Posted: 14 Jul 2016 01:15 PM PDT As Nigerians continue to condemn the verbal attack Dino Melaye launched on his colleague, Senator Remi Tinubu during the senate's plenary yesterday July 13th, a women based group, the Women Advocacy Research and Development Centre (WARDC) has given him three days to apologise to Mrs Tinubu or they will picket the National Assembly. The group made the threat in a statement released today and signed by its Coordinator, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi. Read the statement below: "Failure of Senator Dino Melaye to take this appropriate step will lead to OCCUPY NATIONAL ASSEMBLY by well meaning Nigerians"the statement read The women group condemned the seeming silence of the senate to Dino's verbal attack on a woman. "Verbal abuse, assault and battery of women is becoming a pattern in our democratic dispensation and it is a reflection of the numerous abuses that women face on a daily basis in the society According to National Demographic and Health Survey Report (2013), 28 percent of women age 15-49 have experienced physical violence at least once and 7 percent have experienced sexual violence in Nigeria and it is believed these figures are not representative of the magnitude of the problem. Between 2003 till date, notable women lawmakers have experienced physical and verbal abuse from men who are supposed to protect their rights. Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, was slapped by another Lawmaker at the National Assembly while another female lawmaker from Edo state was battered by an aide to an Immigration Oficer at the Assembly Complex earlier this year. Honourable Funmi Tejuoso was also physically assaulted at the Lagos State House of Assembly sometimes ago then this gender insecurity against Senator Oluremi Tinubu. Unfortunately, despite the public outcry against the security threat to Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the senate and the APC have not yet responded to the matter. The silence on the matter by the Senate and other members of the National Assembly vividly explains a tacit support from the hallowed Chamber on violence against women"the statement read. |
Ubi Franklin clarifies controversy about Iyanya's exit from his record label Posted: 14 Jul 2016 11:11 AM PDT So after Iyanya announced that he was going to start his own record label, rumours were rife that he had a fight with Ubi Franklin and his wife Lillian Esoro. Early this morning, Iyanya denied any fight with either of them, adding that he loved the couple. Then Ubi Franklin took to his IG page to clarify the whole situation. He posted the photo above and wrote: Recently there's been a lot said in the media about Iyanya leaving Made Men Music, I'd like to clarify things.Iyanya had approached me about a year ago and notified me of his intentions to start up a label. He wanted my blessings to do so and I told him it was a welcome development. I assured him of my support to help structure his planned label with the existing company (Made Men Music Group) whenever he was ready and the process was initiated. Two weeks ago he shared with me, news that the company had been duly registered and was ready to commence operations. I was also privy to the information that he had identified a few artistes with potential he wants to nurture. This done, I knew the label was ready to kick off. I understand his post piqued the curiosity fthe public and blogs made what they could of the news. Yes, Iyanya is starting a new label which will be a company out of Made Men Music with a different structure and a different focus, aiming at growing our industry. I would like to state here that like every other label we all have our internal issues from time to time. We have shared happy and sad moments and it's only fair to grow each other in every way possible. Not every move means a breakup. As you know we still stand this way. Cameroon reopens Far North Nigeria border as Boko Haram retreats Posted: 14 Jul 2016 09:42 AM PDT Bisong Etahoben, an investigative journalist in Cameroon, confirmed this recent development. According to Amnesty International, Cameroon closed the border after at least 200 attacks by Boko Haram killed hundreds of people. However, the government has officially reopened the Far North border as the war against Boko Haram is considered 'partially' won. "At this stage in the crisis, we are confident to declare that the insecurity caused by Boko Haram is firmly under control. The efforts of defense and security forces, as well as the remarkable contributions by self-defense groups, have paid off enough to permit the reopening of the closed markets and the land border with Nigeria. Schools will also resume teaching when the new academic year starts in September" said a Govt spokesperson. |

