Is this dress too short for a wedding?

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 03:11 AM PDT

The friend of a wedding guest took to Facebook to detail her pal's agony at a wedding and all over a dress.. (the one pictured above) She wrote:
"She says she got treated rudely by other women at the wedding who saw her as a target for wearing this dress. A woman came up behind her and slapped her on the bum and said it was on a dare from a group of other women who were watching and snickering.
"Someone else seemingly purposely spilt a beer on her. "She's amazed that grown women could be so immature and such bullies. "But wait. She wants to know - did she bring ANY of this on herself by wearing this dress to a wedding?"

Some commenters think she stole the couple's shine while others think the dress would have been appropriate anywhere else but not a wedding. Thoughts?

Photos: SA-based Nigerian evangelist hid 165kgs of drugs worth N1.4bn in containers of foodstuffs

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 03:06 AM PDT

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) are interrogating a South Africa-based cleric in connection with over 165kgs of narcotics drugs seized at the Apapa Seaport, Lagos, The Nation reports.

The illicit consignment were traced to John Vincent Arinze, from Ara village, Nise in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The 52-year-old suspect was arrested in his hotel room in Lagos. A Mercedes Benz Jeep belonging to him was also impounded.

The suspect, who had lived in South Africa for over a decade accepted ownership of the illicit shipment and said he made a big mistake by taking over the business of his late wife.

"I am an evangelist living in Durban, South Africa. My late wife was into drug trafficking before she died few years ago. I made a mistake venturing into her business. It is all my fault," he stated.

The drugs, 92kgs of methamphetamine and 73kgs of ephedrine with the estimated street value of N.4 billion were found inside two containers of foodstuff meant for export to South Africa, following meticulous undercover operation by operatives of NDLEA.

The narcotics drugs were hidden inside packs of melon concealed in foodstuff and cosmetics such as gari, noodles, Knorr and Maggi food seasoning, yam powder, malt drinks, pepper, milk, herbal hair cream and Golden Morn cereals, Damatol hair cream, bags of melon, kegs of palm oil, beans, biscuits, sardine and cartons of Orijin Bitters. During the examination of the containers marked MSKU 388274-1 and MSKU 424717-0, anti-narcotic officials detected 20kg of Methamphetamine and 50kg of Ephedrine inside the first container and 72Kg of Methamphetamine and 23Kg of Ephedrine in the second container.

Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd), said the seizure will have a positive influence in Nigeria's fight against narcotics drug.

"This is a product of careful planning and meticulous tracking of narcotic drugs movement. The consignments were closely monitored by our undercover agents and intercepted at the Apapa Seaport, Lagos, following the detection of narcotics by NDLEA sniffer dogs during screening operation. This will definitely have a positive influence on Nigeria's drug control efforts" said the NDLEA boss

Col. Abdallah reiterated the agency's commitment to the fight against drug trafficking and prosecution of offenders.

"I am very happy with the success recorded in this operation. The agency will remain painstaking and professional in the fight against illicit drug production, trafficking and abuse. We hope to unmask the drug syndicate behind this shipment and make more arrests soon," he added

The suspect will be charged to court soon.

Forbes - Meet the 35-year-old entrepreneur who owns Nigeria's 2nd largest rice farm

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 02:20 AM PDT

Forbes writer Nsehe Mfonobong interviewed former journalist turned entrepreneur Rotimi Williams who owns the second largest rice farm in Nigeria. Read the feature below...
Nigerians consume more than 5 million metric tons of rice every year, with a significant portion of its consumption needs sourced from imports. Rotimi Williams WMB -4.95%, an ambitious 35 year-old Nigerian entrepreneur and rice farmer, is on a quest to change that.
Williams, a former Journalist, is the owner of Kereksuk Rice Farm, the 2nd largest commercial rice farm in Nigeria by land size. His farm, which is situated in Nasarawa state in northern Nigeria, currently sits on 45,000 hectares and employs more than 600 indigenes of Nasarawa.
I recently caught up with the budding entrepreneur in Lagos, and had a brief chat with him where he recounted his journey and mused on how Nigeria can attain self-sufficiency in rice production in the near future.

What's your educational and professional background?
I attended King's College in Lagos. After attending secondary school at King's College I proceeded to obtain my first degree at University of Aberdeen where I graduated with a degree in Economics. I also obtained a Master's Degree in Economics from the same institution. My quest for more knowledge led me to enroll for yet another Master's Degree at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London where I gained an MSc. in Finance and Development Studies.
Upon graduation, I landed a role as an analyst at the European Economics and Financial Centre in London. Afterwards, Euromoney Magazine- employed me where I covered the African space.
I would say that this is where my journey truly started.

