Nigeria makes headway in securing China's funding of projects

Posted: 31 Jul 2016 12:30 PM PDT

Press statement from the Presidency
Budget and National Planning Minister, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, at the weekend, in Beijing, made a strong case why the Chinese government should assist Nigeria financially in funding critical major infrastructure projects in the country. Senator Udoma who was in China for the Coordinator's meeting on the implementation of the follow-up actions of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) also used the opportunity to discuss issues of vital economic interest with that country's Vice Minister for Commerce, Mr. Qian Keming; and officials of China EXIM bank, where he stressed the mutually beneficial relationship the two countries will eventually enjoy if Nigeria's economy is assisted to grow rapidly.

At the Johannesburg Summit in South Africa in December 2015, China had agreed to Assist African countries in ten strategic areas that will help their economy. It pledged $60 billion in aid, grants and concessional loans.

Nigeria is trying to get as much of the Chinese funding for projects in the form of grants, aids, investments and loans. The loan component will however be within the country's debt sustainability limits. Projects proposed for the facility by Nigeria is in the region of about $20 billion, and the Minister said Nigeria will be in a better stead if the Chinese government will assist with a substantial part of the funds required.

During the various meetings, Senator Udoma stressed the need for special consideration for Nigeria given its strategic relationship with China, its economic potentials, and its capacity to redeem its part of the transaction obligations.

The Minister said following the meetings, both countries expressed satisfaction with the proposals and are very anxious to take proceedings to the next level.
During the Cooperation meeting attended by ministers from various countries in Africa, China's President Xi Jinping said the meeting was an important step taken by China and Africa to implement the consensus of Chinese and Africa leaders and the outcomes of the FOCAC.
"It is a significant measure to boost China-African cooperative development. The meeting demonstrates to the world once again that no matter how the international landscape may change, the resolve of China and Africa to pursue unity and win-win cooperation will never change", Jinping said.

The President noted that the weak performance of the world economy brings both opportunities and challenges to the economic development of China and Africa. "We must stand shoulder to shoulder and march forward hand in hand," he admonished.

In his keynote speech, China's State Councilor, Yang Jiech, explained that his country initiated the meeting at this time "to take stock of the delivery of summit outcomes, to align our thinking, built consensus, overcome challenges and difficulties, share experience and promote cooperation, so that we can pool the wisdom and strength of both sides and give a leg up to the implementation work".

At the plenary session, China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, was pleased that both China and the African countries have attained a high level of implementation of the outcomes of the summit, have acted promptly to take forward the five pillars and ten plans of cooperation and have made substantial progress in enhancing friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation across board.

He added that China has delivered on its commitments and made every effort to advance follow-up actions.

Photo: 24 hours after employment, driver absconds with company vehicle

Posted: 31 Jul 2016 12:25 PM PDT

30-year-old man, Jimoh Taoreed, pictured above has been arrested after he disappeared with a van used to distribute sachet water produced by his employer, the Anglican Diocese, at Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State, barely 24 hours after he was employed.
Parading Jimoh before newsmen at the state police command, the state police commissioner, Leye Oyebade said Jimoh applied for the job with the intention to steal.

When he applied for the job, he gave his name as Saheed Popoola and said that he was an indigene of Eruwa town in Ibarapa area of the state. However after his arrest, it was discovered that his real name was Jimoh Taoreed and he hailed from Irawo Owode in Atisbo Local Government Area.

Taoreed and his assistant, a motor boy, on the day he absconded with his company bus, had gone to distribute bags of sachet water to buyers on June 30th but after carrying out the task, he deceived his assistant by telling him that he wanted to withdraw money from a bank in another location at same Bodija area. After he parked the vehicle, the unsuspecting conductor also alighted to transact business in another bank, but before his return, Taoreed drove the vehicle to an unknown place and was not seen again until his arrest, Oyebade stated further. Jimoh was arrest and the vehicle was recovered at Irawo Owode.

On recovery of the vehicle,Jimoh had removed the inscription that was originally on it and replaced it with Oga Nla  which means Big Boss.

When interrogated, Jimoh said
"About three weeks ago, while distributing bags of water to customers, a spirit pushed me to drive the vehicle away. The thought was countered by another spirit which told me not to do it. But at the end, I obeyed the first one that urged me to steal the vehicle. I left the person who was distributing the water bags and drove the van to my village. I went to pay for a bold sticker reading 'Oga Nla' (Big boss) and posted it on the van. Unfortunately for me, I was traced to my village and arrested. I was suspected by my family members that I stole the vehicle. I believe they were the ones who informed the police. I admit that my act is of the devil and I promise not to do so again."