APC reacts to Dino Melaye's threat to Oluremi Tinubu, says he needs psychiatric examination Posted: 14 Jul 2016 09:26 AM PDT APC in Lagos state have released a statement condemning the recent threat by Dino Melaye on Senator Oluremi Tinubu. In the statement which was signed by its publicity sectary, Joe Igbokwe and released today July 14th, the party said they take his threat comments as a slip of tongue but if it is indeed true that this statement came from the heart of Dino Melaye, they would need a psychiatric doctor to examine the state of his mind. Read the statement below. Our attention has been drawn to a reckless and unguided statement credited to one Senator Dino Melaye from Kogi State who said he will beat up our own distinguished Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos Central and that nothing will happen. We take it that this is a slip of tongue but if it is indeed true that this statement came from the heart of Dino Melaye, we need a psychiatric doctor to examine the state of his mind. Senator Dino Melaye has been in the news in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the wrong reasons. His actions and deeds in recent times have contributed in no uncertain terms to various setbacks we have witnessed in the 8th Senate since its inception on June 9 2015. The hallowed chamber of the Senate of the federal republic of Nigeria is a prestigious place for the serious-minded, cerebral men and women, men and women of honour and integrity, those who can hold their heads when others are losing theirs, experienced but humble men and women. It is not for lunatics, rascals, street urchins, ethically challenged bigots or integrity challenged charlatans. It seems to us in Lagos APC that Senator Dino Melaye has reached a point of diminishing returns. The unstable and funny man from Kogi State has reached a point where there is no other place to go but to go down irretrievably. He can only go down with his likes and not with our own Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the highly revered, honoured and distinguished wife of our National leader, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Lagos APC wants Dino Melaye to move quickly to apologize to Senator Oluremi Tinubu and her beloved husband Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and have the statement credited to him withdrawn without any further delay. Photos: ISIS announces killing of its 'minister of war' Abu Omar al-Shishani in Mosul, Iraq Posted: 14 Jul 2016 09:23 AM PDT A news agency linked to the Islamic State, Amaq, claimed that its elite military commander Abu Omar al-Shishani, has been killed. The 30-year-old better known as Omar the Chechen, reportedly died in combat near the Iraqi city of Shirqat, 100km from the ISIS stronghold of Mosul. The Pentagon is verifying whether al-Shishani died in a US drone strike carried out earlier this month, officials told CNN. Washington previously boasted that it took out al-Shishani, who has a $5 million bounty on his head, in Syria in March, only to backtrack when Islamic State said he survived his injuries. Al-Shishani was born into a mixed Georgian-Chechen family, and served in a spec ops unit in the Georgian army, before volunteering to join Islamic State three years ago. He was reportedly consulted by ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on key military movements, as the Islamist group expanded its reach, earning the the title 'minister of war.' Source: RT/CNN |
Imo State Govt reacts to the protest by Owerri women over the relocation of Ekeukwu market Posted: 14 Jul 2016 09:15 AM PDT The Imo State Government has described the protest by some Owerri women over the relocation of Ekeukwu market, as 'highly regrettable'. A statement issued by the Sam Onwuemeodo, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Rochas Okorocha said the traders themselves should be happy about this development as they are not doing themselves any good if they do not see the wisdom in what the government is doing with regard to the relocation of the market to a more convenient place. The full statement below: "It is highly regrettable that a group of women could be deceived into carrying out a protest that could rightly described as uncalled for, over the State government's good intention to relocate Ekeukwu market to a better place. It is equally on record that successive governments in the State had also tried to move the market out of its current location to a more convenient place, but such previous efforts had also been frustrated by this kind of protest. It therefore requires a Political Will on the part of any government to ensure the relocation of the market to a more ideal place. It is this Political Will that Governor Rochas Okorocha is exercising at the moment with regard to the relocation of Ekeukwu market. The truth is that there is no other acceptable reason any Patriotic Citizen of the State could oppose the relocation of the market except on ground of selfish interest. In all considerations, the relocation of the Ekeukwu market is long overdue, all things being equal. With the rapid growth of Owerri into a model City, it is no longer feasible to allow the Ekeukwu to remain where it is at the moment. It is a known fact that Douglas Road cannot