Given your background as a journalist, what informed your decision to venture into rice farming?
While at Euromoney, I had the opportunity to travel around a few African countries. These trips exposed me to countries like Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia and Ghana. A common thread amongst the aforementioned nations is agriculture. Agriculture is at the very core of these countries and this got me thinking. After a few more trips, I decided to move back to Nigeria and sink my teeth into the agricultural space. Nigeria remains the largest economy in Africa from both a GDP perspective and also the strength of the size of our population.
Upon my arrival back in Nigeria, I got a job at a premier Bank where I was promised to sit on the agriculture desk – my hope was that I would gain enough knowledge of the Nigerian agricultural industry and develop myself from there.

Unfortunately, the agricultural desk at the Bank never quite achieved its set goals. I pushed hard for the Bank to adopt policies and gain inroads into the agricultural industry but my attempts were somewhat frustrated. I sincerely feel that the bank wasn't quite ready to launch fully into the agricultural space.
As my frustration grew, I decided to quit banking and planned to go it alone into agriculture. Frankly, my decision led to a challenging sojourn as attempts to raise funding with my partner proved difficult. We started a Structured Trade and Commodity Finance company. After a while I started consulting for small agriculture companies seeking to raise capital both locally and internationally.

You currently own the second (2nd) largest rice farm in Nigeria with 45,000 hectares in Nasarawa, Nigeria. What's the story behind your acquisition of such vast land, and what are some of the challenges you've encountered in farming in the volatile northern region?
Two years had past and we still had no funds, so I made an offer to the farm owner, that with a 50-50 split, I would develop the farm with both personal funds and external funding. He agreed and that's how I became part owner of 17,296 hectares of farmland. Knowing that agriculture would become the integral area of focus in Nigeria, I was bullish and ramped up the land to 55,000 hectares. I later parted with my partner as a result of unaligned views and strategy. I maintained 45,000 hectares for myself and today we have started producing, with our quality paddy being sold to major milling companies in Nigeria. However, I must add the following, I often have people ask how I learned abut farming, as everyone thinks you need a special degree in agriculture to be a farmer, but I always tell them the truth, I learnt it all on Google GOOGL +1.11%.   I downloaded every article I could find on rice production, consumed it and then practiced it in the fields.

Frankly, my experience working alongside indigenes of Nasarawa state has been exceptional. I have learnt over the years that if you approach people with respect even more so while one seeks to set up a business venture. Having a healthy sense of community makes all the difference in attaining one's set objectives. I lean heavily on the wisdom and cultural approach of the indigenes to carry out farming on such a scale here in Nasarawa.

Tarila, daughter of suspected mastermind of 2010 Independence day bombing, Charles Okah, writes open letter to Pres. Buhari

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 02:04 AM PDT

Tarila Okah, the daughter of the suspected mastermind of the 2010 Independence Day bombing, Charles Okah, has written an open letter to President Buhari. In the letter, Tarila accused the judiciary of ‎frustrating her father's trial as the presiding judge or the prosecuting counsels are always absent whenever he is to appear in court. Tarila, who says she will be getting married in the next few weeks, expressed sadness that her Dad will not be there to walk her down the aisle and share in her joy. She prevailed on President Buhari to look into her father's case. Full text of her letter after the cut...

