President Obama reacts to the killing of two Black Americans by white police officers Posted: 07 Jul 2016 02:01 PM PDT US President Obama says all Americans should be deeply troubled by the recent killings of two Black Americans by white police officers. He reacted via a post which he shared on his Facebook wall this evening. He wrote: All Americans should be deeply troubled by the fatal shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. We've seen such tragedies far too many times, and our hearts go out to the families and communities who've suffered such a painful loss. Although I am constrained in commenting on the particular facts of these cases, I am encouraged that the U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation in Baton Rouge, and I have full confidence in their professionalism and their ability to conduct a thoughtful, thorough, and fair inquiry. But regardless of the outcome of such investigations, what's clear is that these fatal shootings are not isolated incidents. They are symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve. To admit we've got a serious problem in no way contradicts our respect and appreciation for the vast majority of police officers who put their lives on the line to protect us every single day. It is to say that, as a nation, we can and must do better to institute the best practices that reduce the appearance or reality of racial bias in law enforcement. That's why, two years ago, I set up a Task Force on 21st Century Policing that convened police officers, community leaders, and activists. Together, they came up with detailed recommendations on how to improve community policing. So even as officials continue to look into this week's tragic shootings, we also need communities to address the underlying fissures that lead to these incidents, and to implement those ideas that can make a difference. That's how we'll keep our communities safe. And that's how we can start restoring confidence that all people in this great nation are equal before the law. In the meantime, all Americans should recognize the anger, frustration, and grief that so many Americans are feeling -- feelings that are being expressed in peaceful protests and vigils. Michelle and I share those feelings. Rather than fall into a predictable pattern of division and political posturing, let's reflect on what we can do better. Let's come together as a nation, and keep faith with one another, in order to ensure a future where all of our children know that their lives matter. |

PDP caretaker committee calls for the arrest of Ali Modu Sheriff Posted: 07 Jul 2016 07:38 AM PDT The Ahmed Makarfi led caretaker committee of PDP has called on the Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, to immediately arrest the former Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff. A statement signed by the committee's spokesperson, Dayo Adeyeye, says the party is shocked at the flagrant disobedience of court orders sacking him from office. The statement in part reads "We are shocked at the attitude of the former national chairman of our great party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff who has become an authority in the country with flagrant disobedience of the Nigerian constitution, the Electoral Act and the PDP constitution without being arrested or detained by security agencies. Is he above the law? If we may ask". Justice Abdullah Mohammed Liman's judgment on Monday was superior to all other court rulings, ex-parte orders or interlocutory injunctions procured by Senator Sheriff and his co-travellers, adding that his reliance on Justice Okon Abang's ruling of June 30 was an attempt to confuse unsuspecting members of the public as he had done in previous times. You will recall that Senator Sheriff in collaboration with some APC governors and members invaded our party secretariat on Monday June 13, 2016 laying claims to a non-existing court order; and he has started again after a competent court issued a judgment upholding the decision of our national convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers state which constituted the PDP national caretaker committee to pilot the affairs of the party for 90 days, and to conduct another convention that will elect new officers of the party. Following this, we are calling on the police to do the needful by arresting Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, his co-travellers and Hon Matthew Iduoriyekemwen for disobeying court judgment". |

Brymo says "black men like to suffer", fans respond & slam him Posted: 07 Jul 2016 06:09 AM PDT "Black man suffers at home, black man suffers abroad. Black man suffers everywhere, black man likes to suffer." - Music artiste Brymo is being criticized for this quote he shared via twitter. Twitter users are describing the quote and its timing as illogical, especially since he tweeted it in the aftermath of the loss of lives of innocent black men in the US, in attacks carried out by Police Officers believed to be racist. According to Brymo, black people need to sit up. Music by black artistes should stop being about swag and champagne and hoes. "Blacks need to make it a point to preach value in all that we do, not everyday money money money. Black people feel helpless but we are not.. We are lazy and illogical!! On the grounds that we don't solve our problems, we just play blame games... It's in our homes and work place." Nigerians are however not pleased with his unpopular opinions and are dragging him on Social Media. See more tweets as you continue. |