be recovered from its deplorable condition with the Ekeukwu market allowed to remain in its current location. Granted too that those who built the market at that place meant well, but they must have done so in consideration of the prevailing scenario at that time. But time brings a lot of changes. At the moment, nobody would have even thought about locating the market where it is now. The best action at present is to move the market, which the government has done. The traders themselves should be happy about this development. They are not doing themselves any good if they do not see the wisdom in what the government is doing with regard to the relocation of the market to a more convenient place. And the traders should only pray that the new place should attract to them a lot of new things. The governor's appeal on the part of all and sundry in the State on the issues of relocation and expansion of roads remains valid. Whatever the governor is doing now is for the good of the State and her people. And if those before Governor Okorocha had exercised the kind of passion he is now displaying in working for Imo people the story today would have been different and indeed in the positive. All in all, history and posterity give the best judgement. And at the end of the day they will obviously return favourable verdict to Owelle Okorocha over his actions as the governor of the State because he means well." |

Posted: 14 Jul 2016 08:58 AM PDT Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, nabbed, Benjamin Michael, 27, for attempting to remove a Mercedes Benz A-Class with the registration number UB 202 AAA from the park at a popular night club (name withheld) in Ikeja. The suspect, who hails from Ughelli in Delta State, was arrested after the Policemen prevented the angry mob from carrying out jungle justice on him when they sighted him entering the car. The suspect, who had sustained various degrees of injuries on his head before the arrival of RRS operatives, was taken to the hospital for medical attention by the police. Upon his arrival at the RRS' headquarters, he confessed that his plan was to steal the vehicle and take it out of Lagos to a neighbouring country to sell. "I took a wrap of Indian-hemp before I went to the club that night. On getting to the club, I was looking for a car whose door was not locked. Then, I started opening all the vehicles parked at the club's parking space one after the other. I discovered that the car in question was not locked, which gave me free entry into it. I entered the car quietly with the aim of removing it from where it was parked and take it out for sale," he disclosed. The suspected criminal said that he was unaware that some people were seeing him while entering the vehicle. He added: As I entered the car, I saw a group of men coming towards me. I still pretended as if the car was mine. When they got to my side, they asked me if the car was mine. Unknowingly to me, the owner of the car was with them. I confidently told them the car belonged to me. They dragged me out of the vehicle and started beating me. If not for the timely intervention of the RRS officers, they would have killed me that night".It was gathered that the Policemen who were on their routine patrol along the axis, rescued the suspect when he was about to be set ablaze by the enraged youth. While confirming the arrest, the spokesperson of Lagos State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, SP Dolapo Badmus, said that efforts were in progress to arrest to arrest his colleagues. "The suspect would be charged to court upon completion of our investigations. My advice to every vehicle owner is to ensure that your vehicles are parked in a secured place and properly locked to prevent car thieves from taking undue advantage of such negligence," she added. Nigeria drop to 70th while Portugal,France,Wales & Iceland climb up in new FIFA Rankings Posted: 14 Jul 2016 08:30 AM PDT Republic of Benin, Togo, Guinea, Uganda, Mali, Saudi Arabia and many other countries once considered as 'small countries' in football are now ahead of Nigeria in the July FIFA/ Coca Cola World Ranking released on Thursday morning. Nigeria moved down nine places to place 70 on the table, while Algeria is ranked first in Africa with Cote D'ivoire in second while Ghana third in Africa. The huge drop in ranking for Nigeria, the once powerhouse of African football was not totally unexpected given the fact that the country failed to qualify for the All African Cup of Nations scheduled to hold next year. Portugal meanwhile have leap frogged Spain and Brazil into sixth position following Euro 2016 triumph. The ranking's top five remains unchanged, with Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Germany and Chile – all of whom reached the latter stages of their respective tournaments this summer. Wales, following a good run at Euro 2016 climbed up 15 places and are now 11th on the rankings while Iceland have climbed to 22nd. See the part of ranking table below... |