How Timothy Iro was killed by a police officer in Kano, Igbo Traders Association demands for justice

Posted: 31 Jul 2016 11:44 AM PDT

The Igbo Traders Association, ITA, in Kano state has demanded for justice over the gruesome murder of Tochukwu  Iro by police officers in Sabon Gari, Kano State on Wednesday, July 27.

Tochukwu Iro, a patent medicine dealer was shot by trigger-happy police officers attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Kano state Police Command.

According to eyewitness accounts, the 40-year-old married father of two children from from Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State was allegedly killed at about 12 noon Wednesday along France Road, opposite First Baptist Church in Sabon Gari area of the state.

One of the eyewitnesses who spoke to International Centre For Investigative Reporting(ICIR)
"On Wednesday afternoon, at about 12 noon, we saw Tochukwu walking along the road, as he tried to negotiate Illaro Road, two armed police men walked up to him. They came with tinted glass car. They stopped the car close to First Baptist Church, crossed the road and ordered Tochukwu to stop. When he stopped, there was a mild argument between him and the two armed men; and one of them who was wearing Kaftan brought out a branded police rifle and shot him. When traders around started shouting, the same man shot into the air and bundled the victim into a waiting tricycle, while his partner crossed the road, dashed into the car and zoomed off."
Speaking during an emergency Press Conference organized by the Igbo Traders Association at the Abubakar  Rimi Market, chairman of the traders, Chief Emmanuel Amadi disclosed that Iro died at Murtala Muhammad Specialist hospital Thursday afternoon after a failed operation.
"On that Wednesday, I was attending a market Board meeting  with General Manager of Abubakar Rimi Market, security chiefs and other stakeholders when I received a call that one of our members was shot by the police along France Road. I immediately told the market management and they asked me to get more details over the incident. We made arrangements to ensure that he was taken to hospital for treatment.
"Around 9 p.m. on that Wednesday, I put a call across to Murtala Muhammad Hospital and I was told that he was responding to treatment. On Thursday morning, I called the hospital and was told that he was taken to the theatre for operation; but it was so sad that this afternoon (Thursday), we got the news that he could not survive the gun shot. As I am speaking to you now, Tochukwu is dead.
"I have his file here and I can attest to the fact that he was a peace-loving man. We have never known him as a criminal and that is why we wondered why such an innocent man could be killed in such a gruesome manner. Since the news of his death, we have not rested.
"The youths were here in our office this afternoon in protest over the killing of their brother. They are demanding for justice. On our own, we have pleaded with them not to take laws into their hands; and all we are saying is that the killers of Tochukwu must be made face justice"  he stated.
The Kano Police Command Public Relations Officer,  DSP Magaji Musa Majia, who confirmed the incident claimed that the deceased was shot because he refused to stop. A statement issued by the command below:
"The Kano State Police Command wishes to inform the public that on  27th July, 2016 at about 1200hrs a team of operatives attached to Special Anti-Robbery
Squad (SARS) based on tip off along France Road,  stopped one Ogochukwu Augustine `m' of Odutola Street S/gari but he refused to stop. He was subsequently pursued and while trying to escape, he was shot at the hipbone and immediately rushed to Murtala Specialist Hospital where he gave up the ghost while receiving treatment. The Commissioner of Police Kano State Alhaji Rabiu Yusuf  has directed for immediate arrest and detention of the team leader and his men for interrogation at the State CIID Kano. He also summoned the Elders of Igbo Community in Kano where he sympathizes with them and assured that Justice will be done. The Commissioner of Police also stated that his primary assignment is to protect life and property and will not condone any Police personnel who risk the life of innocent citizens. The outcome of the investigation will be made public as soon as investigation is completed before further action taken"

Photos: Traffic policewoman spotted working under the rain in Ibadan

Posted: 31 Jul 2016 11:20 AM PDT

Daniel Odofin, who is based in Ibadan shared these photos of a female officer of the Nigeria Police Force identified as Maryam, controlling traffic under the rain.
"We are quick to point it out when our police do something wrong," Odofin wrote. Today I saw a police woman in the rain, drenched and still doing her duty. Actively doing her job, despite the rain. Not running for shelter even though no one would blame her if she did. This is the kind of person that lifts the image of the Nigerian Police Force.
Her name is Maryam, I didn't get her last name properly or her rank. Her devotion to duty made the difference in a place synonymous with traffic gridlock on a day that isn't comfortable. She doesn't have the kind of salary or allowance that our public officials boast of but she gives meaning to the title "Civil Servant". Help us make Maryam Opep famous, help us show others what devotion to duty is."

