the attic. The attic was on the 2nd floor, down a hallway near the bedrooms of Hernandez-Gonzalez's 2 children. The money room could only be accessed through the attic. Police also found a Tec-9 pistol and bags of cash, each labeled $150K. He's been granted a $4m bail. "For a man with $20 million in his walls, an elevated bond is clearly necessary," said Miami-Dade prosecutor Adam Korn at Hernandez-Gonzalez's bond hearing on Wednesday. Investigators worked through the night counting the $24 million in cash. The haul is believed to be the largest single cash seizure in Miami-Dade police history. The police will move to take ownership of the cash through the government's asset forfeiture laws and will also seize the home. "The amount of the currency seized represents one of the largest money seizures ever in this jurisdiction," said Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. |

Posted: 01 Jul 2016 09:08 AM PDT The Federal Government today signed a contract agreement with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) on the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Railway project. The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi who signed on behalf of the Federal Government, said the contract is an addendum to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Railway project which was initially awarded by the former President Goodluck Jonathan's Administration to CCECC at a contract sum of $11.917 billion disclosing that at the inception of President Buhari Administration, the Federal Government renegotiated the contract with the Management of CCECC and agreed at a contract sum of $11.117 billion thereby saving a whooping sum of $800million. Amaechi reiterated that the Federal Government has completed the signing of the same contract with a different contract sum in order to legalize the new deal. "What we have done today is signing same contract but different contract sum to make it legal", he said. He said part of the contract agreement with CCECC is to expedite action and conclude arrangement with the China-Exim Bank to facilitate the commencement of work on the Railway project noting that his desire and expectation is the completion of the project in two years. On the funding of the project, the Minister assured that funding would not pose any hindrance to the smooth commencement and final completion of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Railway project. "President Muhammadu Buhari has assured me that he is committed to the development of the Railway Sector in Nigeria and would not leave any 'stone unturned' to achieving that dream", he said. Explaining further, Amaechi said his Ministry's determination is to conclude the 1st and 2nd segments of the projects which run through Calabar-Uyo-Aba-Port Harcourt-Yenogua-Otuoke-Ughelli-Warri-Sapele-Benin-Ore-Ijebu-Ode-Lagos with a target of covering all the Seaports along those Routes in good time. |