How could I have said I will beat & impregnate Oluremi Tinubu at the same time- Dino Melaye Posted: 14 Jul 2016 09:19 AM PDT Dino Melaye who recently had a row with his colleague and wife of the National leader of APC, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, today addressed members of the National Assembly correspondents where he denied claims of saying he would beat her and also impregnate her. Dino said he couldn't have said he would impregnate Senator Oluremi Tinubu as she has arrived menopause. "It is malicious and a lie that I said I would impregnate Mrs Tinubu. Biologically, it is even impossible to impregnate Mrs Tinubu because she has arrived menopause. How can you say you want to beat somebody and at the same time impregnate the person. Unfortunately, Senator Oluremi Tinubu got up and was recognised to speak and immediately she started speaking, she specifically mentioned my name,. For reasons only known to Senator Remi Tinubu, she got up and the first thing she said was that she was being harassed in this chamber by Senator Melaye at this point. She went ahead to say that why would he come here and be threatening senators and there was a large chorus from senators. At that point I was still calm. She got up again and said that this thug must be tamed. At that point, I got up and told her that she was very stupid. The next statement from her was 'You are a dog'. She called me a dog, and when she called me a dog I stood up and reacted and I told her that this was not bourdillon and she should look at my face, I am not one of those senators who normally come to prostrate to them in bourdillon and I am from Kogi and not from Lagos. Somehow she got falsehood sold to SaharaReporters. Nobody among those of us who spoke there talked about impeachment. The issue of the presidency was not the subject matter but because of deliberate wickedness and satanic manifestation, they brought in the issue of presidency to garnish their aim and purpose."Photo credit: Sumner Shagari Sambo |

Posted: 14 Jul 2016 08:07 AM PDT Ten-year-old boy born without arms is determined to conquer the world with his "magical feet" and has refused to give in to his physical disabilities. Ha Van Tai, who lives in the small village of Kim Dau in Cam Lo District, Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, was born with neither of his arms, forcing him to rely on his flexible feet in order to perform daily tasks such as brushing teeth, writing, or turning pages in a book. Nguyen Thi Thuy, Tai's homeroom teacher at Le Van Tam Grade School, said Tai is one of her most impressive students and has inspired his classmates with his perseverance and resilience. "Despite having no arm and a fragile physique, Tai has a great passion for learning and hasn't skipped a single class. Tai's example is not only a motivation for his fellow students but also an inspiration to teachers." Nguyen said. Using a chair as his table during a class at school, Tai hunched close to his feet and scribbled down lesson notes as gracefully and fast as any other student, stopping once in a while to listen attentively to the teacher's words. Check out these heartwarming photos of the youngster captured and shared with Tuoi Tre newspaper by Vietnamese photographer Tra Theit. |
Posted: 14 Jul 2016 08:49 AM PDT The investigation by the House of Representatives joint committee on ethics and privileges and foreign affairs into the alleged sexual misconduct by three lawmakers, Samuel Ikon, Mohammed Gololo and Mark Gbillah, in the US in April this year, was today stalled as the immediate past US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle or any official from the US Embassy failed to honor the panel's invitation. Also absent at the public hearing was the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama who was also invited. He however had written earlier to the committee members informing them he was attending an African Union Summit in Kigali, Rwanda and that he would not be back until July 19th. The panel postponed the meeting till Wednesday July 20th. The panel had summoned the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, to appear before it so he can give concrete evidence to the alleged acts of sexual misconduct he accused the three lawmakers of committing while they were on an official assignment in Cleveland USA in April. |