Drug lab uncovered in senior citizens' home in South Africa, three Nigerians arrested

Posted: 31 Jul 2016 09:59 AM PDT

Members of the Hawks Drug Enforcement Bureau on Tuesday, July 26, raided a historic building in Durban's South Beach and uncovered a drug laboratory. The 90-year-old Pioneer Lodge, once a popular hotel is home to mostly senior citizens
Three suspects Chimezie Godwin Agwanihu, 35, Victory Uzoamaka Nnadi, 31, and Ifani Henry Nnadi, 26 were arrested at the scene. They have been charged with drug possession.
"They were also found in possession of a machine used to manufacture the drugs, 2kg of white powder and 750g of embalming powder suspected to be the ingredients of manufacturing drugs," said Hawks spokesman Simphiwe Mhlongo.
Police also found 4000 tablets with a Mercedes emblem suspected to be ecstasy. "The equipment and ingredients were seized. The street value of the drugs seized is about R250 000. All confiscated items will be sent to the forensic laboratory to determine the type of drug."
It is believed the drug manufactured is methamphetamine commonly known as meth, crystal, chalk, or ice. It is an extremely addictive stimulant in the form of a white, odourless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder.
It was also disclosed that drug dealers and manufacturers were tenants of flats in the area, and were using three or four of them for their business. The elderly residents said they were disappointed at how their "happy home" had become a nightmare to live in and said there was no vetting process for newcomers.
"Lately, there was a funny smell in the building. I wasn't quite sure what it was but it did smell like strong chemical. We are old people and we just want to live peacefully here. We don't know how such people are being let into the building without being vetted properly," said 60-year-old Pinky Karstn, who has been living there for 14 years.
She said she would often see people entering the building multiple times a day, and suspected they might be drug runners.
"Our suspicions were confirmed when the police raided them this week. We fear for our lives in such an environment. The building is meant for elderly people not for criminals," said 75-year-old Patrick Simon, who has been resident for 18 years.
The arrested Nigerian suspects appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Wednesday and were remanded in custody until August 11.

Photos: RRS nabs 15 burglary suspects, recovers computers

Posted: 31 Jul 2016 09:53 AM PDT

The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos Police Command have arrested 15 suspects over the stealing of 7 sets of computer and its accessories at a Shomolu based public school just as they recovered 4 mini-laptops, a Laser Jet scanner, a desktop and a printer belonging to the school.
The suspects were arrested on Wednesday morning when RRS Intelligence Team stumbled on a lead that one of the suspects was lurking in a gaming shop at 29, Awoseni Streets, Shomolu.
On interrogation, the suspect, who turned out to be a buyer of one of the stolen mini-laptops specifically designed for secondary school pupils, led to the arrest of the principal suspect and 13 others.
The lead suspect, Yinka Adesola, 19, an athlete, disclosed that one Julius Akinyele, 20 (still at large), a phone repairer, who he accommodated, brought seven mini laptops, 1 scanner, 1 desktop, a CPU and a LaserJet printer belonging to a popular public school for keep in his apartment. Explaining how he got the computers, he stated:
"I knew he was a wayward guy. I accommodated him because his relatives whom he was staying with were relocating from Shomolu. I offered to assist him since I had an apartment to myself.... He was my junior in secondary school. He was one of my fans while I was competing for the school and Local Governments in the state.... Immediately he joined me, a lot of things started missing in the compound. Neighbours were losing their phones. Later, we discovered that he was the one stealing all the phones. My parents directed me that I tell him to move out and I did."
Adesola also stated that, before this time, he had brought 7 mini-computers, 1 scanner, 1 desktop, a Laser Jet printer for keep in my room. Although, I saw the name of the school on those items, since he was always visiting that school, I didn't know they were stolen items.... After a long while I didn't see him, I attempted to sell all these items. Some I have sold, and others like desktop, printer and four mini-laptops, I have not sold. I gave them out to friends and people that I know can help me sell them.
Arrested along with the suspect were Lukman Sokoya, 34; Wasiu Adejare, 30; Ismaila Adebowale, 42; Ahmed Olaleye, 17 and Ramon Mukaila.
According to investigators, only six out of the 15 suspects arrested were directly connected to the burgled school and stolen computers as well as its accessories. Four of the suspects were released to their relatives, while the remaining five suspects were held for their link to cult activities in Shomolu.
The suspects, Kazeem Adenuga, 24; Owolabi Yusuph, 35; Wasiu Shodipe, 27; Samson Kareem, 34 and Sheriff Badru, 22, were arrested when investigators discovered that  they were involved in ceaseless violence in Awoseni Street on Tuesday night. The eleven suspects have all been transferred to SCID for further investigations.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, stated that the Command was leaving no stone unturn towards reducing crime in the state and make it safe for investment.