Your Excellency,
His Excellency,
President Muhammadu Buhari
President, Commander-in-Chief
Federal Republic of Nigeria
Dear President Buhari,
I hope this letter reaches you in good health. My name is Tarila Okah, daughter of Mr. Charles Okah, who is currently remanded at Kuje Prison and standing trial before Hon. Justice Gabriel Kolawole at the Federal High Court in Abuja over the 2010 Independence Day bomb incident.
Mr. President, I am writing this letter principally to draw your attention, the entire people of Nigeria, and members of the international community to what I perceive as injustice being wilfully and maliciously meted to my father by the Nigerian state. Within the last 10 months, disturbing media reports about his attempt to commit suicide at the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 6, 2015 and his failing health are sad reminders of the harsh reality of my father's frustration with the judicial system in Nigeria, which is notorious for elastic trials that can drag on for years on end and wear out all parties. It is rather unfortunate that several court dates in the course of my father's trial have been cancelled either because the presiding Trial Judge had a conference to attend or for other reasons that brings disrepute to the Nigerian justice system. For instance, the Prosecutor Dr. Alex Izinyon, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria failed to attend one of the trials on a date that had been agreed upon beforehand, instead choosing to attend his child's graduation ceremony abroad.
With all due respect, Mr. President, no democratic Government anywhere in the world, including Canada where I currently reside, would treat a prisoner's attempt at suicide as well as the prisoner's failing health, with disdain. Such a peculiar prisoner's case ought to be concluded speedily by the Judiciary. Alternatively, such a Prisoner of Conscience as my father, should be granted bail. However, from all indications, the Nigerian Government is clearly insensitive to his plight.
Your Excellency, I have consulted with several Nigerian lawyers who have sufficiently educated me that, pursuant to Section 162 of the new Criminal Justice Administration Law in the country, my father is entitled to bail; having spent more than 3 years in prison custody. Nevertheless, Hon. Justice Gabriel Kolawole has on two previous occasions overruled my father's applications for bail. However, the pace of the trial has still not been picked up.  Meanwhile, Justice Kolawole in 2011 easily granted bail to Senator Ali Ndume who was standing trial for terrorism as an alleged sponsor of Boko Haram. Today, after being re-elected on the platform of your party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ndume is the Majority Leader of Nigeria's upper legislative chamber, the Senate, while my father (who is equally as important to society) is still languishing in prison as an inmate awaiting trial; almost 6 years after he was first arrested on October 16, 2010 on suspicion of being "JOMO GBOMO," the spokesman for the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). Interestingly, Nigerian media perception about my father's culpability in the Independence Day bomb incident keeps changing. At first, he was accused of being the spokesperson of MEND. Later, he was described as an accomplice to the alleged crime; after the media and the Nigerian Government realised that 'Jomo Gbomo' was still releasing statements on behalf of MEND, even as my father was firmly held in custody! Now he is accused of being the mastermind.
Thus far, the prosecution has relied heavily on 'witnesses', all of whom have contradicted their statements under cross examination. In a recent court sitting, a witness from the Department of State Security (DSS) who introduced himself as a 'Crime Scene Investigator' admitted that, "no evidence was collected at the crime scene". While another witness who supposedly 'sold' a Mazda car to the 2nd Defendant, admitted under cross-examination that, the very first time he set his eyes on the said Mazda car (Exhibit 2) was "at the premises of the DSS Abuja Headquarters."
Without prejudice to his ongoing trial before Hon. Justice Gabriel Kolawole, I honestly believe that my father is innocent of the crimes alleged against him. Over the 6 year period of his incarceration and trial, his businesses which employed many Nigerians have collapsed; his family is in disarray. Years apart, especially under such circumstances, often dissolves the emotional bonds between a husband and his wife, and for my much younger siblings who have now spent more time without their father, there are virtually no emotional bonds to be dissolved.
On a more personal note, I will be getting married in a few weeks; albeit without the privilege of having my beloved father walk me down the aisle – the dream of every daughter. I feel an admixture of joy and pain as this day approaches knowing that my father is alive but held somewhere unjustly. Clearly, my siblings and I are being punished vicariously by the Nigerian state over crimes allegedly committed by our father which have not been proven beyond reasonable doubt by a court of competent jurisdiction. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, the mere act of filing even trumped-up charges carries along with it a strong presumption of guilt, which has led to my father's conviction in the court of public opinion and has also led to the abuse of his fundamental human rights. I know that some Nigerians, on reading this open letter, will attack me for daring to appeal for my father's freedom. But my message to those compatriots is simple: it is high time we focused on finding the real perpetrators.
Finally, Mr. President, in your determined quest to fight corruption in Nigeria, I believe that the concept of corruption should be expanded beyond financial crimes. We must also fight corruption in the system, and in this case, the judicial system. We have witnessed the speedy handling of cases involving high profile politicians, but a very sluggish process for others. The joy of my upcoming marriage plus the pain of a missing father (who is alive) equates to the simple plea: #PLEASEFREECHARLESOKAH!

"I decided to do it in retaliation to insults from his mother" Housewife who cut off her stepson genitals confesses

Posted: 02 Jul 2016 01:55 AM PDT

Few weeks after 21-month-old boy Musa was severely mutilated by his stepmother in Kano, Bara'atu Muhammad did same to another toddler. She cut off the genitals of her stepson, 23-day old Buhari Muhammad in Dafe village, a Gbagyi community in Shiroro local government area of Niger State.

The 17-year-old housewife is the second wife of Muhammadu Dauda whom he married four months ago. He had been married to the Buhari's mother for 7 years and he is the first child of the union.
According to Daily Trust, Bara'atu confessed that she took the baby from his mother's room where he was sleeping, to the toilet where she chopped-off his penis with a kitchen knife.

"I decided to do that in retaliation to insults (I've been receiving) from his mother. She has been insulting me. Anytime I complained to our husband, he will not take action. That was the major reason I used our kitchen knife to cut off his penis."

Muhammad Dauda denied the allegation, adding that Bara'atu never reported Basira to him and that as far as he was concerned they were living in peace.

"I never heard them quarrelling, I never saw them fighting. My house is intact. There was no division. I treated them equally," Dauda insisted, adding that he was shocked when he heard what Bara'atu did to his son. "She never showed any sign of madness. She is mentally okay."

The baby's mother, Basira, 21, also denied Bara'atu's allegations. "Ever since she was married and came to the house, I took her as my younger sister. That was why I allowed her to be close to my son. I didn't know that she was planning to kill my son," she lamented.

Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi who is in charge of the boy at the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna, said his penis has already been damaged and shrunken and that there was no way that it can be transplanted to its normal position.

The Niger State government promised to take care of Buhari's medical bills. The Director of Niger State Child's Right Agency, Maryam Kolo, said that the state government will ensure Buhari gets the required medical treatment.

Meanwhile, Niger State police spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana, said Bara'atu has been arraigned before a magistrate's court and remanded in Minna prison, pending the conclusion of investigations.