Boko Haram: Maiduguri alone has 51,000 widows and 49,000 orphans in 17 IDP camps-Governor Shettima Posted: 14 Jul 2016 07:51 AM PDT Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima stated this on Wednesday when he received a high powered delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS in his office. The delegation which includes Michel Arrion, Ambassador, head of EU's delegation to Nigeria & ECOWAS, Brian O'Neill, Minister-Counsellor, head of Cooperation, EU delegation to Nigeria & ECOWAS and Fatima Kyari Mohammed, EU's Adviser held several vital discussions at length ranging from health, education, reconstruction, resettlement, agriculture, IDP camps, feeding and host of others. In Maiduguri alone, we have 51,000 widows and about 49,000 orphans in the 17 IDP camps and only God know the population of widows and orphans in Borno state as a result of this insurgency because just last week we received about 25,000 IDPs in Ngala who were rescued from some newly liberated areas " Shettima explained. "Ours is a basket case but our focus is that, in next twelve months, we want to be heralded as a success story; of very genuine turnaround. Our focus are in education; without education lets forget about everything, job creation, particularly in agricultural sector; to invest in the whole value chain of agricultural production process and lastly, investment in gender empowerment and girl-child education" Shettima stressed. "We bought some cows that can produce 18 litres of milk per day; our local breeds here produces one litre of milk per day. So, we bought some samples and we are buying more. We want to buy at least 500 of those cows. For communities that are returning, we would encourage them to form cooperatives, we will give those women some of these cows so that the milk in the cows would be use in our school feeding program" Shettima further explained.More photos... |

"Please remember my Black son" writes white man married to African American woman Posted: 14 Jul 2016 07:44 AM PDT Matt Stauffer, a white guy married to an African American woman wrote this post after Alton Sterling was shot dead by a Baton Rouge, Louisiana cop in a parking lot. "This is my family. The White guy is me. That's my beautiful wife next to me, and probably the most incredible child to ever live, Chi." Matt writes.Chi loves superheroes. Every day when I come home, without fail, he asks if we can play superheroes. He puts on a cape, or his Captain America jacket, and prepares swords and wings out of cardboard. Some days we're real superheroes–his favourites are Captain America and Iron Man–and some days he makes up superheroes based on things he's seen in Dora or Wild Kratts, superheroes like "Cheetah Man" and, my favourite, "Super Chi." Chi brings joy into every room he enters. He's creative, loving, and sensitive–more likely to give away a toy than to fight over it. There is so much good in that boy it brings me to tears just to consider it. Chi is going to be 13. Not today, or tomorrow, or next year. But soon enough, this boy will blossom–awkwardly but beautifully–into a young man. He's going to be tall. I'm 6'2″, and he'll likely be close to six foot. But his skin will be darker than mine, his hair curlier. He'll be raised knowing and loving his African-American heritage and family. What I'm saying is this: I'm a White guy from the suburbs, and my son will be a young Black man. Soon. And I'm scared to death. I'm scared to death that he'll be in a hoodie on his way home from a friend's house and a vigilante will shoot him. I'm scared to death he'll have a silly toy and an anonymous caller will bring the police down on him, and they will shoot him. I'm scared to death he'll get frustrated by cops pulling him over too often and he'll talk back to them once, and they will shoot him. I'm scared to death his tall, dark body will scare some neighbour and they'll "fear for their lives" and they'll shoot him. I'm scared to death that, once someone shoots him, the media and the shooters will start pulling together a story that paints him as a criminal who deserves death. And here's the most important thing: I'm not alone. I haven't talked to a single Black parent ever who doesn't have these concerns for their kids. And their families. And their friends. If you've never heard about "The Talk" that parents have to give their Black kids, you might assume it's the classic "The Birds and the Bees" talk. It's not. It's the "How to Avoid Being Shot By the Cops" talk. "Don't talk back." "Keep your hands where they can see them." "Don't make any sudden moves." This is necessary because we fear for our children's lives. Regularly. Actively. Painfully. Every new publicized instance of violence against Black bodies brings us new fear. "It feels like the world is trying to get rid of us," my wife told me last night as we lamented another hash-tagged Black body. "It's like our only options are either assimilation or extinction. They're killing us and they're killing our culture." When I was in middle school, I sagged my pants. When I was in high school, I dyed my hair and wore ripped clothing and wallet chains. I was a teenager! I was finding myself. And at no point did I or my parents worry for my safety as a result. Chi will likely not be allowed to wear ripped clothing. He will not be allowed to sag his pants. He will not dye his hair. We will carefully guide what he wears and how he presents himself. Why? Because we want to protect him. We don't want cops or neighbours to look at him and decide he's a threat, and then shoot him. A few of my Black friends shared on Twitter today about the precautions they take to try to avoid a bad police encounter.... Read he rest of his post here: |
